god i would’ve loved to see uther meet merlin’s family. he meets and knows merlin for years and knows how impertinent he is and the lack of respect he holds for royals and nobles. merlin is a thorn in his side but arthur is fond of him so he leaves him be. then he meets hunith who is so much better than merlin and doesn’t seem to be at all related to that bastard peasant until she tears him a new asshole without any regard for propriety. she is a country woman and uses language appropriate in the countryside, not the royal court. she is very clearly merlin’s mother in that moment made obvious by the set of her jaw and the steel in her eyes. then balinor gets carted in and is brought before him and he’s gleeful bc finally he can kill the last dragonlord. then hunith calls his name and he calls hers. dread simmers in his gut and then they kiss as he watches with trepidation. then hunith pulls back and tells him to meet his son and tugs merlin forward.

it all makes sense. the very blood running thru their veins is made to give uther headaches. balinor (fugitive, dragonlord), hunith (harbored a fugitive, lied to authorities, punched the king), and merlin (annoying, dragonlord) being a family unit just makes sense. when merlin’s magic gets revealed hes not even shocked. he just amends his list to read “merlin (annoying, dragonlord, sorcerer)”

Dylan has had a few issues, including getting into a fight with Moo, and gaining a notch in his ear. He has also continued to have issues with GI stasis. We manage, but he keeps us on our toes.

We also have a new creature, Ralph Montague. Dylan is scared of him.

How do you come up with names for OCs?

lots and lots of them are lifted wholesale from writers like agatha christie [the source of myrtle's frenemy, henrietta savernake, in bookbinding] or p.g. wodehouse [the source of the bank robber, catsmeat williams, in inhuman resources].

others are deliberate references to specific characters or historical figures, which make sense within the story i'm telling. romilda vane's sister in one year in every ten is named harriet, after peter wimsey's love interest in the detective novels by dorothy l. sayers, harry's colleague ngaio marsh is named for the crime writer; one of percy's colleagues in subluxation, who has also fallen under rodolphus' spell, is named clarice starling.

for the rest, i try to follow the naming principles we see in canon:

charactonyms: several people on the list of men in the pub brawl voldemort mentions in chapter six of scylla and charybdis have names meaning "thief"; several characters in dum spiro spero have names which reference "hope"; the owner of the owl emporium in one year in every ten is archimedes bubo, after merlin's owl in the sword in the stone and the latin word for owl; any healer i write has a name which references medicine and/or the body - edwin rheum, mariarita patella, david lancet; the head of the vampire liaison office in subluxation is named theophania westenra

unusual first names with common surnames: sekhmet mulholland, fungibus mcguinness, themistius selwyn

historical names: unusual anglo-norman surnames [anquetil, vavasour]; arthurian names [leodegrance tremblay]; the deities and mythological figures of various ancient societies [meretseger montague, sandraudiga rowle, autonoë dashwood-brandon]; notorious historical figures [romulus augustulus lestrange, for the last, and worst, roman emperor]

names which make clear the person in question is irish: philomena cole, aloysius milmo

and really leaning into names which just feel enjoyable to read and to say: bohemond kneebone, edith scrying-glass, reginald chive, mick quicke, seraphina holliday etc.

or, more succinctly, canon has great fun with names, and i think we should take that for ourselves.

Hold on… Is bbc merlin just Romeo & Juliet but with adults and two dudes?

It’s been a while since I watched either, and obviously there are differences, but… both have doomed narratives, are about two enemy “families” (magic people vs non. Montegues vs Capulets), that animosity eventually leading to the death of the main couple (Merlin doesn’t die, but he certainly lost his other half and probably felt dead. plus he’s immortal so we can’t hold him to mortal standards of life and death). Arthur killed kara which led to Mordred killing him, and in r&j there was some back and forth killing to that set it all off, right? And then after the deaths (r&j, Arthur) things seemed to be resolved and people make peace (the Montagues and capulets stopping their feud, Whatever Gwen did on the throne. Seemed hopeful and she knew it was Merlin, right? So she prbly did smth about the ban).

My brain’s not braining very well right now so maybe I’m reading too much into this?? But??? They do have some similarities, right?

Merlin admits the ways of the court are a mystery to him. Merlin, baby. You need étiquette training. Have someone teach you. Please.

Arthur, that outfit you put Merlin in is ridiculous, but also... a bit too put together for a servant ? It's not just the hat... Merlin is wearing a cape !

Uther is ruthless and unfair here. Bayard was willing to prove his goodwill by drinking out of the goblet but looks like Uther decided that poisoned cup or not, Merlin would suffer from the outcome, either by being poisoned or being punished for lying.

Arthur protests, because he may be a royal prat but he's not like his father.

