There Are Birds Here by Jamaal May

For Detroit

There are birds here, so many birds here is what I was trying to say when they said those birds were metaphors for what is trapped between buildings and buildings. No. The birds are here to root around for bread the girl’s hands tear and toss like confetti. No, I don’t mean the bread is torn like cotton, I said confetti, and no not the confetti a tank can make of a building. I mean the confetti a boy can’t stop smiling about and no his smile isn’t much like a skeleton at all. And no his neighborhood is not like a war zone. I am trying to say his neighborhood is as tattered and feathered as anything else, as shadow pierced by sun and light parted by shadow-dance as anything else, but they won’t stop saying how lovely the ruins, how ruined the lovely children must be in that birdless city.

The air is fresh this morning— and I am walking fast.

Hey listen! My bones are happy inside my skin; my fingers

are snapping so I add a step or two—a skip

step, step, and step aside. I can almost forget

that I have what I have, but I never do. I notice

the wind shaking hands with the branches; the sky

threading blue through my eyes. This is how I’d like

you to remember me: from the inside out; back when

my heart was folded so neatly under my ribs.

Aula 8 - Técnicas e Projetos de Animação ( Claudia Bolshaw & equipe do N.A.D.A)

Finalmente chegou a palestra mais esperada por mim. Por já ter ido em um workshop do NADA e entrado no Clube de Animação da Puc, além de ser extremamente apaixonada pela técnica, já estava ciente do mundo e tópicos que entraríamos, o que não me impediu de ficar maravilhada com tudo e descobrir coisas novas. Bom, primeiramente a coordenadora Cláudia Bolshaw não pode comparecer deixando seus alunos e membros do grupo assumirem a aula, não perdendo nem um pouco a seriedade da palestra. Não me lembro exatamente dos nomes dos que foram apresentar para a gente, mas todos faziam parte do N.A.D.A ( Núcleo de Artes Digitais e Animação), grupo criado em 2004. Mostraram o curta mais recente dirigido pela Julia Nicolescu, veterana, mas com a participação de vários outros alunos no processo de criação e construção; o curta se chama LA LOBA, " Explora o tema do empoderamento feminino a partir de uma história do livro “As Mulheres Que Correm Com Lobos“, de Clarissa Pinkola. Dirigido, produzido e animado majoritariamente por mulheres, é também nossa contribuição criativa para uma maior representatividade feminina na indústria. " O filme vai passar no maior festival de animação da América Latina, o AnimaMundi, que vai estar no Rio de Janeiro, do dia 24 a 29 de Julho, e em São Paulo, do dia 1 a 5 de Agosto.

Animação significa ato ou efeito de animar, dar vida, infundir ânimo, valor, energia, tem origem na palavra latina "anima" que significa princípio vital da vida. 

 No livro Illusion of Life, dos principais animadores da Disney na época, Frank Thomas e Ollie Johnston, criaram os 12 princípios da animação usados até hoje. São eles:

1 – Squash and Stretch (Esmagar e esticar)

2 – Anticipation (Antecipação)

3 – Staging (Atuação)

4 – Straight Ahead & Pose to Pose (Direto em frente e pose a pose)

5 – Follow Through & Overlapping (Seguir em frente e sobrepor)

6 – Slow in & slow out (Acelerar e Desacelerar)

7 - Arc (Arco)

8 – Secondary Action (Ação Secundária)

9 -Timing (Tempo)

10 - Exaggeration (Exagero)

11 – Solid Drawing (Desenho Sólido)

12 – Appeal (Apelo)

A parte que prendeu a atenção de todo mundo foi quando eles falaram das técnicas de animação. Admito que não conhecia todas e uma é mais encantadora que a outra:

Tradicional - animação por keyframe, você desenha os movimentos. Tanto que a própria Disney costumava "reciclar" coreografias e cenas em diversos filmes, para aproveitar os frames já feitos, já que era um processo bem trabalhoso.

Stop Motion - é uma técnica que utiliza sequências de fotografias diferentes de um mesmo objeto inanimado para simular o seu movimento. 

Recorte - é uma técnica específica de animação que utiliza personagens, objetos e cenários recortados de materiais como papel, cartão, tecido ou mesmo fotografias.

Vetorial - usa um sistema de vetores, o rigging, que é uma técnica de animação em 3D que adiciona movimento a um personagem simulando articulações própria de sua natureza estrutural (esqueleto) e linguagem corporal. Nota-se que o fundo (ambiente) fica estático, só os personagens se movimentam.

3D - bom, é animar nas três dimensões, se equiparando cada vez mais com a realidade. Hoje em dia temos técnicas muito avançadas de animação 3D, mas o processo de criação de um filme assim é tão grande e complexo que cada área de trabalho é muito separada, ou seja, alguém, muito, raramente, vai participar de mais de uma etapa de produção. Tem especialistas para cada área, como texturização de pedras ou pelos corporais.

Vidro - é animação com materiais em cima do vidro. Eles podem ser: carvão, areia, tinta... Funciona mais ou menos como o Stop Motion.

Pixelation - baseia- se na manipulação de fotos para criar efeitos surreais e de continuidade.

Rotoscopia - animar em cima de filmagens. Como o inovador filme sobre Vincent Van Gogh, feito somente com pinturas á óleo: Love, Vincent.

Ah o mundo da animação... Os membros do N.A.D.A então, falaram sobre o processo da realização de um projeto; falaram do storyboard e roteiro, que vale ressaltar, são coisas diferentes, dos planos de filmagem, dos concepts, model sheet, sonorização ( que vi um lado que nunca tinha visto, de como a parte do AUDIOvisual é essencial á uma obra) e testes.

O primeiro longa de animação brasileiro, Sinfonia Amazônica,  foi feito inteiramente por Anélio Latini Filho, e lançado em 1954, que dedicou cerca de cinco anos de trabalho para transformar em desenho animado um pot-pourri de relatos folclóricos da região Norte, entre elas a lenda da Noite, que aborda o surgimento dos animais na floresta e a do Urutau, que narra a formação do rio Amazonas.

O Brasil esta sendo homenageado este ano (2018) pelo maior festival de animação do mundo: Festival d'Annecy. "Nos últimos anos, o Brasil vem ganhando maior destaque no festival. Em 2013 e 2014 animações brasileiras receberam o maior prêmio do festival para longas-metragens, o Cristal. A primeira produção brasileira premiada foi Uma História de Amor e Fúria (2013), de Luiz Bolognesi, e consecutivamente O Menino e o Mundo (2014), de Alê Abreu."- trecho retirado do  site: www.assistebrasil.com.br sobre o festival.

Gostaria também de divulgar o projeto Motionpoems ( motionpoems.org) que fornece subsídeos para animadores transformarem poemas selecionados em obras de animação.

On Lockdown

a week was a month and a month was cosmic. We aged like dogs age, I hoped, exponentially wiser. I missed the neons. But George Floyd ’s 8:46 stoked something older—on an order more systemic— that broke the fever of the pandemic and brought to light a darker and lonelier disease. We are more vulnerable by far than is realized by even our least sung, furthest flung, and most compromised. Every second now is eons.
