Plant of the Day
Saturday 14 January 2023
The seed pods of Lunaria annua (honesty, grandpa's specs, money in both pockets, moon seed, penny flower, silver plate, silver dollar) provide great winter interest. This plant can be a hardy annual but is usually a biennial, with large, heart-shaped leaves in the first year and open clusters of purple flowers in late spring of the second year.

Stephen Baxter - Moonseed (Voyager/HarperCollins, 1998 vs. HarperPrism, 1998)

I was reading a sci-fi book featuring Russain cosmonauts and the book mentioned the phrase 'Ни пуха ни пера'. I was tickled by the similarity to 'break a leg' BUT it has a call and response ('Go to hell' or 'to the devil with you') - who doesn't love call and response??
Heavy, you'll get a more playful response when Medic isn't hyper-focusing on the days battle plan.
#tf2#tf2 fanart#tf2 medic#tf2 heavy#tf2 scout#tf2 spy#tf2 demoman#the book was moonseed by stephen baxter it was pretty good but i mainly enjoyed it as scotland got blown up#medic is so rude...i'm so sorry russain speakers if this is off and wrong. i started this a month ago and it seemed like a good idea then#and now i just wanna post and be done. stephen baxter don't lead me astray#but imagine heavy teaches everyone and they all chant 'go to hell' before fights#and the other team hears this through the shutters of their base......'boys they're doing that thing again'

Hand in hand, two little boys walk down the dusty Texas backroads.
They’re almost identical, except the boy with the wine colored birthmark across his left cheek has his choppy hair in a tiny braid, while his slightly taller brother, who is like his mirrored opposite, has his dark brown hair hanging loose and messy.
The tiny baby they carry with them, in an old potato sack with straps attached and holes cut in it for his legs, looks almost the same, though his hair curls are different, and his top lip permanently curls up to show his gums and budding little teeth.
Just the three of them are running away from home.
It’s hot, but it’s always that way out here in the middle of nowhere Texas, even in the pitch darkness they’re currently navigating. The twins have grown used to it, their priority mostly giving the baby a bit of water on his head every now and again to keep him cool.
That, and one of them, the twin that walks a little more stiffly, and carries a knife with him everywhere, just in case, his goal is to make sure they aren’t being followed.
Every few feet he turns and walks backwards, looking behind them at the long and dark stretch of road.
“Y-You sure does wor-worry a lot, there Nu-Nubbins.” The shorter brother chimes out of nowhere, though that’s not to say that he’s been quiet before per se. He’s been humming and singing and laughing at nothing the whole way, noises the way he shows his excitement.
The one called Nubbins speaks fast and frantic, like he’s desperate to be understood, “C-C’a’int help it, Bobby. A-Ain’t ya scare..scared?”
“Nope.” Is Bobby’s simple reply, his nose turned up high in the air with confidence that has his brother jogging for a moment to keep up with.
It embarasses Nubbins, to think that maybe he’s the problem. His twin is his idol, and he wants nothing more than to be like him. His little brain rationalizes that there’s got to be a reason why they feel differently, “It’s.. it’s cause you ain’t c-carryin’ the baby.”
But Bobby misunderstands what he means, “Yer’ scared ‘a lit-little B-Bubba?”
Nubbins takes it personally, bad at reading tone, especially over the sound of all the darned cicadas and crickets and katydids chirping away in the fields and trees they walk past.
“I w-wish you weren’t so me-mean to..t-to me.”
And now, caught in a cycle, Bobby takes that personally.
“H-Hey now listen p-pipsqueak. I ain’t mean. I-I’m the best brother. Th-The best.”
If it wasn’t for baby Bubba snoozing on Nubbins’ chest in the homemade bag, he’d have turned and started picking a fight with his brother. Meanness and hatred and spite are all they know. Bloodshed and mayhem and hiding under the bed from their big brother. Squeezing their eyes shut and crying so so quietly while they listen to their twin being beaten just across the room, or down the hall. It didn’t matter. Violence was everywhere.
It’s why they’re leaving now. Nubbins feels kind of bad for thinking about tearing out Bobby’s hair in patches, or biting him on the arm, or kneeing him in the chest over and over and over ‘til he coughed up blood. Actually, really bad.
He looks over at Bobby, with his balled up fists, and reaches out with words, tries to make a connection from a different place, ‘cause he loves his twin. “Can..can you t-tell me what I-I oughta do?”
Bobby doesn’t need guilt to change his mind, he needs to vent. He kicks some dust up and punches the air for a minute, and then he answers all calmly, “‘Bout what?”
“I ‘unno. D-Don’ want Drayton t’ fi..find us.” Nubbins worries aloud. Usually he isn’t this nervous, usually he loves adventures! But this one is extra scary, and they’re only so small, and-
Bobby doesn’t share his fears.
“A-As if! You..You ‘n me both knows ‘at o-old fart won’ e-even know we’re g-gone ‘til tomorrow mor..mornin’ at least.”
“O-Oh alright… But..but if we get in tr-trouble I’m’a gonna be r-real ma-mad at’cha.” Nubbins threatens, a smile growing on his face as relief sets in. If Bobby says things will be okay, then they will. He just knows it.
“Deal.” Bobby agrees to accept his brother's future fury, quickly forgetting the topic and moving on to his next subject of interest, “Gimme..gimme Bubba!”
