Semi-Formal Outfit Inspired by Mick St. John
Tumblr media
Inspired by Mick's semi-formal outfit in 1x02 "Out of the Past". The shoes are Jimmy Choo, and the purse is Michael Kors. The jewelry is vintage white gold.

Same about the whole Mick calling himself a monster thing. He does it in eps 1 and 3, too.
I love Mick 70s-80s style, too. I like his how he dressed in present-day (present at the time it was filmed), too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also wish we had more Bobby scenes.
I had the same thought about the 25 year old bottle.
I never noticed the lemons and apples, or at least I never acknowledged them. But he does have a coffee maker and coffee because he makes some for Beth and Josh. I also assumed it was for clients.
Lee Jay is the worst.
I love Josef's casual style, too. It's not a far cry from Mick's casual style. (See gifs above).
Now that I think about it, it is pretty funny that Beth barely knows Mick but trusts him anyway and is willing to risk everything for him.
I also assumed he robbed a blood bank. Or he maybe he had emergency packs in his car or something.
I have a headcanon that he called Josef after Beth presumably runs off after finding out he's a vampire.
Mick in that final scene made my heart physically hurt. The way he is hunched over himself and staggering out of the elevator shows the agony that he must be in. The scene made me hurt not just because of his obvious physical pain but also because of the shame in his body language and his voice when Beth came into the room. Alex's acting here is 💯 Oscar worthy.
I love Josef's protectiveness and tough love in this episode.
There is a goof in the scene where Lee Jay shoots Mick. We see Mick get shot in the front of one shoulder, but when he turns and falls onto his front, the holes are on the opposite shoulder.
Moonlight rewatch for millionth time
Episode 2 random thoughts and feelings I had while rewatching again: cause I’m bored and have nothing else to do or watch. And I love this show
Mick: monsters don’t get happy ever after. Me: Stop saying you’re a monster! Stop it now
Tumblr media
I like Mick’s early 80’s look, it had a 1970ish vibe to it
I know Mick probably panicked but he should have just snapped Lee Jays neck before running off
I like how Beth’s like talk about my feelings? No I’d rather get to work bye lol same girl
I think I’ve said it before but I think Beth purposely picked out a 25 year old single malt to maybe catch Mick in a lie or maybe get some sort of reaction from him
I wish we got more Bobby scenes
My head canon is that Logan and Mick met over World or Warcraft and Mick beat Logan who then threatened Mick (think end game with Thor) and Mick was like oh okay I’m so scared then Logan hacked him and went to his place and was like oh shit my bad uh friends? When he realized Mick was also a vampire
I love him but Mick really needs to think things through before he acts
Ilene deserved better I’m glad she gets justice in the end
Lee Jay in fact did not understand
Mick says vampires don’t have a club house that they hang out at and yet we have this episode where we have vampires at a club that has freshies then several episodes later another club where they all play pool. So what’s the difference?
I never noticed this before but Mick had random lemons in his fridge
Tumblr media
There’s like four or five of them in there. It’s most likely for clients that come over but he also has green apples in there too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lee Jay is the worst
Tumblr media
I like Josef’s casual style in the way that something about it still feels very expensive and true to Josef’s personality
I like how Beth is a ride or die when it comes to Mick. She’s only known him a week but she’s already willing to break the law and go against her boyfriend and friend to help prove his innocence
I wonder what happened to Julia after this episode, I’m sure she went to therapy for everything that happened but it’s just strange we never see her again especially when Josh died
Is it bad that when Mick is running and jumping on the rooftop that StarWars bad lip reading of Yoda singing “now run jump” etc etc was playing in my head? Lol
Where did Mick get that blood packet from and why didn’t he get help for the silver buckshots in his body? Did he just rob a blood bank ? Because I highly doubt Guillermo would let his friend go off on his own in such a vulnerable situation
I like how they didn’t drag out the vampire secret for very long. Sometimes I feel like when writers and directors drag things out like that for too long it becomes a bit stale once things are actually revealed

ROUND 1A, MATCH 7
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Descriptions/Propaganda under the cut:
Introducing Louis to vampirism (1x02)
The beginning of 1x02 shows Lestat introducing Louis to life as a vampire. A giddy Louis watches Lestat hide the bodies of the priests, Lestat's blood giving the newly-turned vampire a high. Lestat then guides Louis through the streets, Louis' heightened senses confusing him as Lestat leads him into a bar. The pair hunt, Lestat choosing a tractor salesman for them both, despite Louis initially wishing for a rowdy sailor. Disgusted with himself after killing the tractor salesman, Louis flees outside into the early morning sunlight and badly burns himself before returning to Lestat and the Rue Royale. This scene introduces the maker-fledgling dynamic that haunts Louis and Lestat's relationship throughout season one and reveals Lestat's more humorous and dramatic personality. "Oh yes... [New Orleans is] the perfect setting for a vampire home. A vampire romance."

Armand's backstory monologue (2x04)
Armand takes Louis to an art gallery after the outburst at the restaurant. He leads Louis to a specific painting, 'Adoration of the Shepherds with a Donor' by Palma Vecchio, a contemporary of Armand's maker, Marius de Romanus. The painting features one particular figure that Armand identifies as 'Amadeo.' Armand describes his life as a human as the life of 'Amadeo', looking steadfastly at the painting, Louis behind him, watching with Dreamstat by his side. Like reading facts from a label next to the painting, Armand recounts how he was sold into slavery by his parents, taken from the brothel by Marius, sexually used while under Marius' protection and turned only when he became ill. The monologue reveals Armand's deep issues relating to identity, a man named 'Arun,' then 'Amadeo' and finally 'Armand' who was repeatedly used by others for whatever they wished of him. The scene is scored by the beautiful 'Amadeo' by Daniel Hart, featuring repeated broken chords on the piano, which mirror Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata from 1x07, and melody on the cor anglais. "Who am I, Louis? Am I my history I have endured? Am I the job I do not want? I do not know anymore. No one has painted me in over four hundred years."

2. a man seeks out help to get his husband to cry
akdnskdnsnd this one is fitting since the idea kind of came about while rewatching 1x02 together, but this is my tk-gets-advice-from-grace-re: their traumatized-grieving-husbands fic! i really just want to explore the parallels of these two relationships and the potentials of the friendship between grace and tk <3
a tiny tiny tense snippet:
“You can’t ignore it.”
The words seem to ring in the loft, a heavy silence falling over them the moment TK’s mouth snaps shut. Carlos’ eyes shine bright, glinting in the sliver of moonlight that cuts across the room.

what he says and what he doesn’t
No one who’s been here for a while should be surprised that yes, of course Dragons is going to write meta about a one minute long clip, so let’s talk about “Moonlight” Rayllum angst 2 electric boogaloo. Clip here for anyone who has not had their heart torn out by it I mean, seen it yet.
So we knew this scene existed from the 4x01 twitter thread at San Diego Comic Con in July, but now we have the full dialogue and well, context of it all. With this meta I want to talk about 1) the context it gives to a casual (non-TTM reading) audience, 2) how it stands up with other Callum closing scenes for seasonal conflict, and 3) what’s changed in Callum’s behaviour and responses and what hasn’t.
The first (and in some ways most important) thing from a textual analysis is that this is the introduction of Rayla’s absence in the season. For casual viewers who haven’t read Through The Moon, Rayla’s absence in the first episode will stick out like a sore thumb, but not without a plethora of explanations. Maybe she went back to Xadia and she and Callum are doing long distance. Maybe she’s off doing something plot related and will be back soon. Seeing Callum be dejected on his birthday and slip away for some privacy, under the light of the moon no less, these are easy enough things to piece together. One of the people he loves the most isn’t here, and that would be enough to make anyone a bit bummed out on their special day.
But we quickly learn that more than that is fundamentally wrong. Keep in mind that since meeting in 1x02, Callum and Rayla have been together side by side in every episode and barring that, never apart for more than one or not in the same space. They’re the dynamic singlehandedly most developed by the series in virtue of sheer screen time, and for the first time, we see that they’re separated.
Callum’s body language and expression as Ezran approaches, reminiscent of when he first learned about Harrow, makes it clear that Callum is very much not doing okay, even if he says otherwise.
Tumblr media
E: You doing okay? C: Yeah.
But this isn’t too out of the ordinary. Callum has tried to cover up things with Ezran before, like his intuition that Harrow was in danger in 1x01 and about Harrow’s death in 2x03. The fact that Ezran has followed him out here, though, shows that Ezran likewise has the intuition that Callum isn’t doing okay, even if Ezran and co. have clearly put effort into a party, a cake, and making his 17th birthday a special one. We don’t know how Callum was acting at said party, or indeed how long he stayed, but Ezran also knows that Callum has been trying to move on the past two years, to live as much of a life as he can, to not sink into the sadness and grief.
