Produce at Mercado do Bolhão, Porto
Also sold at this market...and lots of places actually is this... thing, I don't know how to call it in any language, that they make here where they put a walnut inside a dried fruit like a date or a fig. I think the acid of the walnut does something to the fruit and it is just... simply the best candy (and it is candy) that you will ever eat

Now we get to see how california, america, deals with severe weather condition that is significantly different from the seasonal climate.
I predict that it’ll be mostly under control and some flash flooding will still take place in place like Morongo, yucca valley or even Palm Springs but not to the point of submerging towns.
Yucca valley is high desert and so the water will just run off to Morongo. Palm Springs might be more likely to have road flash flood obstructing traffic

Dinky the Dinosaur, Boone's sniper-nest in Fallout: New Vegas, was based on Mr. Rex, one of the Cabazon Dinosaurs in southern California.
(Mr. Rex seen here with Paul Reuben memorial paint job, October 2023)
Tumblr media
The Dinosaurs are located off the 10 freeway, between the city of Palm Springs and Morongo Casino and Resort. Mr. Rex is part of a museum with an...interesting history, but this post will focus on Mr. Rex's anatomy.
The entrance to the belly of the beast is located behind his left thigh.
Tumblr media
Immediately upon entering, a small landing and staircase lead upwards (first landing and entrance pictured from second landing)
Tumblr media
The second landing is big enough for one or two groups to wait for their turn to climb to the head.
Tumblr media
The third landing is very small, too small to get a proper picture of, and leads immediately to a spiral staircase.
Tumblr media
The spiral staircase is aged and precarious, with each step being only a few inches wide. At the fourth landing is a trap door to seal the dino in case of inclement weather.
Tumblr media
The fourth landing is the head of Mr. Rex. It's a small, contoured area just big enough for two adults to stand.
Tumblr media
The view out of the mouth is limited, but really is a very sheltered sniping spot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Admission to the museum, which includes Mr. Rex, is $15 for adults. Admission to Dinny the brontosaurus is free. She contains a gift shop.

87 sentences coming right up!
---
But Buck thinks he has been trucking on, lately. Going with the motions. Living because he has to. And he’s not sure that’s been enough.
“I don’t know, man.” Buck sighs. “Maybe we both need a different strategy.”
Eddie looks at him and scrunches his mouth to the side. “Like what?”
“I don’t know yet,” Buck mutters. “But I hate feeling like this.”
Eddie takes another sip of beer.
“Me too.”
Buck wonders if maybe he doesn’t understand the whole of what’s going on with Eddie at all.
viii.
A few days later, on a Saturday Buck has off from work, Eddie shows up at Buck’s bright and early. Buck is still curled up in bed with Cranberry when the buzzer goes off, but thankfully, one of the reasons he chose the building was the app feature to answer the door. In case he was ever immobile, like right fucking now, all warm and cozy with his dog’s snoring head on his chest.
A minute after buzzing him in, Eddie opens the bedroom door - without even knocking - and pokes his head inside.
Cranberry hops off Buck’s bed and runs across the room to greet him, tail going a mile a minute.
“What the hell?” Buck yawns, sitting up.
“I need you today. Emergency. You weren’t answering your phone.”
“Yeah, because it’s like six in the morning!” Buck defends.
“It’s half past eight.” Eddie corrects. “I have a shift soon. Carla is in Morongo. I forgot to schedule with my aunt.”
“Wait, so…”
“So, can you and Cranberry handle Christopher for a day?”
Buck blinks. “Uh, yeah. Yes. Sure we can.”
“Great, thanks! You’re a lifesaver. Could you take him out? He’s dying to see the dog in action. Do something fun, you know?”
Buck feels too slow to catch up.
“S-sure.”
“I’ll pay. Just, you know, have a good day.”
Eddie kind of rips through Buck’s morning like a tornado. He leaves him with instructions and activities and a bunch of snarky jokes while Buck changes, attaches his leg, and takes the dog out to pee.
“Can I feed her? Please, can I feed her?” Chris begs.
“Sure,” Buck says again. Because, really, he’s just along for the ride this morning, apparently.
When Eddie leaves, Buck is left alone with an eight year-old and a golden retriever and no fucking clue what to do.
“So, what do you do for fun?” He asks Chris.
Christopher shrugs. “I like rides. I like games. I like animals. I like pancakes. I like candy.”
“Oh, I see,” Buck smiles. “Candy, huh?”
“My favorite!”
Buck thinks. What things can they do involving those variables that are accessible to a kid on crutches, a man with a prosthetic leg, and a dog.
“Do you like arcades, Chris?” Buck asks.
“Yes!” Chris proclaims. “But I haven’t gone to one in so long.”
Perfect!
“Well, what do you say to a pancake house for breakfast, and an arcade after?”
Cranberry can do all that. She can sit under the table at breakfast. And arcades are dark. She won’t stick out too much. Buck can slowly get used to doing outings beyond work, training, and the station with her. This might work out great, come to think of it.
“Alright, kiddo,” Buck says. “Then before we go, let’s have a quick chat about the rules for talking to Cranberry while she’s working okay?”
“Okay!” Chris agrees. “But Dad already told me."