Happily. Nubbins takes off the makeshift baby carrier and helps his twin get into it, loosening the straps since Bobby’s got slightly bigger shoulders. Drayton always said that he was a parasite and sucked all of Nubbins’ life away when they were in mama’s womb.
Drayton would swear, with his fists or a broomstick raised up over his head, that that’s why he was so weak.
They work together to get the baby carrier in place, by now Bubba awake in there and reaching his chubby little hands up for attention. Bobby heaves him up by his diapered bottom and exclaims, “Shee-oot, B-Bubba’s gettin’ he-heavy!”
It reminds Nubbins of something else their big brother used to say. He was always commenting on Bubba's weight or making mean faces when the baby would steal a little fistful of food. That was always too mean for Nubbins. The baby was just that. A baby! Just a little six month old guy!
He loves him, almost as much as he loves Bobby, and wants to take care of him.
There’s just one problem. “How.. How we gon’ f-feed ‘im?”
Bobby thinks about it, skipping excitedly when an idea hits him, “I-I know! He-He really likes th-them funny lookin’ p-purple berries that grows by.. behind the gas station! O-On them little bush-bushes! A-An’ Drayton’s always s-sayin’ ~get the-them things out yer’ m-mouth boy!~ an’ make-makes Bubba spit em’ out! B-B-But we can fee-feed ‘im as many as..as he wants!!”
All that rambling inspires Nubbins.
They’ve gotten this far, why not! It’s up to them to seize fate and leave behind their isolated farmhouse. They won’t let little Bubba hurt the way they have.
“Y-Yeah alright!! Just.. jus’ gotta f-find some!”
“I-I th-think ther’s some dow-down by the str-stream!!” Bobby remembers, taking his brother by the hand, and taking off running.

I went looking for wild grapes a week or so ago and was devastated when I thought there were none in the spot where I knew there used to be some, even last year. Because grapes can be very invasive and grow super fast, I'm pretty sure that they were cut back (or sprayed with some sort of weed killer) and the vines that grew back were too young for fruit, which has to be to a year or two old.
But success! I found some on accident! Also by train tracks lol
Since wild grapes are so tasty and I feel that everyone should try them if they have the chance. They are more sour, but they have such an intense favor and I love it. The juice stains super easily, including your skin, turning from a bright purple to a blue to a purply gray. unfortunate that the prettier shades can't be dyed (that I know of). It's not at that point in the season yet, but they can ferment on the vine and are quite the surprise if you eat it (the berries will wrinkle). My dad once saw a bird that was presumably drunk on fermented wild grapes.
however, as always when you forage something, you need to be absolutely, 100% certain what you're eating is not a poisonous look alike. The one I run into most often is poke weed which looks like this:
Poke weed berries are POISONOUS. they are identifiable with their pink stems, black shiny berries, and long leaves. In comparison, wild grapes have a "haze" on the skin (which is normal and safe to eat, it's basically natural wax) that can be wiped off, intense blue color, green stem, and the berries are spaced irregularly.
However, there's another much closer look alike (that I haven't seen, but is in many US states and Canada) called Moonseed, which is also very poisonous
These are NOT grapes. since they look practically identical, the best way to tell the difference between the two, you can look at the seeds: moonseed have flat, crescent shaped seeds (middle picture) while grapes have rounder ones. the left picture is a comparison between the two seeds. the leaves also look different. Grape leaves are serrated or toothed with three main points (actually not so different from maple leaves except rounder). Moonseed seems to have a few varieties with different leaves, ranging from heart shaped to closer in shape to grape leaves, but none serrated.
If you really aren't sure, don't eat it. Better to be safe than sorry. I am not a foraging expert, just someone who has been eating wild grapes for many a year.
(one final pic because pretty and it shows the leaves and berries off well)
#me rambling#foraging#ig#wild grapes#i was so disappointed that I couldnt find any grapes the first time around (and tired I did like a 3 mile round trip in heeled boots in 85F#(i could have biked and choose not to for some god forsaken reason)#I was like “whaddya mean there's no grapes???? I found some right here last year!”#my family once picked a five gallon bucket worth of grapes from that spot and it barely put a dent#WHADDYA MEAN THERE'S NONE THERE???#also yes I'm aware that eating something that is literally five feet away from train tracks might pose the risk of contamination#however i 1) don't care tasty grapes 2) haven't died yet 3) microplastics in food and#4) if the pesticides my grandpa sprayed within 20 ft of my house when i was 1-6 y/o have (yet) to show signs of affecting me#surely a couple grapes won't kill me#once again I AM NOT AN EXPERT IN FORAGING I KNOW LIKE THREE PLANTS#i wasn't even aware of moonseed until i looked up any other possible look alikes

“The best way to deal with your anger, aside from good ol’ revenge,” Enzo starts, “is to break shit.”
“When you said we were going to The Breaking Point, I didn’t think you meant it literally,” I say, looking at graffiti scrawled all over the building tucked neatly in an alley.
“Come on, it’s going to be fun,” he says holding my hand and leading me inside.
Once we’ve got our safety gear on, Enzo reaches for the dishes and consecutively throws three plates against the wall. The smashing of plates sounds almost melodic, like wind howling through chimes.
“Stressful week, huh?” I ask him.
