Summary: Tim's been kidnapped before. He doesn't know if he's getting out this time.

It had been three days since Tim had been kidnapped by the League of Assassins. This time was significantly less nice than the last, and then he’d been missing an organ.

He was in the same lavish rooms, with their silk sheets and gilded mirrors, but the lock on the door had been changed. Where Tim had once been allowed to come and go, he was now stuck here. The door locked from the outside, and the only other point of escape was the large balcony, where iron bars arched overhead. He was a Red Robin in a golden cage.

Meals came at regular times. A crossword puzzle came with his breakfast, and on his second day a copy of War and Peace came with lunch. He’d been stripped of all his trackers and gadgets when he got here, which had been replaced with the silks of the League.

Tim was well acquainted with kidnapping. Having been the only heir to the Drake fortune, he had been kidnapped twice as a child, once when he was three and once when he was eight. He didn’t remember much, other than the shrieks of police sirens when he’d finally been found. Once he started as Robin, the kidnappings began in earnest. He was never gone for longer than a night or two, and Bruce always saved him. He was Batman, that was what he did.

So Tim bided his time, sipping ginger tea and doing crossword puzzles and reading Tolstoy. Soon, Bruce would come.

On the fourth day, Tim received his first visitor. He was on the balcony, taking his breakfast under the bright desert sun. He looked up to see Ra’s al Ghul, the reflection of his jewelry practically blinding against the shadowy backdrop of Tim’s chambers. Tim took another bite of toast.

“Hello, Detective,” he drawled as Tim squinted up at him.

“Oh, hello,” Tim said quietly. “Have you made up your mind on whether or not you’re killing me yet?” Ra’s didn’t laugh, but Tim didn’t expect him to. He wasn’t known for his sense of humor.

“See, there’s only so many reasons you’d keep me here,” Tim continued. “You don’t need intel, because you already know everything about us. You don’t need money, because you’re richer than God. I’m either here because you want to trade me for something, you need me to code, or you still want that heir.”

A venomous smile spread on Ra’s face. “Clever boy.” The words stilled Tim, his toast abandoned on his plate. “Now, follow me.”

Ra’s swept out of the room and Tim followed, keeping sure to hold his head high. His mother would be proud. Even being led to his doom, he wouldn’t let the facade fall. As they walked through the Cradle, Tim refused to meet the eyes of the assassins that milled about. He could feel their gazes tear at him, but he let the wounds pile up.

Ra’s study was incredibly simple, but nice all the same. It looked like an older version of every board member’s home office. Tim despised it.

Ra’s gestured for him to sit in one of the stiff chairs, and Tim complied. The head assassin remained standing, his fingertips brushing over the manuscripts that lined the walls.

“I feel as if we know each other well enough by now, Detective. You spent quite a bit of time with us before you decided to defect. You know that I do not play, I win.” Tim stared ahead, trying his best to keep his face blank.

“So, here is what you will do. And you will do it, Detective. You will notify Batman that you are turning in your cape to work for me. You will tell him not to search for you.”

Tim cleared his throat. “And if I don’t?”

Ra’s smirked, as if he expected the question. “Then I will instruct the assassins following your civilian friends to put bullets in their skulls. I don’t believe Mr. Fox will appreciate losing two of his daughters in one day. I know Commissioner Gordon wouldn’t be a fan. Nor Ms. Ives.”

Tim nodded shallowly. “So it’s them or me?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “Why exactly do you want me so badly? Why not Damian or Bruce?”

Ra’s laughed darkly. “Because your spirit will be so much more fun to break.”

That night, when he was safely back in his beautiful cage, Tim began his letter.

Dear Bruce (and Dick and Jason and Babs and Cass and Damian and Steph),

Since my return to Gotham, something has been missing in my life. I’ve decided to come back to the League of Assassins in an attempt to solve that emptiness. This is of my own volition. Do not come looking for me, I do not want to be found. I love you all.

He fell asleep watching the moon shine through iron bars, wondering if this is how every criminal he ever put away felt.

It took two days for Ra’s to start giving Tim tasks around the Cradle. Small ones, mostly filing. Some putting pieces together. It felt as if even with all of Ra’s power over life and death, he didn’t know much about order. Tim slogged through the work, waiting for time to tick down. He fixed small loopholes and backdoors and monitored agents in the field. It was easy work, at least when Tim forgot about the trained killer hovering just outside his door.

At night, he scratched out notes on the pages of Tolstoy. Short snippets, like “I’m sorry” and “Thank you” and “I always loved you.” They’d never see the light of day, but they made him feel better.

