Reverse unpopular opinion ask meme: Irregular polygons

Irregular polygons are awesome. You can do so much more with them, in so many areas, but I'm going to limit myself to talking about just two of them: tiling and triangle centers.

(Did you think I was going to be all snobby toward my irregular friends and give them only grudging approval? Heck no, I love those guys! And so by the rules of the meme I get to infodump about the things I love, so this may be long but you asked for it.)

Let's first talk about covering the plane with copies of a single shape -- a monohedral tiling. And for now, let's restrict ourselves to periodic tilings. All triangles and all non-self-intersecting quadrilaterals tile the plane periodically, so that's not very interesting. All you have to do is place one polygon and then make copies by rotating 180 degrees around the midpoints of the sides.

With five sides, things become more complicated, because regular pentagons don't tile by themselves, but there are fifteen ways an irregular pentagon can periodically tile the plane. Here are four of them that were discovered in 1976 and 1977 by Marjorie Rice, an amateur mathematician.

There are three types of monohedral periodic convex hexagonal tilings.

For polygons with seven or more sides, there are no monohedral periodic tilings using a convex prototile , but there are periodic tilings for nonconvex polygons of any size. Some of them are quite famous.

Most of Escher's work in his Regular Division of the Plane series uses shapes with curves as well as straight sides, so they don't show polygon tilings, strictly, but the patterns do point toward complex tilings that are visually pleasing.

Irregulars can tile aperiodically, too. Here's a pentagon tiling with 6-fold rotational symmetry. It can be extended infinitely, and tilings can be constructed with pentagons for n-fold symmetry of any n>2.

Going back to non-convex shapes, here's the Voderberg tile, an enneagon that forms a spiral tiling. Notably, one copy of the shape can be completely surrounded by two others.

And of course I can't go without mentioning the tiling news of the century: "Tile (1,1)", aka the Hat, aka the T-shirt, a tridecagon (and polykite) that can tile the plane but only aperiodically. IDK if you follow polygon news but this was huge.

Okay, enough about tilings. With tilngs it's pretty easy to get what's going on just by looking at them, but my next topic, triangle centers, requires a bit more explanation. Also there's a bit of jargon, but I will try to keep it simple.

Take an arbitrary triangle ABC. Where is its center? One way you might define it is to find the midpoint of each side and draw a line to it from the opposite vertex. Each line divides the triangle in half, and these three lines (the medians) all cross at a point, the centroid. This works for any triangle, no matter its shape. The point marks the center of gravity of the area of the triangle, and also the center of gravity of its vertices. Based on that, you could consider this the center of the triangle.

Or you could work with angles instead of sides. Draw lines from each vertex that divide the angles in half (the angle bisectors). These all meet at a point called the incenter, which marks the center of the largest circle that fits inside the triangle. To put it another way, it's the point that is equidistant from all three sides. That's another point you could call the center of the triangle.

Or, how about a circle around the triangle instead? From the midpoints of the sides, draw the perpendicular bisectors. Again, they all intersect at a point, the circumcenter, which is the center of the circle that passes through the vertices -- the point that is equidistant from all three of them. So you could also call that the center of the triangle.

Or how about drawing perpendicular lines from the sides again, but having them pass through the opposite vertices (the altitudes)? They coincide at a point called the orthocenter. Isn't that neat? Yet another point we could call the center of the triangle.

But wait -- can we? For an obtuse triangle, the circumcenter and the orthocenter are going to lie outside the triangle. (For the orthocenter of an obtuse triangle, you have to extend each side into a line, and draw the altitude as a perpendicular to that.) Being outside a thing is really not what we have in mind when we talk about the center of the thing. Should we care about that?

Maybe not. Check this out. We'll go back to the circumcircle, and draw tangents to it at the three vertices. The three tangents form the tangential triangle (in blue), which we'll call A'B'C', where A' is opposite A, and so on with B and C. Now draw the circle that passes through A, A', and the circumcenter, and do the analogous construction for B and C (in red). The three circles coincide in two places: the circumcenter and another point called the far-out point. And as the name suggests, this is usually well outside the triangle, even for acute triangles.

