If you wear goggles… do you become strong? I… want to be stronger. I want to become stronger and protect my sister, my Mom, and my Dad! I want to beat the bad guys! They rounded everyone up, and threatened us. Then they made us go to sleep… I wasn’t enough to stop them myself. But… I saw him. A person wearing goggles and riding something that looked like a huge dinosaur! I saw him beat the bad guys!! If I have that kind of power, I can protect everyone. With power, I wouldn’t have allowed us to be captured in the first place. I would have stopped the tears!

Just 02 Stan Things
02 fan base: O M G but wHEN did the 02 Chosen disappear before Tri--- M E, AN INTELLECTUAL: It's under a year. Provided you are not one of the types of fans that believe "I can ignore everything Tri does and call that 'canon' regardless of what the franchise heads state since", In Bokura no Mirai, Takeru states it's 2005, and from the letter we can see it's DECEMBER, specifically close to X-mas. Since 02 ends at the end of 2002, that only gives a window of Jan 2003-Jun 2005. 2003 Spring is when one of the 02 Drama CDs happens, so that narrows the potential timeline to even further, Mar-May 2003 (regardless if Tri depicts the events or not - hell, we can assume the team of Jun and the others fell to Alphamon too!!!) If you pay attention to the timeline Koushiro literally gives us right at the beginning of "Saikai", we can assume the 02 Chosen Children disappeared right when everything "strange" began happening with the "Distortions" - which is implied some months before Tri. We can also assume (due to the fact they quite literally keep their 02 designs but more specifically their Digital World-only outfits) they were IN the Digital World (being affected by the Distortions) when it happened!!!

According to a book released at some point, Jun is 6 years older than Daisuke, which puts her at 17. 3 years older than Yamato.
I would assume that Jun's about the same age as Matt is, else the stalking becomes even creepier
~_~ Why are you stalking a 14-year-old, Jun?

Digimon headcanon-
Daisuke gets the first pair of goggles fixed, because they're Jun's, but he still wears Taichi's goggles. Instead, he gives Jun's goggles to V-mon and it's kinda a gift passing similar to how Jun passed on the goggles to him when she got outgrew them.
Jun thinks this is the most childish thing ever, but she also notes that Daisuke was starting to outgrow her goggles and maybe he didn't want them altered or anything and this way he gets two goggles from those he admires. So maybe it's just a little cute that Daisuke carries around a stuffed animal with her old goggles on it...maybe.

I wish some digimon media would remember that Davis's sister and others are digidestined too.
In an audio drama CD that takes place after 02 it's mentioned that TK and Kari are mentoring a new group of Digidestined including Jun Motomiya (Davis's sister) Momoe Inoue (Yolei's sister) Chizuru Inoue (Yolei's sister) Shuu Kido (Joe's brother)

Ok so tragically, the Trash Son did not have a cameo (that I could see), but here are the other moments of incredibly niche fanservice that pandered specifically to me:
GRANDPA TAKAISHI MENTION!!!! TAICHI’S BEEN IN TOUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
ORYXMON SIGHTING!!!!!!!!!! I love that they showed a bunch of different armor evolutions!!! ☺️
SUBMARIMON!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, it’s amazing Iori still fits in there 🤣
THE WORLD’S HOTTEST JYOU????? They clearly went and put their top character designer on this one XD I REALLY wanted the shine in his hair to be a streak of grey, but I would have already disintegrated into a pile of sawdust if that had been true. Still… A HOT DOCTOR, YOU SAY 👀👀👀
Thank you to the person who left a comment on an old post of mine who made me aware that adult Jun was in this video. JUN!!!!!!!!! I NEED to see her Digimon partner, but this is still good!!!!! 👍👍👍👍
I had to scrub back a zillion times to catch the stealth Maki cameo! WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS HOSPITAL???? WHY IS SHE HERE?!?!?!?!? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone else looked amazing too, obviously. Loved the return of Mimi’s pink hair!
I finally watched the Digimon Adventure Beyond PV, btw 🤣

Alright, quick round of things that I noticed at the top of my head while my brain is still in a sleep-deprived haze:
We have still no idea about the transitional time between Kizuna, The Beginning and this PV, if it takes place in the same universe/timeline, when exactly the Digivices, Agumon, Gabumon and Piyomon returned, etc.
Iori speaks English!
Taichi speaks French!?
Meiko is there! And, apparently, Rui too. (No Menoa to be seen though. You see a glimpse of the kids from the last 02 episode.)
TONS OF ARMOR DIGIMON.
Arukenimon?
Dark spores? Dark Towers? Dark Ocean (HIKARI AND TAKERU SUBPLOT?)
Taito being married (and poor Iori thirdwheeling hard).
Unexpected Sokari (and Tri-esque Koukeru).
Oh hey, Jun Motomiya, Shin and Shuu Kidou made it into this too - and if you see the Kidou brothers, it feels even worse to see that they screwed up Jyou's dark eyes - because both brothers and Koushirou still have pitch-black eyes, while Jyou doesn't. Sad.
You can kinda feel like Kakudou and the more recent character designers were really having to sit down in a room to settle on what design elements to incorporate from which "era". Best example is the hair:
Leaning more closely to 02: Mimi (holy shit, I didn't expect her to go full pink again), Jyou, Yamato.
Leaning more closely to the epilogue: Koushirou (boy is growing out that spikes big time now, ALSO THE PIBOOK IS BACK), Iori, Ken (basically the "boys getting longer hair squad").
Somewhere in between: Taichi (trademark floof cannot be tamed), Sora (her overall design, while being more reminiscing of OWG, felt more like her reboot version though, especially with the hat and the amount of pink), Daisuke (especially the sunglasses were a big nod to Kizuna/The Beginning), Miyako, Hikari (basically the length of The Beginning), Takeru (NO HAT??? BUt again, the necklace is still there).
#my two cents#digimon adventure beyond#i bet i forgot a million things but that was the most prominent stuff

Digimon Adventure 02x20 - Transcendent Evolution! Golden Magnamon / The Darkness Before Dawn
Previously on Digimon Adventure: The Digimon Kaiser was so upset about Taichi refusing to share his Greymon that he went home, locked himself in his room, and 3-D printed his own Greymon! With four arms and dragon wings! Then Takeru showed up to celebrate his accomplishment with birthday punches! And it wasn't even his birthday!
Meanwhile, the Motomiya siblings competed head-to-head to see who is the true master of being abandoned. Jun won. Sorry, Daisuke, but when it comes to alienating people, she's four parallel universes ahead of you. Even you dodge her! That's dedication to the craft.
So round 1 with the Kaiser ended in a wash. We got some hits in. Literally. To his smug face. But Chimeramon is going to be a problem. It's time for round 2.
We open on a city in the Digital World. Chimeramon attacks in the dead of night, raining down shots of Heat Viper to meticulously level the city.
A variety of Digimon including Gotsumon, Woodmon, Delumon, Floramon, Kiwimon, Mushmon, and Gazimon pour out into the streets in the commotion, then try to run for it. But Chimeramon won't let them go and shoots straight down into the city, catching them in the blast.
Once the city has been annihilated, the Digimon Kaiser's fortress floats across the ruins. In its wake, it lays down Dark Towers.
This all goes without dialogue in the original. The dub adds a single calling of Kimeramon's attack at the start of the assault.
Kimeramon: HEAT VIPER!!!
They also censor out the shot of the fleeing Digimon getting caught and obliterated by Heat Viper.
Something I didn't really mention last episode but that deserves noting is that the original kind of... forgot... that the Kaiser's fortress is loud. Really loud. Loud enough that the Chosen Children could hear it moving through the air from like a mile away.
But the dub remembers. Whenever we see the fortress moving in 19 and 20, it's still making that whumping sound they ascribed to it in their version of episode 18.
In his control room, the Kaiser watches the destruction on his screens and laughs maniacally.
Kaiser: Huhuhuhuhu... HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! YES!!! RUN!!! TREMBLE!!! The Digital World is already in the palm of my hand! Hahahahahaha! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Wormmon: Ken-chan.... Wormmon: (thinking) Is this what you want? Is this really it?
Wormmon's unyielding devotion to his abuser is heartbreaking.
