That time (> 10 years ago) I wrote TK and Matt’s grandpa as an eccentric Japanese expat who is madly in love with his wife and abandoned everything to move to France and learn her language and be with her… 🤣 😭

Since Romi Park is Korean-Japanese I like to headcanon that Ken and Sam are also Korean-Japanese through their mother.

Also TK and Matt are undoubtedly part French through their French grandpa... My current thoughts are; Michel Takaishi is half French, half Japanese. His daughter, Natsuko, is 3/4 French (w/ a full French mother) and was named after a relative of her father’s. So TK and Matt would be 3/8 French I guess?? Additional headcanon is that Natsuko’s mother nicknames her ‘Nancy’ lol

if Hiroaki Ishida counts, then maybe him. If he doesn’t, then maybe Michel [Takaishi]. They’re both cool normalish dudes who help out. in spirit of appreciating 02, I’ll pick Michel for this challenge!

Michel’s a pretty interesting guy. He’s energetic, passionate, and very patriotic to France, rides a motorbike with a sidecar, and just went up to BigMamemon who as the name suggests is big, and company. he’s a fun guy to watch!

also, he says that the place of versailles has been his playground since he was a kid -- what does that even mean?? and he says that in response to takeru exclaiming to him ‘grandpa, that’s trespassing!’ which is so funny 

also i think the implication is that Michel is a French man who married a Japanese woman (and then having Natsuko, who’d be half-French, half-Japanese) which is pretty interesting! seeing as Natsuko lives in Japan, I feel like Michel and his wife probably lived in Japan and then moved to France in their older years, or something. regardless, it would be interesting to learn more about how Michel and his wife met. 

i don’t know, Michel’s just an interesting and fun guy, so he’s probably be my best pick for a 02 minor character I’d watch a full series of.

Today I worked on my fic for Day 4 of Tai///shiro week instead of watching the football game, muahaha. Day 4 is the anniversary of OWG! ^_^

Here’s a sneak peak of the first two paragraphs under the cut. I might change things later, but I’m happy with how it’s coming along so far.

Happy ‘We Stopped a Nuclear Missile’ Day!!!

Koushiro drew a third explanation mark in chocolate frosting and smiled proudly at his handiwork. It was the first time he had baked a cake by himself. He had emailed his mother for recipe ideas, and she gave him several. The French opera cake recipe was by far the most complicated, but Koushiro still leapt at the opportunity. He remembered that Taichi kept talking about opera cakes for weeks after he visited France with Takeru in 2002. So this would surely impress him!

Koushiro had also accidentally set off the smoke alarm in the process of making his cake, which had caused their college dormitory to evacuate…but Taichi had been out all day and he didn’t have to know that detail. Anyway, what was a March 4 anniversary without a few hectic surprises? The important takeaway was that Koushiro had successfully made a layered sponge cake with coffee and ganache and chocolate, and he had somehow lived to tell the tale. And it actually tasted delicious, if he did say so himself. If not as good as Michel Takaishi’s cakes, at least more edible than Yuuko Yagami’s.

The first character I first fell in love with: Elecmon, I guess? I fell in love with his design before I even watched the series (I had bought the guide book). But once he appeared, DemiDevimon became number one, easy peasy. And let’s not forget *clenches heart* Mummymon & Archnemon.The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Nanomon! I felt bad for him the first time I watched the show, but somehow the sub version makes it worst? He had so much potential that I fill with sad headcanons… Also, MetalSeadramon and aaaah Kiwimon. And Pinocchimon. And why do I even care about Anomalocarimon.The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Takeru. He’s an interesting character but the way both the narrative and the fandom treats him annoys me.The character I love that everyone else hates: Daisuke, and I guess the rest of the 02 kids. Not everyone hates them, thank gosh, but I keep seeing posts giving them shit just for existing. Which is sad, because they’re as good as the previous gen of Chosen and I really miss them in tri.The character I used to love but don’t any longer: I don’t know… I like Elecmon a little less than back in the day but he still ranks pretty high, so that doesn’t count… If anything, I love more characters, but I haven’t stopped liking any of them.The character I would totally smooch: none.The character I’d want to be like: probably Miyako? She’s social, smart, enthusiast and many other things…The character I’d slap: MICHEL TAKAISHI. And one for Iori’s grandpa too.A pairing that I love: Leomon/Ogremon, who are pretty close to being canon. As for the humans, it’s a tie between Daiken and Miyako/Mimi.A pairing that I despise: I don’t really despise anything… But I admit I’m not too fond of Takari. In my opinion they’re best friends and nothing else, no matter how much fanservice one can point in tri.