During his free time, he fixed the computer wiring and did odd electrical tasks around the Cradle. It was as if no one there knew how to use a soldering iron. As much as the menial tasks frustrated him, they kept his hands busy and kept Ra’s off his back.

Rescue came two weeks after Tim Drake was kidnapped. He was in the main hall when the alarms of the breach sounded. Assassins streamed around him, all headed to their respectful stations. Tim headed to the control room.

The control room was small and filled with screens. A skylight gave the tiniest bit of natural light twenty feet above. Tim busied himself with the controls, monitoring the cameras and putting the last minute details on his plan.

Rapping came from the skylight, and Tim looked up to see Steph waving at him. He hesitated for half a moment, then nodded. She shattered the glass and rappelled down, landing with a quiet thud.

“Tim, here,” she whispered and pressed a comms unit into his hand. He nodded and placed it in his ear.

“I need all of you to listen to me. You need to leave,” he began, his voice hoarse from disuse.

“We’re not leaving you-” Dick butted in, but Tim cut him off.

“You have to. If you don’t, civilians die. People we love die. I-I can’t let that happen.” Stephanie placed a hand on his arm, but he shrugged it off. “I have a plan, but I can’t pull it off if you’re here.”

“We’ll let you take point on this, Red Robin.” Bruce’s low voice calmed the nerves racing through Tim’s veins. If Batman said it would be okay, it would be okay.

“You have three minutes to evacuate,” Tim finished, then slipped the comm unit out of his ear.

“Tim…” Stephanie whispered, reaching out for him. This time, he let her hold his hand, running his thumb over the seams of her gloves.

“Hey Stephie,” he murmured, trying his best to muster a smile. “You have to go, okay? You have to be a hero. For me.” She shook her head, opened her mouth to say something, but he pressed a kiss to her forehead.

“Go,” he urged, and she nodded. With one last squeeze of her hand, she was grappling back through the skylight. He watched as she disappeared, and tried not to let his heart break too much.

He readied the plan, fingers flying faster than he could remember ever doing before. Hands trembling, he placed the comms unit back in his ear just as it crackled to life.

“We’re all out, Red Robin. We’re a kilometer away, in one of the nearby caves. What’s your ETA?”

Tim smiled shakily. “I’m afraid I won’t be joining you. The Cradle’s undergoing self-destruction. I set up the protocol while Ra’s thought I was doing busy work.”

“Tim, you can’t be serious.” For the first time in years, Tim thought he heard fear in Bruce’s voice. “We can still get you out.”

“Someone needs to make sure it goes through with no interference. If Ra’s wants me so bad, he can have me.” Tim suddenly became aware of the tears rolling down his cheeks. “Thank you for saving me. Thank you for loving me. Now it’s time to let me save you.”

Despite the layered protests in his ear, Tim pressed the figurative big red button. As tears stained his face, he smiled. At least he would go out saving people. That’s all he had ever wanted to do.

Wysing Arts Centre are delighted to invite A---Z (Anne Duffau) to curate the eleventh edition of Wysing Polyphonic, our annual festival of music and sound.

The Ungoverned looks at how we can deconstruct normativity through collaboration, exchange, texts, ephemeral gestures and other languages. This year’s programme emphasises the importance of difference and diverse ways of communicating: the morphing of words to choreographies, soundscapes, dialects and voices.

For the first part of The Ungoverned, five international musicians have created mixes and soundscapes experimenting between sound, music and spoken word and responding to the idea of being ungovernable and defying norms. These recordings will be presented on WysingBroadcasts.Art over the month of August and will present collective minds exploring a positive present and rewriting the past.  

The festival’s second part will be presented as a special live broadcast of readings from three international artists, writers and poets and will be followed by a newly commissioned performance from choreographer and dancer Maëva Berthelot and musician Coby Sey.

