So I've been kinda musing on the idea of a helmetless Gabriel design because. well. idk, I keep seeing them. And while some of them are really cool, I just don't personally vibe with the concept as a whole, I guess? Keep his hat on. That's his face. Either that or it's a featureless ball of light under there or something. you freaks can take off his underwear but do NOT take off the helmet

There's always something a little off about it to me. Like either he's Just A Guy which is technically more biblically accurate but also kinda boring, or he's some kind of cool """biblically accurate angel""" deal that isn't actually biblically accurate even though it looks cooler.

I ended up settling on a concept that's kind of the best of both worlds to me. It makes a sort of sense for Gabe to have a human face under there, since he's meant to be a messenger to humanity, but I'm thinking, rather than having A Face, he kind of just... appears to individuals as their stereotypical idea of an angel, with either a face that the individual would find trustworthy or stern or outright terrifying depending on what message he's trying to send; different for every observer but always beautiful, flawless.

So to humans, he'd generally appear as something resembling common artistic depictions of him. No set features, but with some consistent elements: young, conventionally attractive & 'perfect'; somewhat androgynous; and with glowing eyes.

On the other hand, V1 doesn't really have anything internal to draw on. It doesn't pay attention to faces. It has no beauty standards. It doesn't trust or hate. It has a completely different thought process, brain structure. So instead, it sees something it can't quite comprehend, because it wasn't meant to comprehend it. A shifting form of faces and wings and light superimposed on each other, closer to the truth than any human but unable to make sense of it.

You know how if AI tries to animate something (or really do anything), it can kind of trail off and lose track of what it's doing and get increasingly nonsensical? It's dumb, but the best example I can think of for how I'd imagine V1 would see Gabriel would be AI Minecraft. The way that a white pixel can become a sheep can become snow can become clouds, and looking up at the sky and then back down will completely change the entire landscape. All its processing power going to solidify some kind of humanoid face in what it's seeing, confirmation bias building up a stronger and stronger image, only for it to tilt its head slightly and the entire illusion shatters.

i’m really interested in the etymologies of the names of the LiB but i haven’t been able to find out much about them 🥲

here’s what i can work out (feel free to correct me or help me out in the comments/reblogs if there’s something i’m wrong about/ am missing):

-Bliklotep sounds like it’s inspired from Ancient Egyptian naming conventions, with the ‘-otep’ suffix being similar to the ‘-hotep’ suffix commonly used in the names of pharos

-T’noy Karaxis sounds like it might have some greek influence? i ran ‘tnoy karaxis’ through google translate and it was detected as greek, with ‘karaxis’ apparently meaning ‘engraving’ but it detected ‘tnoy’ as russian but didn’t translate it (EDIT: @miserablesquama in the reblogs verified that as usual, google translate cannot be trusted. neither ‘tnoy’ or ‘t’noy’ are russian at all so it’s more likely of greek origin) -_-

-Pokotho sounds kind of latin-esque, with the name ‘otho’ apparently being roman in origin, although another source said it is of germanic origin so idk…? i ran ‘pokotho’ through google translate as well and got ‘pocket’ in southern sotho, but ‘poko’ returned ‘not yet’ in haitian creole. if i had to bet on any, i’d say his name can probably be assigned to western europe with the latin influences

-Nibblenephim is probably quite obviously influenced by the naming conventions of the ‘biblically accurate’ angels (cherubim, seraphim, ophanim etc) probably grounding his name’s inspirations in the middle east

-I have no clue what is going on with Wiggog Y’Rath tbh help lol EDIT: @gavotte-paradisio and @fangirlynjunk (thank u sm) both pointed out in the reblogs that it is likely a reference to the naming conventions common for hp lovecraft’s eldrich horrors which wiggly is a clear reference to. This puts wiggly’s name’s inspiration/origin in the USA (made in americaaaaaaa)

i definitely have to rewatch but i find myself reallyyyyy leaning towards like, trying to take inspiration from the art direction of pmmm, especially the witches landscapes for season 5 eyepocalypse things. I think a big part of the horror is just the contrast between the two visual styles of like the real world and horror landscapes, the simplicity and flatness vs the weird, distorting and horrific collaging style of the witches landscapes. so to really emulate that I would have to either reapproach the way i depict the beholding or.. find a way to make it work.. idk I haven’t thought /that/ far ahead

Like, I think the most conventional approach to monster Jonah is to do a biblically accurate Angel thing and just cover him in eyes. which for sure gets into like primal desires and the body horror territory… but I want to try to push it in a way that’s a little less conventional.