Photo of my hand holding a baby desert tortoise at the Desert Tortoise Research Center at the Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Base in Twenty-Nine Palms, California:
Tumblr media
Excerpt from this story from the LA Times:
A 3.5-million-acre swath of Mojave Desert between Ridgecrest and the Morongo Basin has received a new federal designation that advocates hope will help protect vulnerable wildlife like the Mojave desert tortoise.
The area has been named a sentinel landscape, a federally led effort to promote sustainable land-use practices near military installations.
“It’s built on partnerships,” said Phil Murray, encroachment manager for the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, one of five installations that surrounds the newly designated land. “A lot of the conservation work that’s done around the Morongo Basin or Mojave Desert is coordinated through different federal agencies, NGOs and private partners.”
The goal is to encourage a more collaborative approach, and to streamline federal assistance to the various agencies, groups and people involved, he said.
The designation doesn’t change who owns or manages the land and does not come with dedicated funding, aside from money for an implementation plan and a coordinator, Murray said. But sentinel landscapes are prioritized for funding through certain grants, he said.
The coalition is expected to support conservation efforts such as erecting desert tortoise fencing to reduce vehicle strikes, creating wildlife crossings, propagating seeds and rehabilitating habitat, including areas that have burned in wildfires, Murray said.
The Mojave Desert Land Trust expects to do much work on the ground, including helping with seed collection and outreach, said Cody Hanford, deputy executive director and chief conservation officer of the nonprofit dedicated to protecting the California desert.
“It will elevate our projects, elevate our goals, which I think in the end will help them become more accomplishable,” he said.
Other partners include various federal and state agencies, conservation groups and San Bernardino County.
The expanse of desert that received the designation is ringed by the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, National Training Center Fort Irwin, Edwards Air Force Base, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow.
It’s also the heart of desert tortoise habitat in California, said Ken MacDonald, board member at-large and former president of the Desert Tortoise Council conservation group, a partner in the new effort.
“There’s recreational interests, tribal interests, local community interests,” he said. “So coming together as a partnership, we thought, would make the coalition and the cooperation more effective than everybody chipping away and working independently in their own backyard.”
“And so really, it’s to manage the whole 3 million acres cooperatively and collaboratively and be more effective in conserving and recovering the desert tortoises, and that’s pretty much it,” he said. “Just team up and take care of these critters.”
The stretch of desert includes at least 40 other protected species, including the Western Joshua tree, which California has protected with a conservation plan, and the Mohave ground squirrel, which the state lists as threatened.
But perhaps none is as imperiled as the desert tortoise, which California recently listed as endangered.
The species is facing pressure from a number of fronts, MacDonald said. The slow-moving reptiles are vulnerable to being hit by cars. Development has carved up previously wide-open stretches of desert into parcels that are in some cases too small to allow for the breeding and genetic diversity needed to sustain their population health. Drought conditions meant the wildflowers they like to eat never grew some years, and invasive species outcompeted them in other years.