Yet all of Callum’s efforts falter, so it’s not beyond Ezran to ask, “Why aren’t you celebrating?” because Callum was trying, wasn’t he? Has been trying, is trying. He just can’t.
Here we see our first hint that this is related to a specific timeskip event, as he reveals that, “It’s not really my birthday anymore. Not to me. It’ll never be the same.” Again, with no context of TTM, someone could think it’s maybe because Harrow passed away and now he and Ezran are orphans. Or the inkling that it may have to do with the fact that Rayla isn’t here starts to sink in, right as Ezran confirms it on the next line.
E: Because of Rayla. C: To me, this will always just be the anniversary [shaky breath] of the day she left.
This is a big piece of information to drop. We know she’s not there, we know she and Callum left on some kind of terms (again, non TTM readers may think he’s referring to a particularly bad breakup, as leaving can have many connotations), and it tells a casual viewer that Rayla has been gone for at least a year. This is also a reaffirmation of Callum’s devotional mourning to her (“this will always”) but we’ll touch more on that later.
Then Ezran says what we already know, but very much appreciate hearing out loud.
E: You still love her, don’t you? C: I don’t even know if she’s alive.
This is what lets the pieces click into place. Callum isn’t just heartbroken, he’s worried, and it tells the audience that 1) whatever happened was bad yet not a breakup, and he still has feelings for her, and 2) Rayla isn’t just gone, she’s completely MIA even to the boys who love her the most. Then we end with a sweet reaffirmation from Ezran that, “She’s alive. And wherever she is, she loves you too.”
As Callum breaks down in tears, it provides the implication that Callum likely wanted to go with her, or perhaps that they had a big fight about her going and she left anyway, and he’s been dealing with the heartache since then. Again, to a casual viewer, this is the first establishment/confirmation that Rayla has left. We still have no clue as to why, and I think the first real insight into explaining that portion of TTM will either be from Callum to Aaravos or when we first see Rayla again as audience members and possibly get a flashback. I could 4x02 resolving to answer that question, to show that Rayla is as cut up about their separation as he is, and instead letting anticipation build for the reunion (and maybe some dramatic irony) or see them staving off showing Rayla further until the mid-point of the season.
With the contextual analysis done, let’s move onto the structural side of things with this being the closing note of Callum’s premiere conflict and how it stacks up to the other seasons.
We have three season premieres to take a gander at, but I’ve long thought that S4 would be the most reminiscent of S2 for a variety of reasons. One of these is because prior to S4, S2 was the only one with any kind of remote timeskip. We also knew that Callum would be going through an emotionally rough time in particular, with S2 easily being the hardest time in his life in Arc 1, as well as having the most prominent Viren-Callum parallels that I suspected would jump to the forefront in S4. This also seems to be reflected in the series’ premiere conflicts.
In 1x01, the episode has to do a lot of legwork to set up all the characters and the core conflict of the first three episodes. Callum’s ire towards Ezran leaves him on a hollow note that 1x09 has a great call back to (even if said call back is actually introduced in 1x02) but dealing with his fear of losing Harrow doesn’t actually come to fruition in S2. Then in 3x01, he actually isn’t left off on a conflict, only a continuation of their mission with Rayla and Zym happily by his side.
Meanwhile, 2x01 has a lot of similarities, with the formation of Ezran and Zym’s bond, just as in 4x01 Ezran is excited about Zym and Zubeia coming to visit Katolis. Both episodes have Callum going somewhere late at night related to the moon, a comforting hand on his shoulder, and a dejected air. 2x01 also introduces Callum’s desire to connect to an arcanum and the fact it is impossible, given the fact that he’s a human. There’s been foreshadowing for a while that Callum will connect next to the Moon arcanum, so him staring up at the Moon while wanting/wishing he could connect with Rayla in 4x01 is a good sign for him connecting to the Moon arcanum having a dual purpose in the narrative (without even looping in how Aaravos as a liar trapped in a reflective surface, which is about as moon magic as it gets). This also reflects the way that Callum is uniquely isolated and tethered to the magical world in S4.
Furthermore, Callum’s quest for magic and connection sent him to some dark and self-destructive places in S2, such as embarking into the storm in 2x04 and risking his life to find magic, and then in doing dark magic when he felt he had no other choice to save/protect Rayla. This ran parallel with Viren making a good decision (deciding to not trust Aaravos, just as Callum pulled back from the lightning rod) before eventually going back in 2x07/2x08 because “I have nothing left to lose,” just as Callum does dark magic and then has to face a literal reflection of himself.
This also bodes well for Callum and Rayla reuniting this season and beginning that path to reconciliation as well. Callum wanted to connect to the Sky arcanum in 2x01 and after a few trials and tribulations, he managed to do so. Since that was his closing scene for S2′s premiere, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of predictive possibility that Rayla and Callum’s separation plot line will also be resolved fully by the end of 4x09 (and again, not without its bumps and angst along the way).
Tumblr media
Last but not least, let’s look at the characterization.
As already noted, Callum is more closed off, but still not without the tendency to open up with a bit (or very minimal) prompting. It’s also nice to see that he’s grown to be able to rely more emotionally on Ezran. Not only has his little brother grown up a lot, but Callum has also somewhat been forced to, since his main peer-confidant in Rayla has been gone for so long, and Ezran is the only person who can really understand what he’s going through.
That being said, Callum is still clearly feeling isolated. To everyone else, Ezran included, today is his birthday and a cause for celebration. But Callum states twice “Not to me,” and “to me,” that the day has been irrevocably marred by pain and grief. We know at this point that Callum is worried that Rayla may not even be alive and that, therefore, his birthday is the closest he’ll get to a proper sort of death date to mourn her. It was the day he lost her, in all the ways.
What I find most interesting, though, is the way he dodges Ezran’s (technical lbr here) question as well as the implications it offers up for later. Previously, Callum has never been afraid to own up to things even when embarrassed or panicked; with few exceptions, he always says how he feels and answers things pretty straight-forwardly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know from the short story, “Inheritance,” that Callum has basically coped by doing his best not to think of her at all, even if that clearly hasn’t worked out for him:
“It was the night everything changed. The night we found Zym’s egg, right over there! And it was the night I met—”
It was impossible to say her name out loud.
Rayla.
It still hurt. She was still gone, and Callum had no idea if she’d ever come back.
Callum shook his head. He couldn’t think about her. Not now.
Gulping down the pain, he focused on the things around him, as much as they turned his stomach.
It seems this has bled into his relationship with Ezran as well, tantamount being that if they’re having this conversation, they likely haven’t actually talked about Rayla in a while (six months at least, if not more). And just like in “Inheritance,” Callum still doesn’t say her name. Which makes me think the first time he does say her name in S4 will be pretty significant (as Callum was prone to saying it particularly often).
Point blank, being in love with and loving Rayla still hurts a lot, even if it’s something he cannot remove or let go of. After all, “always” means forever. It means that he truly believes, in his heart of hearts, that every anniversary of this day will be something he remembers, something he aches over, for the rest of his life. He turned 15 when he left, he’s 17 now and still completely torn up inside, and stuck in the same emotional limbo Rayla was in during TTM; he doesn’t have answers for what happened to her, and that’s part of what makes it so painful. Yet we also see he’s grown more ‘realistic/cynical’ since Harrow’s death, not wanting to give himself false hope and pretend that everything is actually fine.
“I don’t even know if she’s alive,” is in some ways a reflection of both Callum’s maturity and his immaturity of wanting to deflect and not give a straight-answer. It also shows his understanding that 1) Rayla didn’t want to go and that she surely wanted to come back, and 2) if she hasn’t by now, maybe she never will.
Then we have Ezran reaffirming two truths as well as his own perpetual faith: “She’s alive. And wherever she is, she loves you too.”
Callum has always been a character unafraid to say what he feels and to wear his heart on his sleeve, but Rayla has been the exception more than once. Not for a lack of feeling comfortable, but because of the weight she holds in his life. In 1x06, Callum held his mistrust somewhat to his chest because of frustration at wanting to trust her, but being unsure if he should (I’m sure we’ll see something similar in S4 at some point). In 2x07 when she goes after the dragon, he doesn’t talk to Ezran about his worry and fear at all, instead drawing before exploding in on himself. In 3x04, he doesn’t show his feelings for her verbally on purpose until after she’s already kissed him, and then gets utterly swept away in 3x05. Callum has always been a rambler, but with Rayla he weighs his words differently, because they matter more to him.
(Very Jane Austen “If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.”)