In the dub:
Emperor: This is what I call fun! Huhuhu HAHAHAHA!!! Go ahead and run but there's nowhere to hide! Soon I will have control over the entire Digital World! Ahahahahahaha! Wormmon: Oh, Master.... Wormmon: (thinking) Is this really what Ken wants?
The dub takes its first commercial break on that question.
From a nearby mountain, the Chosen Children watch the carnage unfold in the distance. All of their Digimon are in rideable forms, save for Digmon due to lack of convenient river.
Daisuke: Damn you, Chimeramon! How long are they going to keep this up!? Raidramon: What a terrifying creature..... Digmon: They're just attacking without reason. Horusmon: Our Digital World.... Iori: They aren't going to stop until they've burned it all to cinders, are they? Miyako: (shocked) That can't be-- Takeru: (quiet rage) It's unforgivable. Miyako: Huh? Takeru: (outburst) I will never forgive him for creating a Digimon like that!
Takeru's serious about that, too. He doesn't just call it 許せない yurusenai. This is the word that usually gets translated as "Unforgivable" or "I won't forgive you" but can also mean things like "I won't allow it" or "I can't condone it".
(Anime characters walk around refusing to forgive their enemies all the time, and the reason for that is because they'll say 許せない yurusenai to mean something more along the lines of "I won't let you get away with this". But here, he is using it in the past tense and does mean that creating Chimeramon is the point of no return for Ken. In Takeru's mind, there can be no coming back from this. Ken is beyond redemption.
And to really stress that, he refers to Chimeramon's creation as not just 許せない yurusenai but 絶対に許せない zettai ni yurusenai. The word 絶対 zettai is an absolute modifier. Whatever word it modifies, it pushes that word to the absolute extreme. Never, always, forever, total, absolute. That is how pissed Takeru is right now.
Hikari: We have to stop this at all costs! It's in our hands now. Pegasmon: But how? Right now, if we challenge Chimeramon head-on, we won't even stand a chance. Hikari: Well, that's.... Tentomon: That said... How far do you think they plan to go? Iori: Eh?
For clarity, Tentomon means that geographically.
With that city razed to the ground, the fortress and Chimeramon are on the move again and seem to be headed in the team's direction. Iori looks behind him and sees something in the distant desert sands.
Iori: That's...!
A pipeline runs across the desert, directly in the distant path of Chimeramon and the fortress.
In added dialogue as we return from commercial, the dub implies that Kimeramon's been razing cities for a while now.
Kari: Another city destroyed! This is terrible! Davis: Ken does a lot of damage from his flying RV, even if it does look like a giant, flying slug! Kari: And all those poor Digimon! They don't have a home anymore.
Yeeeeeeep. Yeah, that's... That's uh... That's their situation, Kari. Nailed it right on the head. They-They're all homeless, is what they are.
Davis: I'm tired of bad things happening to good Digimon! Raidramon: Wait 'til I get my paws on Ken! Digmon: He's destroying everything in his path! Halsemon: And he shows no signs of letting up. Cody: It's like he wants to burn every square inch of the Digital World! Yolei: Bite your tongue! Tentomon: That can't taste very good. T.K.: I don't care what it takes! I'm going to find a way to stop that thing! Kari: T.K.'s right. We have to destroy it. No matter what it costs us. Pegasusmon: I think everyone agrees but even when we all combine, we still don't have the power to defeat him. Kari: So now what? Tentomon: We have two options: Quit or give up. Because nothing will stop him until he runs out of gas! Cody: Huh? Runs out of gas.... Hmm... Tentomon, you just gave me an idea. Tentomon: I'm sorry! I didn't mean to! (Cody spots the pipeline) Cody: Hey, what's that!? A pipeline!
T.K. is more collected and controlled than Takeru. While Takeru's furiously throwing the phrase 絶対に許せない zettai ni yurusenai at Ken, T.K. has his eye on the ball and simply asserts that they must defeat Kimeramon.
Davis and Raidramon have substantially different lines as well.
Miyako reacts with shock and disbelief when Iori suggests that Chimeramon might try to destroy the entire Digital World. Yolei also disapproves of that statement, but she snaps at Cody for it instead. Which Tentomon quips about.
But the biggest shift in characterization here is how cowardly Tentomon acts.
Back at Yamanakako, Taichi and Yamato are still gathered around Koushiro's laptop with him. A beep at the computer alerts them to an update from the junior team.
The junior team has provided an image of Chimeramon so the veterans can see.
Taichi: That's Chimeramon?
Koushiro cycles through closeups, going over the component parts.
Koushiro: Kabuterimon's head. Angemon and Airdramon's wings. Yamato: Monochromon's tail. Garurumon's legs. Taichi: Greymon's body? And MetalGreymon's hair. Koushiro: Kuwagamon's, SkullGreymon's, and Devimon's arms. Hikari-san sent me photos from various angles so we can understand how they were assembled. Yamato: The Digimon Kaiser... Is he trying to play God? Taichi: The arrogance of that guy.... So how do we kick his ass? Koushiro: Our first step should be to disable his mobile fortress.
Koushiro brings up a picture of the fortress.
Taichi: But... how? Koushiro: Well....
That's easier said than done.
In the dub:
Tai: So he's called Kimeramon? Izzy: He has Kabuterimon's head and the wings of both Angemon and Airdramon. Matt: Monochromon's tail and Garurumon's legs. Tai: He's got Greymon's body and MetalGreymon's hair. Izzy: And Kuwagamon's, SkullGreymon's, and Devimon's arms. Talk about a split personality! Gee, it's a good thing Kari sent us these pictures so we can get a good look at him! Matt: And the Digimon Emperor built this? Couldn't he have stayed with model airplanes like the rest of us!? Tai: That's it! I'm gonna destroy him! ...hey, Izzy, how do I destroy him? Izzy: Before we do that, we first have to figure out how to get him to hold still. (Izzy brings up the photos of the mobile fortress) Tai: How do we do that? His base is always moving?
Sanctuary Bind would probably work, but that's not the question we're trying to answer right now. The dub kids are more focused on fighting Kimeramon than Kimeramon's creator. At least, I think they are? I don't think Tai means he's going to destroy the Digimon Emperor, because "destroy" is American cartoons' PG euphemism for "kill". The 90's equivalent of unaliving someone.
Tai would absolutely say that he's going to unalive Kimeramon. He unalived a lot of Digimon back in the first series. But he's probably not so eager to unalive Ken Ichijouji.
So unless Izzy suddenly switched the topic of his pronouns without alerting the others, they're trying to figure out a way to incapacitate Kimeramon. Which the pipeline plan will not be an answer to.
Koushiro doesn't have to think for too long. A message pops up on Koushiro's screen: "メールが届きました Meiru ga Todokimashita" or "Email Received".
Koushiro: It's an email from Iori-kun. "We've found a pipeline that the mobile fortress is headed towards. Can we use that somehow?" Yamato: A pipeline? Taichi: From where? Koushiro: Let's see....
Koushiro traces the pipeline to the oil rig where the Digimental of Sincerity was found.
Koushiro: Right, it's from that undersea oil rig. Pipeline... Oil... That's it! Taichi: You have an idea? Koushiro: If we play our cards right, we might be able to disable the mobile fortress. Taichi: Really!? Koushiro: (narrating as he types) "Iori-kun, Agumon and the others will join you soon. Then we begin our mission."
Koushiro does not explain what the mission is but it's pretty easy to guess. There aren't a lot of things you can do with a convenient oil pipeline in the enemy's way other than make a particular kind of trap.
In the dub, the message alert is rewritten in English to read "Mail from Cody". The email is also rewritten, which Izzy reads aloud.
Izzy: We're getting another email from Cody. "Izzy, we found a pipeline that will cross paths with Ken's base. I know you can use this information somehow." Heh, he has such confidence in me. Matt: What pipeline? Tai: Hey, look. What's that a picture of? Izzy: I'll check. (Izzy pulls up the oil rig) Izzy: Oh, I get it! The pipeline is connected to the offshore oil platform. An oil pipeline... Pipeline... I've got it! Tai: You figured out how to stop him? Izzy: Actually, no. But I needed an eight-letter word for my crossword puzzle. Tai: Stay on track. Izzy: Oh, right. (starts typing) Actually, I do have a plan that, if we're lucky, just might work. Let's hope these guys can pull it off.