You ever grab a digimon side character and be like "IM GOING TO TREAT YOU LIKE AN OC... NOW BECOME DEVELOPED"

Sometimes! I think I have built my own impression of Willis/Wallace from the many years I've spent thinking about him (for better or for worse), but he's a struggle to flesh out because he's so... intentionally enigmatic and different depending on which source material you're using, rotfl.

I do have some headcanons/ideas I've wanted to expand on for the sake of character development in fanfic regarding the following minor characters (but sadly have very little fanfic to show for it).

(This got kind of long, under the cut to spare your dash):

(The Fuji TV crew! Mainly the two on the right, Sakurada and Chioka--although Yuki and Hiroaki play a small role in the snippets about the other two I've written. Spoiler alert: these two guys get digimon partners in the end!)

(Maki and Daigo! I have been writing a fic that shows select moments of backstory/Tri from Maki's perspective, but its been stalled for a while. ERGH!)

(THIS L-corp scientist! How exactly did we get here, L-corp scientist?? You might actually be the most important living* adult in Appmon, you deserve a real name and a backstory and BOY do I have THOUGHTS on THAT!)**

* “living” meaning “not assumed to be dead” for a significant portion of the series.

But then again, I'm just as likely to take a minor character and give them something to do for the sake of continuing the development of a MAJOR character, or exaggerate their traits/take them to the next logical extreme for a quick laugh (i.e. dumb comics and sketches). This has resulted in:

Cody's grandpa Chikara and old!Gennai bonding over a shared love of prune juice;

Mr. Fujiyama being single and Actually Clueless when it comes to giving advice about romance and dating (and asking Nancy Takaishi on a date anyway, to TK's horror);

TK's grandpa Michel giving Tai advice on his love life;

Davis becoming CONVINCED that Jun is using some sort of black magic/love potion on Matt and Tai, because they have been spending Way Too Much Time Together for No Reason He Can See (hijinks sibling warfare ensues);

Izzy & Ms. Kamiya do more baking together (post Digimon Movie). Izzy is a bit thunderstruck by what she considers "following a recipe" (bizarre substitutions and food combinations that would make 1950’s-era instant food corporations proud), but they have fun and eventually make something edible (to Tai's relief). Now that I think about it, she and Mimi would really hit it off!

(Writing this, I realized I have a lot of ideas about the American English dub versions of the minor characters, particularly the adults, because they are so cartoony/embellished themselves! One of the great things about the dub IMO is it gave them a lot of personality and character traits, which are ultimately a good match for my sense of humor. Also I am Old and like to see the adults do things and go on their own adventures, lol).

I don't believe that any of my interpretations or the situations I would be likely to put these characters in are particularly original or unique to the point of seeming like OCs to me (mmmmmaybe L-corp scientist a little, because there's almost nothing about her in canon and fan mentions tend to be very brief/divided, but I have Many Thoughts about how, exactly, we got there). Ultimately, I tend to be of the opinion that characters exist for the purpose of telling stories, and therefore I end up only developing headcanons or engaging in minor-character character development when it seems appropriate for whatever story I'm trying to tell (which makes individual characters somewhat subject to change from story to story, although I strive for SOME consistency between individual works because I'm particular about that sometimes!). But I DO really enjoy seeing other people's headcanons and stories, particularly since we don't have a lot of in-universe information about these minor characters. Having that much room for interpretation is really fun!

(Jyou/Bike Girl is still one of my favorite minor character ships, even though we as a fandom know NOTHING about her :))