The other factor is that, just as Ezran is the only one who says her name, he’s also the mouthpiece for getting across the fact that, obviously, Callum and Rayla are still both madly in love with each other. Growth can be shown later in the season by 1) Callum saying her name and 2) he and Rayla saying “I love you” again and honestly expressing their feelings, particularly for Callum in this case.
Last but not least, I want to connect the growth Callum is going to go through indicated by the second Rayllum clip we have, in which he cries while holding Rayla’s sword, seemingly deep in Xadia.
Tumblr media
In the start of the season, Callum is dejected and starting to give up hope, worried and still thinking of her just as much, and still very much in love with her, even after everything, but with no foreseeable plans to leave Katolis and the life he’s been living. At some point in the season, something compels him to don his scarf, leave Katolis, and travel deep to Drakewood, getting close enough to Rayla’s last known location (and given the importance of her blades, likely somewhere she was at recently) to find her sword and cradle it to his chest. This could be both proof to him that she’s still alive and that he’s also just, heartbreakingly missed her. And after coming so close, there’s no way this scene won’t harden his resolve to do something; either to find/save her, or to avenge her.
This season is going to tear down his walls and possibly his heart, but a far better future is waiting for him where he will be open and honest, and never hold back from saying how he feels aloud ever again.

@rnmmarchformeta Day 1: Tonight’s theme is: Themes
Malex and Music: Tracing a relationship through music used in the show - Part 1
----
Given that both Michael and Alex have a personal connection to music, I wanted to go over some of the intricacies of what the music choices and lyrics/stories behind the songs used might tell us about Malex. The music choices in Roswell New Mexico are deliberate and often incredibly pointed. Particularly in the case of Michael and Alex there are elements of their relationship that are not so much underlined as written about only in the lyrical choices that play under their scenes. This choice for me made rewatching the series a lot of fun because as I discovered the lyrics to some of the more obscure song choices I kept discovering new intricacies and motivations for each of their decisions. Below the cut for length.
(Author’s note circa 2007:  (rawr xD) I’m focusing specifically on the parts of these songs that play over or in direct correlation to scenes where Michael and Alex are both present. I would love to explore this theme in the wider context of the whole show and how their interactions with other characters might change some of these but...this is already like 6k and that’s just how the peas and carrots cooked. That said I will be referencing other characters and relationships as relevant, particularly, I will be talking at some length about Milexa and the airstream scenes in 2x06. I personally have a favorable reading of the scenes and what they mean for Michael and Alex. I also talk briefly about Milexa in a few other spots - they’ve been marked as ‘Milexa’ or ‘Miluca’ if you wish to skip them, although I don’t know if this will make sense as a whole without them. But, should you wish. Proceed accordingly. <3)
----
Posted on AO3 here.
Sedona - Houndstooth (1x01)
Tumblr media
The first song we hear in relation to Malex is ‘Sedona’ by Houndstooth. The song plays during the reunion as we see Alex confront Michael about the chemicals found around his airstream. The verse that plays underneath the scene references how, due to its scenic beauty, the town of Sedona was once a highly sought after filming location but had fallen into obscurity when cowboy movies went out of style in the late 70′s.
Similarly, Alex tells Michael that he is ‘wasting his life.’
“Does the macho cowboy swagger thing ever get old for you?”
“Did it get old for you?”
For me, this scene is as much an introduction to the past between these two as their present. Gone but not forgotten, their interactions are a ‘script’ that the two of them play off of. In other words, Michael and Alex don’t so much interact as play off of what the other expects from the other. This becomes especially clear when in 2x05 we learn that Alex has at least once before warned Michael about ‘wasting his life.’
When The Truth Hunts You Down - Sam Tinnesz (1x01)
Tumblr media
The next scene is this one, in which we see Alex contemplating an old picture of himself. We then see Michael watching him.
Later, the last line is overlaid with Jesse telling Kyle about the existence of aliens.
The truth about Michael’s alienness is quiet literally hunting them, but so is something about Alex’s past. As we get to know him, we learn just how much his father is interconnected with all of the worst moments in his life and everrything he has buried and tried to run from in order to avoid it. Michael, Roswell itself - Alex ran halfway across the world to try to run away from the trauma of his youth, and yet here he is.
“Nostalgia’s a bitch, huh?”
“You know I thought when I got back from Iraq you would be long gone.”
“Is that what you want?”
“We’re not kids anymore. What I want doesn't matter.”
We also find out something of the nature of his and Michael’s relationship and that there are clearly still feelings between them - no matter how much Alex is trying to deny it.
Give Me The Night - Des Rocs (1x02)
Tumblr media
This is one of my personal faves from the Malex soundtracks. It just *slaps* okay?
Aside from the obvious nod to Michael’s alienness, this song underscores the divide still between Michael and Alex despite the passionate kiss they shared at the reunion. Michael is initially flirtatious and full of swagger - until Alex shuts him down.
The fallacy of Alex’s rebuke and his dismissal of the feelings behind the kiss are underscored by his refusal to even look Michael in the eye as they talk. Even if he tries to deny them, the truth of his feelings hunts and haunts him because he feels he can never act on his own desires. And in turn when presented with the about face, Michael turns bitter as the push-pull is reinitiated. Michael falls back to the script they’ve been rehashing to save his feelings - ‘puts on a show’ as it were, and Alex falls for it hook, line, and sinker. He is still unwilling or unable to see the truth that lies beneath the surface.
“Isn’t there some law about building on a historical site?”
“A historical - oh you mean because the UFO crashed here? Yeah, we’re not supposed to build on Santa’s workshop either.”
For Michael, who at least to me was obviously hoping things would change this time around, this must feel like a bucket of cold water, especially in the face of Liz Ortecho’s knowledge and seeming easy acceptance of the aliens’ existence. While Max might get his happy ending, Michael is left to keep hiding from the person he loves, never being seen and wondering if Alex’s feelings are even real.
Two Princes - Spin Doctors (1x02) (Miluca)
Tumblr media
In rapid fire we have the next three songs as Michael and Alex spend some time at the Wild Pony. This verse plays under the interaction when Alex comes in the bar and spots Michael.
“Though he got kinda hot. In a ‘sex in a truck, smells like a river, never introduce him to your mama’ kind of way.”
“I hadn’t noticed.”
My boy. My child. My bluntest instrument in the tool kit. Has no one ever told Alex Manes that saying you hadn’t noticed an objectively hot guy is hot is basically code for ‘I haven’t stopped staring at him since I walked in and my brain is not functioning at a high enough level to mask that fact’? Son, please, this is a drunk Wendy’s.
(Also this is huge foreshadowing for Miluca - Michael and Maria don’t have sex *in* a truck but it’s pretty close, we find out later that Michael/the aliens smell like rain, and she tells him he’s not meeting her mother at one point. The angle of this shot is also, for me at least, a hint that Michael is going to become the object of these two ‘princes’ affections, at some point.)
Anyway this is basically poking fun at Alex Manes, repressed disaster, for having no clue what love is and trying to express his affection through like, everything except anything anyone would understand as romantic love. (And we will see this in the flashbacks as well as present day - that Alex mostly uses his station or advantages as a way to show the people he loves he loves them, rather than using words. When he offers Michael the shed, brings him the guitar, uses his military connections to find out about Michel’s mom, hacks into Maria’s computer...listen I got more.) But that isn’t enough, as we’re learning. If only there were some way Alex could also learn that lesson.
And seriously, “This one said he wants to buy you rockets?”
How’s It Going To Be? - Stephen Edwards (1x02)
Tumblr media
“Is there really nobody in this world that you wouldn’t risk everything to save? Sad.”
Oh Isobel, if only you knew.
So, aside from returning the kiss Michael initiated at the reunion, Alex has soundly rejected every advance Michael has made for a relationship. Despite that Michael seems to have been harboring some hope that things might be different not that Alex is back more permanently. But now with Isobel bringing into question what he’s willing to sacrifice, I think he might be realizing that toll has been extremely steep already.
(Also truly obsessed with how both Alex and Michael have positioned themselves so that they can casually glance over at each other without arousing suspicion. *Boys*. It’s not that complicated what is this middle school?)
We know that Michael doesn’t like having to keep secrets, and again I have to wonder if he’s regretting not telling Alex he’s an alien, or wondering how that conversation would have gone.
From the previous scenes we can tell something in their relationship is coming to a head - maybe Michael is hoping it’s that he can finally stop keeping secrets from Alex and show Alex who he really is - that Alex will stop misreading him. That Alex will change.
But there is also the expectation that if that happens, Alex will likely leave again. Not just because that’s what Alex’s trauma makes him do, but also because that is how Michael frames all of his relationships. As ‘until you leaves’. He is shown to have a habit of catastrophizing because he doesn’t believe himself to ‘belong’ anywhere(HA) and this is one of those times we’re shown that.
