Big Game Hunting Tales from the Early 1900s by Graham M. Mott

The fall moon that comes nearest the first of October brings with it the height of the hunting season for moose and consequently, the best of the hunting season. Later comes the snow which closely rivals the rut. Between these two seasons comes the last two weeks in October which are likely to give barren hunting in the New Brunswick woods. As the rut is over, the old bulls are wary, and most of the fools are dead. Generally, ice has formed on the ponds and dead waters. The bulls are on the high beech ridges indulging in pleasant and tender memories of the last full moon.

Yet, despite the disadvantages of the season, the 17th of October found me starting a two-week hunt with Adam Moore on the little Tobique River in New Brunswick, Canada. The weather had turned warm. Two days of hunting convinced us that we had a better chance near the water than on the ridges. On the 19th after working over the ridges in the morning, we visited a lick at noon which Adam had discovered during the past summer. It was located about three miles back from our camp on the Tobique River and consisted of a small pond or mudhole about twenty-five feet wide by fifty feet long. This spot was in the depths of the forest surrounded by thickets of young firs and spruces. From every direction, muddy game trails led into it. The water and mud in the hole seemed to have no distinctive qualities, but something about it was evidently attractive to the moose.

Log Platform

When Adam first discovered the lick, he was confronted with a problem. It was impossible to lie in wait anywhere near the hole without the moose seeing or scenting a hunter before he could get a shot. To obviate this difficulty, he built a platform of logs in the top of a large yellow birch tree near the edge of the hole. A rough ladder led up it and formed a first-rate imitation of the machan* of East Indian hunting stories. The height of the machan prevented the scent from getting low enough to warn the moose while the hunter commanded the entire hole and its approaches. *Editor’s Note: Machan is a platform (as in a tree) used for observation in hunting.

iceberg lounge proprietor jason who keeps your favorite snacks in his office for the nights when you come to work with him and get tired of the club's chaos and just wanna hang out in the back. if you're in the mood for something else and he's too busy to take you home, he sends one of his assistants to pick it up or doordashes it to the club for you. he gets a minifridge for your favorite drinks/ice cream (i hc he's a moosetracks kinda man). one night he drinks one of your strawberry lemonades or whatever and it stains his tongue and lips pink but he doesn't notice and no one knows how to tell him because he's scary so everyone's just giving him weird looks and he doesn't know why. then he goes back to his office where you're hanging out and you look at him and burst out laughing. then he starts keeping a toothbrush in his office too.

other things he keeps in his office for you for when you visit:

blanket

makeup wipes (if you wear makeup) /face wipes

slippers for if you wear heels and your feet get tired

noice cancelling headphones - he also uses these when he's working and feels anxious/overwhelmed

your preferred lip balm - another thing he helps himself to, partially because he needs it, partially because it tastes like you

spare sweatshirt

books you like in case u get bored

first-aid kit, but that's for you to use on him when the club's side hustle gives him trouble

and he has at least one framed picture of you on his desk duhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Sweet Treat (1/1) (jegulus | raising harry)

"Dad? Why does Papa not know bubblegum?" Harry said bright green eyes looking up at him, with his tiny hands still pressed on the glass of the display case.

James looked at his son and then at Regulus, trying to see if he was just joking with Harry or not. All James saw was confusion and curiosity searching over all the flavours in the shoppe.

"Wait why do you look so confused?"

"I didn't know ice cream came in so many flavours..." Regulus whispered in awe. "I thought it was just vanilla, chocolate, or fraise," he said accent heavy on the fruit.

Harry giggled and pulled on James' shirt, "papa said strawberry dad," bright smile on his face.

"Yes thank you for translating," James said and rolled his eyes but the fondness was clear.

"Well love, which should I try?" Regulus said looking at Harry.

Harry pointed to all the flavours calling them out one by one, until he reached a prailine one and said "but not that one, Il-y-a des noix and personne aime ca," Harry explained.

"I don't think Papa wants every flavour Haz," James said.

The cashier came over to them, "what can I get for you?" They asked.

Harry jumped up, "bubblegum! Please!" he squeaked.

"Yes one kiddie size of the bubblegum, and I'll do a moosetracks, and?" James looked at Regulus but his eyes were wide in indecision.

You pick, he mouthed, and James nodded.

"And..." James ran his eyes over the flavours again. "Ahh yes, the caramel cappuccino please. And that's all thank you," James finished their order.

They went to sit outside, where there were small tables with umbrellas covering them from the beating sun.

Harry made a mess quickly but he was just a boy, and he was so happy neither parent could care.

"Try," James said holding out his cone to Regulus who took a small bite.

"Hmmm peanutbuttery," Regulus commented. "That's quite nice," he added savouring the end notes.

He held up his own and then looked back at James' "I think I like this one better. It has little ribbons of crunch in it. Who knew ice cream could be so wild," Regulus said still mesmerized.

And while James laughed, he was just as mesmerized by Regulus as any other daily occurrence, like ice cream.

If it's chocolate, he's getting it. And if there's multiple flavors of chocolate at the ice cream parlor, he's just getting them all.

Oooo, thank you! I love peanut butter. One of my faves is Moosetracks.

As for the sundae - I'd probably either get a hot fudge brownie sundae or a turtle sundae. And I'd share with Joel.

She explained, looking to the high-strung Arrian and the blasé Saqqara. "That's cows' milk ice cream, by the way. And mint is an edible plant with a cool flavor. It's mostly used for food stuff."

It was odd watching the two and their dynamic in person. But she enjoyed them so far. She passed them each a spoon. "I've got several flavors, chocolate, vanilla, the mint you're holding, as well as moosetracks. Which has peanut butter."

She scooted just a smidgen closer to Arrian. "Do you want anything to drink? I've got all these snacks here, but I've also got soda, coffee, tea, and whatever's on the fridge."

Arrian still seems to be wrestling with the concept of ice cream, but after staring for a second at his Narthecium, which has analysed the composition of the container's contents and is now patiently running row after row of ingredients and their effects on an Astartes' metabolism (practically none, just an energy source) across its small screen, takes a spoonful of the cold substance and tastes it. He tests the flavour with his brows drawn together in concentration, mumbling absently "No, you're not getting anything, you don't even have bodies" - to whomever.

The spiritual component doesn't seem to bother him - or he doesn't take it seriously.

In complete contrast to Saqqara, who now turns completely round to the sofa and pulls himself up onto his knees - ready to jump up at any moment. "in most universes?! Like ... the warp? A world next to our world? Without the gods?!"