There's no reasonable way to call this point the center of the circle. But so what? I just love the fact that the three circles line up like that. I no longer care about finding "the" center of the triangle. I no longer care that "center" is rather a misnomer for many of these points. I just think it's neat that you can draw these constructions on ordinary aysmmetrical triangles and they keep all converging on one point. Want more? Reflect the medians across the angle bisectors, and they all meet at the symmedian point. Or connect the vertices of the tangential triangle with the intersections of the medians and the circumcircle. Those lines meet at the Exeter point. Or, from each vertex, draw the line that splits the perimeter of the triangle in half. These are called the splitters, and they meet at the Nagel point. And on and on and on.

You can simply wander around a triangle, connecting things that relate somehow to vertex A, then do the equivalent thing for B and C, and stumble upon new centers. And there are tens of thousands of these things, constructed with straightedge and compass or by other methods. And there are so many ways to enjoy these things. You can page through the enormous collection and get a kind of stamp-collecting satisfaction just looking at their variety and knowing that they exist. Or you can appreciate the proofs that show that the constructions really do specify a unique point. Or proofs that show that a point constructed to have one property has a surprisingly different property. Or you can notice that the points fall into certain families and appreciate the connections between them. (For instance, the centroid, circumcenter, orthocenter, far-out point, and Exeter point, among others, all happen to lie on the same line, the Euler line.) Or you can convert the points to trilinear coordinates, manipulate them algebraically, and get to know them that way.

But to appreciate them at all, you need to work with irregular triangles. Because here's the thing: in an equilateral triangle, all these points collapse to the same point. Everything simplifies to a single center, and the incredible wealth of invisible structure that teems inside every ordinary triangle is gone.

You have finally found "the" center, but at what cost? Symmetry is death. Only through asymmetry will the vast truth of the triangle be revealed to you.

And those are just a few of the reasons irregular polygons are cool!

I was thinking about warrior cats last night because of course I was but I was thinking about how starclan and the dark forest border each other and how dark forest cats can’t leave but starclan cats can enter but. even in the dark forest you can stare out on what life could have been. isn’t that the greatest hell?

anyway convex. reasonably they’re both going to hell but for the sake of peace and love and cat romance they’re not. Scar’s an Old dark forest cat he’s been there for AGES and he’s bitter and mean and Angry so what he does to pass the time is hang out by the border, befriend starclan cats and trick them into entering the dark forest where he can kill and eat them. yknow. normal cat stuff. There’s no damn prey in the dark forest right!!!!! Man’s gotta eat somehow!!!! (he was doing this before he died lol)

Cub is a former kittypet turned medicine cat apprentice that died young, adult aged, but not before he could receive his full medicine cat name. He doesn’t like being called Cubpaw though, so he goes by just the prefix in Starclan. Cub was specifically chosen to become a medicine cat because he has such an affinity for the stars and the sky, and the clan cats misspoke this soooo badly for him being like really religious. It’s not that. He just thinks it’s neat. He came to the forest on a rumor that the stars were brighter than in the city, and the clan cats were led to believe he was sent by Starclan as some kind of prophet (the autism REALLY confused them). Cub does not have the stature of a Windclan cat or the ability to hunt Windclan prey, but I imagine that’s where he ended up because of the high hills and clear skies. He probably died tragically, killed by a fox or dog, or maybe another clan cat who viewed him as a threat. Maybe he found something out that he shouldn’t have, and didn’t realize what he was seeing until it was over.

Regardless. He is not fussed. Being dead is fucking awesome!!!!! Look at the stars!!!!! His whole BODY is stars this is like BEST CASE SCENARIO!!!!!

The place of no stars, naturally, compels him. No stars? Not even one? I know this is cat hell, but seriously! He has to know. He has to know if it’s really true.

Scar finds Cub at the edge of the forest, trying to look in. There’s a small transition period of trees before Scar could really reach him, but it’s still a bit of a shock that Cub is not even trying to keep his distance. Usually Starclan cats are a lot more wary, even when they’re curious. Scar calls out from the dark, expecting this to change. Instead, Cub looks thrilled to see them. He has to ask! Are there really no stars?