Come With Me - Gold Star (1x02)
Tumblr media
“Home can be a person.”
And here we have Alex “thinking about who he was” as Maria closes up the bar. Given where this scene leads with him and Michael, I think the rest of the lyrics to the song are incredibly poignant.
Tell me what were you dreaming? Tell me who were you trying to reach? Gimme something real to believe in Or gimme a reason to leave So i left her standing under shining stars in the Silver moonlight by old Borough Hall - whoever you are
We know that after this evening Alex attempts to rekindle his relationship with Michael, still thinking about who he was, and maybe for the first time trying not to run from what he wants. He’ll be unsuccessful this time, but it’s the first clue that Alex is attempting to break a pattern that has held him in place for ten years.
While he may have been misreading Michael’s stunted growth, we’re starting to see Alex contemplate change in himself. This is the start of Alex’s two season long journey to break out of the fortress he’s built around himself. To ‘put his weapons down’ in an effort to be with Michael.
(She lets her guard down on her way back//to close her eyes and fall asleep - “It was late....I was tired.”)
God of Wine - Third Eye Blind
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So clearly the writers were like ‘how can we hurt Milo specifically’ because these lyrics are *so good* as we hear malex talk about the way they view their relationship for the first time in the show.
The music starts just as Michael picks up the old photographs, first of the pod squad, then of himself and Alex playing guitars in the desert. As he packs up the airstream to move it off Foster’s Ranch, Michael is also thinking about the past.
Throughout the series, we’re given a bunch of musical lines about how Michael and Alex can’t go back to what they were, that they have to move forward. And it’s true - as we’ll see over and over again the dynamic they’ve had has been incredibly unhealthy for both of them. But they also cannot avoid the other’s orbit. And when Alex comes to talk to Michael it’s the first time we see him actually decide to initiate - to try and take what he himself wants, rather than waiting or hiding from it. But it is also very much Alex falling back into the ‘madness that holds a truth he can’t erase’ of Michael’s really, very, super, incredibly obvious feelings for him. Our boy is not subtle.
But Alex is still hunted by the past - before we know his history we assume that when Alex references ‘who he was before he went to war’ he means Iraq. But Alex’s war is his father. As much as combat can absolutely be a traumatizing experience, for Alex I never really read that as his main source. As he’ll tell Forrest later - “My PTSD triggers are a little more complicated”.
And so when he tells Michael he’s been thinking about who he was “before he went to war” for me that’s more a callback to who he was before Jesse found the two of them in the toolshed. “When this started.”
As Michael tells him “From where I stand nothing’s changed”  the words “I know, I know, I know” repeat in the background because WE KNOW. We all know, except Alex.
“And that’s a problem for me, Guerin.”
And the siren’s song that is your madness
“Because every time you look at me, I’m seventeen all over again.”
holds a truth I can’t erase
“- and I forget that the last ten years even happened. And then you look away and I remember all over again. And it almost kills me every time.”
All alone on your face
“I never look away. Not really.”
For Michael this is basically confirmation of what he’s been realizing over the last few days - that Alex has been totally misreading him and that yes, Michael, you’re going to have to use your words on this one.
To which we see Alex’s brain 404-blue-screen for a minute as he realizes what Michael means. Which I personally really appreciate.
And especially since we’ve just learned that a lyric of this song was written on Rosa’s hand the night she died, I can’t believe it’s a coincidence in this being the song that plays underneath this scene - where Alex says he was thinking about who he was before. Everything changed that day for everyone - including Michael and Alex. Michael had gained a terrible secret he couldn’t share, that meant he changed his whole life and started needing to hide and lie and act out, and Alex - not knowing the truth - assumed that it was Michael’s way of trying to push him away and end the relationship. Which leads to the decades long miscommunication of Alex seeing Michael do that over and over again.
For the last ten years, Alex has been seeing Michael as the boy who looks away, then looks back. A Michael whose focus shifts to and away from him and who he sees as wasting his life; directionless and aimless. But as he realizes what Michael is saying he has to recalibrate everything he’s thought their relationship is.
This is possibly the first time Alex has realized that his view of Michael has been wrong. That he really doesn’t know Michael at all.
And we know this interaction has a profound impact on Alex in terms of how he views their relationship. I feel like this is one of those things that becomes a mantra for Alex, later down the line. He repeats it to Michael at Caulfield, and in his song as well, “You never looked away, now I won’t look away” to express his commitment to breaking down the walls he has built up for himself.
Even though we know the relationship is doomed at this point, it’s the first time a stone falls from the walls Alex has built around himself in a decade.
Here - Chance Peña - 1x03 (Alternate title: “Home”)
Tumblr media
Okay I would like to petition to make it illegal to have unreleased songs in episodes, Chance Peña help a bitch out. I had to watch a *fish show* to hear the full lyrics because they’re edited in the show! ( I will also note the next lyric is ‘goodbye, my dear’ which. rude.)
Anyway, we’re given these lyrics as Michael wakes up to seeing Alex has stayed the night. I took the editing, with the previous song choices, to be a reaffirmation of this being something new to Alex, but not necessarily to Michael. Michael knows what he wants from a relationship with Alex - even if he’s put the hope aside from time to time the want is always clear.
For Alex though, a relationship with Michael is something that scares him because of his fear that it can be taken away. (”I just thought that I could be happy, and not be afraid that if I loved anything my dad would destroy it.”) He is trying to make it work - “drawing near” to Michael - but he knows that in order to do that he is going to need to be uncomfortable. To face the fears that have held him back and kept him in comfortable limbo for so long.
I’m also going to flail about how, while RNM has the song listed as ‘Here’, the producer of the other show(Battlefish) identified the song as ‘Home’. I hope I don’t have to yell at y’all, other Roswell New Mexico fans, about how often that word has snuck up on me and knifed me in the back regarding malex. Especially since Alex *is* currently - well, here. With his home. Kill me please it would be kinder.
But then of course we see the old insecurities pop up again as Isobel arrives. Even if he is trying - Alex is nowhere near ready to jump out of the closet yet.
Fast Aint Good Enough - Inkwell Echo (1x06)
Tumblr media
I debated adding this one because it’s a little bit reachy, but I thought it was significant in that even when they were seventeen, the thing Alex is ‘afraid of’ is his feelings for Michael - not necessarily of being gay but of what people like Kyle and his father do with information like that.
Wish I’d found the words when we were seventeen-
Kyle asks
“What are you so afraid of?”
-just as Alex catches sight of Michael.
(“I wanted to be the kind of person who won battles. It felt good.”)
Aside from Alex’s general need to protect Michael in any and all situations, I feel like the lyrics of this song - about the singer’s attempt to leave an abusive relationship - underscore that even before the toolshed, Alex was fighting. Even before the toolshed, he has been fighting to this cycle he is trapped in.
While he and Michael build their relationship he starts thinking seriously about leaving and not just surviving but he will ultimately choose to trap himself for years in order to hide his love for Michael.
Like so many gay kids, Alex is fighting a system that deems him guilty of sin - and takes his fighting back as a sign of his guilt. And in order to actually be able to love Michael, he is going to have to figure out how to put down the weapons and the hurt and break the cycle.
First Day Of My Life - Bright Eyes (1x06)
Tumblr media
Are they serious right now I swear to god.
So obviously, we’ve got the origins for everything we’re told about Michael and Alex’s lives changing based on their feelings for each other in like two and a half verses of song. Forget the entire second season we have everything we need right here.
“It was the first time I liked our hometown, though.”
-
“Alex made me believe there was a place for me here.”
We know that for both of them this is really a moment of self discovery as much as it is a discovery about each other.
For Michael in particular, who doesn’t know why he’s here or who he really is, and who previously had no plans besides leaving the planet, this is the moment that he realizes what he wants - to be with Alex.
And for Alex, to me, this moment is a brief glimpse into what his life could be like. We don’t have any confirmation if Michael is his first kiss with a boy or not, but we do know that this moment is significant in that it’s the first that makes Roswell feel like a place he enjoys being.
And as he is realizing that, the lyrics echo it -
But I realized that I need you // And I wondered if I could come home
(Screeching from the background: WOULD YOU COME HOME)
But of course, as the song says, these things take forever because...well....
(It’s because Alex is dumb. My poor dumb emotionally stunted child. Please go to therapy.)
In essence, this is the moment that sets Michael and Alex on their entwined path. The path that Alex will have to fight to get back to - the path Michael will lose faith in before he later starts to regain the hope that it exists. I also like to think about the link between the last lines:
Remember the time you drove all night // Just to meet me in the morning?
and the line from ‘Would You Come Home’
Would you meet me in the middle // Could we both stop keeping score?
