Source (Season 1 - April 7th 2022)
hannahgreenecostumes: Stede and his robes in Our Flag Means Death! Christine Wada designed two wonderful robes that Stede wears throughout the season, plus a fantastically ruffled nightgown all made by one of the show’s pattern makers @heathervanderstitch and her team @shizenbeauty Maria Ivakhinova and Glady Cepeda! The Yellow Dressing Gown: I believe this was the very first costume piece we made for Stede. It was made out of a crinkle textured rayon with a jacquard floral motif from @moodfabrics in LA with a silk charmeuse lining. The best part about the robe is all the incredible soutache that was all the work of the incredible Maria Ivakhinova

Such a 𝒇𝒂𝒃𝒖𝒍𝒐𝒖𝒔 judo-ballerina! I love Manon, after doing her first alt outfit, I had to do this one, as well! The blue fabric was the hardest piece for me to choose, after going through many samples I loved the Balenciaga floral jacquard from @moodfabrics, AND found they had a gorgeous Ralph Lauren stretch twill there that was perfect for the pants, as well! I used 4 different kinds of lace for the accents, & of course added MORE crystals (bc I can). The lining & center front is a deep red rose damask with metallic gold accents. I need to find a pic where you can see the details I put on the epaulettes. The wig is 3 sewn together for volume, I can’t decide if I want to leave it w a more natural curl (I usually prefer a more natural looking style on wigs), or to go full drill curl sometime. We’ll see! Huge thanks to @scoundrel.run for the photos!

Stargirl is complete!
I had waited and waited for the official pattern for my gloves and spats, but turned out there was no glove pattern at all! The spatpattern was also strange. So I used my favorite McCall's pattern for the gloves and my Link pattern I made for the spats.
The goggles are my official WWE Becky Lynch goggles I've had for years and finally get to wear them in cosplay! They hold my Nanami wig in place.
I'll be taking her to rose city next month!
Free bodysuit pattern is the Olympia tennis dress from @moodfabrics with a modified neckline and lengthened torso. Thank you for good size inclusive patterns!

I love my local quilting stores and the older ladies who work there and know my toddler by sight but boy am I bummed about the Joann’s closing. There’s no local spot for apparel fabric now, which is a bummer.
Trying some online spots but hate having to order swatches and waiting longer to start projects because I can’t touch the fabric first.
I did just order some double gauze from moodfabric, so we’ll see how that is!

Just in time for the new year, I finished my sewing practice dress. I stuck to most of the pattern, except with the sleev3 hems. I'm not a fan of elastics on my wrists, so I left the ends of the sleeve flared. But it's definitely some of my cleaner sewing work, and the insides are all finished with either facings, French seams, or serging.

I'll have to wait for the summer to wear, or at least a little bit warmer temperatures. It's quite light!