In the dub, apparently someone went and physically scouted all the way to the end of the pipeline so they could send that picture as an attachment. Must've sent Tentomon to do it. In the original, Koushiro just Google Maps it.
While the team's preparing the trap, we cut back to the Digimon Kaiser inside his control room.
While the fortress is in transit, the Kaiser is gawking at various angles of Chimeramon on his screen and giggling to himself. He is way too into this Digimon.
Kaiser: Huhuhuhuhu.... Voice: Huhuhuhuhu....
So is the deep scary voice that may or may not be Devimon. Suddenly the Kaiser gasps and falls to his knees in some sort of mental anguish.
Wormmon: Ken-chan! What's wrong? Kaiser: It's nothing! Wormmon: You should get some rest. You've been on the attack all night. Kaiser: I'm fine.... Voice: Huhuhuhuhu. Ohohohoho! You cannot escape from the World of Darkness anymore. Ken: What are you talking about!? Wormmon: What's wrong, Ken-chan? Voice: Take a good look beneath you.
The Kaiser looks down and sees he's no longer kneeling on the ground. Beneath him is a murky black voice that moves like water. At the sight of it, Ken lets out the most bone-chilling scream of pure terror that we've ever heard from him.
Ken: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! Wormmon: Ken-chan!
Wormmon's voice breaks through whatever is happening. The void abruptly flickers out of existence, leaving the Kaiser back on solid ground. The experience leaves him sweating profusely and gasping for breath.
Wormmon: Are you okay, Ken-chan!? KEN-CHAN!!!
But then he recovers. As if none of that even happened, he starts laughing to himself and stands up, facing the monitors. They are now showing a stationary camera's feed from outside of his own base slowly moving across the desert.
Kaiser: Huhuhuhuhu.... Huhuhuhuhu! Go, Chimeramon! Tomorrow, we will make me Emperor of the Digital World. Huhuhuhu... Hahahahaha! Wormmon: ....
Hey, he said the thing! He's been calling himself Kaiser all this time, using the German word for Emperor. デジモンカイザー Dejimon Kaizaa. But apparently that's just branding because now he says he's about to become デジタルワールドの皇帝 Dejitaru Waarudo no Koutei, using the Japanese word for emperor.
This can only mean he's about to cross the pond and invade the Digimon Emperor's territory! Oh no!
In the dub:
Emperor: I should build a monument to myself! Hehehehe-- Voice: HuhuhuHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! (Emperor falls to his knees in pain) Wormmon: Master, what's wrong? Emperor: Just leave me alone! Wormmon: Why don't you take a timeout from all the destruction? You can start again tomorrow. Emperor: Go away! Voice: Ehehehehehe HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You can't hide from the Darkness! Emperor: WHO ARE YOU!?!? Wormmon: I'm Wormmon. Don't you remember? Voice: Watch your step or you might fall into a hole you didn't even know was there! (Ken looks down) Ken: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! (Void suddenly vanishes) Wormmon: Master, what's wrong? Are you okay? Emperor: Hehe... Hehehehehehehahahahahaha! Now that I have Kimeramon, nothing can stop me from ruling this world! Not even some stupid voice! Huhuhuhuhahahahaha! Wormmon: ...
I really like the "I'm Wormmon. Don't you remember me?" moment. It does a great job of highlighting that only Ken is experiencing the sudden auditory intrusion and perception distortion. In both versions, Wormmon genuinely has no idea what's happening to him, and the dub did a good job of conveying that.
However, they missed the important note that it's Wormmon's voice that pierces the hallucination and brings Ken back to reality. In the dub, it just kind of... stops happening all of a sudden.
Out in the desert, the trap is put into motion.
Agumon, Gabumon, and Tentomon make their way over to a valve on the pipeline.
Agumon: We made it in time. Gabumon: Do you think it will work? Tentomon: Koushiro-han said it's a matter of the timing.
The three Digimon peek up over the pipeline and see the advancing fortress. They also lay eyes on Chimeramon flying in advance of the structure.
Gabumon: So that's Chimeramon. Agumon: Their face is hideous. Tentomon: They're almost here.
Concealed by the pipeline, the three Digimon escape Chimeramon's notice as the creature flies overhead. Then, as the fortress approaches, Agumon gives the command.
Agumon: NOW!!!
They hop up onto the pipeline and open the valve, releasing a spray of oil into the air directly in the fortress's path.
Agumon: BABY FLAME!!! Gabumon: PETIT FIRE!!!
Agumon and Gabumon ignite the oil, engulfing the Kaiser's fortress in flames.
Honestly, we probably only needed one of them here for this but if Koushiro played favorites he'd be hearing about it from Yamato all night.
In the dub:
Agumon: Do you think anyone spotted us? Gabumon: No, I don't think so. Tentomon: Let's go topside and scout the situation. (The Digimon peek over the pipeline) Tentomon: On second thought, let's go below and hide! (They pop back down) Gabumon: I changed my mind! I wanna go home! Agumon: No! We have to follow Izzy's plan. Tentomon: Get ready! Here he comes! (Kimeramon passes overhead) Agumon: Let's do it! (They open the valve and release the oil) Agumon: Alright, go for it! PEPPER BREATH!!! Gabumon: BLUE BLASTER!!!
Tentomon and now Gabumon are once again rewritten to be more cowardly than in the original. Only Agumon ends up looking good here.
Inside his control room, the Kaiser sees the sudden burst of flames shooting up on the exterior feed.
Kaiser: Where did that fire come from?
Snapping out of it, he whips around and gives the command.
Kaiser: HURRY UP AND PUT OUT THAT FIRE!!!
...which I guess he's saying to Wormmon because it's not like he has anyone else working in this fortress. And Iori meticulously freed all of his captives yesterday.
The next fifteen seconds are just various silent angles of the fortress floating along while visibly on fire.
In the dub:
Emperor: Where'd these flames come from!? (Emperor whips around) Emperor: Hurry and get the fire extinguisher!
That's not gonna cut it, my dude. Really should have sprung for an emergency sprinkler system. I hope the fortress is insured.
The dub, of course, fills those empty five seconds with offscreen dialogue.
Agumon: Very efficient, Gabumon! Gabumon: Thanks, Agumon. You were pretty hot yourself! Tentomon: What am I, invisible? So sue me; I don't have dragon's breath! Let's see you guys try flying!
Bad news about their Mega forms, Tentomon.
From a nearby cliffside, the Chosen Children lie in wait.
Daisuke, Miyako, Hikari, and Takeru all have their Digimon in their travel forms. As with yesterday, Iori's stuck with Digmon because Submarimon can't go on land.
Daisuke: Alright, while the Kaiser's distracted, we storm the place! Iori: There's the entrance to the fortress!
Iori points out a doorway on one of the metal platforms jutting out from the stone wall. Not the cave they used yesterday but a different entryway.
Daisuke: Let's go, Raidramon! RAAAAAAGH!!!
Raidramon leaps from the cliff's edge, landing on the platform below.
Daisuke: FOLLOW MY LEAD!!! Takeru: (amused) He's a perfect assault team commander, isn't he? Miyako: (annoyed) This is so stupid. Hikari: Ehehe....
From Takeru's tone of voice, he's probably poking fun at Daisuke here. In flippant and jokey voice, Takeru says Daisuke fits perfectly in the role of 突撃隊長 totsugeki taicho. That means the 隊長 Taicho, the commanding officer, of a 突撃 totsugeki which means a frontal charge or assault. Which Miyako then ridicules and Hikari laughs at.
In the dub:
Kari: Look! Izzy's plan worked! Davis: Well, the first part of it, anyway. Alright, while he's busy taking care of his emergency, we'll sneak in! Cody: Hey guys, look down there! Do you see that small door? I bet that's the entrance! Davis: Let's go, Raidramon! YEAH!!! (Raidramon jumps) Davis: Am I good or what? T.K.: If he keeps telling himself that, he might start to believe it! Yolei: At least someone will. Kari: Ahaha!
T.K. is absolutely poking fun at Davis here.