Scars rolls his eyes. Who is this guy anyway? A young Starclan cat clearly, he’s way too bright to have been dead a long time. He tells Cub he better come find out for himself if he really wants to know. Cub is thrilled to have an invitation! epic! I can’t wait to see what cat hell looks like :3 Scar is so fucking baffled by this he doesn’t have the brains to attack when Cub just walks right past him. No stars here… weird! Scar just gaped at him as this idiot, bright as the sun, wanders into the dark forest signaling to everyone in a five mile radius hello! I’m here! Come kill me please :)

Then Scar blinks and he’s fucking gone. Abra kadabra. Poof. How did I lose the sun. What the fuck. (Cub climbed a tree. He’s looking for the stars. He gets stuck up a tree for multiple days and somehow no one finds him despite being a literal beacon of light)

he does scare the life out of scar in those next couple days when he falls out of a bough of leaves and nearly clobbers the both of them out of some of the tallest trees in the forest. hey! You’re that guy! help. I can not find the stars. They weren’t lying when they said there were no stars here. Also I can’t get down. No one ever taught me how to do that. How did you end up in hell? < icebreaker questions to lighten the mood

IT'S SCAR TIME BABAEYYYY HERE COME THE (head)CANONS

He's my favorite which means he suffers the most so this post is a little bit of a downer, not gonna lie. But there's silly stuff in there too I promise!!11!

Scar's full name is Scar Conn Goodtimes. You may be asking yourself: what kind of name is that? How is his middle name con? What kind of parent would do that to their child? WELL, the answer is BECAUSE I SAID SO. Idk I just thought it would be goofy if convex had the middle names "con" and "vex". Soooo yeah lol

As far as origins and backstory are concerned, Scar is half vex and half elf. His mother was a vex hybrid, and had two kids, Cub and Scar (I'll post about Cub tomorrow probably). They're technically half-brothers, but they don't really care enough to talk about the logistics of it. As far as they (and everyone else, atp) are concerned, they're just brothers. Plain and simple.

Scar and Cub grew up without their parents, and were primarily raised by their maternal grandmother, the only human in their family. She taught them anything she knew about their mother, their fathers, and their magic. Thus, Scar and Cub practiced with their vex magic until they were finally able to properly wield it. (Vex magic has many capabilities, especially among family members, but the primary way it manifests is by having a particular trait that it can amplify. Scar, for example, can amplify someone or something's strength.) Scar had a tougher time with it, and it often backfired on him. That, combined with him being incredibly accident-prone, is how he ended up suiting his name so well.

In his late teens, Scar sustained an injury that caused major nerve damage and hindered his ability to walk, but with his magic he was still able to walk with the help of mobility aids (such as canes and crutches, and after a few years, a wheelchair). He refused to believe that it was irreversible, and when Cub made him a set of magic-powered walking braces, he thought his problems were solved. But that is not how chronic pain/illness works, even in a world with magic. So, he still uses a variation of aids, but the braces have to be used sparingly, as they draw from his magic and tire him out more quickly. That's why he mostly uses them when he's HOTGUY YEAH THAT'S RIGHT THIS IS A SUPERHERO AU.

Hotguy was hired by King Ren to head the Royal Guard and protect the city (and the king) from "nefarious evildoers". Of course, he mostly uses it as an excuse to play superhero, to which Cub is unwittingly dragged into. He's Scar's "guy in the chair", and even though he mostly just complains about Scar taking unnecessary risks, they both know he loves it.

i'd love to see chau convex and grian messing with doc and bdubs omgggg i'm imagining stuff like cutting a sliver off of the soles of bdubs' shoes every day and telling him he's shrinking. or just messing with doc's machines in general. breaking into his workspace and messing up the wiring, putting post-it notes on each machine with a silly made-up name and pretend function (e.g Deathray 9000; bakes and frosts cupcakes). talking about how old he is and how he's basically on his deathbed, when he's right there in front of them. there must be a kind of buzz to anonymous pranks. trying not to get in trouble. even if the prank seems to have an obvious culprit, if there's no way to prove who did it, then nothing can be done about it, right?

