EABS - Reflections of Purple Sun - reimagining Tomasz Stańko's 1973 album Purple Sun
The band's debut album Repetitions... was dedicated to Krzysztof Komeda. This time, the band picked up the entire Purple Sun album, which Tomasz Stańko recorded half a century ago. From the POV of Purple Sun fans, a hard-to-find and somewhat forgotten album, it may seem like a doomed undertaking. However, in order to pay tribute to one of the most iconic figures of Polish jazz, it was worth embarking on this mission and attempting to engage in a non-verbal conversation with the Slavic spirit that Master Tomasz Stańko undoubtedly was. What was the essence of Purple Sun? Tomasz Stańko's record relied heavily on rhythm, one could even say that it was its central element. The EABS version is thus a study in rhythm. In other words, it is a reflection on rhythm. Therefore, the metaphor hidden in the word Reflections appears in the title, referring to the reflection of light – a reflex, representing a different energy enclosed in time and space, but half a century later. Olaf Węgier - Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Percussion; Jakub Kurek - Trumpet, Sequential Take 5; Paweł “Wuja HZG” Stachowiak - Bass guitar; Marcin Rak - Drums, Drum Machine; Marek “Latarnik” Pędziwiatr - Nord Stage 3, Moog Voyager, Upright Piano; Graphic design: Animisiewasz

EABS meets Jaubi - In Search of a Better Tomorrow - jazz innovators from Poland and Pakistan collaborate on what may be the world fusion album of the year
A few years ago, a very interesting relationship began to develop. A bridge was built out of Jaubi's releases on Astigmatic Records and the increasingly frequent collaborations between musicians from Europe and Asia - out of Latarnik's trip to Pakistan resulting in the widely acclaimed album Nafs at Peace and Zohaib, Dhani and Ali's revisit to Poland, which has been recorded as the EABS meets Jaubi In Search of a Better Tomorrow longplay.
Wrocław and Lahore are almost 7,000 kilometers apart. And despite this immense distance that separates the EABS and Jaubi musicians, the two bands find a surprising amount of common ground that determines their musical explorations. These include both a strong attachment to locality and respect for tradition, a penchant for weaving in some hip-hop elements, and the basis of a love of improvisation and spiritual jazz. It was therefore only a matter of time before they joined forces. And so, they proceeded to build a (cross)cultural bridge between Poland and Pakistan. A bridge whose pillars are Hindustani ragas, polish jazz understood in a variety of ways, and brotherhood in sound. This merger's finale is surprising to such an extent that it is difficult to pigeonhole this collaboration in any way. They met through the Get Your Jazz Together programme, which was launched by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute to help build such bridges. The following day after Jaubi's premiere concert at the OFF Festival in Katowice, the musicians went to Monochrom Studio in Kłodzko Valley, where they spent a week making music together, exchanging ideas and compositions. The outcome of the collaboration surprised them all, materializing in rather dark shades. So how did this happen, given that the recordings were realized in picturesque natural circumstances mid-summer? It was only yesterday that the pandemic restrictions were lifted, the inflation is raging, Russia has invaded Ukraine and no one in our region can be sure of peace anymore, while Pakistan has faced the worst floods in years. So much upheaval has been delivered by the world in recent times that the experience of the past has left its mark even on a sunny present day. Against all odds, however, the musicians are seeking solace, hoping that the tomorrow that is yet to come will finally bring something better. Even after the darkest night, however, comes day. It is known to the group from Lahore, who, often challenged by life, have already sent prayers for peace through their previous album. This is also known to the band from Wrocław, whose musical paths are inextricably bound up with the difficult and painful history of their homeland, and who have already experienced the era of unearthing their foundations and cosmic escapism in the spirit of Sun Ra. Today, they are walking swiftly towards the sun, all together, a group of eight artists whose lives are separated by their place of birth – the cultural education they received and the musical tradition they grew up in – but who are united by that one phrase, melody or emotion which gave origin to each of the compositions collected on the album titled In Search of a Better Tomorrow. Members of EABS: Marek “Latarnik” Pędziwiatr - Grand piano, Fender Rhodes Mark II, Nord Stage 2, Moog Voyager; Marcin Rak - Drums; Paweł “Wuja HZG” Stachowiak - Bass guitar, Moog Little Phatty; Olaf Węgier - Saxophones: tenor, sopran; bass clarinet; Jakub Kurek - Trumpet; Members of Jaubi Ali Riaz Baqar - Guitar Kashif Ali Dhani - Tabla, Vocals Zohaib Hassan Khan - Sarangi Graphic design: Sainer Text: Filip Kalinowski Translation: Magda Marcinkowska Photo: Hubert Misiaczyk