In the original, we are not sneaking in. We snuck in yesterday. Infiltrated the base, and did some reconnaissance alongside the impromptu rescue mission. Today, the plan is to blitz the fortress's critical weak point while the Kaiser's still disoriented from the fire. That's why Daisuke lets out a battle roar as Raidramon clears the gap and then basically yells "CHARGE" at the team.
Izzy's plan, however, apparently calls for another stealthy infiltration. So Davis let's out a "YEAH!!!" while he's up on the cliff, says nothing as Raidramon clears the gap, and his declaration on landing is much more muted and personal.
If we wanted to sneak in, we probably shouldn't have set the place on fire. That's sure to put the Emperor on high alert.
As the children enter the base, Tentomon's team finishes their part by closing the oil valve and killing the flames.
Agumon: This is as far as we go. Tentomon: The rest is up to you. Gabumon: Do what you have to do.
A world apart at Yamanakako, Koushiro receives an email alert.
Koushiro: Looks like it worked. Taichi: Whew.... Yamato: But will they be okay in there? Boarding the enemy stronghold like that.... Taichi: All we can do now is wait... And have faith in them. Koushiro: You're right.
With their part settled, Taichi looks up at the stars above. Wistfully, he says:
Taichi: Looks like it's going to be a sleepless night. For us, for Daisuke and the others, and especially for the Digimon Kaiser.
This would be a fantastic line to go to commercial on but we're like two minutes too early for that.
In the dub:
Agumon: Well, guys, we've done everything we can. Now what? Tentomon: There's only one thing left to do now! Gabumon: Yeah, let's hit the sushi bar! (Cut to Campsite) Izzy: Part one of the plan went well. Tai: Great! Matt: Will they be okay? They're in the most dangerous possible place! Tai: We're just going to have to trust them. This time, they're on their own. Izzy: Good luck you guys. (Tai looks up at the stars) Tai: We'd better get ready for a long night. I don't think any of us are going to sleep. I bet the Digimon Emperor won't. And I know Davis and the others won't sleep either.
The dub tries its best but totally butchers that really cool line.
Agumon, Gabumon, and Tentomon are being goofy and not really fitting the tone of this tense moment.
Inside the Kaiser's fortress, the Chosen Children ride their Digimon down a cavernous hall. Even Iori's taken up a perch on Digmon's shoulder.
A hall that, frankly, seems awfully underdeveloped given that it had its own dedicated entryway platform and everything. Kaiser got lazy about his construction.
For ten seconds, they march in silence. The only sound echoing in the halls is the sound of their marching footsteps. Then, as they approach a light at the end of the tunnel, Daisuke speaks up.
Daisuke: That's the way in.
He speaks so confidently despite not being one of the two people who've ever been here before. He's right, it opens up into the same generator room that Iori had to climb a flight of stairs to reach. But Daisuke's startled by what he sees.
Daisuke: W-What the...?
At the front of the group, Daisuke and Miyako disembark from their Digimon to get a closer look. Slack-jawed and wide-eyed, they gawk at the structure within. The device extends out of sight both up and down. Looking down, Takeru spots their target.
Takeru: That's it! That's the generator room! Daisuke: Alright, then that's where we go to shut this huge place down.
Daisuke is over his momentary shock and has his eye on the ball.
In the dub, they add some dialogue to fill those ten seconds of marching. Playing off of Tai saying that "Davis and the others won't sleep either", Davis delivers the punchline.
Davis: (yawn) I'm exhausted. Let's stop and sleep. T.K.: Not yet. Let's keep going a little bit further.
...are they planning to make camp inside the Emperor's fortress at some point? The joke is the stock "Character says a thing and then we cut to another character immediately contradicting them" gag but it makes no sense in context.
Davis: Hey guys, look! There's a light at the end of the tunnel! T.K.: Couldn't you think of something a little more original? (They arrive at the base proper's entrance) Davis: Hey! Look at that! T.K.: Wow! It looks like something out of a science fiction movie! Davis: Yeah, and I'm the hotshot pilot who rescues Princess Kari from the bad space guy. Kari: You said science fiction, not complete fantasy! (Davis and Yolei gawk up at the power generator) Yolei: Boy, I bet he gets great reception with that TV antenna! (Davis and Yolei gawk down at the power generator) Yolei: Oh, and he must get all the underground stations with that one! T.K.: Down there. That's where the engine room is. Davis: Figures! How come the engine room is never on the same floor as the front door!?
Lot of quipping including a reasonable Star Wars reference to this Star Wars-ass structure. Also T.K. is inexplicably surprised to see the interior of the Emperor's base despite having been here yesterday.
Watching the monitors in the control room, Wormmon spots the intruders.
Wormmon: Ken-chan, it's them! Kaiser: They came back? Then I guess we'd better welcome them.
So much for the distraction. Back in the corridor, Daisuke gives the command.
Daisuke: Alright, let's go!
The team turns towards another hallway. The doors open up in front of them and release 16 Bakemon, all decorated in Evil Rings. So that's who put out the fire.
Unfortunately for the Bakemon, the swelling tones of 02's fuck-em-up theme Break Up pick up as they enter the hall.
Miyako: Oh, wow. Iori: That's quite a welcome. Hikari: Sure is. Daisuke: Yeah, but... THEY WON'T GET IN OUR WAY!!!
Remember, the plan is not a stealthy infiltration. We're here to blitz. We are going straight through all defenses.
In the dub:
Wormmon: Look, Master, we have more guests. Should I put together another hors d'oeuvres tray? Emperor: How convenient. I can finish off those kids without leaving home. (Cut to hallway) Davis: What's that sound!? (Everyone turns to the doors, which release Bakemon) Davis: Look, Bakemon! Yolei: At least they're small! Cody: Something tells me they're not here to welcome us. Kari: Cody's right. Davis: No problem! WE'LL WELCOME THEM INSTEAD!!!
The dub kids are not supported by the swelling of a fight song, instead just getting the usual peril BGM. They also undercut Davis a bit by not letting him order the team to move out. But his last line still goes appropriately hard.
The Bakemon surge forward from the other hall, but the Armor Digimon open fire at once.
Raidramon: BLUE THUNDER!!! Digmon: GOLD RUSH!!! Horusmon: RED SUN!!! Nefertimon: NILE JEWELRY!!! Pegasmon: NEEDLE RAIN!!! Daisuke: Now! Quickly!
The frontal assault overwhelms the entire swarm, breaking off their Evil Rings and leaving them disoriented in the hall. The Chosen Children charge straight through them and seize the other hallway before its doors can close.
In the dub:
Raidramon: THUNDER BLAST!!! Digmon: GOLD RUSH!!! Halsemon: EAGLE EYE!!! Nefertimon: QUEEN PAW!!! Pegasusmon: MANE WIND!!! Davis: Let's leave while the ghosts are spooked!
Red Sun and Nile Jewelry, typically called incorrectly as Tempest Wing and Rosetta Stone which are different attacks, are finally given the new names Eagle Eye and Queen Paw. Fitting, as Red Sun is fired as a set of optic lasers and Queen Paw is fired from the jewels on Nefertimon's front legs.
Pegasusmon also has a new attack name... accidentally. Needle Rain is typically called as Wind Mane but he fucking says it wrong and I guess they just didn't shoot another take. Why they don't just use stock recordings for the attacks is beyond me.
The Chosen Children continue down a rounded hallway which circles the central shaft. But the Kaiser's attention is on them now.
Kaiser: It's futile.
At the other end, they enters a huge chamber with a wide open space in the middle and various storage boxes to either side.
Iori: This looks like a hangar.... Daisuke: It's the size of a soccer field....
Which, unfortunately, means it's large enough for the Kaiser's counterattack. The structure shakes violently and the ceiling begins to crack.
Daisuke: What's going on!?
Then the ceiling collapses. With it, Break Up abruptly cuts out. We are no longer in control of this situation as Chimeramon descends into the hangar.
Daisuke: (with resolve) Chimeramon...!
So much for the blitz plan. All we can do now is settle in for a very hard fight. And with that, we go to commercial.