“I’m getting my ass handed to me in Potions,” Enzo replies, throwing another plate for good measure.
He hands me a pile, “but never mind that. Your turn. Think of something that angers you, imagine they’re the plate and then throw it.”
I think of Mattheo’s annoying smile and take aim. Crash!
The sound of his laugh. Smash!
Seeing him kiss her. Crash!
I still love him. Smash!
I’m such an idiot. Crash!
I’m out of breath when the final pieces crash on the floor.
⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎
“I haven’t felt this good in weeks!” I exclaim, twirling on the sidewalk as we make our way to dinner. I ignore the curious glances I attract and walk ahead, beaming.
Enzo laughs, “told you, I’ve got ways to help you release stress—”
“Without being a perv,” I finish his sentence.
“Not what I was going to say, but okay,” he muses.
“You winked at me! It’s your fault I assumed, Lorenzo Berkshire” I glare at him.
He raises his hands to concede. “Fine fine, but never call my by my full name again. You’re scary,” he shudders.
“Tell me more about Potions,” I say, tamping down my smile.
“I’ve been having a hard time memorizing the right ingredients. I keep mixing up horse hair and horseradish, or moondew and moonseed. Why do they have to sound so similar?” he explains, running a hand through his hair in exasperation.
“That sucks, I can see why it can be confusing,” I say, fixing his hair absentmindedly.
“I can help you study!” I offer.
He smirks, “you know, Mattheo and I compete with grades. He may be naturally smarter and doesn’t have to apply himself as much, I’ll give him that. But I work hard and even skipped a grade because of it. It’s how we’re in the same grade even though I’m younger and I’ve been lording it over him ever since. But Potions…”
I see where he’s going. “Potions is a nightmare. So by studying together, you’ll get better grades and outrank Mattheo again. Even more incentive to help, fake boyfriend. Let’s make that phase two of The Book.”
I grab his arm and see him smiling down at me. “Let’s study at your dorm next week, it’s gonna be fun!”
“Why not at the library so people can see us?” He asks, quirking an eyebrow.
“Because my ways are not allowed at the library, it’s loud but fun,” I say.
“Oh?” He asks with a devilish smile.
“I did not wink at you, Berkshire! I didn’t mean it that way,” I smack his arm.
He laughs, “I’ve never heard the term ‘fun’ and ‘studying’ in the same sentence, but if anyone can do it, it’s probably you.”
⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎
“Have you ever heard of mnemonics?” I ask Enzo.
“Stop making up words.”
“I’m not! Mnemonics is a way we can memorize things through key phrases and words. Okay, so look at this,” I open a Potions textbook to one of the instructions.
“Felix felicis, liquid luck. To create this, you need ashwinder egg, horseradish and heat. No horse hair here. To make it easy to remember, use the phrase “ashes take root in the heat.”
“How does that make it easier?”
“The key word you need to remember is ashes. What do they do? They take root in the heat. Ash is short for ashwinder egg and next time you’re confused between horse hair or horseradish, remember which one is the root vegetable?”
“Horseradish!” He exclaims. “Ashes take root in the heat. You make this so much easier! Why can’t you be our Potions professor instead?” “Snape would have your head if he hears you,” I say. “But wait, we haven’t got to the fun part yet. Once you have your phrase, you then have to turn it into a song.”
Enzo laughs indulgently, “like one of those children shows?”
“You laugh at my methods, Berkshire. But it won’t be so silly once you’re exceeding expectations in class. You gotta trust the process.”
“Does the process know we’re trusting it?” He quips.
“Isn’t it so much easier memorizing song lyrics than class notes?” I retort. He nods, considering me.
“Come on, Enzo. We can even sing it to the tune of your favorite song.” He gives me a pained look but gives in and hours go by, we have our key phrases and songs that go with potion ingredients and techniques.
Laughing, Enzo takes my hand and lifts me off the chair, spinning me around. “We’ve done the singing, now let’s dance.”
“But there’s no music,” I comment as my cheeks flush when I feel his hands on waist, inviting me to sway with him.
“Move with me,” he says, “we can use this as practice for when we attend a ball.”
I close my eyes and imagine music as I follow his steps, trying to avoid stepping on his foot. His hands feel strong and reassuring, guiding me as he hums a soft tune. We move in comfortable silence and I relax into the moment.
“You did well today,” I tell him as he spins me again and he bows, marking the end of the dance.
“Only because I had a fantastic teacher,” he remarks. “I’ll definitely outrank Mattheo with you by my side.”
“What’s the deal with you and Mattheo, anyway? Why are you rivals?” I ask.
“It’s therapy time, huh?” He says, settling in his bed and I sit beside him. He takes a moment, turning the question over in his mind. “It started when we were kids, our mother would have us play these games to see who bested each other. Did you know, we even competed to see who’d eat the most vegetables during dinner?”
“Well…” I say, bewildered. “That’s one way to get you to eat healthy, I guess?”
“We didn’t grow up in the same household, of course,” he continues. “So I only knew him through the occasional awkward family dinner. But our mother, if you scored better grades or won some contest, that’s when she would come visit and spend time with whoever won. We’ve been that way ever since,” he shrugs.
“You realize that’s not normal, right?” I ask.
“Is any family even normal?” He counters.