Understanding the Emerald Ash Borer and Protecting Your Trees
Emerald ash borers are tiny, metallic-green beetles native to Asia that have become a formidable adversary for ash trees across North America, wreaking havoc and leaving a trail of destruction. Understanding the threat it poses and the measures to combat it is crucial for preserving the green canopy that graces our landscapes.
Identification and Lifecycle
The emerald ash borer is deceptively beautiful with its vibrant emerald hue. However, its lifecycle is anything but benign. Adult emerald ash borers lay eggs on the bark of ash trees. Once hatched, larvae burrow into the tree, disrupting its internal circulation system. This disturbance weakens the tree's structure, making it susceptible to diseases and other stressors.
Signs of Infestation
Detecting an emerald ash borer infestation in its early stages is challenging, but sure signs may indicate trouble. Thinning canopies, unusual woodpecker activity, D-shaped exit holes in the bark, and serpentine galleries under the bark created by larval feeding are all potential indicators. By the time these signs become apparent, the infestation may have advanced.
Impact on Trees
Ash trees have been particularly hard-hit by the emerald ash borer. These invaders disrupt the flow of nutrients within the tree, leading to wilting, dieback of branches, and eventually, the death of the entire tree. The economic and ecological consequences are profound, as ash trees play a vital role in many ecosystems and are commonly used in landscaping.
Spread and Geographic Impact
The spread of the emerald ash borer opens the door to human activities such as the transportation of infested firewood. Since its discovery in Michigan in 2002, the beetle has rapidly expanded its range, infesting ash trees in numerous states and provinces. The geographic impact is extensive, affecting both urban and forested areas.
Prevention and Management
Preventing the spread of the emerald ash borer is a collective effort that involves both proactive and reactive measures. Quarantine regulations on the movement of ash wood products, public awareness campaigns, and early detection programs are part of the prevention strategy. In cases of confirmed infestation, management strategies include the targeted use of insecticides, biological controls like parasitoid wasps, and, in severe cases, the removal and replacement of affected trees.
The Role of Certified Arborists
ISA-certified arborists play an essential role in the fight against the emerald ash borer. Their expertise allows for accurately identifying infestations, assessing tree health, and implementing appropriate management strategies. Timely intervention by arborists can sometimes save infested trees, but their primary role is often in guiding communities and property owners on preventative measures.
The battle against the emerald ash borer is ongoing, requiring continued vigilance and adaptation of strategies. Research into resistant ash tree varieties, improved insecticide formulations, and community engagement are essential components of a comprehensive approach. As we navigate this ecological challenge, we aim to mitigate the emerald ash borer damage and develop sustainable practices that protect our trees and their environments.
The emerald ash borers pose a significant threat to ash trees, demanding a united front in response. Through awareness, proactive measures, and the expertise of certified arborists, we can strive to preserve the beauty and ecological contributions of our ash tree populations, ensuring that the emerald ash borer's silent invasion does not become an irreversible tragedy for our landscapes.

MUZYCZNE REKOMENDACJE: EABS meets Jaubi „In Search of Better Tomorrow”
Podróże Latarnika (Marka Pędziwiatra), do…