I like to think about the parallel here, about meeting people where they’re at, and the love and care and effort it takes to be willing to drive all night to meet someone. Listen a bitch is soft and gay don’t look at me.
You Can’t Love Me - Novi & Tyler Blackburn (1x12)
Tumblr media
(*Whispers and rocks back and forth* this is fine it’s all fine)
Once again we have a song whose lyrics give us a tailor made road map to Malex, and will pop up later in ‘Would You Come Home’. We’ve already seen the implosion of the way Michael and Alex have been orbiting each other for a decade, but now that Alex knows the truth, he actually has the ability to understand Michael in ways he hasn’t been able to before. (Something we’ll see later in Season 2 when he talks with Maria.)
And because of that, we see the true beginning of the journey of Michael and Alex back to one another in a healthier way.
But part of that journey is going to be realizing that what they’ve been doing and the way they have loved each other in the past isn’t sustainable - and maybe isn’t even the way they want to love each other.
“They’re my family, Alex!”
“Alright, maybe! But you are mine. I don’t look away, Guerin.”
“No. We’ve been holding onto this thing. And it’s gotten us nowhere. Just let it go.”
Even though the words are said in anger, there is some truth to what Michael says. Their relationship so far hasn’t been a good one. Where Alex is trying to repeat the words that Michael said to him that made such an impact on him, Michael is (well, a, trying to save his dumb boyfriend from getting flambayed) using the opportunity to reveal how little faith he has in their relationship. To say that no, this doesn’t feel like love.
But as much as the song lyrics are about loving someone who isn’t good for you, they’re also about changing and growing, and about a commitment to be better.
(Sound familiar? Brb, I’m gonna go jump off a cliff.)
Love is messy, and especially for Michael and Alex, love has always been something that hurts. “Home is where the hurt is” - and a really important part of their journey is realizing that, and realizing there is a different way of loving each other.
Additionally for Alex, this is when he starts to realize the full extent of his family’s involvement in hunting and hurting Michael’s family. It isn’t just his dad - his entire family line has been involved in this since before Alex was born. And still is. This is really where he starts realizing the roots of the guilt and shame he’s going to have to deal with in order to be anything to Michael - not even a partner but a friend.
This is the first step in that journey. Not just the commitment that yes - I want to build a home for you - but that first, I don’t know, maybe I need to put down these weapons and pick up a different set of tools?

map out a world
I fell in love with Alec and my brain had decided that he's autistic by 1x02, and this is the result. It's basically just 6.7k of Alec finding his inner autistic and Magnus being supportive. Huge thanks to @moonlight-breeze-44 for checking it over and being amazingly supportive.
CWs: there's more than a bit of internalized ableism on Alec's part in this, and some self-injurious stims.
-
1.
By now, Alec is fairly sure Magnus is trying to tell him something.
It's all about the books. It was sweet to discover, early on in their relationship, that Magnus absolutely loves reading Mundane fiction. It's partly because there's no such thing as Shadow World fiction, Alec knows. There are books of history, of legends and tales, but no modern fiction. Shadowhunters are too busy raising soldiers to care for anything cultural that isn't related to being obsessed over their heritage, and most Downworlders are either integrated enough into mundane society to adopt most of their culture, or not human enough to care for something as simple as books.
Magnus also grew up at a time were books were exceedingly rare and entirely out of his reach − he didn’t learn to read before he was over fifty years old − so discovering the imaginary worlds of the Mundanes was all the sweetest to him. He has a habit of opening the door of almost every bookshop he passes by, just to look and smell the books, and almost always comes out with a couple of new novels. He also reads at lightning speed, so he often immediately donates the books he doesn't want to keep to the closest refugee charity.
Alec loves learning about his quirks, and he's followed Magnus into more than one unassuming bookshop around the world during their dates. For some reason, Magnus especially loves crime books and the soapiest romances. But it's not something that they share.
Walking into the loft, Alec eyes the new pile of books on the coffee table, that he knows for a fact wasn’t there this morning when he left for work. He kicks off his shoes and drops beside Magnus on the couch, just shy of touching him. Magnus looks up from his paperback and extends an inviting arm, so Alec ducks under it to rest against his side.
Magnus knows to squeeze him just tight enough, making Alec sigh softly. The sun is barely rising, and it's been a long night at the Institute. Alec is glad to be home, finally. “What are you reading?” he asks when he feels steady enough to speak.
Magnus wordlessly shows him the cover. Neurotribes, Alec reads. The legacy of autism− that's not Magnus' usual reading material. It's been happening more and more, lately, Magnus switching from terrible romances to non-fiction. He started with LGBT history books, a few months ago. Pride flags started to make random appearances around the loft, and there's now a whole shelf of books, most of them rainbow-colored in some way, behind Magnus' desk. He told Alec about the parts of that history that he lived, and the ones that no book ever talked about, the lovers he had that would never be remembered, the people who'd fought for their rights from the shadows.
Then he switched to books about therapy. About trauma, PTSD, child abuse. Alec frowned at that, but he figures that Magnus has plenty of bad childhood memories. He still thinks about how rattled Magnus was, that time the agony rune brought his mother's death back up. If books can help him process that, then good for him, right?
This is new. There are half a dozen new books beside Magnus' glass, and they’re all about autism. It doesn't seem like something Magnus would research for himself−or is it? No. “Why?” Alec asks.
Magnus shrugs. “It's enlightening,” he says.
“Autism?”
“I think it could explain some things. And these ideas, about neurology being as diverse as sexuality, or skin color? I like it.”
Alec nods at the second part − it does seem like an interesting concept. Maybe he'll ask about it more, when he's not so tired. “Explain what?” he still asks.
“You should try reading them.”
“Magnus, I don't−”
Magnus stops him by squeezing his shoulder tighter. “I know. It's fine. I'll just keep reading, and share thoughts, maybe.”
“Okay,” Alex says softly. He still doesn't get it, but if it's something Magnus is interested in, then he's willing to listen. Always. He puts his hand over Magnus' on his shoulder, running his fingers over the warm silver rings.
Like a great many of their hobbies, it isn’t something they share. Alec doesn't read for fun. He reads action reports and Clave memos and equipment order forms, but he doesn't read books. It's not something he enjoys.
Or maybe that's not true, not exactly. He used to love reading, as a child in Idris. He'd get his hands on every history book he could find, heavy volumes bound in dusty leather, and devour his way through them. That is, until Jace came along.
Jace who didn't like books. He and Izzy got right along, wanting nothing more than to spar in the training room or run outside every chance they got. Alec knows now that it's not true, that Jace enjoyed reading before Valentine made even that into a lesson, a punishment, but back then he turned it on Alec, mocking him cruelly in the way only a child can every time he caught him with his nose inside a book. Alec never cared too much about the other children's taunts, but from Jace, who was better than him at everything, including at pleasing Alec's parents, it was different. So he stopped. He started following Jace and Izzy everywhere they went, and in the little time he had free, he perfected the one thing that was still his own: archery.
He hasn't read a book cover to cover since he was eleven. Magnus tried to get him to read at bedtime, but he'll just pull up work papers. Fiction is an escape he doesn't need (doesn't deserve).
“Are you tired?” Magnus asks when Alex sighs softly at where his thoughts are going.
“A little,” Alec admits.
“How about you go rest for a bit while I get breakfast ready?”
Alec nods. As much as he'd love to stay in Magnus' arms, he's been interacting with people all night, and more than just his siblings, now that he has to coordinate all the Shadowhunter teams going out. He probably needs some time to sort himself out.
Magnus initiates the move his brain is struggling with, hoisting them both up off the couch. He gives Alec one last squeeze − his hold lower on Alec's back, now that they're standing, and it gives Alec goose bumps − and wanders off toward the kitchen, his book abandoned on the couch. Alec shakes himself and makes his way to their bedroom. Without letting himself think too much about it, he grabs the first book of the pile on the coffee table as he goes.
He stays immobile in front of the bed for a full minute, trying to decide if he can curl up under the blanket even though he's still dressed. Undressing doesn't seem worth it. He compromises by only removing his pants, since his jacket is already off, and keeping his shirt on. He takes his stele out of his pocket before getting into bed and keeps it in his hand, mindlessly running his fingers up and down the textured metal handle. He sets the paperback by his head and stares at it, thinking.
He's not always good at reading between the lines, but he's not obtuse, either. He's seen the pattern. Magnus' reading choices and his gentle encouragements to look at the books have coincided directly, and a part of Alec knows that Magnus wasn't looking up PTSD in child soldiers for himself, however much he doesn't want to acknowledge it. It's him reaching out, trying to understand, even though Alec doesn't believe it's quite the right way of going at it.