yeah! So in terms of buying patterns youre best off looking at a pattern in a store near you. If you get one in person it will be tissue paper and an instruction page or 6 depending on how complicated the pattern is. I dont know if you have spotlight over there but any fabric store should have patterns in stock too. You can go to their website and find a pattern you like instead of flicking through books in person.
once you’re confident then you can just put “free sewing pattern” into the search bar and it should come up with a load of websites. My go to is Moodfabrics since they have a lot of range though mostly woman’s (whatever that’s supposed to mean). When youre looking at patterns just pay attention to what kind of material they were designed for. Thicker materials like Denim have different types of seams or larger amount of seam allowance. Thinner materials like chiffon are evil and you will cry at least one so make sure you know what youre doing before that
there are difference sizes of needles for your machine too. The small numbers mean that the tip is bigger (dont ask me why i dont know) and bigger tips are better for thicker materials. High numbers are better for thin and flowing materials. Your machine should come with a few in the midrange. -80 i assume.
i do make my own patterns primarily because my brain just works like that but most people don’t because its easy to make something that doesnt work. I will go out on a limb and say that if you find any patterns on the internet or in person they will work if you follow the instructions. Pattern pieces are made all at the same time so all the curves and measures should fit perfectly. Unless its a sleeve. I don’t recommend doing sleeves on the first try they can be frustrating if you dont know the tricks (there are a few)
Other than that you can be sure that if the pattern is up for sale it will work because if it doesnt then thats not a product! All patterns should come with the instruction pages that tell you what to do first. Follow them if you are smart
Hey you make your own clothes a lot right? First: that's really cool. Second: I would love to do that & I don't know where I would even start. Do you have any tips?
yeah so ive got a cert 3 for clothes making/pattern making and im part way through a degree on it. Here a few things you need to know
Buy a cheap ass domestic sewing machine. One that can do a little bit of everything. If you dont know what i mean by domestic i mean the ones that arent attached to the tables and cost minimum $1000. Depending on your economy a good price will change but my current one was $150 aus dollards. Look for one specifically that comes with a few different feet and has options for buttonholes, zigzag, and straight stitches. These three are pretty much all you need to make most clothes
fabric scissors. Just get some sharp scissors from whatever store, but make sure they are actually sharp. Once you have them DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE THEM ON ANYTHING BUT FABRIC. Trust. Itll dull way to quick and youll need to get more just dont do it. If you dont already have paper scissors just get a cheap pair
go to a fabric store. Get some money saved and go to a store. You need to touch the fabric and see it in person to have any idea what you like. I recommend cotton or polyester for the first project because its friendly most of the time. Buy at least 20cm more than your pattern says you need just to be on the safe side. There might be a stain on the fabric or you might make a mistake. Better to have a little more than less. you should also buy a pattern. I recommend finding something basic but you would wear happily like a pair of pants or skirt with an elastic waistband. non elastic waistbands get complicated quickly so stick to elastic at first. You want to find something that matches the fabric you want to use. If your pattern is specifically for stretch fabrics then dont get none stretch fabric. You are less likely to succeed.
get yourself some pins. people have differing opinions on pins but if youre working with cotton or poly then it will be fine. You want long ones with a pearl end. The flat head ones hurt your fingers after a few hours trust me
Now you have basic equipment! Yay!
now most of the instructions from here will depend on what pattern youre starting with and all the instructions you need should be in the envelope. I will give you just a few tips that cover basically everything
Pick your favourite side of the fabric before cutting it. This is your right side. Pay attention to whether your instructions say to cut right side up (rsu) or pairs. If it says you need pairs of things then fold your fabric with selvages touching and right side together. That way its less likely to be visibly stained.
fabric has this thing called a grainline. Your pattern pieces will have a long line with arrows on it. Line those up parallel to the selvage of the fabric. The selvage is the ugly looking strip on the edges of rolls of fabric. Use a ruler or book or something to make sure everything is parallel
most of the seams you find are closed seams meaning you sew the straight stitch with right sides together and then overlock. Instead of overlocking the edges just sew your machine to zigzag and line it up so the edge gets caught on one side of the zigzag. This will stop it from fraying unless your fabric is evil. But how do you know if the fabric is evil you say? Trust me you will know.
but i dont want to have closed seams you say. Well theres an option called french seams where the raw edge of the fabric is held inside the seam! I wouldnt do it on your first project but you can half the seam allowance (how far from the edge your sew a straight line) and go from there pretty easily. Theres plenty of tutorials for this on youtube if youre interested
Your sewing machine should come with different bits that go on the machine where the needle is. They are called Feet and they are your friend. They let you do cool things like zippers and buttonholes. Theres plenty of youtube tutorials on how to use those too
if your fabric is stretchy then zigzag the seams where you would normally sew straight lines and then zigzag the raw edge too. This lets it stretch without popping stitches.
this should all get you started for your first garment! Its important to check that you understand what youre doing before you do it. Your patterns will say everything you need to know for each garment and the back should tell you what size you should be looking at and what you need.
if youve got more questions then let me know ill be happy to explain!
#Just be sure with patterns that you get the size that fits too#with the ladies patterns that usually just means they include a bust dart (a triangle that you sew in the middle of fabric to give it shape#and once you’ve completed your garment if you want it to fit you a bit better you can 100% just put some darts in.#i actually recommend it#make the whole thing finish it up and then pinch any excess fabric put a pin in that and sew a straight line on the wrong side so it fits