I think there is definitely more room to go a little maximalist haywire with his design for it but..mmm I have always had a little something against going overboard in Elias’s normal design u know even though fandom interpretations tend to lend themselves to yay maximalism bc it’s fun. I think it leads me to the question of like, do I want this to be a notable, horrific twist on who he was or just suggest that it’s an extension of himself or a deeper more sincere version of him. I’m definitely just overthinking this and can foreshadow stuff in his regular design anyways.. wah… whatever I’ll figure it out

(Mentioned in previous post but i love this hc so much) If he doesnt want you to leave, you wont. Its not a discussion. Hes already heavy in his cat form, that when he turns into more human - he weighs like a truck. Truck thats lying on your lap and forcing your hand to return to his head.

And if he does want to be alone, he just dissapears. You wont find him even if you try to find him. Probably left through some tear in reality he himself created.

Bath time is the worst. Before he shows his human form, he could just meow next to the bathtub/shower in peace, annoy the shit out of you,(see you naked), and push the shampoos and soaps inside and to under the water. After finding out he can turn human, hes left outside the bathtub and he screams even louder. You leave him for an hour without watching him and now bunch of your plants are uprooted and your couch is ruined.

Hes a freak and keeps pushing that "his animal form influences his mind too you know" just so he can stay a freak. If you encounter any other thing like him they will tell you that hes not normal and now you need accept that youre living with not just "a kyobei that doesnt act human bc he isnt human" but with actual "kyobei weirdo whos weirdo even for his own kind".

second, he is a victim. a victim who was groomed into following ena’s dreams and who was forced to make those dreams a reality. however that does NOT excuse the fact that he still committed some crimes and such etc etc. he is manipulative bc that is the only way he knows, that is what gopher wood taught him. the manipulated becomes the manipulator sort of scenario but from what i’ve read between the lines, he knows that. he understands that. he knows what he is doing won’t prevail and that it is inherently wrong and doesn’t sit correct with his own real character AKA dominicus. but will he ever break free from the cycle of manipulation? no. at least, from what we know so far

sunday is in too deep into this small cult for ena and their dreams, he won’t be able to break himself out even if he tried. he is pathetic. not in “owewh he pathetic wet cat🥺” type but in “oh he is pathetic🙁” type. he knows he is a victim, he knows that the path he follows will probably never become a reality but he is too scared to break the cycle. he is too afraid to step out of what has been taught to him thru his whole life. he wants to, but he can’t bc he is too used to the fake comfort of manipulation and what ena’s dreams promise him. at least his sister got herself out of this vicious cycle… at least robin is safe. and that makes him glad

third, i don’t like him. i love his character and his writing, don’t get me wrong. but u got me lost and triggered my encounter with a lunatic cultists with the confessional scene no joke that shit scared me that i had to log off of har for the rest of the day and manipulative characters aint my thing. but overall, love sunday and his writing. but i love dominicus more. that scared lonely boy who has no other choice but to follow the teachings of mr.gopher wood and ena and is told to blindly put his trust in them. as mitski’s lines in “last words of a shooting star” goes:

HI HI HI!!! (Also missed seeing u in my notifications!!!!!! How are u I missed u etc!!!!!)

Rori is actually an Angel now! In the original cupid au story (hence the name) it was a cupid and grim reaper because at the time I thought an Angel and devil was too overdone- but after further contemplation I no longer feel that way! I think making it an Angel and a demon is a little more straightforward to understand- and while it’s a little less unique it really made me bond with both characters more equally as an creator which I think was really important. But also! Rori has the extra eyes because in this universe angels can look both like beautiful normal people with wings AND flaming wheels covered in eyes. So Rori’s Dad is a “Biblically accurate” Angel and her Mom is a normal human with wings Angel! So Rori got a few extra eyes and wings out of that situation.(I also have a gag where Rori has a LOT of siblings and they all look completely different from each other cause they took different traits from each parent)

The story is extremely similar in the broad strokes aside from changes made to individual characters to make them more unique and interesting! So for example Jade(our Virgil stand in) is now themed around old-timey mobster aesthetics and very notably talks like one- which leads to a lot of pet-name shenanigans!(if u send a second ask about all the differences I will explain everything in more detail) I also shifted things around in the world building since the setting has changed.