He's not traumatized. Sure, he was raised a soldier, but Mundane categories don't apply. Mundanes are more fragile, aren't they? They don't heal as easily as Shadowhunters, even physically. Beside, Jace had it so much worse than Alec growing up, and he's fine. Mostly.
This new phase, though, it's more of a surprise. Sure, they've acknowledged, together, that neither of them is quite normal. Their queerness took a back seat, in Downworlder and Shadowhunter eyes alike, to the mixed nature of their couple, but they stand out like a sore thumb everywhere they go, even in the Mundane world. Magnus stands out largely by choice, by his fashion choices, but Alec has come to realize that those are an armor as much as they're a statement. He envies Magnus, sometimes, for how easy it is to him to reject the norm, to refuse to conform.
Alec stands out by default. It's just who he is, the one who never quite fits. His size makes him visible when he wishes he could disappear into the background, and his constant awkwardness attracts attention he doesn't want. He's tried so hard to obey all the rules, to be perfect, the son his parents tried to mold him into, the brother his siblings could be proud of, but he failed, again and again. Something in him is just...not right.
Broken.
Different, not broken,  the book's subtitle jumps out at him, on the spine. Alec almost rolls his eyes at the truism. Yes, sure, different. Different enough that he can never be what's expected of him, that it interferes with his duty. Dating Magnus is one thing, a violation of the norm he will allow himself, because he can see that the norm is the one that's wrong there. Downworlders aren't less than Shadowhunters, so why should their relationship be frowned upon? And Alec knows plenty of queer people, by now. He knows they're not broken. Magnus' beautiful soul certainly isn't broken.
But Alec is. Not because he’s gay, but because he’s  a b normal.
“Alexander?”
Alec starts at the noise and recoils, just a little. Magnus is standing close, though Alec hasn't heard him approach. The concern in his eyes tells Alec that it's not the first time Magnus has called his name. “Sorry,” he mutters.
“Breakfast can wait, if you'd rather sleep.”
“No, I'm coming.” Alec doesn't think he can sleep, now that his mind has slid down this path.
He leaves the paperback on his bedside table.
 2.
The subject doesn't come up again for another few weeks. The book remains on Alec's nightstand, and he actually finds himself skimming it. Magnus doesn't push once. He leaves the pile of other books on the coffee table, and more join them when he stops at a bookstore on one of their walks, but he doesn't insist on Alec reading them.
But something changes. It's in the little things, barely perceptible unless Alec pays attention. Magnus' behavior toward him changes slightly. He asks for permission before touching him. He seems to recognize when Alec is stuck, and manages to gently steer him into action. He stops himself mid-sentence to reword his questions in a clearer way.
The first time Alec notices, really sees what Magnus is trying to do, he panics. He's pretty sure that isn't at all what Magnus intended when he pulled out a fidget toy and offered it to Alec, for him to lock himself in the bathroom and have a panic attack.
“Darling, please let me in,” Magnus says through the door. He could just use his magic and ignore the lock, but he doesn't. Alec is relieved, confusedly, through the buzzing in his ears, and yet a little disappointed. He clasps his hands over his ears, even though the loft is nearly silent and the noise he's hearing comes from inside.
“Alexander!” Magnus calls again, still softly but with an edge. Alec freezes, his breathing suddenly going from erratic to perfectly controlled, even though the pounding in his ears intensifies. Magnus is angry with him. He should be. By all rights, he should have already broken in, or be long gone.
“Let me in, Alec.” Magnus is not soft anymore, but commanding. The change in address isn't lost on Alec, either. Magnus only drops his habit of using his full name when something's really wrong.
Alec swallows. He picks himself up and takes two steps toward the door. He keeps his face angled away from the brightness of the bathroom window, but he checks his posture before he sticks out his hand to undo the lock. He hurriedly steps back, close to the wall, hands clasped behind his back.
Magnus pushes the door in, taking in the bathroom quickly until he settles on Alec. Alec keeps his eyes trained straight forward, just above Magnus' head.
“Oh, Alexander,” Magnus breathes.
Alec itches to wring his hands, but he's long learned to stay still. He waits, instead. Waits for Magnus to tell him that it's over, that this is too much.
He thought things were going fairly well. Magnus let him be as close to honest as Alec dares to be, these days. Before he knew it, Alec found himself relaxing around him, not bothering to watch his every move. He thought maybe it was because they come from such different cultures. Magnus doesn't know what's expected of a Shadowhunter, just like Alec knows very little about Warlocks, so maybe his eccentricities passed for cultural difference. But he was wrong, wasn't he?
Magnus knows, and he's trying to figure out what's wrong with Alec. That's the reason for the books. He's trying to fix him, and soon enough he's going to realize that there's no fixing this.
Or maybe he already has.
Magnus approaches him slowly, telegraphing his moves.
“I really messed this up, didn't I?” he murmurs.
Alec frowns. This is unexpected. “What?” is the only thing he manages to get past his lips, though. He wants to apologize, to beg maybe, but the words won't even come.
“I only meant to help. I didn't want to scare you.”
“I'm not scared,” Alec replies immediately, almost automatically. He is.
Magnus' hands are open in front of him, in full view, the fidget toy gone. Not that it matters. It's just a catalyst, not the actual problem.
“Tell me what you need,” Magnus offers. His voice is soft again, sad like his eyes. Alec wants to step back, but he's backed himself into the wall. He shakes his head without a word.
“Okay, okay, you don't have to tell me. Do you want space? Do you want me to go?”
Alec should say yes. He should hide far away from Magnus until he's fully in control again and then pretend nothing happened, until the next time he messes up, and the next time, the day Magnus can't deal with him anymore.
He can't.
He shakes his head again, looking away. His left hand is gripping his right so hard at his back that he can barely feel his fingers.
Magnus stays still. “I'm not leaving,” he says. “You can relax. I'm not going to try anything, Alexander.”
Alec hates that he needs this reassurance. He hates acting like this, like a child, like an abnormality, and yet he can't help it. He hates that even the thought of Magnus touching him makes his skin crawl and yet the idea of him leaving makes him want to reach out so bad. The conflict is enough to leave him immobile, incapable of choosing a course of action.
He doesn't know how long it's been, since he bolted into the bathroom. Magnus' face holds infinite patience, and that's why Alec can't look at it.
He knows that by ‘relax’ Magnus means for him to drop the parade stance he still takes without thinking about it, that always puts Magnus on edge. It is a relaxed stance, theoretically − but it's not the same, to someone who wasn't raised a Shadowhunter, is it? Alec forces himself to untangle his hands and let them fall to his sides, but then he doesn't know what to do with them. It feels wrong, to have them hanging there, touching nothing. The sudden blood flow in his fingers hurts.
“I'm sorry,” Magnus says in a low voice, and he sounds unsure, more hesitant than he's been so far. That makes Alec look at him−or at least somewhere on his face, close to the eyebrows.
“For what?” Alec frowns. He's the one who should be apologizing.
“I don't know exactly what I did wrong, but something I did made you panic. I'm sorry.”
Alec shakes his head in frustration. “You−No, you−You know,” he blurts out. “You know I'm...and you want to fix me.”
Magnus freezes. “No, no, Alexander. You've got it backward. Yes, I know you're different. I always knew.”
Alec blinks. “You did?”
“Yes, of course. But I don't want to fix you. I love you the way you are.”
Alec frowns. He tried so hard to be a version of himself that could be loved − he does believe Magnus. It's just that Magnus hasn't seen the ugly parts yet. He will bail, when he does.
Except− I never wanted you to see this  terrible,  ugly  side  of me. Maybe Magnus does know. Maybe…
“You are beautiful, Alexander.” Magnus takes a small step closer, still out of reach, but just inside Alec's space. Not intruding. Just...knocking on the door. “Everything about you is beautiful.”
The compliment glides over Alec, not really reaching him, but his own words mirrored back to him do. Magnus briefly drops his glamour, exposing his cat eyes, confirming silently that they're talking about the same thing.
“It's not−it's not the same,” Alec stammers.
“Is it not? You've seen the parts of me that are different, that I am ashamed of, and you looked me in the eyes and told me you loved me even then. Can I not do the same for you?”
Alec closes his eyes. “I'm not−” he starts, but the words aren't right. “Why are you reading all those books, then?” he asks instead. “If it's not to fix me?”
“Because I want to understand,” Magnus explains. He looks around him briefly, at the wall behind Alec, the open door, the sink. Then he seems to make a decision, and he plops down to the floor, crossing his legs under him.
Looking so far down at him, when they're so close, is quickly untenable, so Alec follows suit. He kneels first out of habit, but the position is just uncomfortable on the tiled floor, so he brings one of his legs up to rest his chin on his knee. Magnus gives him a smile.