Mixes: 

Christelle Oyiri Aka  CRYSTALLMESS  is a Paris-based multidisciplinary artist. She also goes by the moniker CRYSTALLMESS when she operates as a composer and DJ and released music on experimental electronic music labels such as PAN or Country Music in 2019, and self-released her EP Mere Noises in 2018.   “The mix INTROLUDO is built around Interludes and Intros - sonic interstices that often allow musicians to be their most vulnerable and reveal the psyche behind their project.”  Her work highlights the intersection between forgotten mythologies, memory and alienation. Whether she explores black french music erasure with her film and performance Collective Amnesia : In Memory of Logobi (2018), reflects on the idea of progress and linearity of time with Necessary Evil (2019) or dives into her own family history and indulges in sonic hauntology with Kiss & Tell (2020), music always occupies a place of choice in her work. During a residency at Wysing in August 2020 she will be working on her new sonic piece Poison Paradise 0, demystifying the supposed heavenly nature of the French Caribbean life.  

mobilegirl is a Munich-born-and-raised and Berlin-based DJ and producer.   Her endeavours are best described as a constant stretch of the comfortable and the finding of a new comfort therein.  Reflecting a general personal stance, as well as a result of her upbringing, mobilegirl's inspirations draw from a broad pool that makes her rather difficult to categorize.   Being quite uninhibited but thoughtful in her selection, her style behind the decks is focused on a highly energetic dancefloor but allows for emotionality, for softer moments but also attention-demanding breaks. A refreshing combination that gained her traction very early on in her career, playing CTM festival and international events within the first year of moving to Berlin - the second year of making music. She has later been signed to DISCWOMAN.   With her own productions mobilegirl has made a name for herself with club edits of R'n'B classics; a predilection for which draws through all of her work and the only one more prevalent influence being video game scores of various kind. The latter accordingly set the foundation for her debut EP "Poise" released in 2017. A string of tracks that seemed untypically mellow but were created in an effort to decelerate and invite the listener to do the same.   This project turned mobilegirl's inspiration into praxis as it opened up the doors for her to work on scores of films and art installations the years after.  

Brazilian producer and vocalist  LYZZA “has risen to become one of electronic music’s most promising young avant pop producers” - Beatport. In the last few years she’s familiarised herself with the alternative music scene and has worked herself from Amsterdam, where she spent her teenage years, to London where she currently lives. LYZZA   is a Producer/Vocalist & DJ recognised by platforms such as Pitchfork,  Subbacultcha and The Quietus. LYZZA is resident on NTS Radio and was named 'One of the artists shaping the future of music' by Crack Magazine. While teaching herself how to produce in her bedroom and working towards what would be her first release ‘Powerplay’; LYZZA kickstarted her career in 2016 playing DJ-sets at vogue balls in Amsterdam, but quickly paved her way into international clubs all over Europe & Asia, eventually becoming a resident at Amsterdam’s favourite club: De School, and Mykki Blanco’s tour DJ after the two connected.  Since her debut EP, Powerplay, exploded in 2017 (and has been used as soundtrack by CHROMAT and Mugler in their runway shows), LYZZA has been one to keep up with. IMPOSTER, her second EP released in 2018 solidified LYZZA as an composer, lyricist and more than just a club kid. 2019 has seen LYZZA take herself into a more poppier music realm and broke her tracks into Radio-waves with her latest 6-track release “DEFIANCE”. Which includes a collaboration with Hot Chips’ Joe Goddard and Jungle’s Tom McFarland. Her previous releases had already set her up as a brilliant singer and songwriter, but they were darker, less spacious, and mostly club focused. 

AUDINT is a sonic research group exploring the weaponization of vibration, developing cartographies of liminal waveformed perception (unsound), and investigating the ways in which frequencies are utilised to modulate our understanding of presence/non-presence, entertainment/torture, and life/death. In 2019, AUDINT published Unsound:Undead (Urbanomic), a collection of essays, featuring texts by prominent artists and theorists, on the topic of sound. Hannah Catherine Jones (aka Foxy Moron) is a London-based artist, scholar, multi-instrumentalist, radio presenter and DJ (BBC Radio 3 - Late Junction, NTS - The Opera Show), composer, conductor and founder of Peckham Chamber Orchestra – a community project established in 2013. Jones is currently an AHRC DPhil scholar at Oxford University for which the ongoing body of work The Oweds will be presented as a series of live and recorded audio-visual episode-compositions using disruptive sound as a methodology of institutional decolonisation.

Poets: 

Rachel Long is a poet and the founder of Octavia - Poetry Collective for Womxn of Colour. Rachel's poetry and prose have been published widely, most recently in Filigree, Mal, Granta and The Poetry Review. She is assistant tutor on the Barbican Young Poets programme. Her Forward Prize-nominated debut collection, My Darling from the Lions, is forthcoming from Picador in August 2020. 

