Some key photos from recent days; tree out the front and phone photo of greater celandine in Winchester yesterday, red campion, view, Great Crested Grebe chick, Greylag Goose goslings and Moorhen and chick at Lakeside Country Park today and periwinkle and Greylag Goose and goslings and sky on Tuesday. It's been fantastic seeing so many young birds this week.

[ID: Five photos of solitary moorhen chicks, which are baby birds with black legs, black feathers, and black skin around the eyes, with a red beak that's yellow at the tip. The first photo, which shows a chick standing in an outdoor setting, has a stamp in the bottom right corner indicating "digii.eu" and that the image is © 2016 by Marjin Kampf [taken at the Slimbridge Wetland Centre]. The other four photos don't have origin notes, but show moorhen chicks standing, or sitting with their featherless wings raised, on a white background. /end ID]

Did I tell you that I love moorhens? I do. I find them cute and funny. I mean they have these very long toes, but then they are very good at climbing and they built their nest quite high up above the water in bushes. And just like the crows they can remember people which is why some of them know me and they come running up to me as soon as they see me. And they are fierce birds that are very territorial and fight for their chicks, even the crows don't want to mess with them.
This by the way is one of the local couples and their only surviving chick occupying the park bank which I usually sit on with my bench buddy crow. They had four in two hatches, but only one made it until now, which is not unusual. They have quite a lot of enemies.

If you have never seen a common moorhen chick, now you have.
We handled it and took pictures not for fun or to stress it out. I had to quickly take a snap and google by photo to make sure it was indeed a moorhen, and to learn what we should do with it. We took it out of the trail and closer to the pond, which was already very close and where Sandy had scared away, supposedly, its parent. Wiki says "When threatened, the young may cling to the parents' body, after which the adult birds fly away to safety, carrying their offspring with them," so hopefully everything will be alright.
My partner says it was very soft and pleasant to the touch, but I didn't get the chance to touch it. I didn't want to stress it longer than necessary :( That's also why the pictures are so bad. (no, parents will not reject it because it smells like human, that's a myth) I hope we did the right thing...when we came back there ten minutes later, it was nowhere to be found, I think that's a good sign.

5/5/23-Lakeside and home
Pictures taken in this set: 1. One of four adorable Moorhen chicks I had heard were here and was very pleased to find on my lunch time walk, I think they are an enigmatic member of the band of Lakeside young birds. 2. Cute Mallard ducklings a bit further on. 3, 5, 8 and 10. Beautiful views on my lunch time and evening Lakeside walks, there were nice bits of blossom including hawthorn I believe scattered across the landscape that I enjoyed today still. 4. My first Lakeside vetch of the spring a pretty little flower I enjoyed here today. 6. Woodruff in a flower bed at Lakeside. 7. Greylag Goose gosling idly pecking in the daisies without a care in the world. 9. Gorse in a corner in the eastern meadows just starting to wane in flower, making me feel full circle as I recalled seeing gorse in flower at this spot on my New Year’s Day bird year list building walk here. It’s amazing how different it feels now to four months ago out there and this gorse something I’ve had an amazing year so far for seeing in flower has been a nice constant.
More highlights in a wealth of flowers observed when out today were fresh poppy and cornflower with the winter cress on the flower bed out the front, some dazzling bugle one I’d not seen at Lakeside before, my first black medick or hop trefoil of the year, gorgeous garlic mustard, cow parsley, ground ivy, speedwell, golden buttercups, daisy, dandelion and cowslips holding on. Other captivating, pure and invigorating moments spent outside in nature today included being immersed in Swifts swirling over the northern path, sensing the wind rustle a tree’s green leaves and a Speckled Wood illuminated atop a tree like a spring fairy. A brilliant warbler double of Blackcap seen on my lunch time walk and Whitethroat in the evening stood out today too as did a pair of Buzzards soaring high over Lakeside, Great Crested Grebes, notably lots of views of Starlings at Lakeside which was pleasant, a spider and the ever quirky image of a Terrapin (probably the Terrapin I’ve seen in previous years) on Kornwestheim lake. Blue Tit, Goldfinch and Collared Dove were good to see at home, with Chiffchaff, Song Thrush, Greenfinch, Blue Tit and Green Woodpecker heard alongside Robin which I also saw at Lakeside and the elegant song of Blackbird from home making it good day of hearing birds.

This week's Bestiary Posting is a doozy. We've got quite a collection of miscellaneous birds, and I decided I would just draw them all, for whatever reason. No color this week though, since I'm lazy, and also my computer is acting up, so I'm just gonna call it done before it crashes on me again.
Below I give a quick little blurb about each bird's inspiration, and under that the same picture with the birds labeled so you can guess for yourself which bird is which, and then scroll down to see if you were right.
Tluftasong - demon lovechild of an owl and a potoo Lokfotreag - a chickadee-type bird with a casque Hurrashbeg - a parrot that hangs upside down like a bat Konchilkuk - no real reason for this design other then I wanted a bird that looked smug Wobrahfmet - a corvid with a bald head Hrongnewit - a hummingird-kestrel creature on account of it 'hovering' around kitchens and meat markets Klomurgrae - an Egyptian vulture but with the long legs of a wading bird - I think he looks very charming Zagsmenrok - teeny little bird with a bit of a feather crest over it's eyes and beak like a helmetshrike Hreakgleav - a shaggy vulture with the posture of a bat Wahrembeag - a penguin-gull with a brood patch that has evolved into a marsupial-style pouch - might be my favorite of the bunch Sarbrufeat - bar-headed goose inspired, but with a hooked beak to fend off chick snatchers Keltrumram - a flightless pheasant/moorhen type of bird. Very round, very cuddly Grozfarwat - a little kildeer inspired bird Mortelgeng - if an albatross became an eagle for some reason Burngraega - a terrifying swan-heron beast - would make them bigger if it would've fit because I think the idea of giant stick birds with haunting voices is awesome Klethghrom - a crested pheasant with a beak like a snake's head

And that's all the birds.