convex in this au is very malicious compliance, rebel in any way that they can

they were more or less forced to make a pact to work with the NHO, as they were captured after living a life of crime and their options were either “work for us or go to super jail”. they make a vex pact which they must abide by, but i would imagine the pact is something along the lines of, they have to work for the NHO and help them take down criminals. so they can’t outright ignore missions from the higher-ups as that would go against the pact, but the contract failed to account for the little things like mundane office pranks. i don’t think cub and scar are very pleased at all about that lack of freedom after living a lavish criminal lifestyle for years, so they take pretty much every opportunity they can to use loopholes to make things difficult for the NHO. you Really need to spell out instructions for them quite literally or else they will take advantage of any loophole.

that being said, they have to be sure not to act too out of line, as the other option of being sent to prison for one billion years still lingers. bdubs can’t exactly call for one of their best agents to be relieved of duty and sent to prison over someone (cub) leaving push pins on his office chair, to his dismay

I just made a Hermitcraft AU where Cub and Scar are scientists and they're experimenting on Skulk/Warden!Grian and studying his species, Cub was not that much of a caring scientist and would either torture Grian with needles or keep him chained in a small cell when he's done experimenting

However, Scar is actually the opposite...Scar is caring, And since he recognises the Warden's face and voice, He's trying to be as nice as possible, At this point he'd be willing to get him out of the lab in any way possible, Grian can't really tell what Scar and Cub look like, Since they wear masks & gloves whenever they're present around him, For "safety" . Which means that he doesn't recognise Scar at all, He sees him as a hostile like Cub, No matter how much Scar tries to help

The only way for Grian to recognise Scar is for Scar to remove his mask infront of Grian, Which he has to do that behind Cub's back . Once or if Grian finds out what's behind Scar's mask, He'd immediately run into the other's arms and cry into his arms, He would feel tiny bit of betrayal but what would make him happy is that he found his bestfriend .

Or, We can make it more angsty!!! Once/if Grian finds out what's under Scar's mask, He'll immediately feel betrayal, A traitor Scar . He'd be so mad that the skulk gets out of control, And an attack scene starts, Once Cub finds out, It would be too late, He can't do anything about it, He'd get attacked more than Scar, Scar would try his best to calm Grian down ... There was a small chance of Grian calming down, Though if he did, He'd stop, And start breaking down . Scar would either hug him or stay away from him, Scar would most likely calm Grian down since Grian is literally his bestfriend, Or atleast he thinks . The rest is up to y'all!!!

Ok big post for the unnamed 80s actor AU (please name ideas are appreciated)

It’s 1978 when grian makes his first book series(which is the life series) which has pretty good reviews but people more care about him for his looks, 1980 he becomes a model, 1982 he stars in his first movie and blows up almost immediately, then so on and so forth he stars in more movies and people really love him.

Grians kinda cocky and really enjoys acting all together when later he stars making some music to try a new genre and people really like his music which makes him very very popular.

Anyways that’s mostly just trying to make plot kinda clear by fleshing out his rise to fame.

But mostly the plot just follows grian being a star which isn’t really a plot but idc I just like to imagine Grian with a mullet

Although I am a big hermitshipper I don’t think I will be making any like cannon to AU ships, like I’ll make it so like there’s kinda tension between 2 characters but like no actual couples. I wanna keep this open for everybody including the non hermit shippers<33(This will most just be Grian x Mumbo or Scarian (convex will be the most ‘couple’ pairing but won’t outright say they are together) but nothing too serious like the public will not ever draw conclusions)

Also I will be following a lot of the general public’s idea in the 80s about society, as it is the 80s and the 80s is one of my hyperfixations, but no one will be outright gay, because point it’s the 80s.

Need help with Convex, please!

Hi, Hermitcraft enjoyer who jumped on in Season 7 here. I recently finished updating my hermit tier list (gives my fingers something to do while watching episodes) and found that Scar and Cub are my fourth and third place favourites respectively. (Zedaph and Gem btw). Obvi this got me thinking about how there is, theoretically, an entire season and a half's worth of dynamic between them that I've never seen! This is exciting, except, I don't really have time to watch through the whole of their seasons 5 and 6 to get to the good duo stuff. (Both of their season 6 lineups are well over 100 episodes... Cub has over 200!! Yikes.)