In the dub:
Emperor: What's your hurry? (The team enters the hangar) Davis: Wow, this place is huge! I bet you can't play soccer in here. Kari: With who? He doesn't have any friends. (Ceiling cracks and room quakes) Davis: What's going on!? (Chimeramon breaks through) Davis: Oh no, it's Chimeramon!
The dub also takes its second commercial break here, after Davis's much more nervous read of Daisuke's final line.
Davis's soccer reference feels forced and random compared to Daisuke's, but Kari twists it into a pretty sick burn.
We return from commercial on the menacing sight of Chimeramon ahead.
Who is then joined by a small army of much less menacing Bakemon.
Takeru: Tch! We were so close to the generator room! Raidramon: Daisuke, get down and hide. Daisuke & Takeru: Huh? Raidramon: Chimeramon's too strong. This is impossible unless we all fight together. Pegasmon: Takeru, please let us handle this. Takeru: Pegasmon.... Nefertimon: Don't worry, Hikari. Hikari: But.... Digmon: We'll be okay-dagyaa. Horusmon: Hurry, Miyako-san! Miyako: Understood.
The Children dismount, running for the side of the room.
Daisuke: We're counting on all of you! Raidramon: Let's go.
At Raidramon's command, the five Armor Digimon charge into battle unaccompanied. Well, four do; Digmon remains where he is, lacking the others' mobility. There is no heroic music to support them this time. This is going to be ugly.
In the dub:
Davis: More Bakemon!? What did Ken do, buy them by the dozen!? T.K.: Yeah, I can't believe it. We were almost in the engine room! Raidramon: Davis, you and the others go and hide. Davis & T.K.: Huh!? Raidramon: Kimeramon is really strong. It's going to take all of us to fight and it might get ugly. Pegasusmon: I agree. You need to stay clear, T.K. T.K.: You guys be careful. Nefertimon: Don't worry, Kari. Kari: I'll try. Digmon: Save us some snacks for when this is all over! Yolei: Let's go, guys! (The DigiDestined dismount) Davis: We can hide over here!
As the Digimon charge into battle, the dub does play a heroic soundtrack to accompany them. They kick up one of their own fuck-em-up themes, Going Digital.
The DigiDestined are a lot less reluctant to leave their Partners than the Chosen Children are. The severity of this situation seems lost on them.
The Children take cover in the stacks of shipping containers while the battle with the Bakemon horde commences. Chimeramon does not initially participate.
It's mostly just a replay of the animation from the previous Bakemon fight.
Raidramon: BLUE THUNDER!!! Horusmon: RED SUN!!! Nefertimon: NILE JEWELRY!!! Pegasmon: NEEDLE RAIN!!! Daisuke: YEAH!!! Iori: Ah!
Iori points to a ring of seven Bakemon above that are twirling in a circle and slowly moving towards the children.
Digmon: GOLD RUSH!!! Iori: Thank you, Digmon!
In the one new bit of animation for this part of the fight, Digmon's drills take out those Bakemon and protect the kids.
In the dub:
Raidramon: THUNDER BLAST!!! Halsemon: EAGLE EYE!!! Nefertimon: QUEEN PAW!!! Pegasusmon: MANE WIND!!! Daisuke: ALRIGHT!!! Cody: Look! (Bakemon incoming) Digmon: GOLD RUSH!!! Cody: Great job! Thanks a lot, Digmon! Digmon: Don't mention it.
Pegasusmon is still saying Mane Wind. They probably just reused the voice clips from the earlier part of the fight here. Still baffled that they aren't stock recordings.
For funsies, when we briefly see Digmon post-firing with the drills missing from his face, he's voice like he has a stuffy nose.
With many of the Bakemon now out of the way, the four mobile Digimon charge Chimeramon.
It does not go well.
With the remaining Bakemon still between Chimeramon and the Armor Digimon, the creature lets off a single shot of Heat Viper. The beam cuts straight through and slaughters the Bakemon.
The four Armor Digimon swerve out of the way, evading the beam. But even then, just being near the beam throws them across the hangar and slams them against the ceiling and far wall.
The shot lands just a few feet from Digmon, who is similarly hurled against the shipping containers.
Daisuke: So much power! Hikari: Even though they dodged it! Takeru: (fuming) They don't even care about hitting their own allies.
Daisuke and Hikari are freaking out while Takeru's offended on the Bakemon's behalf. In the control room, the Kaiser and Wormmon also have opinions on that attack.
Wormmon: Ken-chan, if they keep this up, they'll bring down the whole fortress! Kaiser: I know!
Yeah, they're freaking out too.
In the dub, Kimeramon calls his attack.
Kimeramon: HEAT VIPER!!! (Bakemon die instantly; Armor Digimon get slammed around) Davis: He's too powerful! Kari: And they weren't even hit! T.K.: He doesn't care who he hits! He's totally out of control! (Cut to control room) Wormmon: Master, at this rate, he'll destroy the whole base. Emperor: I. DON'T. CARE!!!
The Kaiser's last line is... ambiguous. He yells "分かってる Wakatteru!" in a strained tone of voice that's difficult to parse. He's either freaking out right alongside Wormmon or he's already accepted the destruction of the fortress as an acceptable consequence and is snapping at Wormmon for telling him something he already knows.
Personally, I think it's a bit of both. He's freaking out. I think Chimeramon killing the Bakemon assigned to them and then punching the base itself so hard it shook was not something that the Kaiser anticipated. But he's not quite willing to pull back yet. He's going to let this play out for now.
By contrast, the dub line is very clear-cut. The Emperor is willing to sacrifice his fortress if it means Kimeramon's triumph.
One other note: the dub abruptly kills Going Digital when Kimeramon fires. It's on a good spot, too, because it doesn't simply fizzle out and end. The drums and guitar are gearing up for another chorus when Heat Viper suddenly silences them. It's very effective.
The Armor Digimon recover and make another assault against Chimeramon.
Raidramon: BLUE THUNDER!!! Digmon: GOLD RUSH!!! Horusmon: TEMPEST WING!!! Pegasmon: SHOOTING STAR!!! Nefertimon: ROSETTA STONE!!!
Five attacks converge on Chimeramon at once, exploding in a Dragon Ball Z dust cloud.
Daisuke: (excited) Did we get them?
But the dust settles and reveals Chimeramon perfectly unharmed.
Hikari: Our attacks didn't work! Daisuke: They really are a monster.... Miyako: Even with everyone attacking at once, we couldn't even scratch them! Iori: They're strong... They're too strong! Takeru: Isn't there something we can do!?
There is not. This thing is in a league of their own.
In the dub:
Raidramon: THUNDER BLAST!!! Digmon: GOLD RUSH!!! Halsemon: TEMPEST WING!!! Pegasmon: STAR SHOWER!!! Nefertimon: ROSETTA STONE!!! Davis: We got him! (Dust clears; No dice) Kari: It had no effect! Davis: That's impossible! Yolei: They used their best attacks and he doesn't have a single scratch on him! Cody: Now what!? What else can we do!? T.K.: There's just nothing we can do right now, Cody, except watch.
Attack list is good. They use the designated attack names for all of their moves.
According to Yolei, these are their "best attacks". Apparently there is a hierarchy of attack strengths that has never been mentioned before.
There's also a tonal shift in T.K.'s line. Takeru is infuriated by his own helplessness while T.K. matter-of-factly tells Cody that they're helpless.
With all of our actions played, the Chosen Children are forced to End Turn and pass it back to Chimeramon.
Spamming Heat Viper, Chimeramon fires again and again and again. They never hit their targets, but the raw power of the attack makes up for their poor accuracy.
One shot sends Raidramon and Pegasmon flying. Another throws Digmon. Then another slams Raidramon around again, followed by another to Pegasmon, to Horusmon, to Nefertimon. Armor Digimon thrown around like helpless ragdolls by these overwhelming blasts.
And with every shot, the fortress shakes. The hangar's riddled with craters and broken off sections of wall.
Hikari: At this rate, they're just wasting their power!
This isn't a fight. It's a slaughter.
In the dub:
Kimeramon: HEAT VIPER!!!
To avoid having to repeat the words "Heat Viper" so much that it becomes obnoxious, Kimeramon only calls the first shot.
Kari: They can't take much more! He'll destroy them!
