Had a lot of fun with this one. I'm particularly proud of Newman, and he was the fastest one to caricaturize. Only took about ten minutes.
Elaine took forever.

I’m pretty sure at least half of my preferred tv shows would have ended sooner and better for everyone if someone just dragged the main characters/‘s ass/es to a proper therapist as soon as they showed their first wave of red flags.

Kramer and Newman compete to win the Nathan’s hotdog eating contest. George’s father wants a “destination funeral.” The guy at the security desk only tells Elaine she “looks nice today” when her hair is straightened. Jerry gets banned from Uber.
Frank would leave George explicit instructions to schedule his funeral for a day that would inconvenience Morty Seinfeld as much as humanly possible. It'd be his final act of petty revenge.

How would I write different types of humor? Like cynical, snarky, sassy, etc.
Like, my male character has a cynical sense of humor but I'm not too sure how to write it. Please help, and thank you!
Writing Different Types of Humor
Your best bet is to research these specific types of humor, or at least the ones you want to use in your story, to learn what that type of humor is and how it differs from other types of humor. For example, cynical humor is humor that is bitter, sneeringly distrustful, contemptuous, and pessimistic. You can also read about the underlying mindset--cynicism, sarcasm, snark, for example--to learn more about when and why people are like that. So, cynicism is typically used as a defense mechanism because it deflects criticism, avoids vulnerability, and can be a bit of a power move. So, someone engaging in cynical humor is likely doing it for those reasons.
As far as actually portraying the humor--knowing exactly what the character should say and when--you'll want to seek out TV shows and movies with characters known for that type of humor. For example, a search for "cynical movie characters" lists Melvin Udall from As Good As It Gets, Tyler Durden from Fight Club, and Llewyn Davis from Inside Llewyn Davis as examples. A search for "cynical TV comedies" suggests It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, and Rick and Morty. So, spending some time watching a variety of shows and movies with cynical characters and cynical humor is a great way to learn what qualifies, get specific examples, and learn the nuance and timing.
Have fun with your research!

The Pitiful Power of Jerry Smiths.
Why the Self-Made Victim Is More Dangerous Than You Think.
Tumblr media
We've all encountered them: the people who carry their misfortune around like a badge, somehow always down on their luck, yet always seeming to receive a healthy dose of sympathy. They’re the Jerry Smiths of the world—the ones who’d rather blame the universe than change their habits, finding comfort in the pity of others.
Meet the "Jerry Smiths" of the World
Take Jerry Smith from Rick and Morty, for example. Here’s a guy who’s mastered the art of being pitiful. He clings to self-deprecation like it’s a lifeboat, avoiding responsibility with the confidence of someone who knows they’ll be bailed out. And somehow, it works. People feel just sorry enough for Jerry to keep him afloat. But Jerry’s type isn’t confined to the cartoon world.
Pop culture loves these characters. Look at Milhouse from The Simpsons, forever the hapless friend, or George Costanza in Seinfeld, always dramatizing his victimhood to manipulate people. It’s easy to laugh, but these personalities highlight a deeper truth: playing the victim can be a surprisingly powerful tactic.
The Self-Made Victim: Weak or Subtly Dangerous?
It might seem like the Jerry Smiths of the world are harmless. They’re not angry, not outwardly villainous—they’re just... unfortunate. But that’s the thing. Behind that constant “woe is me” facade lies a subtle form of manipulation. Psychologists call this “learned helplessness,” where someone consciously (or unconsciously) begins leaning into their own weaknesses because it’s easier than facing their issues.
When people stay in this victim mindset, they find ways to siphon attention, energy, and sometimes resources from others. They learn that pity can be a powerful currency. Historian Robert Caro once noted how certain politicians—cough Nero—leaned into victimhood to manipulate public sentiment. Blaming the Christians for the Great Fire of Rome, Nero sidestepped accountability and weaponized the public’s pity. Ancient or modern, this is a character tactic that works.
Victim-Minded People in Fiction
It’s no wonder fiction is full of these personalities—they’re based on the kinds of people we meet in real life. Jerry and Milhouse might be funny, but they reveal how quickly pity can turn into power when wielded by the right person.
Consider Tom Smykowski in Office Space. He’s constantly complaining about the unfairness of his work situation. Eventually, he gets sympathy (and a hefty settlement), proving that pity has its perks. Or take George Costanza, who turns his insecurities into manipulative ploys, often to hilarious but subtly unsettling effect.
This pattern teaches us something important: the self-made victim might appear powerless, but they’re capable of reshaping the world around them in their favor—if only through the sympathetic hearts of others.
The Cost of Carrying a Victim-Minded Friend
Here’s the problem: victim-minded people are exhausting. They’re like emotional sponges, draining energy from those around them without ever contributing to solutions. If you’ve ever felt worn out after interacting with someone who constantly plays the victim, you’re not alone. Self-help authors like Brene Brown have noted that constant pity can be a form of “compassion fatigue”—we simply have a limit to how much we can give.
Historically, even emperors and kings complained of these “energy vampires.” Consider Caligula, who was famously manipulative and often evoked pity as a form of control. This behavior might not come with grand Roman stakes in our own lives, but the emotional toll is real.
The Risks of Attracting Victim-Minded People
It’s surprisingly easy to end up with these people in our social circles, especially if you’re empathetic. Victim-minded people are drawn to compassionate types—they know a soft heart when they see one. And while it’s natural to want to help, it’s important to recognize when helping turns into enabling.
Victim-minded people often excel at storytelling, turning their lives into a series of unfortunate events where they’re always the wronged party. They shift from “I can’t believe this happened to me” to “Isn’t it just like me to have bad luck?” and, somehow, we buy it. Pity becomes a form of currency, and we’re left footing the bill.
So, How Do You Shield Yourself?
Here’s the truth: you can be compassionate without being a doormat...
Firstly, spot the patterns: The easiest way to recognize a victim-minded person is to look for consistency. Do they always have a new misfortune to share? Do they ever take accountability for the situation, or is it always someone else’s fault?
Secondly, set boundaries: Self-made victims often push for more time and emotional investment than they deserve. It’s okay to say “I’m sorry you’re going through this,” without following it up with hours of free therapy.
There's more, encourage empowerment, Not Pity: If you feel comfortable, gently encourage them to think of solutions rather than problems. If they start talking about what happened to them, ask them what they’re planning to do next. Victim-minded people don’t want to solve things, but shifting the conversation to solutions can give them a moment of pause.
Lastly, know when to walk away: Some people simply don’t want help—they want attention. And it’s okay to walk away if someone isn’t interested in changing or moving forward. You’re not obligated to carry someone else’s emotional load indefinitely.
Sympathy vs. Pity
Pity, when weaponized, can be as toxic as any manipulation tactic. Recognizing this doesn’t mean you lack compassion; it means you’re protecting your emotional health. You have the right to invest your time and energy in people who uplift and inspire, not those who drain you dry.
So the next time you encounter a Jerry Smith in your life, remember:
sometimes the best way to help is simply to let them stand on their own. Pity is a powerful tool—but so is self-preservation.