Full body photos of the Kraken Mermaid Armor, a collaborative project between myself and @faerytale-wings ! I did the corset, the cape, and the hooded bolero. She hand-tooled AND dyed all of the armor out of real leather! The white dress and the jingly navy sash are the only things that were purchased.
Corset is @silkbaron-blog Tidepool Dupioni and Midnight Velvet, trims are from Amazon. Fully lined in coordinating cotton, and three types of steel boning (spring/spiral/flat) for ultra stability! Cape is an ombre chiffon from Moodfabric, and the bolero is blizzard fleece from Joann's(to be upgraded and replaced in the future).

Ok I'm free.
Limit pre-buying and bulk buying to supplies you always reuse - For me, this is stuff like muslin fabrics and interfacing. But I'd also say buying commonly used colors is also a good idea. Like I plan to always have black fabrics around because, well, I love black clothes. I find this helps you keep a low stash but also save money long term. If muslin or a frequently used fabric is on sale, one you know you will use, go for it.
Buy swatches, if you're patient. Alternatively, don't have exact colors in mind - One of my favorite fabric stores online is currently MoodFabrics.com. I'm lazy and don't buy swatches all the time, but usually I save that moment for when I just know a general idea. Like recently I just know I wanted to make a nice blue skirt, I avoided getting any more specific than that. I think this is more of a mental tool because your expectations aren't as specific. Also it helps that moodfabrics' images are pretty spot on for color. I recommend them they explain a lot about the fabric so there's no surprises like "oh no this is way more transparent that I expected"
Make project budgets! - Projects vary a lot and I find doing a budget per garment is better. Like making a corset is much more expensive than just making an A-line skirt. I also think this keeps my stash low while saving money long term.
Ok. This is a sewing blog now.
I'm making bodice blocks for myself, followed by a pencil skirt sloper. This this, I can design whatever the fuck I want and give up on commercial prints. My eyes have been opened so fucking wide recently about pattern drafting. I was so confused about this type of stuff a year or so ago but I've really learned so much.
My general interest in fashion has skyrocketed.
#sewing#hope this helps#this is very specific to me but I hope it at least does something for someone#Also lets be real all of us will see a fabric that we would buy without a second though#So this is mostly me trying to keep a good spending habits and save myself#When I crocheted I had so much yarn and it wasn't even always good yarn either and it never got used and it turned into a tangled mess

I’m back on the sewing horse!
After quite a long hiatus (long for me anyway), I completed these trousers, I’ve downloaded this pattern months ago but I finally was inspired by the sew your view tutorial for a faux fly on Instagram!
Even though the pattern included a fully working fly, they actually didn’t need it, because of the draw string waist there is ample room to squeeze in.
I searched the #WatsoniaPants for inspiration when I decided to do this pattern, this is when I came across the faux fly tutorial. A lot of the feedback from those that made it recommended making a size smaller than recommended on the pattern chart, because they were an loose fitting garment anyway, I figured if it wasn’t right they’d still fit anyway. But it actually made them fit perfectly in my opinion.

I also done a little bit for the environment with this project, I got a draw string for another garment that wax falling apart and I upcycled it. Every little helps right?
Oh yeah, did I mention..: there’s POCKETS!!! The pocket choice on this pattern really accentuates, the “paper bag waist”. They also have the cutest faux pocket flaps too!!

Now what shall I make next 🤔
I’ll be back hopefully sooner rather than later. ✌🏽