“No, family dynamics are weird. Mine isn’t any better,” I agree. “I just mean that you don’t have to compete for love. Someone can love you exactly as you are, you don’t have to earn it. That’s what my mother used to say” I explain.
He looks at my eyes, speechless and searching.
“You know that, right?” I try. Of course he doesn’t. “You don’t have to try hard to be loved.”
We sit in electric silence as he shifts his gaze down my mouth before meeting my eyes again. I want to hold this boy with sad eyes, so warm and full of life, but alone here in the privacy of his room it will be real.
“It’s getting late and Theo will be back soon from the party.” I clear my throat and brush off these feelings, whatever they are. I rise from his bed and take my things. “This was productive, let’s do it again tomorrow.”
He blinks, shaking off the moment. “Of course, yeah. Thank you.”
Enzo walks me to the door and bids me good night.
“Good night,” I reply, rising on my toes to kiss his cheek.
I walk back to my dorm and glance at my watch. It’s much later than I thought. I briefly pause when a voice interrupts my thoughts.
“If cuddling is the best part, he didn't do it right.” I look up and see Mattheo watching me come from the direction of Enzo’s dorm.
My annoyance flares, “Why hello to you too, Mattheo. Don’t you have some girl to disappoint?”
“Oh I never disappoint in bed,” he says with a smirk and I look at his dark eyes, remembering heated nights and all the ways I’ve come undone for him and with him. Memories of warm skin tangled in sheets, moaning messes, and the euphoric maze we lost and found ourselves in.
I shake my head and sigh, “do what you want, Riddle. It’s what you’re good at anyway.”
That shuts him up and I walk past him.
⭐︎⭐︎⭐︎
The next few weeks go by and Enzo and I get into a comfortable rhythm studying together. We spend meal times together at the Great Hall and visit Hogsmeade on weekends in the name of fake dating.
I approach Enzo as students file out the room from Potions class.
“Look here,” he beams, showing me his grade.
“Exceeds expectations! You did it, Enzo!” I engulf him in a hug and laugh in surprise as he twirls me around before setting me down.
He looks at Mattheo making his way to the exit and calls out, “not that I need a number to prove I’m better than you, brother, but it seems the numbers have spoken again.”
Mattheo pauses and looks back, “is it really a win, brother, if you needed someone’s help to get there?” He looks at me and raises an eyebrow.
Enzo puts his arm around me. “You mean, I get to outrank you, after skipping a grade by the way. And I have an incredible girlfriend by my side? I don’t see what the problem is.”
I step in, “Well Enzo, not everyone knows what they have when they have it.” I shift my gaze to Mattheo, “Matheo wouldn’t understand, now would you?” I shake my head condescendingly.
“Come on, we have to celebrate!” I wink at Enzo and he grins at our inside joke as we walk out.
When we reach the hallway, he leans in to whisper, “you winked! Are we really going to celebrate?”
I smack his arm and whisper back, “that was just for The Book. Behave.”
“Okay, just checking. Because you know I wouldn’t mind at all if—” I glare at him and he holds his hands up in retreat.
I soften, “You can, however, get a congratulatory kiss.” I pull my arms around his shoulders and kiss him. He smiles against my lips.

Author's note: I recently went to a similar place where I got to break stuff and I knew these characters had to do it too. I nearly named this chapter "break plates, not hearts" hahahaha.
Oh and Mattheo’s first line comes directly from an episode of Veronica Mars iykyk.

I'll Love You 'til the Grass Around My Gravestone is Deceased
harry potter timeline sirius black x fem!reader
CHAPTER TEN (see full series list here)
1993
"Now, the mean temperature on Venus is four-hundred and sixty-two degrees celsius, making it hotter than Mercury, despite it being further from the Sun. Can anyone tell me why?"
Your third-years look around the room at each other uncertainly. You have them sitting down at desks as you teach some theory to them.
"Is it just...'cause it is?" Ron guesses, and Harry snorts beside him, earning a dirty look off Ron.
"A perfectly vague answer, Mr Weasley," you reply. "You should consider becoming a politician."
You glance expectedly at Hermione, who has fallen asleep, head held up by her right hand. Lavender Brown pokes her and Hermione wakes with a start, blurting out, "G — greenhouse effect!"
You nod, turning back to your blackboard. "Yes...the greenhouse effect. There's an incredibly high concentration of carbon dioxide in Venus' atmosphere, which produces the greenhouse effect. All the heat gets trapped in the atmosphere, like a blanket, and makes it unbearably hot." You glance back at Hermione again, adding, "Ms Granger, please see me after class."
You continue on and later, when the class ends and the last of the students are filtering out, Hermione approaches your desk nervously.
"Professor, please, I didn't mean to fall asleep! Please don't be angry, I didn't — "
"Hermione," you say gently, gesturing to the seat in front of your desk. "Sit, please. I'm not angry with you at all, relax."
Hermione relaxes slightly, taking the seat in front of you.
"How many classes are you taking, Hermione?"
She bites her lip. "Thirteen, Professor."
You're quite taken aback at this. "Thirteen?"
"Y — yes, Professor."
You sigh. "Hermione, your workload is far too much for a young girl to handle. Far too much for anyone to handle! It's not good for you — how are you even getting to all these classes on time?"
"My — um, my timetable was fixed by Professor McGonagall..."