Whiskey Chow  London-based performance artist and Chinese drag king, Whiskey’s art practice engages with broadly defined political issues, covering a range of related topics: from female and queer masculinity, problematizing the nation-state across geographic boundaries, to stereotypical projections of Chinese/Asian identity. Her performance is interdisciplinary, combining embodied performance with moving image and experimental sound pieces.   As an artist-curator, Whiskey launched, led and performed in Queering Now 酷兒鬧 in 2020 (as part of CAN Festival). Queering Now is a curatorial programme amplifying marginalized voices of Chinese/Asian queer diaspora in the West.  Whiskey has been involved in feminist and LGBTQ activism in China since 2011. She contributed to and performed in For Vaginas’ Sake 將陰道獨白到底 (2013)’ (original Chinese version of The Vagina Monologues), and curated the first Chinese LGBTQ music festival, Lover Comrades Concert 愛人同志音樂會 (2013), Guangzhou.  Whiskey's recent performances include: The Moon is Warmer than the Sun, Queering Now, Rich Mix, London (2020); Unhomeliness, Tate Modern, London; Whiskey the Conqueror, Tate Britain, London (2018); Purely Beautiful New Era (ft. Haocheng Wu), Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Great Conversation, Uppsala Konstmuseum, Uppsala (2017). 

Tanaka Fuego is a slam winning, multi published, international spoken word artist. Who has performed to sold out shows at Edinburgh’s Fringe festival and at Vault festival, has worked  with British Vogue and given diversity and inclusion talks to the likes of Recorded future. Fuego is a BBC Extra words first alumni, a Roundhouse Slam finalist  and also a roundhouse poetry resident, alongside being commissioned by the BBC. He is a black, queer artist whose poems cross leaps and boundaries throughout his Identity.  

Performers: 

Maëva Berthelot   choreographs, performs and teaches.   Her mode of working unfolds along the threshold between experimental, performative and collaborative approaches.  Drawing from improvisational and somatic practices, her research is rooted in a movement practice which is an ongoing inquiry into the themes of consciousness, transformation, healing, death and rebirth. Her interest lies in creating cathartic spaces in which the emotional and sensational states related to loss, grief and change can be explored, processed and assimilated into conscious experience.  Drawing attention to the tension between conscious/unconscious, rehearsed/improvised, visible/invisible and on the play between material/immaterial realms, her work explores ways to steer the body into trance, dreamlike and self hypnotic states with an emphasis on the importance of preparation in order to access those states in which the body can be utilised as a sensitive, awakened and connected vessel.  Maëva was born in L'Haÿ-les-roses, Paris in 1985 and lives in South London.  She has practised in companies and institutions such as Royal Opera House, Hofesh Shechter company, Batsheva & Riksteatern, Emanuel Gat company, Sadler's wells, Clod Ensemble, Rambert, Laban and The Place. 

Coby Sey is a vocalist, musician and DJ from South East London who offers a shifting, disorienting vision of club music.

Anne Duffau is a cultural producer, researcher, and founder of A---Z; an exploratory and nomadic curatorial platform that explores artistic practices and knowledge exchange through collaborations, presentations, soundscapes, screenings and discussions. A---Z shares discursive practices that challenge preconceived ideas of race and gender identities, and challenges the powers that have shaped our (hi)stories. Anne is co-curator of the Dark Water event series, with artist Tai Shani, and co-founder of the night programme Décalé, with Chooc Ly Tan. She has collaborated with a range of projects and organisations including ArtLicks, Southwark Park Galleries, Mimosa House and Danielle Arnaud Gallery, London Please Stand By, or-bits .com, PAF Olomouc Czech Republic & Tenderflix. Anne has previously run the StudioRCA Riverlight, London programme (2016-2018) and is currently a Tutor at the School of Arts and Humanities, and is the acting Lead in Critical Practice, within the Royal College of Art’s Contemporary Art Practice Programme. Ten random facts

