Hannah had made some food for Lewis and Annie. She set the plate of food down at the table. The black haired female noticed the bright moonlight of the full moon. “A beautiful moon out tonight” she thought to herself.
“Lewis! Annie! Time to eat” said Hannah. Sounds of small claws hit the floor as they sounded like they were coming to the dining room. “Coming, Hannah” replied Lewis as he came into view. The Cheshire smilodon kitten came into the room with his baby sister biting his antlers. The black haired female’s eyes went wide.
“W..what happened to y..you two?” asked Hannah, both scared and nervous.
“Oh! I forgot to mention that we are wereanimals. Actually, a werecheshiresmilodon” replied Lewis as he sat Annie on the table. The small kitten quickly dug into the food.
“Wait, you mean that werewolves are real?” she asked.
“Yep and other wereanimals too. The band are wereanimals too.” he replied.
“Oh my god! People online will go nuts over this!” replied the black haired female.
“No, no, please don’t let anyone know about this, '' Lewis quickly said in a scared and worried tone.
“Why?” asked Hannah.
“If people find out that we are wereanimals, we will be put in serious danger. Wereanimal hunters will keep up, labs will do horrible tests on us, and we will be sold on the weremarket.” replied the feline.
Hannah looked shocked at this news. She nods her head. “I will keep this as a secret and will not tell anyone” she said.
“Thank you,” Lewis replied with a soft smile.
Meanwhile with the band, they were in their wereforms around a fire. They were eating some marshmallows, except for Zoot. “Another marshmallow?” asked Moog.
“Oh, yeah” replied Dr. Teeth
“Anybody else?” asked the black haired male.
“So, we’ve been sitting under the stars here for a few hours,” said Nora.
“But still no music flowing, huh?” she added.
They all shake their heads no. “Maybe we all just need to open up and dig a little deeper,” said Label Lady.
“She’s all yours” said Teeth as his tail move the shovel close to her.
“Ew. No” replied Nora. “Maybe we’ll figure out what’s holding you back,” the black haired female added.
“Like, why Teeth won’t commit to anything you write, and why Floyd hates all of it” she said.
“You know, like, explore your feelings. Your failures. Your fears” Nora added.
“I say we, like, dance it out” replied Jancie. Lips made a lion sound to agree with the doe. They all dance a little, just moving side to side. The Cheshire smilodon chuckles.
“Janice, this isn’t another problem for you to solve,” replied Nora. The band continues to dance.
“It sure does feel dancy” said the pink fur werewolf.
“Okay, okay, fine. What if I go first?” asked the black haired female.
“Wait, really?” asked Moog.
“What, you’re just gonna unpack your deepest failures and fears, just right in front of us?” he asked.
“We’ve all got our issues, right?” she replied.
“If I’m being totally honest, I definitely thought I’d be way further along in life by now” she added.
“I don’t know how old I have to be for my life to finally take off” said the black haired female.
“I don’t even want it all,” she added.
“Maybe just a cute little house. A partner. Preferably handsome, "the Label Lady said.
“6 '2, super driven. We compete for success in a healthy way, while we raise 2.5 kids. That's the national average” she added.
“I mean, really, is it too much to ask to just wanna spread my wings and fly?” Nora asked as she looked at the stick in her hand that was holding her marshmallow. The black haired female got up and stood.
“For I am a falconer.” she said. A small falcon sat on her arm and some falcon screeches filled the air.
“Like my father before me,” Label Lady added.
“His name was Parvesh. And I am his daughter!” she added.
“Nora?” asked Moog in shock and confusion. Nora didn’t have a falcon on her arm, it was in her head. She was having some type of trip like she took drugs.
“Nora. The falconer. Master of the air beasts” she said with her eyes wide.
“Are you okay?” asked the black haired male, worried. Nora starts petting the air over her right arm. “You good?” he asked.
Zoot picks up the bag of marshmallows and hands it to Moog. “Here. I don’t do sugar. Rots your brain” said the sloth. The black haired male checked the bag and noticed the date on it. His eyes grew huge in shock.
“Zoot,” he said. “Zoot, this bag expired in ‘92” Moog added.
“Oh, good. We still got a month left” replied Zoot.
“What? No! No, no, no, no. That was, like, 30 years ago!” the black haired male replied.
“Everybody! You’ve been eating these marshmallows all night” Moog said in a panic tone.
“And this bag is super expired!” he added.
“You know what? I’m sure it’s fine. There’s no reason to panic” the black haired male said as he tried to calm down. He throws the bag into the fire which causes the fire to turn green as Zoot’s glowing eyes. They all look at it in shock. The fire returned to normal.