You shake your head. "Please, Hermione. All this is clearly taking a toll on your health. Why, the last essay you turned into me was about Arithmancy."
Hermione's eyes go wide. "Oh, no! That means I gave Professor Vector my Astronomy one, oh my goodness — she's going to be so mad with me."
"I'll talk to her," you say reassuringly. "For now, Hermione, I want to see you go straight back to your dorm and sleep. And you are not to attend your next Astronomy class."
"But, Professor — "
"Hermione," you say sternly. "I don't want to see you in my next class. You won't miss anything important, I promise. I want you to use that time to rest, please. Now, straight to bed with you."
"Professor..."
"Goodnight, Ms Granger," you say and she reluctantly stands. "And if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask me. Anything at all. I'd be happy to help."
Hermione gives you a small, tired smile. "Thank you, Professor."
"Goodnight."

On a Saturday, when most of the students have gone to Hogsmeade, you sit in Remus' office, drinking tea and snacking on a few cupcakes Bitsy made you.
"How's the potion treating you?" You ask casually, taking a bite out of another sweet cupcake.
Remus grimaces, eyeing the empty goblet on the corner of his desk. "It's rancid. But it works, so I shan't complain."
"What's even in it?"
"Well, Wolfsbane, of course..moonseed, dittany — "
You gag. "Gross."
He hums. "Exactly."
"Lupin! I want a word!" Comes the voice of Snape from Remus' fireplace suddenly, along with his angry face. "And bring her with you!"
You glance at Remus in confusion and he just shrugs, before you both step into the fireplace and clamber out of the other end in Snape's office. You brush ash off your jumper, scowling at Snape and then noticing Harry.
"You called, Severus?" Remus says mildly.
"I certainly did," Snape says, face contorted in fury as he returns to his desk. "I have just asked Potter to empty his pockets. He was carrying this."
Mr Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business.
He points at a piece of parchment in front of him, laid flat on the desk. Inked upon it, are four sentences:
Mr Prongs agrees with Mr Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.
Mr Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a Professor.
Well, fuck.
Mr Wormtail bids Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.
You do your best not to laugh and keep your expression as blank as possible. Those boys, no matter what, will always find a way to send Snape an 'up yours' in some shape or form.
"Well?" says Snape, scowling.
You stare at the parchment, mind running. "This seems to be a very...childish slip of parchment."
"Childish?" Snape repeats. "This parchment is plainly full of Dark Magic. This is supposed to be your area of expertise, Lupin. Where do you imagine Potter got such a thing?"
Remus sends you the tiniest, near-imperceptible glance and you look straight ahead, boring holes into the parchment.
"Full of Dark Magic?" he says mildly. "Do you really think so, Severus? It looks to me as though it is merely a piece of parchment that insults anybody who tries to read it. Childish, but surely not dangerous? I imagine Harry got it from a joke-shop — "
"Indeed?" Snape's jaw is rigid with anger. "You don't think a joke-shop could supply him with such a thing? You don't think it more likely that he got it directly from the manufacturers?"
You cough lightly. "Hardly. Harry, surely you wouldn't be too keen to take something from someone named Wormtail, would you?"
"No," Harry says quickly.
"You see, Severus?" says Remus. "It looks like a Zonko's product to me — "
As if he was waiting for his moment outside the door the entire time, Ron Weasley bursts through Snape's door, red-faced and breathless.
"I — gave — Harry — that — stuff," he wheezes. "Bought — it — in — Zonko's — ages — ago..."
"Well!" Remus says cheerfully, clapping his hands together and giving you a happy grin. "That seems to clear that up! Severus, I'll take this back, shall I?" He grabs the map, folding it up and tucking it inside his robes. "Harry, Ron, come with me. I need a word about my vampire essay."
"Oh, I also need to discuss your star charts!" You blurt out, smiling at the two young boys.
"Excuse us, Severus," Remus says, and the four of you leave the office and walk in silence all the way back into the Entrance Hall before speaking.
Harry glances nervously between the two of you, starting, "I — "
"I don't want to hear explanations," Remus says shortly. He glances around the empty Entrance Hall, lowering his voice. "I happen to know that this map was confiscated by Mr Filch many years ago. Yes, I know it's a map," he says, and you take in Harry and Ron's amazed faces.
"I don't want to know how it fell into your possession," he continues. "I am, however, astounded that you didn't hand it in. Particularly after what happened the last time a student left information about the castle lying around. And I can't let you have it back, Harry."
"Why did Snape think I'd got it from the manufacturers?" Harry questions.
Remus hesitates. "Because — um..."
"They're a bunch of gits who'd have loved to put you in danger," you finish.
Remus frowns at you and you shrug.
"Do you know them?" Harry says, seeming impressed.
"We've met," Remus tells him curtly. He's got that extremely serious Remus expression on his face that he used to get during exam season, when he'd act like he wanted to study but really he didn't.
"Don't expect us to cover for you again, Harry," he says sternly. "I cannot make you take Sirius Black seriously."
If it wasn't for his grave tone, you would laugh at that.
"But I would have thought that what you have heard when the Dementors draw near you would have had more of an effect on you. Your parents gave their lives to keep you alive, Harry. A poor way to repay them — gambling their sacrifice for a bag of magic tricks."