tldr: this is my main blog so there's all kinds of crap here. mostly rick and morty and some other hyperfixations. i don't get to pick what the autism latches onto, luv.
original posts are tagged #my nonsense and art is @space-enbies-inc. when i rb posts i tag the shows/games and characters involved. i don't trigger tag anything at the moment, but feel free to ask if you want something tagged. general blanket content warning (and some other shit) under the cut.
last updated july 2024
content warning: nothing extreme enough to piss off tumblr, but there is very suggestive art and general "horny about that old man" vibes. uncensored slurs (usually ones about lgbt+ people), discussions or depictions of homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, ableism, racism, classism, sexism, and probably some other bigotries tbh. canon typical content (like gore, death, incest jokes because rnm cannot help themselves). loads loads loads of mental health things, suicide, self harm, smoking/drinking/drug use and addiction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, body dysmorphia, ocd, adhd, autism, overstimulation, meltdowns, dissociation, gender dysphoria, and maybe some other stuff that's not coming to mind? idk for sure.
basically if it happens in rick and morty, bojack horseman, or disco elysium, it can show up on this blog.
i do not ship rick and morty together but a lot of ship art just looks like regular fanart if you don't know any better so it's possible that ive reblogged r1ck0rty before without realizing, apologies if that's the case.
i do ship jerrick and rickcest and like to reblog that kind of stuff. i don't consider those ships to be incestuous but i know that some people do so i figured id give you a heads up.

please dont be an asshole or a hater on my blog especially racists and anti-lgbtq, please fuck off
[also under 16 tread lightly / mostly dni cuz i talk about wild shit sometimes. plus my fave shows are rated tv-14]
this is my "stuff" blog. just everything i like that i also want to keep aside from my other more focused blogs.
i'm 18. i use she/her pronouns. i am bisexual. i have a masc nb partner of 5 years who is the light of my life. i am mixed white and ojibwe/odawa. i live in the very top of the pnw and love that fresh air. i am autistic and suffer from agoraphobia.
please follow me if u don't meet any of the prior criteria and are into this stuff :

[i do not partake in discourse about any media, my favorite shows can regularly make fun of marginalized groups or concepts and while i understand how harmful it can be and that it will make people uncomfortable - i am also part of some of those marginalized groups and i can still find the humor and/or ignorance within it. i see no reason to police the things that other people watch on tv]
[i take adult animation very seriously, i am deeply attached to american dad (and king of the hill/ family guy but to lesser degrees) and have been since childhood. it is my main special interest. i rewatch episodes literally every day of my life and have for about 4 years. i am in the process of writing my own fan episodes. my favorite characters are haley and roger, but i love the whole smith family.]
my little pony g4, adventure time, amazing world of gumball, craig of the creek, total drama, teen titans and teen titans go, chowder, regular show, victorious, icarly, the garfield show, most pokémon shows

(akon, eminem, britney spears, rihanna, etc). i also used to be really really into vocaloid, i am still but much less so. my music taste is kinda all over the place honestly but i like what i like
i am interested in spirituality, specifically law of attraction and manifestation. i also am kinda starting to get back into ritual "witchcraft" worship of Dionysus but im trying to get as close to original/proper sources as possible before officially starting
i am also super into art specifically abstract and surrealism / dreamlike paintings, i use both dark harsh colors and softer pastel colors depending on what i'm trying to convey. i am planning a large project for april or may this year
[if i use improper terminology when talking about my interests pls be kind i am incredibly socially awkward and really don't get the chance to interact with fellow interest community members so i may not be up to date on everything. i am always looking for more friends! thank u for reading this far :) ]