“We're so different, you and I,” he says slowly. “We have very different life experiences. At first I thought that we'd just bridge that gap slowly as we got to know each other, but−”
“You think we're too different?” Alec hates how weak his voice sounds, how whiny.
“No,” Magnus stops him immediately. “But I...I started to get comfortable around you, and you amazed me every time you showed me that I didn't have anything to be ashamed of. You're incredible, Alexander. You make me feel...loved, even the parts of me that I could never love myself.” His eyes shine, and Alec dares a small grin, losing himself in that glow.
“You deserve all of it,” he murmurs.
“But so do you,” Magnus whispers. “And I realized that even as I lowered all my defenses, you never did.”
“I did,” Alec frowns.
“Yes, I think you did, as much as you can. But never all the way.”
The tiled plinth digs into the small of Alec's back uncomfortably. He leans into it.
“What do you mean?”
“It took me a while to realize that you don't do it consciously. Hide who you are, I mean. It's just your default. The books, they call it 'masking'.”
“I'm not hiding,” Alec frowns. Is he? He's not lying.
Magnus leans in toward him. “You don't let yourself be. You're always controlling how you move and how you speak, so that you look more normal. Aren't you?”
Alec stares for a moment, trying to make sense of the moves Magnus' lips make as his brain struggles to process the words. “I don't−I don't know,” he admits. Is he not supposed to do that? Self-control is the first lesson Shadowhunters learn, and it's deeply ingrained in him.
He looks down at his hand. He's unconsciously stuck it in the fold of his leg, under his knee, and it's now red and bears the mark of his pants' seams. He tucks it behind his back in shame.
“You shouldn't have to do that,” Magnus says softly. “I'm not asking you to change. I just want to understand so I can...meet you in the middle. You go out of your way to accommodate me and my idiosyncracies, all the time. I want to be able to do that for you too.”
Alec stares at him, speechless. Magnus stares back, avoiding his eyes as if he knows direct eye contact makes him uncomfortable. “Will you let me try?”
 3.
Magnus tries. Alec tries to let him. It doesn't go particularly smoothly.
Letting go of decades worth of strict conditioning isn't that easy, especially when you're not sure at all that you want to. When maybe it's the only thing holding you together.
If it really is a mask, then who is Alec once it is taken off? How does he own up to the parts of him he doesn't allow to pierce through, even behind closed doors?
Is there anything left of him that wasn't ripped away by training?
He's better off going on like he always has, he decides the third time a casual gesture from Magnus makes him panic. It doesn't send him gasping into a tight corner of the bathroom this time, because fuck, Alec has better control of himself than that. He just freezes in place until Magnus hurriedly backs off. He just thinks about nothing else for the rest of the day.
He just hates himself a little more.
“Alexander,” Magnus says softly that night, as Alec slides into bed with him. Dread pools in Alec’s stomach, a sharp contrast with the softness of the satin sheets around him. He pulls the weighted blanket over himself, even though a part of him want to deny himself this comfort.
Magnus noticed his slip-up earlier, because how could he not? Alec feels awful about hurting him every time he shies away from a kind and thoughtful gesture.
“I can’t be what you want me to be,” he makes the first move. It’s easier than staring at his hands and waiting for the blow.
At the edge of his vision, Magnus’ eyes widen. “What do you mean?”
“I tried to stop. I tried to be more...natural, or something, like you said. But I can’t.”
Magnus tilts his head slightly, but doesn’t say anything. Alex can’t bring himself to look up at him, and he doesn’t know anymore if it’s because he’s ashamed, or simply because sometimes looking at Magnus, at his beauty and his shine and his compassion, is too much.
“I don't know how to do it,” he sighs. “This is who I am, Magnus. I need this...control, this grip on myself to function, otherwise I just fall apart. I don't know how to be anything else.”
“Alexander, I'm not asking you to be.”
Alex looks up in surprise, briefly meeting glamoured brown eyes. But Magnus’ eyes, real shape or not, are not where he gets his cues – they’re too intense, too confusing. No, it’s in the slight tilt of his mouth, the way his hand plays with the golden sheet, the furrow in his brow. Alec relaxes minutely.
“You’re not?”
“It would be rather hypocritical of me, wouldn’t it?” Magnus smiles softly, dropping his glamour. “All I want is for you to be comfortable, to be happy.”
Alec gently slips his arm under Magnus’ head in place of his pillow, feeling the weight of his boyfriend settle in the crook of his elbow. There’s a measure of relief there, the part of himself that always waits for the other shoe to drop, for the moment Magnus will tire of him, contented for now. “I am comfortable,” he murmurs. “Happier than I’ve ever been. There’s always going to be days that are harder than others.”
“Of course,” Magnus smiles. “But I want to do everything in my power to make even those a little less bad for you. I actually had a thought.”
“Um?” Now that his tension is fading a little, Alec feels like he could fall asleep. He shakes himself a little to stay attentive to Magnus’ words.
“What if it’s not about you changing something, dropping some kind of mask, but about adding something?”
“What do you mean?” Alex frowns, struggling to follow.
Magnus shifts a little against his arm, and grabs his hand. Rather than caress it with the tips of his fingers, like he sometimes likes to do, he squeezes it between his own hands.
“The things you do to...regulate yourself, your emotions, your...overloads,” Magnus starts. Alec can tell that he’s hesitating because he’s afraid of freaking him out, not because he doesn’t know how to word it. “They’re important. Necessary.”
Alec opens his mouth to argue, but no words come. He can’t actually deny that. He might hate himself for needing it, for needing the finger biting or the rocking or the myriad other little things he does that are frowned upon, but it gets so much worse when he tried to forbid himself that comfort. That’s what gets him to the gym or up on the roof, training until his hands are dripping blood. It’s how he ends up screaming himself raw in his pillow, hitting his head against the headboard of his bed until he’s too lightheaded to continue.
“From what I understand,” Magnus says slowly, squeezing Alec’s hand tighter, probably to check that he’s still listening, “there’s much more to that than the impulses your parents tried to train you out of. It’s about regulating sensory inputs, but also about...interacting with your environment. And I thought that it’s something we could explore together. Try to find new things that help and comfort you, rather than change what you already do.”
Alec closes his eyes, trying to process the sentence. The shine of the golden satin sheets against the light, their mixed scents in the bed, Magnus’ skin against his, he wants to get rid of it all so he can understand what Magnus is saying. Instead, he turns his hand around until he’s the one holding Magnus’. Magnus hasn’t removed his rings before bed like he usually does, he notices absently as he starts playing with them.
Magnus gives him a tiny smile. “What are you thinking?” he asks.
“You’re not like me,” Alec says. “How can we do this together? I don’t want everything to be about me.”
“Of course not,” Magnus fake-scoffs. “You know I’d never let that happen.”
Alec rolls his eyes. “Right. Seriously, though.”
“I meant it, when I said I want to meet you in the middle. Right now, you do most of the work of coming in my direction and I let you, because I don’t understand or because this translation is second nature to you by now. But I want to move in your direction too. Learn about how you experience the world. And maybe take some of that pressure off of you.”
“Magnus–” Alec starts. He doesn’t know what he wants to say. He’s not sure he knows what Magnus’ words mean, but he knows that this is a gift he never expected. He’s never even entertained the idea of someone else wanting to know him to that extent.
“I don’t know what it’s like, to be different the way you are,” Magnus says, stroking his arm with the hand Alec isn’t playing with. “But as a Downworlder, and a South Asian man in America, and an openly bi man who wears makeup, I do know what it’s like to live in a world that isn’t built for you, that doesn’t welcome someone like you. And I know that it can be very lonely. But you’re not alone, Alexander. Not anymore.”
Alec doesn’t feel the tears running from his eyes until his vision starts blurring, but he sees them mirrored in Magnus’ eyes. “I don’t know what it’s like to be any of those things,” he murmurs. “But you’re not alone either.”
And that’s the greatest gift they can offer each other.
 4.
“I think you might enjoy this,” Magnus says in the morning, over breakfast, holding out a little box. It’s Alec’s day off, so they have plenty of time to enjoy the morning – and to talk things through. Last night’s conversation went a long way toward making Alec feel better, but there’s still plenty to discuss.
He takes the box Magnus just conjured and opens it. Inside is a toy shaped a little like a spring, with alternating segments of black and white steel. Alec takes it out and it comes apart like an endless serpent, the segments articulated with each other. “What is it?”
“It’s a fidget toy,” Magnus answers. “I believe it’s called a tangle. I tried to make it visually pleasing, they’re usually made of brightly colored plastic.”