You're surprised at his last words, but can barely comment on them because he's spun on his heel and headed in the opposite direction. You catch up to him as he enters his office, throwing the map down on his desk with a sigh.
"Jeez, Moony, that was a bit harsh," you mutter and he nods grimly.
"I know, I know...but it's the only way to make him realise the severity of this situation."
You stare idly at the folded parchment on his desk. "So, what, Harry nicked the map from Filch's?"
"I suppose so," Remus answers. "We are lucky to have caught it."
"And, Merlin, that charm...Snape looked like he wanted to rip your head off."
"I'm aware. I...I don't remember writing that," he says abashedly.
You chuckle. "It was brilliant. Absolutely bloody brilliant."

It's not long before the Quidditch Cup Final arrives, and the tensions are high in the castle between Gryffindor and Slytherin. There's been more than one occasion where you've had to break up scraps between students, deducting a few points from each house.
The match falls on a beautifully sunny day and you sit in the stands, watching the Gryffindor team elatedly dance around in celebration, hoisting the Cup into the air enthusiastically. They're all smiles and happy faces and it warms your heart to see.
It reminds you of the time Gryffindor won the Quidditch Cup during your sixth year at Hogwarts.
♡*。♡*。
1997
You clutch the megaphone in your hand tightly, leaning forward to watch the match.
"GRYFFINDOR'S RYDER IN POSSESSION AND SHE'S GONE!" you cry. "SHE'S BOMBED THROUGH THE AIR AND OH, HERE COMES LEVINSON FOR THE CHALLENGE...PASS TO BURNS, BURNS SHOOTS...SCORE! TEN-ZERO TO GRYFFINDOR!"
The Gryffindor side of the stands erupts into cheers and Burns grins proudly. You spot James Potter ambling around the air on his broomstick, his eyes dancing around the pitch in search of the Golden Snitch. Slytherin's Seeker, Regulus Black, is watching James closely, waiting for any slight movement to indicate that he's seen it.
"SLYTHERIN IN POSSESSION AND IT'S MALFOY..." you gag dramatically, earning a glare from Professor McGonagall beside you. "MALFOY PASSES TO LEVINSON...LEVINSON TO PHILLIPS, PHILLIPS JUST BARELY DODGES A WELL-PLACED BLUDGER FROM GRYFFINDOR'S BLACK...he's quite handsome too — "
"Focus on the game!"
"Right, yeah — got it, Professor!" you grin at her and she sighs. You glance down at Sirius, who sends a wink in your direction and you blow a kiss back.
Then, movement on the side of the pitch catches your eye: Slytherin Captain, Lynx Phillips, has just punched Gryffindor Captain, Ryan Carr, who launches his Beater's Bat right back at him, clocking him in the jaw. Madam Hooch blows her whistle furiously and zooms over to them, an enraged look on her face.
"PENALTY, PROFESSOR! THAT'S A PENALTY RIGHT THERE!"
"Penalty to Gryffindor for an unprovoked attack on their Beater! Penalty to Slytherin for an attack on their chaser!"
Ryder flies up to the Slytherin goal to take a shot.
"COME ON, RINA...YES! SHE SCORES! TWENTY-ZERO TO GRYFFINDOR!"
Next, Levinson comes to take the Slytherin penalty, scowling at Gryffindor's Keeper, Fleming.
"FLEMING'LL SAVE THIS ONE, NO DOUBT...WELL, OKAY, MALFOY CLEARLY SABOTAGED THAT ONE. TWENTY-TEN TO GRYFFINDOR!"
Time passes, scores ticking up on both sides. Everyone is on the edge of their seats, waiting in anticipation for each blow.
"HERE GOES PHILLIPS WITH THE QUAFFLE...HIT BY GRYFFINDOR BEATER SIRIUS BLACK ONCE AGAIN! YAXLEY DROPS THE QUAFFLE AND IT'S INTERCEPTED BY RYDER AND SHE'S GONE — WAIT, WHERE THE FUCK DID SHE GO? I'M AFTER LOSING HER — AND SHE SCORES! ONE-HUNDRED- EIGHTY TO GRYFFINDOR!"
"Language!"
"YEAH, SORRY, PROFESSOR...BUT IT LOOKS LIKE GRYFFINDOR SEEKER, JAMES POTTER, HAS SPOTTED THE SNITCH! SLYTHERIN'S BLACK IS TRAILING CLOSE BEHIND..."
James bolts through the air, heading towards the Gryffindor goals where he's spotted the Snitch. Regulus is barely an inch behind him, hot in his heels.
"FASTER, JAMES, HE'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!"
Finally, James is upon the Snitch and he clasps it in his right hand and raises it triumphantly. The crowd explodes. Gryffindor flags are waved like mad and McGonagall cheers excitedly beside you.
"WOO! JAMES POTTER HAS CAUGHT THE SNITCH, ENDING THE GAME TWO-HUNDRED AND FIFTY TO NINETY AND WINNING GRYFFINDOR THE QUIDDITCH CUP!"
The Gryffindors collide with each other mid-air, and you watch as Sirius and James throw their arms around each other, landing quickly and jumping up and down elatedly. You quickly drop the megaphone, jumping out of your seat and running down the stairs towards the pitch. You sprint out along with all the other Gryffindor supporters.