1.    Sugis hails from a secluded inbred cannibalistic fishing colony in the La Noscean area and is one of the few children whose parents forked the family tree. Because of this, she was seen as an outsider by most, if not all, of the other Kevades. 2.    She has known Tsagaan since pre-calamity. After rescuing him by bribing off Brass Blades he had since become her roommate, confidant, and eventually her husband and more recently a father. 3.    Her accent is far thicker than normal Limsan and is harder to understand. This has caused quite of bit of people in her inner circle and out to be confused by what she says. When she's angry or excited it sounds like she's speaking in tongues. 4.     Due to an event in her life where her step-mother killed her (and her first reanimation as a WoL), Sugis has trust issues with people showing up saying they are related to her. She is known to trust outsiders far more than anyone with the last name Kevade. 5.     The scar on her cheek was given to her by Tsagaan's horn while sharing their first kiss. She will tell the tale of her scarred back, but will never tell anyone of the scar on her cheek because she finds it embarrassing. 6.     Having been a mercenary, Sugis still has connections which she uses to her advantage. She is also known as a slightly exaggerated figure known as the 'Red Wolf'. The stories often differ from person to person. 7.      Because of her upbringing, her death, and partly due to her genetics, Sugis is missing a small trigger that keeps her from killing others when flying off the handle. To this day, she has only ever killed one innocent person. 8.     Sugis' sharp teeth are not just for show. She uses them in close combat when her enemy has vitals unprotected. Her teeth are a tradition in her family that proves they lured prey into their colony. 9.     The nickname most people call her by is 'Red' for her scarlet hair. It use to be red up until an event triggered a genetic aetheric trait on her mother's side that permanently altered it to be white. She will lie about everything from where she was born, to what she does, to who she is. My Zelda necklace/choker, which is just some basic woven bracelet (brown with a gold Zelda emblem), but my wrists were too bony to actually wear it (it kept fallin’ over D: ) so my friend modified it to be a choker for me! It’s my favorite thing. And also, a silver pendant necklace that’s little gem-covered (fake gems, obvi) lock with a tiny key. I used to like collecting keys as a child, and often thought of myself as a lock and key when I was little, so it’s one of my favorite things as well. :3

I prefer to be outside. I was always a dirt child growing up, and I love being outside in the sun or clouds or rain, in the grass or up in trees. However, since I currently live in the city, I prefer the inside, because there’s no people. So basically: when there’s no people/it’s nature-y, outside. When there’s people/it’s a city, inside.

I. Hm. I’m not sure, as I haven’t asked that kind of question (despite desperately wanting to). I think my friend TH said it was great how everything could be a game for me. I don’t know that it’s weird or that I have a really ‘weird’ fear. I had a fear of mirrors at night, once, because I was afraid if I looked in one I’d see the Chuckie doll in the reflection. It started off on what would seem to be a sex dream, and then I turned away from the random dude my brain conjured up for one second for it to be replaced with my mom. And I was like. So disappointed. And she was just like “:D Hey sweetheart, what’chya doin’?” I woke up and was very annoyed.

Dawn, like literally when the sun is just barely showing in the sky and the skies and clouds are washed with pinks and blues and no one else in the world has quite woken up yet. A prerequisite to enjoying this time of day is having pulled an all-nighter, of course, because I am morning person, but not a “waking up” person. Other than that, midnight, when the moon is high and the world is quite.

I put Rose in my mom’s purse for her to make sure it didn’t get thrown away or lost. She lost it though, and I never saw Rose again. I miss her very much

I’d like ta say m’ pretty loyal.  Hecka loyal.  Ya get me on your side, n I would be a ringer in ya’re fight anytime.  Other t’en that...I’m pretty bad at cookin’.  Try as I might, haha.  Or I guess I wear m’heart on m’sleeve, t’ats what some peeps say.  I unno if t’at is true or not.

91. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? M’height.  Yeah, m’short.  Pretty short.  People are kinda rude bout it from time to time.  It’d be neat if I could grow like...two feet, yeah.  N’tower over everyone else!  ...cept for tose giants.

92. Are you generally introverted or extroverted? Extraverted, I tink.  I mean, I gotta be as a sales guy.

93. Do you like yourself? Yeah!  If I didn’t, I’d change it, yah!

94. Do you have a daily routine? How do you feel if your day is interrupted? Mm...t’only ting I have as a constant is wakin’ up ta Polly cookin’ breakfast.  Usually its toast’n’eggs.  She makes me lunch too!  But other t’en tat its a real toss up what m’doing.  Usually workin.  When it hits eight or so I head home, take a bath, n’ten get some shut eye.

95. What goal do you most want to accomplish in the next six months? Your lifetime? Gettin’ Polly ta smile for realsies, none of t’at fake smiles she gives me in t’mornin’.  And other t’en that...it’d be nice ta get a smile or two from some pretty ladies.

96. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? M’aybe avin’ one of my own shops.  Marriage?  Eh.  Kiddos would be nice.  Its hard ta see that far in ta future, tho, especially when none of t’at stuff is really in motion.

97. If you could choose, how would you want to die? Eh, I ain’t one for melodramatics, but if m’gonna croak, I wanna go out wit a bang.  Savin’ someone or doin’ somethin’ brave.
