This sort of thing makes me wonder -- metal atoms don't have specific covalent bonds to specific other metal atoms or anything. It's just that metal atoms in close proximity share the same cloud of valence electrons. So if you have metals that fit together really tightly, and they have extremely smooth, clean surfaces with no oxidation or contaminants or anything, why don't they just end up as one piece of metal?

I guess it's that even the smoothest metals are too rough? There are still hundreds of nanometer bumps and divots that prevent merging? Or does it have to do with the fact that the junction of the metals would also be a bunch of grain boundaries, and while grain boundaries themselves don't prevent a bunch of grains being one piece of metal, all grain boundaries being lined up in a plane does?