Everyone is cheering and shouting in the middle of the pitch and you stop just beside Sirius. He notices you and beams, his handsome face lighting up, and he detangles himself from James to throw his arms around you. You kiss him and he lifts you up to spin you around, making you giggle in delight. Eventually he sets you down.
"You were brilliant!" You exclaim. "You did so well, Siri — "
He kisses you again, and you can feel him smile against your lips. You pull away and grin at each other, before finally you let go of him and hug James.
"Not too bad, Potter!" You say with a laugh, ruffling his hair good-naturedly.
"We won the Cup!" He shouts happily, unable to quench the huge grin stretching his face.
"We won the Cup!" You repeat, grinning just as enthusiastically back at him.
You hug everyone in sight, giving Remus, Peter, Alice, and Lily especially tight ones and by the end of it you're bouncing on your toes in happiness.
It can't get any better than this, can it?
♡*。♡*。
Exam season starts and there's a hush around the castle. You watch as your third-years filter into the Astronomy Tower looking especially nervous. Hermione Granger has her eyes closed and is reciting the names of Saturn's moons to herself — somehow managing to remember all one-hundred and forty-six. You're amazed at that really, but feel bad because she only needed to know one.
"Okay, everyone. Please take a seat and start filling out the papers in front of you. There's four questions on it. When you've finished, go to a telescope and I'll give you three constellations to chart. Best of luck everyone!"
The students sit down at the desks, and start filling out the papers in front of them. After a minute, Ron Weasley is already scratching his head at the first question; Hermione Granger has already managed to reach the end of the parchment; and Harry Potter is just blankly staring at it.
Later, Hermione springs out of her chair and you ask her for three constellations, which she charts very neatly and accurately.
It's not long before their time is up and they all leave the Tower, and you're stuck with a stack of parchment to work through.

Part 4 - One and the Same
As the weeks passed and the weather in late October turned colder, the halls and chambers in Hogwarts stayed warm. It also seemed that somebody specific had warmed up around you as well. Tom didn’t ignore you anymore. Not completely at least. He was still distant, but that was probably just how he was. Progress, still. Camille was sure he liked you, even if he didn’t show it. Although you didn't entirely agree with her, it was definitely a start.
He must have been impressed by your potions skills. His demeanour had changed ever since you beat him making Moonseed Poison. In fact, you had lost count of how many times you had thought about that smirk on his face and how your stomach seemed to flip whenever you did. It was almost embarrassing how many times you started daydreaming, how your mind wanted to drift off, and you let it.
You had just thought of him when you walked along the shore of the Black Lake alone. Since Avery and Lestrange hadn’t dared to even look at you for more than a moment, it was safe enough to wander around on your own again. And it was freeing to have time for yourself. To manage your thoughts in peace, while the wind howled across the water to keep you company.
Your thoughts were interrupted by someone calling out your name and hasty footsteps coming your way from behind. You stopped and turned around to see who it was. Benjamin Hilt. The Gryffindor boy from sixth year, who had already asked too many questions.
He was quite short for a boy of his age, but it seemed like he didn’t care about it. He didn’t care about a lot of things apparently. He wore jeans a lot. A clothing item wizards would usually not choose as their attire since it was such a muggle thing to wear. Maybe it was his way of revolting the system. A very subliminal way of showing his values. His hair must have also been part of that. That, or he didn’t own a comb.
Not that he was unpopular, he definitely had friends. They were all like him to an extent. Loud, candid and sometimes a bit scandalising. They liked to be the centre of attention, even if that meant they would go on everyone’s nerves. They were troublemakers, but harmless overall.
“Hey,” he said, a bit out of breath once he caught up.
“Hi Ben,” you answered and started walking again.
“Can I walk with you for a minute?”
“Sure. Did you come up with more questions for your investigation?”
He kept quiet for a moment and you grinned while looking out over the lake, where the tiniest waves rustled in the wind.
“No,” he then said. “I mean, yes. I mean… Possibly.”
“What’s your deal, Ben?” you asked. “Not to be mean, but none of this is any of your business.”
“I know. And I’m sorry. But I just can’t wrap my head around this. It kind of keeps me up at night. Doesn’t sit right with me.”
“Well if it doesn’t sit right with you, then, of course, we’re going to listen to you and throw all plans out of the window.”
“Don’t be sarcastic now. It’s a serious thing.”
“Oh really? Thanks for reminding me. Still none of your concern. And even if it was. What doesn’t sit right?”
“Two things actually,” Ben answered. “Firstly, I still don’t believe that you’re doing this of your own free will. I think he’s forcing you to marry him. And secondly, with your two families combined, Tom and his relatives will be given a whole new level of respect. And power.”
“So?”
“So? Don’t act like you don’t know what the Gaunts are all about.”
Of course you knew. Everyone did. And Ben was probably right. But what should you do about it now?
“Look, Ben,” you sighed. “I’m thankful for your concern, really. But it wasn’t forced. Tom and I… We love each other. And I’m afraid you don’t know him or any of his relatives as well as you think. They’re not seeking power. Or anything of that sort.”
Never before had you lied to someone like this. Twisted the truth a bit, yes. Kept some information secret, yes. But this was the greatest lie that ever left your mouth. And Ben knew.