I’m really glad you like Jades design!!! I really struggled to make her look interesting after breezing through Rori’s design so I’m really really happy you like her!

So their backstories are pretty similar to the original story with a few changes. Rori is a weird and off putting Angel who isn’t well liked in heaven, so she gets pawned off a protect they are working on in the hell branch. But he’ll really doesn’t want some random Angel who doesn’t know what she’s doing working there and changing everything so in a bid to get Rori to leave they pair her with Jade, a very successful demon of sloth, who they hope will be so uncooperative that Rori will leave of her own volition. But for some reason now that Rori is around Jade is suddenly much more motivated.(down BAD) so it doesn’t work. Also Jade was raised by a single mom Sucubis (idk how to spell that) and that complicates things a lot because she is very involved in her baby girls life despite the fact that Jade is in her 30s.(and her sucubus mom takes one look at Roris skimpy little outfit and how unabashedly obsessed Rori is with her baby and immediately accepts Rori as part of the family) (I already talked a bit about Roris family at the start so I won’t restate that here)

I made Disconnect/Autumn (they're both the same character asdfghj) where she's a Harpy bearded-vulture with a little bit of biblically accurate angel and penguin (she has the mouth of a penguin) and with a teeny bit of mothman. So the basic story is that in my OG au soundwave adopts a human child but she gets kidnapped and essentially changed into a cybertronian look-alike, where externally she somewhat look like a transformer (although more like a skinwalker to them asdfghj) but on the inside she is mostly organic (think evangelion). So I'm thinking in this au maybe she gets kidnapped by some weird cultists named F.L.E.S.H or C.R.Y.P.T or something and essentially is cut into pieces, with new organs being attached and some sort of ritual happening where she turns into this thing. But it isn't the pure angel they thought she would turn into so they were like "Damn bitch u ugly" and put a weird magic cover on her face to contain her power and rage (kinda like empurita?) and she gets saved by the autobots or whatever they're called in this world. (I'm thinking about making optimus a crocodile because in the og show he turned into one and him carrying his team members in his maw like mama crocs do would be adorable, and for sideswipe maybe a sort of skinwalker maned wolf hyena vibe??? Cause he's just lanky like that asdghj For soundwave either a vampire/spark-eater or maybe a siren??? cause it's weirdly canon in the comics that people thinks he's attractive and he knows it.)

SO UHHHH as in official biblical angel depiction . i love cherubs they get me. theyre small and cute and fat and have little wings i like them a lot. i never rlly related to the archangel gabriel depiction (u know w the long blonde hair and the masculine face and white robes etc) but i think my favorite modern interpretation of angels is when ppl r like “yeah they’re telephone polls” or draw them with human bodies but giant stars as heads with eyes. also idk if they count as angel depictions but ive always associated the genre of ��human figure that is featureless and glowing sometimes wearing clothes oftentimes outdoors” with angels. those are sooo me. i dont rlly connect with the current trend of biblically accurate angels (or torah accurate? ive seen discussion about whether the term biblical is correct for those depictions or whether they were pulled from the torah and not the king james bible) with the hoops and the eyes on the hoops and wings. those always seemed to be much more mature depictions of angels (like archangels, like gabriel, i think would look like that) rather than cherubs or even the hyperfeminine depiction of angels in media. sorry i hella went on a tangent there i just have thoughts

first of all, thank you for asking about this fic!! it's one that i think is very underrated lol but i know that's because it's an AU and a bit of a weird one. i was very inspired by the whole 'be not afraid' gag surrounding 'biblically accurate angels' and how that plays into monsterfucking. i love fallen angel homelander conceptually, and how he plays into themes of worship, love and corruption. he already represents a being beyond reproach, a "perfect" entity. it felt pretty natural turning that into a more atmospheric horror piece.

This will be a long answer:

I don't hate Good Omens. I *love* Good Omens. The book is a constant source of joy and inspiration.