In a rare twist, Kari's line is actually darker than Hikari's. Hikari says this shitstomp is going to burn out their Digimon's energy, which would revert them to their base forms. Kari goes one step further and says no, Kimeramon's going to fucking kill them. Which is a valid concern to have right now.
Hikari's line is there as exposition. She brings up "wasting power" to set up what follows. Digmon is the first to run out.
As his back slams into a stack of shipping containers, Digmon lets out one last exclamation.
Digmon: I can't-dagyaa....
And then his energy runs out. The Digimental of Knowledge returns to Iori and Digmon reverts all the way back into Upamon.
Upamon: Upamon.... Iori: UPAMON!!!
Horusmon, twitching on the ground where Chimeramon left him, is next to follow.
Horusmon: ...my power.... (Horusmon reverts to Poromon) Miyako: POROMON!!!
Next is Raidramon.
Raidramon: Daisuke... I'm sorry.... (Raidramon reverts to Chibimon) Daisuke: CHIBIMON!!!
Finally, Nefertimon and Pegasmon run out of steam.
Nefertimon: I can't go on.... (Nefertimon and Pegasmon revert to Tailmon and Patamon) Hikari: TAILMON!!! Takeru: PATAMON!!!
This fight is over. We have nothing left. Though the veterans show they're cut from a different cloth by only fizzling back into their Adult and Child forms respectively.
In the dub:
Digmon: I've got that shrinkin' feeling! (Digmon reverts to Upamon) Upamon: Uh-oh.... Cody: UPAMON!!! Halsemon: Ooogh... harrumph! (Halsemon reverts to Poromon) Yolei: POROMON, OH NO!!! Raidramon: DAVIIIIIIS!!! (Raidramon reverts to DemiVeemon) Davis: DEMIVEEMON!!! Nefertimon: I can't hold it! (Nefertimon and Pegasusmon revert to Gatomon and Patamon) Kari: GATOMON!!! T.K.: PATAMON!!!
Digmon quips over what is essentially him losing consciousness from getting beat up. And Halsemon harrumphs. The rest are fine.
Watching from his control room, the Kaiser notices something weird about his Baby-form enemies.
Kaiser: Those little ones... Haven't I...?
Then it hits him. He suddenly remembers that day at the soccer field, during his match against Daisuke. Those stuffed animals that Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori had with them.
Kaiser: Back then.... Wormmon: (worried) Their physical bodies won't be able to withstand attacks like that. Kaiser: (shocked) What? Physical bodies... They're alive?
Then he remembers spying on them from the foot bridge after the game. Daisuke chatting with Chibimon and Miyako tugging at Poromon's cheek.
The Digimon Kaiser suddenly realizes a grievous misunderstanding that he's been holding.
In the dub:
Emperor: Wait a minute. Those little Digimon... I've seen them before.... (Flashback to soccer game) Emperor (V.O.): Now I remember. It was at that soccer game when I first met those kids. (End Flashback) Emperor: They're so little.... Wormmon: That's right. They're just like human babies. Emperor: What!? I never thought of it before. Human babies...? (Silent flashback to post-game spying)
No extra dialogue for the second flashback. The dub emphasizes the Digimon being juvenile in this form, which isn't really the point. The Kaiser's met Baby Digimon before. He had Pagumon enslaved to him at one point.
The point is that they're real. He has seen these Digimon physically present in the real world with his own eyes. They are living beings with real, living bodies and not just NPCs in a virtual environment.
Wrestling with this shocking revelation, the Kaiser gives a surprising command.
Kaiser: Chimeramon, halt the attack!
At the Kaiser's command, Chimeramon suddenly freezes in the hangar.
Takeru: Chimeramon just stopped. Daisuke: What's going on? Hikari: Now, while we have the chance!
The Children sprint out from the shipping containers and race to their battered Partners. At the same time, the Kaiser departs his control room.
Kaiser: Those rats... This is how I'm going to crush them. Wormmon: Ken-chan....
A shocking revelation, but the Kaiser isn't giving up yet. He's still out for blood.
Translation note: この手 kono te literally translates to "This hand/These hands", but it's also a turn-of-phrase that can mean "This method or way of doing things".
In this case, I don't think the Kaiser literally means, "I'm going to grind them to dust with my bare hands." That implies an intent to jump in and start personally throwing punches at the other kids, which is not what he does when he gets there.
In the dub:
Emperor: Kimeramon, stop! (Kimeramon stops) T.K.: He stopped moving! Davis: What's going on!? Kari: Now's our chance; Let's go! (The kids go for their Digimon) Emperor: I'll deal with those kids on my own. Wormmon: Master...?
He will not. This is better than literally translating "by my hands" but runs afoul of the same problem. Which is to say, he has no intention of doing anything on his own. Honestly, this was a hard line to translate in the context of the episode.
Back in the hangar, the Chosen Children regroup and discuss where we go from here.
Takeru: We have to escape. Daisuke: Escape? Takeru: We can't fight anymore. We have to retreat and wait for another opportunity. Hikari: You're right. That's all we can do. Iori: Understood. Daisuke: No! Miyako: Daisuke?
As Daisuke speaks, a soft and slow remix of the opening theme Target plays behind him.
Daisuke: You can't just prattle off "another opportunity" like that. If we fall back now, then obviously they'll go right back to wildly attacking everything in sight! We don't know that we'll ever even be able to breach this fortress again. So we have to act now!
It's a strong speech, but it's met only with hostility from the rest of the team. Takeru, Miyako, and Iori all fix sharp glares on Daisuke, while Hikari carries her glare in her words.
Hikari: That's insane. Iori: Yeah! Miyako: They've all been reduced to their Baby forms!
They have not. The camera even scans from Tailmon to Patamon as she says this as if to call attention to her error. But the point is made all the same.
Chibimon: (weakly) Daisuke.... Daisuke: But... you guys saw that, right?
Daisuke flashes back on Chimeramon's massacre in the Digimon village before. The brutal annihilation of both the town and its inhabitants.
Daisuke (V.O.): The way they destroyed that city... while we could only watch in silence. I don't ever want to see something like that again. (End flashback) Daisuke: I can't let them have their way anymore! So I'll go alone, then! I refuse to give up now! After coming this far, all I can do is move forward!
The Inheritor of Courage, everybody. Reckless and bold, determined to cope with his trauma by punching it out of the people who inflicted it. Taichi would be proud.
In the dub:
T.K.: Let's get out of here. Davis: You mean leave!? T.K.: Our plan didn't work because our Digimon weren't strong enough. Sometimes you just have to fall back, come up with a new plan, and try again. Kari: Besides, they don't have enough strength to keep going. Cody: I'm with T.K. Davis: Well, I'm not! Group: Huh? Davis: Look, guys, we can't just give up and leave now. We might not ever get a chance like this again. And how do we know he won't start attacking again? Come on, he's just standing there like a big, ugly stuffed animal! Let's finish what we came here to do! Kari: It's impossible. Cody: Kari's right. Yolei: Davis, look around. Most of our Digimon have returned to their In-Training forms. Chibimon: We didn't mean to! Davis: I just can't forget what happened. (Flashback) Davis (V.O.): We had to sit around and watch as this mix-and-match monster destroyed everything. It didn't matter who got in his way. (End flashback) Davis: I don't know about the rest of you but I can't stand by and let that happen again! And if none of you want to go with me, then I'm going in alone because I refuse to give up until this thing is completely destroyed once and for all!
Part of the flashback replays the censored footage of Chimeramon's blast consuming the villagers. The dub censors that out here as well.
T.K. blames the Digimon for this defeat which rubs me the wrong way.
Davis's speech overall does a pretty good job of translating Daisuke's. One notable change is the "he might start attacking again" bit. The concern is that, if we withdraw, then the Kaiser and Chimeramon will obviously just start sacking the Digimon World again. Destroying population centers and slaughtering Digimon.
This is the central point of Daisuke's whole speech. If we leave now, our failure will have a body count.
The way Davis makes it sound, it comes across like "Kimeramon might start attacking us again at any moment so we need to quit chitchatting and strike while the iron's hot!"
The others aren't with Daisuke. But Chibimon hops up onto Daisuke's head with what strength he has and casts his vote.