“You should try using a stick,” said the sloth.
“Okay, we’re good, right?” asked Moog.
“It’s just old marshmallows,” he added.
“We are all gonna be fine, all right?” the black haired male asked.

The sonic backbone of the track is primarily based on a sample I took from Ichiko Aoba’s ‘asleep among endives’. When I first heard this track I fell in love with her ethereal, lullaby-like singing, and upon revisiting it recently, I knew it would be perfect for my piece. I took out small sections I liked and placed them into a repeating structure, shown below.
I used Logic’s built in FlexPitch function to develop a melody and also increased the formant to evoke the idea of youth, along with a hearty helping of reverb.
At this point, I had developed an 8-bar chord progression I liked. My music theory and understanding of chords is still limited at this stage, so I’m having trouble describing the chords I picked in a musical way, but essentially I toyed around with different progressions until I found something that sounded comfortable and warm but with some darker tones as well (see image below). For the instrument, I used some soft synths from Synclavier V, to which I decreased the brightness and added a phaser to create a mellow, shimmering color.
Stepping back a bit now to the intro section, I used two seventh chords and a combination of synths [detailed later on]. The main focus of this section is to set up the scene - I used old analog TV sounds I found from YouTube and a repeating motif of distant television dialogue - sourced from the film ‘High and Low’ by Akira Kurosawa, one of my favourite films that I first saw on TV on a random foreign movies channel.
For the drums in this section (shown below) I used Logic’s Drum Machine Designer to sequence a basic boom-bap style beat. The sounds were loaded in from cutting a loop from Apple Loops. I added a decent amount of compression to the drums and cut out a lot of higher frequencies using EQ. I also applied Izotope’s free Vinyl plugin that simulates lo-fi aesthetics such as dust, scratch and wear.
After the drums are introduced, the 8-bar segments play twice. Another prominent feature of this section are two melodies I played on my MIDI keyboard. One is a filtered, bendy lead and the other a soft brassy synth sound, both slightly altered patches from Arturia’s Analog Lab V. The two melodies could be described as having a sort of call and response dynamic. I enjoy the soothing way they interact with each other as well as the vocal sample.
Towards the end of this subsection, another instrument is faded in to smoothen the transition into the ‘bridge’ section. It’s a stripped back version of the second part of the chord progression, focusing on the more minor sounds. It’s a simple but effective synth patch I developed in Arturia’s Minimoog plugin with two oscillators, with one oscillator fine-tuned to create a small wavy detuned effect.
After the drums are cut, the elements are stripped back - the vocal sample is shifted to a sparser sequence, and the slightly detuned chords lead us downwards. The bass [which is a simple 3 oscillator moog sound] continues but now following the lead chords in a descending fashion.
As we approach section B, a higher note is added on top of the chords to cement the spooky feeling. A wavy, distant synth patch voices a sparse version of the melody featured in Section B to prime the listener's ear for the impending change. I programmed a kick drum that creates an underlying pulse, and an Apple Loop ‘Dark Automation Topper’ is layered underneath to complement this in the second bar.
Also notable in this section is a distorted, screechy guitar texture I sourced by cutting up an Apple Loop named ‘Grinding Guitar Riff’ and pitching it up, EQ-ing and adding reverb and delay to taste. I also used the ‘Tremelo’ plugin to automate panning. This guitar texture carries through Section B as well. The result is a screeching feedback texture that cuts into the soundscape, and drives us towards the nightmare.
SECTION B:
The primary players in this section are a heavy, crunchy distorted electric guitar and a nimble synth bass that climbs and falls, both with and against the guitar.
The guitars are an Omnisphere sample ‘Your Guitar is on Fire’. I played around with the timbre and filters, and added a pedalboard to increase fuzz. I started off originally with just one guitar, but ended up adding another voice in a higher octave to fill out the sound, to achieve the layer-cake orchestration. The higher guitar alternates between playing a harmony and counter melody that contributes to the intense and aggressive feeling of this section. The guitars describe the story of tumbling through the hallway as halls are closing in.
The guitars are complemented by the bass line; they are simple moog patches [for mini v3] I designed with two triangle oscillators. They carry us through a frenzy-like ascending and descending pattern. The top instrument underpins the ‘dun-dun-dun’ pattern that begins each bar, and resonates as a lower frequency to create an ‘oomph’.