The radio play was a bit weird to me, but it's nevertheless immensely enjoyable.

I can't say anything about the graphic novel yet, but so far it looks good and solid. The only criticism for that I can give so far is that imo it's a little disappointing we got Crowley and Aziraphale in human-shapes in Eden again, when a drawn medium opened up a lot of possibilities for going wild with 'biblically accurate angel' and giant demonic snake. it's a case of YMMV.

No, I love Good Omens. What I hate is that show on amazon with the same name, because that is not Good Omens. Sure, the names are the same and Neil Gaiman is writing the script, but it still is not Good Omens. Because the core of it is missing, the heart.

That is what's making me so angry.

Of course, when you adapt any given story from page to a different medium, there will be changes. Take a moment very early on in the radioplay, when they gave Hastur a mobile phone so he could call up Crowley, leading to Crowley expositioning about the M25. Is it a little clunky? Sure, but for the medium it works.

The show, however, seems to make changes that make no sense for the story or medium.

Now, I give you this: It is unfair of me to lash out at Mr Gaiman like this, for which I apologise. I do not know what made him make these changes. It could, of course and in the worst case, be ignorance and malice. But malicious demands from amazon (after all, the book is very, very, very anti-establishment, if you want, and book!Crowley has no love for people like bezos) could very well be the reason just like being simply at a loss and throwing in whatever's deemed 'will make fans happy'.

We don't know. So, for the lashing out, I do apologize.

But for the criticism, that stands. Because the show is going in directions that are very much the polar opposite of the book.

The book is about humanity, about choice, and how we ALL matter. How there are no chosen ones, how we all have a part in shaping history. Names that go down in history do so because of the actions of many, not because they were predestined to do so.

Which is an amazing, refreshing and, most importantly, hopeful message, that's especially these days needed more than ever it would seem. Look around, how many people think that their actions don't matter because of, amongst others, people like bezos.

But look what the WGA strike accomplished. It was the actions of many, not just those at the picket line, but the support from fans, from all around the world.

But the show? The show is the opposite. Not only does it constantly demean the working class (Crowley likening Lucifer's rebellion to workers' unions so thinly veiled it's fishnet, or now the whole declaring demons (who in the book were akin to the working class while Heaven was posh upper class, and the book very much sided with the working class) especially too dumb to deserve to live (this very much reeks of meddling from amazon, unless Mr Gaiman really is that much of a pretentious, aloof asshole and it's been done on purpose... and seeing how he talks 'bout demons now...)) it also makes Crowley out to be the chosen one type who cannot do wrong. Even when this Crowley messes up, it's always exactly the right thing. Because Crowley did it. With Aziraphale it's the opposite. He can't do right. He has been reduced down to the bumbling, dim sidekick with a crush on the amazing genius chosen one (sound familiar?)

Why? There is nothing in the medium that would have required these changes.

But it gets worse. Both seasons, I give you that, have their good ideas:

Having Crowley and Az return to the bookshop after the birthday party, showing the two throughout history, Muriel, expanding the denizens of Heaven and Hell, yes, those are great ideas. But they are all not used as well as they could.

It's just baffling. The whole show has this bizarre vibe of hating the fans. As if we are (like demons) too dumb to deserve to live. It's what I ramble about. When the show's cinematography decides to frame scenes so supposed eastereggs cannot be missed, when the pacing is off and the editing makes little sense.

What I can give you (and Mr Gaiman) and will do so, is that the script-book for s1 (never checked if there's one for s2) is doing much better. The pacing is more even, the characters are better fleshed out, the flow of the story makes a lot more sense. So what happened?

As said initially, it might be a lot of things, none of them good.

And then we get crass changes to personality and all with characters like beelzebub and the explanation isn't just flimsy, it's frightening. Beelzebub has been stepford-wifed. Suddenly, supposedly by 'the power of love' they're submissive, cozy-wozy, caring, etc.

Love doesn't do that. people don't do a complete 180 just cause they're 'in love' especially when there's been almost no common ground

Beelzebub and Gabriel had their position in their respective companies, and an air of 'wanting to bite people's heads off', but what we have on the show now is nothing that builds up on that. It's really just catering to the fans that were the loudest. The people that are now so eager pairing off demons and angels to 'fix' demons.

