How to Muck the Nuck

I wanna talk about how the final battle against the Nuckelavee went. This monster has been terrorizing Anima for a decade, maybe longer, and when it first shows up it is clearly a force to be reckoned with. But once Team RNJR (Mostly Ren) get their heads in order they take it down semi-easily. This might seem like a bit of an anticlimax, but consider this.

In Mountain Glenn, Dr. Oobleck states that older Grimm are more dangerous because they've developed the ability to recognize threats and pick up on patterns, using the line of elephantine Goliaths as an example. The Goliaths don't attack Vale because they that if they do, the Huntsmen defending the kingdom will wipe them out. They only attack when the surge of pent-up negativity is release, drawing in so many lesser Grimm to help overwhelm the kingdom's defenses.

Now, let's look at the Nuck's attack patterns (Spelling out the name every time is a pain, so I'm abbreviating it)

The first time the Nuck''s presence is felt, it's in the aftermath of Shion Village's destruction. Said destruction was also caused by the raid of the Branwen Tribe, so it's most likely the Nuck taking advantage of the bandits distracting the village's defenders to launch its own attack.

In Ren's flashback, the Nuck attacks his village, a place where hiring a Huntsman was seen as the final desperate move, not the first instinct. Ergo, it was a place that was outside the regular sphere of protection from the kingdoms.

In the present storyline, the Nuck attacks Team RNJR because, from a purely superficial view, they are no threat. Teenaged, runaway students, and Qrow is slowly dying from poison. So it attacks without fear.

But while Team RNJR may not have the strength advantage, they make up for it by fighting smarter. Ren's Semblance allows people to become invisible from a Grimm's negative-radar, giving them the opening to take it by surprise. And then they pin down the Nuck's arms, taking away its maneuverability. This allows Ren to finish the beast off.

So, yeah. I like it when characters win by acting clever.

this isn't super serious, but the most unrealistic thing in rwby (to me) is the apparent lack of any preparation for grimm invasion within the kingdoms or... anywhere, really.

where are the bunkers / shelters everyone knows to head to, specifically made for this scenario? where are the monthly tests of alarm systems? the stockpiles of food and medicine? you're living in a place surrounded by monsters who want to kill you and subway tunnels are the best you can do?? do you even want to survive??? /j

like yeah weaving that all in naturally might be difficult, but it's like. it feels like it should be a norm to the characters living in that setting? like someone just randomly mentioning their grimm-proof basement with everything needed to survive for x amount of time bc that's completely normal in the world—especially for those living far away from a city or a town—where you have no idea when, let alone if, the help is going to come.

plus it could make an interesting plot point if all the kingdoms did have these systems in place, but one / some of them got so comfortable with their current situation, believing the grimm could never breach their walls etc, that all of it was eventually de-funded and thus not kept up to date, which then would prove to be a costly mistake on a later date.

Forever Young

As I think about the Beacon saga of RWBY, I consider the thematic relationship between Ruby Rose and Roman Torchwick, her first arch-nemesis. And after much consideration, I realize that what makes Torchwick Ruby's foil is that is the direction of their maturity.

If Ruby's story is that she has been forced to grow up too fast- Pushed into Huntress college 2 years early, granted a full license later on- Torchwick's character is that he refuses to be an adult.

He's mocking and bullying. Makes faces at Em and Merc behind Cinder's back, When causing the Fall of Beacon, he fools around with the hijacked battleship like Deedee in Dexter's Laboratory. ("What does this button do? ...Oh, fun!"). If anything, Roman is the introduction to one of RWBY's less talked about themes, and that a majority of the so-called 'adult authority figures' are no-more mature than the youth they look after/look down on.

having thought about ozma's task these past few days has made me realize how much of a non-issue it is in the show itself.

like, in V5 he tells the group that he was cursed by the gods for failing to stop salem once. this was proven false in the lost fable, but no one was mad at him for leading them astray and towards a judgment day that might spell the end of their world.

none of them have even showed any concern over the possibility that the gods would return to remnant and stay, let alone being against it.

the focus has solely been on stopping salem and how to do it when she can't be destroyed or beaten, and i feel like at some point it's like... it's cutting it really close to do a switch around and make the brother gods be the real problem that must be dealt with, especially when V9 did give them and their past focus, and all that amounted to was information to understand them better, not that either of them are the real issue that the gang must prepare for.