The percussion in this section is also very manic. I sequenced this again with Logic’s drum machine designer, this time with a heavy focus on the kick drum pulse and repeating patterns. The drums are sourced from various free drum kits on the internet [sources for all sounds are listed in a separate post], and some from Logic’s library of drums. Many of the snare hits and metallic sounds use reverb and saturation to help them better fit into the mix. There is a small amount of compression on all the drums, but with a longer attack time to allow the transient to provide that shock.
The melody reaches the climax and the guitars are stripped back to the simpler pulse we saw in the bridge at the end of Section A. The guitars play a slower melody, letting each note ring out and eventually fade. The synth brass we hear in Section A leads us back into the mellower tones of Section A.
SECTION A/CLOSING:
The brass is the leading melody line, singing a gentle victory over the familiar chords and cuts of the vocal sample from Section A. The warm feeling is back, but it is accompanied by residuals from Section B - the bassline is more lively, playing a more dynamic pattern. The screeching guitar textures also sporadically interject, reminding us that although the nightmares are over, our monsters still lay dormant in that dark hallway.

The influential sound machine has been used by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Dr. Over the following decades, music technologies would explore the artistic applications of the vocoder, whose robotic vocal articulations would soon find their way into mainstream music, television, films, and games. During WWII, the US military used this advancement to electronically encode classified audio messages that could be reconstituted on the receiving end. In the 1930s, Bell Labs introduced the technology as a telecommunications device that could deconstruct the most fundamental elements of human speech and then reconstruct a new electronically synthesized voice. "The history of the vocoder is as unique as the sound it produces. The Moog 16 Channel Vocoder’s analog voice circuits, derived from the original schematic, are hand-soldered at the Moog Factory in Asheville, North Carolina to preserve the original instrument’s classic sound." Originally introduced in 1978 (and heard most famously on the title track of Giorgio Moroder’s E=MC2), the instrument has been used to transmute vocals, transform synthesizers, and electronically encode sound for decades. Allowing CV control of the Drag parameter, the Afterneath can be played melodically and constrained to different scales and pitch classes based on the selected Mode, allowing sequenced reverbs that form a counterpoint against the sounds that feed them.Ī powerful new tool for sonic exploration of the unreal, the Afterneath module marks an exciting step of one of the most interesting pedal manufacturers into the world of modular synths.Īfter more than 40 years, the Moog 16 Channel Vocoder is officially back in production. Diffused echoes bounce off distant walls, and sonic ghosts emerge from soft, washy reflections and short, chattering delays. Expanding on the original Afterneath design with additional reverb modes and the addition of CV control, Afterneath Eurorack is a great way to add some space to any Eurorack system.Īfterneath excels at reverbs that evoke a sense of unrealistically huge, empty spaces. "Afterneath is Earthquaker's first foray into producing Eurorack modules, adapting their cult classic reverb pedal into a washy, shimmering tool for modular synthesists. There really is simply too many features to list and explore here." You can get stuff out of this that you simply can't get anywhere else (or without spending huge sums of money on rare individual Blue Lantern modules). Given the ton of patchpoints and built-in modulation paths, this is a tweakers dream synth. Filter FM is there, the envelopes are loopable, and the delay parameters have cv inputs to modulate them in real time. Yes - you can have more than one selected (or all 3) at a given time.įrequency Modulation (FM) of the oscillators is possible (linear or exponential). The filter - LP, BP, and HP individually selectable. There's also Noise - with a Tune knob to adjust the kind of noise being generated. All 6 outputs have individual level controls in the mixer and a waveform selection switch.

The oscillators have 2 separate waveform outputs plus a Sub-oscillator. Two oscillators, filter, 2 envelopes, 2 LFO, delay.īut that's not the whole story. Pulse Width: Go back and keep tweaking the Pulse Width until the tone sounds right. You cand find some demos of the Dwarf Star in previous posts here. Reverb: Small-medium Size, and cut out most of the Reverb’s highs so it’s just a nice warm round ambience.

Enough Modulation amount to create a nice bright attack transient.Īmp Envelope: Same settings as Filter Envelope but make the Decay and Release a bit longer, around 170 ms so you can hear the Filter Envelope’s full shape. And then bring the Cutoff down to around Noon, which will then be modulated by…įilter Envelope: 0 Sustain, quick Decay and Release around 110 ms. And then bring down the higher oscillator a little bit.įilter: 24 dB Lowpass. And then pan one a fair amount left, and the other a fair amount right to get that width. Both set to Pulse Waves, with a Pulse Width pretty close to square, but not quite all the way square. Oscillator: Two oscillators, one octave apart. I tinkered around with this one (awesome track by the way). The FM/sync tone may just be two Pulse Waves set at just the right width.