Which is simply frightening. Especially looking at how they justify it, what they declare romantic in a distinct 'this is romantic in fiction AND IRL' way.

And then there's everything else of s2: Nothing. There's no plot, there's actions to pad out 5 3/4 episodes, but everything feels very 'throw everything and the kitchen sink at the wall, but don't wait what sticks'. Which, yes, could absolutely be amazon's fault again.

It really feels as if the whole season was only there to have the '6-6-8' pattern in the end.

And it makes me angry.

It's great that the WGA won with flying colours, but no matter what you, anon, or I may think about what s3 might bring, you have to admit that what we have right now isn't much of a solid foundation, even if there can now be proper rewrites, more input (so better sounding boards etc)

It makes me sad, it makes me furious, because it is such a great book, and I'm one of those people I want to understand why things happen.

I love Good Omens the book, I'd LOVE to see it adapted to screen proper, I love the creativity of the fandom, but so much of that is now found outside of the the show fans. Which... shouldn't be. We were a weird and creative bunch, even after s1. People began looking into mythology and history to produce amazing works, but now? Now it feels as if people and show try to snuff out every glimmer of creativity, any given bit that isn't 100% the shows canon. When the show itself can't even stick to continuity.

So, as said, you want to talk, my ask box is open. If not, as snarky as this may sound, I'd say practice what you preach and simply block the 'good omens critical' tag, that's what I tag my rambling for.

yes absolutely I’m so glad u asked!!!!!! i love talking abt my horrible ocs LAWLZ- I actually have Gavin’s backstory in my writing tag but I would love to talk abt him and Sam more now bc they are very dear to me… basically Sam is one of the last remaining members of an ancient alien race that are like planet sized and have crazy magic and shit. They sort of just hung out in space until people on other planets begun to notice them and worship them as gods, with the aliens deciding to try and fill the role, watching over the planets and their inhabitants. Sam and Gavin live on a fucked up post apocalyptic future earth populated with spirits and demons and shit but more on that later. A big reason the planet is so fucked is that Earths inhabitants began to fear Sams species and decided to try and kill them, mostly succeeding, except for one child who rocketed to Earth and got stuck in a much smaller and more comprehensible form until their “awakening”. Sam always felt connected to the deities though, and became one of the last remaining believers. He would always go out and look at the corpse of Earths former protector in the sky and pray before going to bed. One day, a single tear fell from its eye and splashed Sam and all the memories just flooded back. She basically went like “OH SHIT IM GOD I GUESS” and became a biblically accurate angel kaiju thing because cringe culture is dead lol. It doesn’t make a lot of sense but hey we ball- I don’t have a lot of the story planned out OOPS, but a lot of it is based on spirituality and how religion can’t solve your problems, you have to take care of them yourself, meant in a literal sense, because Sam waited most of their life for someone to save her, but ended up becoming the very thing he prayed to every night. Idk man I’ve had this OC since 2017 maybe I get to go a little wild

about Gavin, this is where we come back to the spirits and stuff !!!! he shares his body with a demonic cat spirit in a sort of parasitic symbiotic relationship. This cat was literally just some roadkill stray, but as the fury and ambition built up in its soul, it became a horrific and tyrannical monster with no trace of its older self. It believed that since it’s life was taken away with such little care, it should be allowed to do the same to others in order for its power to grow, so that eventually it can get back the life it believed it was owed. This demon stalked Gavin his whole life because he saw the spark of that same ambition and rage in him, and decided to get him killed so it could take his body and use it for its own gain. Gavin also believed that he deserved to continue living as long as he wanted to, so when this spirit offered to bring him back for the price of complete control over his own soul, he took the deal. The demon needs living souls to be able to gain enough power to communicate with the higher level spiritual beings, so he would make Gavin eat animals and people in order to get that from him. After a while though, Gavin started to kill by himself. He was abused for most of his life leading up to his death, so he started to kill and eat random people that he saw his abusers in. He believes that not only do these people owe him their lives, that he’s doing the world a favor by getting rid of them. Over time, he loses most of the compassion he had in the past and becomes more and more like the demon he shares his body with, because after everything he’s been through, the world owes him that, doesn’t it? Basically, he’s awful, but he’s also very silly and he has a partner who’s the only person he actually likes LOL