Chibimon: Let's go, Daisuke. Daisuke: Chibimon.... Chibimon: If you're going, then I'm going to! Daisuke: YES!!! Chibimon, hold on tight!
Daisuke sprints around Chimeramon, going straight for a pulley chain at the edge of the hanger. Grabbing onto it, he lowers himself into the generator room and leaps for one of its scaffoldings.
Which he misses. Daisuke doesn't quite get the distance he needs and ends up barely grabbing onto the underside, dangling over a most certainly lethal drop.
Daisuke: (terrified) Ohhh, that was close.... Chibimon: Please be more careful, Daisuke....
Turns out big hero moments are easier said than done. Still, A for spirit and effort.
In the dub:
DemiVeemon: I'm going with you, Davis! Davis: Are you sure? DemiVeeemon: Come on, do you really have to ask? Davis: Alright, then! Let's go! (Davis jumps on the chain and descends) DemiVeemon: Hold on! Let me put on my safety belt! Davis: Ow! That's not a safety belt! That's my hair! (Davis jumps for the scaffolding and misses) Davis: Maybe this wasn't a good idea. DemiVeemon: So what do we do now?
Solid.
Back in the hangar, the rest of the team considers their options. They quickly reach a decision.
Takeru: We should go too. Iori: Yes! Miyako: We can't let Daisuke be the only cool one. Hikari: He really is our assault team commander.
Here, Hikari brings back Takeru's previous joke about Daisuke being 突撃隊長 totsugeki taicho, only this time she says it sincerely. Daisuke earned everybody's respect in that moment.
The rest of the team runs for the pulley chain as well. But it's at that moment that the Digimon Kaiser arrives.
Kaiser: Chimeramon! Resume the attack! Takeru: Digimon Kaiser!?
The team stops, turning to face Chimeramon. Chimeramon....
Chimeramon...
Eh.
Chimeramon glances at them for a moment and then fucks off. Taking to the air, Chimeramon flies back up into the hole they came from.
Turns out Ken doesn't have enough Gym Badges to control a 'mon of their level.
Kaiser: Where are you going, Chimeramon!? CHIMERAMON!!!
The Kaiser's words fall on deaf ears. Chimeramon disappears through the hole in the roof. Then that deep voice returns, filling the hangar with laughter.
Takeru: That voice....
Not only do the others hear it this time, but Takeru seems to recognize it. Which pretty much confirms that yes, that is Devimon.
Haunted by the laughing voice, Ken drops to his hands and knees. He trembles, trying to resist, trying to hold on.
Wormmon: Ken-chan! Hang in there, Ken-chan-- Kaiser: SHUT UP!!!
Beneath him, Ken sees the flowing, liquid darkness once more.
Kaiser: (thinking) I'm not afraid... Not even of something as dreadful as the power of Darkness. I am the king of this world. The power of Darkness is mine to command. Wormmon: (thinking) I knew it. I should have tried harder to stop him when he went to retrieve the Darkness data. Now the only one who can protect Ken-chan is me, but I.... Takeru: He tried to use the power of Darkness but he ended up being used by it instead. Alright, let's go straight for the generator room!
Sucks to be him. Anyway, we have a base to blow up, LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOO!!!
In the dub:
T.K.: Well, I guess it's our turn. Cody: Right. Yolei: If Davis thinks he's going to take all the credit for this, he can forget it! Kari: Yeah, right. He'd take credit for inventing the wheel!
Really? We're going to shit-talk Davis now?
(The team runs for the pulley chain) Emperor: Kimeramon, don't let them get away! T.K.: It's the Digimon Emperor! (Kimeramon fucks off) Emperor: Kimeramon, where are you going!? KIMERAMON!!! (Kimeramon leaves; Voice starts laughing) T.K.: What's that weird voice!? Wormmon: Ken, what's wrong? Ken! Emperor: Leave me alone! Emperor: (thinking) I have nothing to be scared of. The powers of Darkness mean nothing to me. I'm still the ruler of this world!
The dub takes its third commercial break here, then picks right back up after Ken's internal monologue. But they cut the footage up a bit, splicing a replay of the Emperor staring into the murky liquid Darkness inbetween parts of Wormmon's monologue.
Wormmon: (thinking) I knew Ken was doing things he shouldn't have been doing. I wish just one time he would listen to me. Emperor: (thinking) Once I find Kimeramon, nothing can stop me! Wormmon: (thinking) Now I'm the only one who can protect him. Okay, Wormmon, let's see what you're made of! T.K.: Ken must have tried to control the powers of Darkness but it was too much for him! Okay, everybody, this is our chance to get to the engine room and destroy it!
T.K. does not recognize Devimon's voice. The line is a sentence fragment. "この声わ Kono koe wa...?" which literally means "This voice is...?" So it leaves something to the imagination. You have to really interpret that.
Listening to him deliver it, you can hear the recognition in his delivery. He sounds haunted. If you saw the previous episode then you should already know why.
But just looking at words on a script, it's not hard to come to the conclusion that he's sincerely asking a question.
The Kaiser deludedly declares that he's mastered the power of Darkness while the Emperor deludedly declares that Darkness "means nothing to me", as if he didn't go out of his way to obtain it yesterday.
Similarly, Dub Wormmon delivers an incredibly generic line about Ken "doing things he shouldn't have been doing" when the original line is very specifically about going into the Dark Whirlpool. I swear, it feels like each episode of this multi-parter was written by a different writer who wasn't aware of the other parts. The cross-episode continuity is nonexistent.
Down below, Daisuke pulls himself up on the scaffolding. Not far now to the generator.
Daisuke: That's the generator room.
As he hoists himself over the side and stands up, he finds one last obstacle between him and his target. All by himself, Wormmon hops down, impeding Daisuke's path.
Daisuke: You're... the Kaiser's.... Wormmon: Follow me.
Offering no resistance, Wormmon turns towards the generator and gestures for Daisuke to follow.
Daisuke: Huh? Wormmon: Hurry up. You're looking for the generator room, right? Daisuke: Why would you tell me that!? Are you trying to lead me into a trap!? Wormmon: YOU'RE WRONG!!!
Wormmon screams that and furiously whips back around towards Daisuke. He honestly seems offended at the suggestion.
Wormmon: All I want is to save Ken-chan! Chimeramon is horrifying. Ever since we created them, I feel like Ken-chan's been moving towards somewhere I can't reach. And unless Chimeramon is defeated soon, he won't be able to come back.
I mean, if you ask Takeru, he already hit that point yesterday. In fact, Wormmon said so too, but it is unfortunately our nature to keep shifting the goalposts for the people we love, isn't it?
Wormmon: Please... I need you to trust me. Daisuke: I see. Wormmon: Eh? Daisuke: I believe in you. Wormmon: Thank you! Come on, this way!
Despite everything, Daisuke's empathy shines through. He puts his faith in Wormmon's sincere love for Ken-chan and follows him to the generator room.
In the dub:
Davis: Next time, you climb and I'll sit on your head. That looks like the engine room! (Suddenly, Wormmon!) Davis: Get out of the way! I know who you are! Wormmon: This way. Davis: Huh? Wormmon: The engine room is over here. Follow me. Davis: Do I look stupid to you!? Never mind. This is some kind of trap! Wormmon: No! Listen, you have to believe me, this isn't a trap! I'm trying to save my Master. He created this awful Digimon, Chimeramon, and now he can't control it anymore. I'm afraid things have gone too far and I'm losing him. I hope that if you destroy this place, I'll be able to get him back. I'm willing to help you if you help me. What do you say? Is it a deal? Davis: Alright, I'll do it. Wormmon: You will? Davis: Sure! I'm not as big a jerk as people think! Wormmon: Really? You're not? Thanks! Come on!
In absence of other characters to do it, Davis takes on the burden of dunking on Davis this time around.
The dub suggests that Wormmon only now started worrying about Ken because Chimeramon shirked orders and flew away. But this has been a problem for Wormmon since the Dark Whirlpool. Making it sound like everything was fine and dandy until five minutes ago really undercuts his decision to effectively betray Ken for Ken's own good.
Wormmon has exhausted every possible avenue to make Ken see reason. Now, the only avenue left for him is to ensure Ken loses to the foe that would see him defeated and not the one that would see him consumed.
