I know Ridley’s considered Samus’ arch-nemesis and all, but I think we need to appreciate Mother Brain more. Because Ridley’s status as Samus’ personal enemy wasn’t established until the Zero Mission manga; By contrast, Mother Brain has always consistently been the leader of the Space Pirates, the ultimate enemy for Samus to defeat. She’s the one who mutated and killed the Infant Metroid, after all.

Indeed, the same manga that made Ridley so quintessential to Samus’ backstory also made Mother Brain a much more personal enemy to her*, as someone who helped raise Samus on Zebes but then betrayed her second family and got Gray Voice killed, deprived Samus of her new home, etc. She brought about a second K-2L for Samus. And the manga even goes more into Mother Brain’s motives and resentment towards Samus too, her attempts to control her…

I’m just saying; We should emphasize Mother Brain as a big psychological antagonist for Samus too. Make her the Glados to Samus’ Chell, except instead of toxic yuri she’s an overbearing, haunting mother who micromanages and judges every aspect of Samus’ life, forcibly adopted her, and works to undermine every decision Samus makes for herself. She’s even got those little mobile pods to talk to Samus with. More Evil Women content, is what I’m saying; We only have Dark Samus after that, with the Queen Metroid and SA-X too brief and animalistic to explore.

(*Meanwhile, Kraid is left behind as the only member of the OG Space Pirate trio who isn’t retconned as a major formative villain in Samus’ life. Even Other M, reviled as it is, acknowledges how much Ridley and Mother Brain haunt Samus. But Kraid is forgotten, and when finally remembered in Dread is a loser who can’t compete with Samus’ other nemeses…)