“Alright,” he said slowly and raised his eyebrows. “The Gaunts are dangerous, whether you believe it or not. Who knows what they’re capable of when they get even more respected in the wizard community? I thought you weren’t like them, you know. But seems like you’re one and the same.”
It was better not to answer him right now because all you could have produced were curse words. Maybe you were like them. But what did Benjamin Hilt, self-proclaimed rescuer, know about any of it? You had your reasons and you weren’t going to share them with him. Who did he think he was?
“I see you don’t want my help,” he said. “Just know, you can always ask for it when you change your mind.”
Then he walked off. It was infuriating. Not that you had anything else to say, but the mere fact that he thought he knew better than everyone else turned your insides sour. So much that you wanted to scream. But he would have heard you. So you kept quiet and walked for a little longer.
One and the same. Sure. Like one of the Gaunts would do anything remotely similar to what you had done for your sister. What an idiot. And even if you accepted his help. What would he be able to do for you? Nothing. One and the same. If people wanted to see you like that, they should. But then, they should be as afraid of you as they were of Tom.
Elsie and your parents crossed your mind. They had sent a letter some days ago. Finally. A reason to keep going. To keep the facade. Saying that you hadn’t thought about quitting would be a lie. Now that your sister was better, you had gathered that there would be a way leading you out of the pact. But the letter reminded you there wasn’t one. And what you did it for. Who you did it for. You took it out of your pocket and read it again.
“Dearest daughter,
we are delighted to let you know Elsie is doing much better. The Gaunts were a tremendous help. Morfin brewed several potions and one of them seemed to be the cure. Her cough stopped immediately and she is on the mend.
She is finally eating again, she even wanted to help the elves make lunch yesterday.
I think she also grew half an inch over the last week.
It is an incredible joy to watch her laughing again. We wish you could see her now.
And we want to let you know, again, how thankful we are for what you did. Without you, Merlin knows what would have happened. We are so proud of you.
However, Marvolo informed us that they haven’t broken the curse entirely.
He said if there will be any kind of breach or breaking of the pact, they can make Elsie sick again. And that it would be worse than before.
We hope you know what that means and what is expected of you. We wish we could take that burden from you.
All the best,
Mum and Dad”
There was a little red heart scribbled at the bottom right corner of the letter, that Elsie had drawn. It made you smile each time you saw it and reminded you of the countless times you had sat with her in the garden, where you had watched her draw random figures and shapes. She would always get angry when your drawings came out better than hers. But she never gave up trying. And you couldn’t give up trying either.
The sun went down earlier each day now, so you went back to the castle once you had walked off the anger in your bones.
Tom sat there in the courtyard. He was alone for a change. Even though he didn’t talk much, he was usually with at least two other people, who competed for his attention. But not today.
“Hello,” you said and he nodded as you sat down at the stone bench next to him. “What are you up to?”
He looked at you for a moment, then leant forward and gazed into the distance. “Thinking.”
“Me too.”
“Really?” he asked, an unusual tone of sarcasm in his voice.
“What do you mean ‘really’?”
“It didn’t seem like you thought of much when you were walking with Hilt.”
“Ben? Did you see us? Hang on. Did you watch me?”
“Does it matter? I just happened to take a walk towards the lake. Then I saw you two.”
“Okay,” you said. “Well, next time feel free to join in. Anything to keep him away. Ben gets on my nerves, you know.”
“Sure,” he said, still not looking at you.
What was his problem now? He couldn't seriously be jealous just because you were out walking with someone. “I mean it,” you said. “I’ve just told him to get off my back.”
“Do you think I’m stupid?” he asked.
“What? No. I’m just trying-”
“Listen! If you’re going to be my wife, you must not give the impression of being unfaithful.”
“And being unfaithful means walking with anyone that isn’t you?”
“You know what it means.”
“So I’m not allowed to talk to friends?”
“I thought he wasn’t your friend.”
“He isn’t. This is not about Ben but in general.”
Tom stayed silent.
“You can’t be serious,” you said. “What do you expect me to do? Only ever speak to you, even if other people approach me? I didn’t even invite him. He just happened to be there all of a sudden.”
Tom turned towards you again and came uncomfortably close.
“I. Don’t. Care. I expect you to be loyal.”
“I am,” you said but he stood up and left. “Wait! You can’t just walk away.”
But he went. You ran after him, your frustration banging from inside your head against your temples. When you entered the hallways, quite a few people were around, some of them already looking at you.
There he was, still walking away. You finally reached Tom and grabbed him by the shoulder, to make him look at you. He stopped abruptly and turned around, quicker than you had thought, so you almost bumped into him. A second of silence and staring occurred before you took a step back. Okay. Now was the time to get your point across.
“Listen,” you said quietly. “I don’t know what you think you saw, but I guarantee you that’s not what happened.”
“I know wh-”
“No, I said listen to me,” you interrupted him more vehemently and people’s heads turned your way, so you kept your voice low again. “Ben is not my friend. He came up to talk to me about us. I think he knows about the pact. And he wants to ruin everything. I’m not going to lose my sister because of him. So I tried to convince him. And if you think that’s being disloyal then so it be. I don’t care either. But never run away from me when I want to explain myself. And never distrust me again for no reason.”
That was the first time you witnessed Tom Riddle being speechless. So you left him standing there without another word. If people wanted to believe you were one and the same, you would make him believe it too.