Daisuke and Wormmon enter the generator room. The air is hazy with... radiation? Feels like radiation.
Chibimon: What's that? It's like the place is filled with some kind of incredible energy. Daisuke: What's going on here? Chibimon: It's coming from that black thing.
Chibimon directs Daisuke's attention to a black object sitting on a pedestal in the center of the generator. The boys go in to take a closer look.
Wormmon: Ken-chan found that. This is what allows the fortress to move. Daisuke: So then if we remove it, the fortress will shut down. But how?
Question of the hour.
In the dub:
DemiVeemon: Do you feel that? It's like the whole room is full of some kind of energy. Davis: What do you think it is? DemiVeemon: I don't know but it's coming from that black thing! (The boys head in) Wormmon: Ken found that. Somehow the power from it is making this base move. Davis: Okay, so all we have to do is take it away and then the base will stop moving. We'll never be able to lift it!
They stay on script right until the end, when Davis abruptly exclaims for no clear reason that the object must be too heavy to move.
So how are we supposed to move the object? As if on cue, the object itself answers the question.
As Daisuke approaches the pedestal, the black object levitates into the air.
Daisuke: Eh!?
As it breaks contact with the pedestal, the power cuts out. Lights all throughout the fortress shut down, shrouding every hallway and corridor in darkness.
The Kaiser, still on the floor, looks up from his funk.
Kaiser: The power...?
The other Chosen Children, making their way down the long way, stop running.
Takeru: Good job, Daisuke-kun!
The entire fortress comes to a halt. Still floating, but dead in the air.
In the dub:
Davis: Huh!? (Power shuts off) Emperor: The power source! T.K.: Way to go, Davis!
Solid.
With the power disabled, Daisuke is now alone with the mysterious and now floating object.
Daisuke: What is this thing!?
Suddenly, the object shines with a tremendous golden glow that fills the generator room. It also momentarily blinds Daisuke, judging by the pained scream he lets out.
Daisuke: DYAUGH!!! Chibimon: DAISUKE, LOOK!!!
A pink Crest-like symbol appears on the front of the black object. Not a Crest that any of the Chosen Children we know have ever possessed, however.
Energy from the glow fills Chibimon, restoring his stamina and bringing him back up to his V-mon form.
V-mon: Ah!? Daisuke: You evolved! But how!?
Then the object cranks up the brights and blinds them harder. The intensifying golden light melts away the metal generator room, exposing the boys to the central column chamber and flooding the column with light.
The black skin of the object also melts away, revealing a shimmering golden artifact that should look quite familiar to anyone who saw the movie last month.
Daisuke: That's... a golden Digimental....
The Digivice pulses once and we hear something like the sound of a Digivice powering up, but Daisuke hears something else.
Daisuke: I heard a voice just now.
Then the Digimental of Miracles descends into Daisuke's hands.
Daisuke: Is this my Digimental? ...V-mon, should we try it out? V-mon: Yeah! Daisuke: DIGIMENTAL UP!!!
A new Armor Digimon sort of is about to awaken!
An interesting note about that Crest that appears on the Digimental. Like all Digimentals, the Digimental of Miracles is branded with a Crest. Some sources call it the Crest of Miracles, but no actual character has ever been associated with such a Crest.
But the Crest that appears here is not that Crest. Whatever conjured the Digimental of Miracles to appear here is something else. Something we haven't seen before.
In the dub:
Davis: I got a weird feeling about this! (Object begins to shine) Davis: What's going on!? DemiVeemon: Davis, look at that! (Mystery Crest appears on the Digi-Egg; Veemon Digivolves) Veemon: Huh!? Davis: You Digivolved! How!? (Light intensifies and wipes out generator room, leaving Digi-Egg of Miracles behind) Davis: Veemon, look at that! I've never seen anything like it! Veemon: Me neither! Davis: Oh man, it looks like a golden Digi-Egg! (Digi-Egg descends into Davis's hands) Davis: I guess this means that it's mine. Veemon, think you can handle it? Veemon: YEAH!!! Mhm! Davis: GOLDEN ARMOR ENERGIZE!!!
In a moment of surprising serendipity, Digimon: The Movie also came out exactly one month prior to the American dub release of this episode.
The Japanese release of Hurricane Touchdown/Transcendent Evolution happened after episode 14, "Shurimon of the Wind". Digimon: The Movie, on the other hand, hit theaters after episode 10, "The Captive Digimon". Which was not very well timed as the movie features Raidramon, a form that Veemon would not acquire until episode 11, "Storm of Friendship".
So if you saw Digimon: The Movie as soon as it came out, you were probably confused by the plot point that Veemon has two separate Digivolutions.
But since the movie has already released, Dub Team's able to nail that synergy by using the unique "Golden Armor Energize" callout here too.
Though no mention of the mystery voice Daisuke heard is made.
Now, it's time to let the golden radiance shine. For the second very first time, V-MON ARMOR SHINKAAAAAA!!!
Foregoing a stock animation evolution sequence, V-mon instead goes for a referential shot reminiscent of how he evolved with the Digimental of Miracles in the movie.
The lack of a standardized stock evolution really drives home the idea that this is a special circumstance and not a cool new tool for our toolbelt. We do not get to keep the Digimental of Miracles. Miracles are fleeting gifts.
He does get a schnazzy Armor Evolution title though.
Magnamon: RADIANT MIRACLE, MAGNAMON!!!
Very radiant. Much radiance. A golden radiance, one might say? Hmm....
Staring up at the shimmering new Armor form, Wormmon is starstruck.
Daisuke: (stunned) H-He evolved.... Wormmon: AMAZING!!!
From the upper areas of the fortress, Takeru and the others look down on this impossible-to-miss brightness lighting up the otherwise blacked out structure.
Takeru: What is going on here?
The Kaiser also watches from another opening, though he has nothing to say.
Narrator: It was a miraculous evolution. As beautiful as the rising sun shining its light upon the world.
We leave off here on the anticipation of the showdown to come. Next time on Digimon Adventure: Magnamon vs. Chimeramon for the fate of the Digimon Kaiser's soul.
In the dub:
Veemon: VEEMON, GOLDEN ARMOR DIGIVOLVE TO.... Magnamon: MAGNAMON!!!
Magnamon gets no cool title, which is weird because even in the dub, Armor Digimon typically do.
Davis: Ah! Dude, that's amazing! Wormmon: How'd he do that? T.K.: This changes everything! Magnamon: The balance of power... has shifted. Narrator: Will Magnamon be able to defeat Kimeramon? Find out on the next Digimon: Digital Monsters!
We will, yes. That is in fact a thing we are going to find out next time.
Wormmon doesn't get to be elated like in the original and T.K. seems to understand what's going on better than Takeru does. Both versions end on a declaration of hope; The original's is a poetic metaphor from the narrator while the dub has Magnamon look into the camera and go "I'm fucking cool".
Assessment: Here we are in the penultimate episode of the Kaiser's finale and it is very much Daisuke's episode. In a similar way to how the assault on Vamdemon's castle felt like the moment where Taichi truly became the team's leader, this episode feels like that moment for Daisuke. He's demonstrated his courage and loyalty to the team before, but here is where he really earns their respect as someone worth following into battle.
While still highlighting what a different character from Taichi he is. Daisuke's bold and daring decision rises straight out of his strong sense of compassion and empathy for others. Daisuke is foolish and reckless as befits a Courage-bearer but it's because he'd rather go down swinging than let any more innocent people come to harm. Daisuke is heroic in a way that Taichi's myopia made it difficult for him to be.
And it's that unwillingness to do the smart thing, the tactical thing, and withdraw - the very thing the more cynical veterans Takeru and Hikari are advocating for - that unlocks a miraculous new hope. Daisuke chooses to believe in the impossible and he sees his faith rewarded.

Random AU idea, but AU everything is the same except Jun and Momoe are retired magical girls
#digimon adventure 02#lmao it would be so funny#also in this au: daisuke got kidnapped for having weirdo magic boy powers#but like imagine the digimon pulling up to the motomiya house and jun immediately gets to throwing hands#like she's debating transforming because weirdos are coming for her brother meanwhile the digimon are trying to deescalate the situation