So I'm consulting you, an expert, to help me out. Is there a list of particular episodes that show off their dynamic especially well? Or, if not that, then is there a good jumping on point from one or both perspectives to get right to the good stuff? I suspect the seasons don't just start with them teamed up after all. A number past which they're already an established group would be nice to know.

there are two playlists of the episodes with their interactions (s4 & s5 and s6) if that's something you would be interested in, though i can't necessarily recommend those for properly wanting to learn about them as you would miss quite a lot of stuff and things will most likely feel confusing :p if i remember correctly the vex stuff starts in scar's episode 24 and cub's episode 40 in s5 so i guess that could maybe be a bit of a jumping on point? (though there are a few pranks before that, you can find a links to the prank episodes here)

unfortunately the thing with convex stuff is that it's rather... complicated. it's everywhere, once you start looking. little bits and casual mentions all over the place. my best tip would probably be trying to watch through the seasons while doing something else, having the episodes play in the background so you can tune in when something sounds important, or skimming through things like long parts focused purely on building to get to the more relevant stuff. scar's seasons have less of the vex stuff but they're also a lot shorter and easier to get through and with that knowledge you can pretty easily watch cub's episodes from here and there and have some sort of an idea of what is going on :D it's a lot but man is it also a lot of fun

i'm sorry this isn't a very good answer for what you were asking for but i hope you can still get something out of this!

"the light of the moon is hidden" reference to Cancer.

Summer tropic is in Cancer, and the winter tropic in Capricorn. And since Cancer is nearest to us, it is very properly attributed to the Moon, which is the nearest of all the heavenly bodies to the earth. But as the southern pole, by its great distance, is invisible to us, hence Capricorn is attributed to Kronos (Saturn)

in On the Cave of the Nymphs by Porphyry:

Homer was not satisfied with saying that it had two gates, but adds that one of the gates was turned towards the north, but the other which was more divine, to the south. He also says that the northern gate was pervious to descent, but does not indicate whether this was also the case with the southern gate. For of this, he only says, "It is inaccessible to men, but it is the path of the immortals

You can kinda see the similar gnosis/insight people have to associate Helios with Hecate in that sense if you attribute this oracle line to Hecate like Psellus did.

Porphyry clearly states that the signs from Cancer to Capricorn, which constitute the descent of a soul into a body, are situated in the following order: and the first of these is Leo, which is the house of Helios (the Sun); afterwards Virgo, which is the house of Hermes (Mercury); Libra, the house of Aphrodite (Venus); Scorpius, of Ares (Mars); Sagittarius, of Zeus (Jupiter); and Capricornus, of Kronos (Saturn). “But from Capricorn,” he adds, the ascent is naturally “in an inverse order.” That is, in an inverse order on the opposing curve of the wheel of the zodiac. Aquarius is attributed to Kronos; Pisces, to Zeus; Aries, to Ares; Taurus, to Aphrodite; Gemini, to Hermes; and in the last place Cancer to the Selene (the Moon), only upon the soul’s descent into a body is the sun’s sign (Leo) encountered. This is basically the whole dichotomy of Metatron and Sandalphon, because you get that similar connection between Malkuth/Kether and Enoch/Elijah, what I see personally is this hinting toward merkavah and Hekhalot literature where you descened to the chariot/merkavah. In a way I can definitely say the hints are astrologically coded but the practice itself isn't astrological strictly.

the whole descent into mysteries is in that verse, the curved mass of heaven nor do star shine IS THE LITERAL HEAVEN if you scry them or work through the gates of merkavah. The light of the moon is hidden and earth is not secured because you're reaching a place that's not "here" in the objective sense of the world, everything is seen by flashes of lighting is very apt way to describe how you actually see stuff there! almost very reminiscent of dreamy visions where everything is remembered haphazardly !

In summary the astrological hints are just symbolic not practically invalid but not restrictive into it, since the sun/lion-form is the first thing that come after Saturn in descent and last thing before Moon then you can see the hint THERE. It's not lion, but the sun which when it shine so brightly it will hide the rays of the moon, you can see that the sun is both what we can fall into and we can rise through.

I definitely felt very excited to share my hot take about this oracle line, because it is rather very related to some other blogs that I did work with. Now...dare I say that these lion forms is what Daniel saw in the pit when he got thrown? notice how Daniel immediately start having visions after the lion pits from Daniel 6 to 7, it is an immediate jump.