Alex smiles. “What is it for, though?” he asks, but his hands have already figured it out. Unconsciously, he’s started to tangle it around his fingers, spinning the curved segments around to change its shape.
“Having something to do with your hands?” Magnus offers hesitantly. “Please tell me if it’s making you uncomfortable. I don’t want to-”
“No, it’s okay,” Alec interrupts him. “I like it.” Given the sheer amount of time he spends wringing his hands or worrying at his nails, it might even be useful, though he doesn’t think he can get away with carrying it around at the Institute. “What?” he asks when Magnus keeps staring at him.
“Nothing,” Magnus shakes his head. “I honestly wasn’t expecting this to go so smoothly.”
Alec hangs his head in shame. He’s been making Magnus’ life hard, with his stupid panic. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you think that I didn’t appreciate your efforts.”
“No, no. I kept springing it on you with no warning. I was wrong to try to do this without talking it through with you the whole way.” Magnus gestures toward the couch area, where the pile of books is still growing. “After reading all this stuff, I think I forgot that we weren’t on the same wavelength, that just because I thought I’d figured something out, it didn’t mean you were ready for me to act on it. I tried to make gestures to show you that I understand you but...well, the truth is that I don’t. I’ll never understand some of you, and some will take time for me figure out.”
Alec opens his mouth to protest, but Magnus holds out a hand. “But this isn’t about understanding,” he continues. “It’s about accepting. It’s about standing by you and supporting you no matter how little I understand what’s happening in your head. I was still trying to force these things on you because I thought that, since I’ve read those books, I knew something of what you might need, but I don’t. You do. I should have asked you.”
Alec stares and works his jaw, a little stunned. His hands have figured out how to restore the tangle to its original shape of a spring, and he swirls it around one finger. “Thank you,” he says eventually, at a loss for words. It’s a lot. Magnus’ openness, his apology, is far from anything he braced himself for, and he doesn’t know what to do with it.
“Can I ask you one thing?” Magnus asks softly.
“Of course.” They still haven’t touched the breakfast they sat at the table for, but the beauty of magic is that they don’t need to worry about it getting cold.
“You didn’t react when I first got the books. Did you know what I was doing?”
Alec squeezes the tangle toy around his fingers, until it hurts a little. The pain helps him focus. “I’m not sure,” he says. “I never…I never had a word. For it. I've heard of autism, but I didn't...I don't know, make the connection? Not really. But then you...suddenly it was like...you were doing everything right. Things you shouldn't have known to do. Things that no one has ever done.”
He pauses, but Magnus doesn't try to speak, just lets him gather his thoughts.
“Like right now,” Alec chuckles. “Like you know that I struggle with talking sometimes. But you're not supposed to know that.”
“I'm not?” Magnus asks. “Because I knew, long before I read anything. I just didn't know what to do.”
Alec tilts his head. “You did?” They're going a little off track here, and he's lost the thread. But his surprise is real.
“Of course. You thought I never noticed?”
“People mostly don't. Except Izzy, she picks up on it more easily.”
“Then why is it so strange for me to pick up on it?” Magnus asks.
Alec shrugs. “I don’t know. I didn’t have a lot of expectations, coming into this relationship. I don’t have much to compare it to, you know?”
Magnus smiles. “Ah, right. Well, a life the length of mine gives you plenty of time to better understand the human psyche. And yet, you still surprise me every day.”
“Because I’m...autistic?” Alec feels his cheeks heat up. He’s never said the word before, never applied it to himself. It’s a strange feeling. It doesn’t roll quite right on his tongue, and yet it feels right, in a way. He’s autistic, and the implications of that are overwhelming.
“Because you’re autistic,” Magnus repeats pensively. “Because you’re selfless and beautiful and funny. Because you’re sarcastic and you say things I don’t expect, and you stand your own ground when by all rights you should be falling apart, and you fluster adorably when I try to flirt. Because you’re you, Alexander. And yes, your autism is a part of it.”
 5.
The changes are subtle, and they don’t make a huge impact on their relationship. Alec is incredibly relieved by that. Bit by bit, he stops expecting Magnus to realize that he’s too much to handle and get tired of him.
“I’m the one who’s usually too much,” Magnus tells him darkly, when Alec opens up about that particular fear.
There’s a well of emotions in his eyes when he says that that they’ll need to explore, at some point. Magnus has a lot of baggage, too, a long history of sticking out. Of being different. On days like this, Alec can’t remember how he ever thought that Magnus wouldn’t understand.
“It’s a good thing I can never get enough of you, then,” he offers simply, for now. Magnus isn’t ready to talk about it yet, about the people who’ve hurt him.
Magnus’ face softens immediately. “You really are a delight,” he smiles.
Alec beams at him and goes back to the book he’s holding. He’s very slowly making his way through the pile of books Magnus bought. Most of them aren’t meant to be read cover to cover anyway, and he’s currently picking through an anthology of texts by autistic writers.
He’s learning a lot. So much more than he expected, going in. He figured, he may not have had a word for it before, but he already knows himself, right? But there’s new words to put on things he’s never even thought about, new ideas to try, a whole new understanding of the world around him. Sure, he knows himself, but it turns out that he knows everyone else a lot less well than he thought he did.
And there is the new, incredible feeling of being understood. That there’s someone out there, a whole community of someones, who resemble him in the ways he always thought he was alone. For that alone, the books are worth everything. It’s akin to the feeling he had the first times he snuck away from the Institute, as a teenager, to go read gay romances in a secluded corner of the local library.
Magnus’ understanding is just as precious. He doesn’t push for anything, only supports Alec quietly. Even now, as they sit together on the couch reading, he’s attentive to the way Alec reacts to his touch, tightening his loose hold on Alec’s thigh as soon as Alec starts squirming in discomfort. He redirects Alec’s restless hand from tapping a pattern on his thigh toward his own beaded bracelets, offering them as a stim toy without even seeming to think about it.
Alec tries to focus on his book. The text is about flapping, and special education forbidding it. It’s poignant, but it’s not something Alec can really relate to. And yet, he’s been stuck on it for ten minutes, trying to pinpoint why his brain just won’t move on.
It finally comes in the form of memories. Stop  moving  your hands around and pay attention! Can’t you just  stay  still for once? It’s in Mom and Dad’s voices, in Hodge’s, every instructor Alec had before he successfully trained himself out of stimming and perfected his parade rest. He even heard it, full of annoyance, from Izzy – Jace came into their lives later, when Alex was already a good little soldier. But even know, his hands itch to clasp behind his back, and he unconsciously straightens his posture.
No.
“What’s wrong?” Magnus asks, seemingly casual, but Alec can tell that he’s paying close attention.
Alec shrugs, words failing him. How can he explain the storm of emotions inside him? His fingers twitch again and he stares at them, and behind them, at the book.
Flapping is the new terrorist-fist-bump, he reads.
Shadowhunters are always in full control of their movements, echoes in his head. A long-learned lesson. But no one ever asked of Izzy and Jace to stop laughing or joking or brooding or crying, not when they’re off the clock. That was only required of Alec. Because the way Alec behaves isn’t normal.
Because the way Alec communicates makes them uncomfortable.
Alec feels nausea gripping his stomach. He wants to cry, to scream – to move. “Alexander,” Magnus starts, sensing the change.
Alec shakes his head to stop him and he closes the book, firmly. “I want to try something,” he announces, like saying it aloud will unclench the part of him that’s rearing in terror right now.
“Go ahead, darling,” Magnus drawls, and maybe it’s the permission Alec needs.
He stares at his hand for a moment, and carefully, purposefully makes it flutter. It's like he doesn't know how, like something his body has forgotten how to do. He thinks of his bow, of the sting of the string against his fingers and flexes them, hitting the tips against his palm. The memory isn't quite there, but there's something, something right about it. His fingers find his other palm, his left hand, tapping softly there. He closes his right hand into a fist, and taps his knuckles against his left palm, listening to the soft noise it makes.
“How does it feel?” Magnus asks, his voice low like he doesn't want to interrupt the moment.
Alec shakes his head. “I don't know. It's like...I don't know how to do this. It doesn't feel natural.”
“You don't have to flap your hands to be autistic, you know. Or to be yourself.”
“I know, but...I think I could? I don't know if that makes sense.” He taps his hands some more, palm against palm, harder.
“It doesn't have to make sense,” Magnus smiles. “Just to feel right.”
Does it feel right? It feels ridiculous, childish, not suitable for a grown man. It feels like a rebellion, a fuck you to all the times he’s been told to sit still, to stop moving. It feels artificial and yet like it comes from deep inside at the same time. Something repressed and almost gone, an echo of a feeling long forgotten. Something he can learn again, and maybe learn himself in the process.
It feels forbidden. Terrifying.
It feels right.