The Mortaeus flower is guarded by an awful magical beast and Arthur goes "Sounds like fun" and immediately decides to go save his servant's life

The next scene between Uther and Arthur is really good at showing the difference between them. Arthur starts questioning his father and they both reveal their values. Uther doesn’t care who dies because to him the life of the future King of Camelot is worth more than a servant's. Arthur refuses to stand by and watch, especially since to his knowledge, Merlin has saved his life twice already. "Then don't watch", Uther says.

Morgana is GREAT here. She wanted to fight Bayard's men with a LADLE ?

"Spare me the lecture, I've already had it from Uther". Uther's kids are just really good at opposing him 😆

"Sometimes you've got to do what you think is right, and damn the consequences". "What kind of King would Camelot want ? One that would risk his life to save that of a lowly servant or one who does what his father tells him to ?" I love seeing Arthur being challenged and growing into the King he will be.

"He's getting hotter" The innuendos in that episode are comiiiiing.

Merlin speaking 💫 magic language 💫 in front of Gwen. I wish she had put two and two together before the finale...

Morgana makes me laugh ! She defies Uther and defends Arthur.

Funny how Uther sees his son as "just a boy" and Morgana goes "Have you seen your son recently ?" And tells him he's old enough to make up his own mind and have his own experience of the world. Is Morgana still Arthur's older sister in this story ? She would be older than him then.

Merlin moaning Arthur's name as he lays dying and feverish is gay. Sorry, I don't make the rules.

The idea of Nimueh as a pretty wounded woman in the forest is a great throwback to the original Arthurian texts, where young maidens were often on the way of knights as temptations or traps, steps in their quests.

Uther truly doesn’t give a fuck about Merlin's life... He saved his son twice, he is Gaius' apprentice, and he crushed that flower, in an attempt to teach his son that "there is a right and a wrong way of doing things" and he shouldn't be disobeyed. Asshole. "I'll see that you're let out in a week and then you can find yourself another servant". Servants are all replaceable to him.

Gwen shows then that even though she seems shy, she is also brave.

Arthur using the pretense of his own well-known arrogance to get the flower to Merlin by refusing the food Gwen brings him... yes King ❤️

"We're not all as precious as Her Royal Highness" that guard walked so Gwaine could run with his "princess".

"The poison was created using magic, we might need to use magic to create the antidote" dude that's just exposition at this point, you could have tricked Gwen into leaving without saying anything

You can tell Gaius hasn’t used magic in two decades... he may care about Merlin but he's a two faced bitch.

Draco heard the door open and close, then Potter stood beside him at the desk. The floor was littered with the notes that Draco had dropped to reveal all of this.

Potter rubbed his hand over his face, a furious blush creeping up his cheeks. He'd taken a quick shower and changed his clothes. He looked good in a green Muggle shirt and black trousers. Tired still, and he hadn't shaved, but Draco didn't mind. He stared at Potter. Potter, who had followed him around and taken pictures of him, secretly, hiding them underneath his notes on the wall. Had Potter been stalking him? Did he still suspect him of some dark evil, like he'd done all through Hogwarts?

Draco opened his mouth to defend himself against – Merlin, he didn't even know against what. But then he noticed Potter's erection – big and hard, clearly visible underneath those Muggle trousers. The smell of lemon soap was around him, with a whiff of turpentine. And the pieces fell into place, one after the other: Potter waiting for him in that Ministry corridor, Potter's disastrous coming out, Potter's shy smile whenever they met. Harry sodding Potter wanted him, wanted Draco Malfoy. It was a cosmic joke but Draco couldn't laugh. His mouth had gone dry as his blood rushed south with a need so strong it hurt. "This," Potter started, "I can explain it, I can. If you..."

"Come here." The Allure was strong in Draco's voice, and he saw immediately what it did to Potter. His breath stuttered, a swift flick of the tip of his tongue. He moved one hand towards his neck as if to get a hold on himself. The other went instinctively towards his groin.

Potter obeyed at once, like he was under Imperius. He didn't take his eyes from Draco when he put the glasses on the desk. And perhaps that order had been a mistake, for Draco found himself gasping at the green intensity of Potter's eyes, sparkling and dark with desire. A strange urge came over him, to smooth out the creases around Potter's eyes, to caress those lips until they opened into a small smile. Potter's eyes fluttered shut, but he held still, leaning ever so slightly into Draco's touch.

"Put your arms around my neck," Draco said.

Something flashed across Potter's face, something like pain. "No, Malfoy, that's not a good... I don't think..." He didn't finish but didn't move, either. What was it with that man? And this was like it had been without the potion, there was no denying the heat flooding his entire body, the crazy need to be with Potter, right now, here on this desk.

Potter's hands were sweaty and trembling, yet their hesitant embrace sent sparks through Draco's body. The tingling in his shoulder blades turned into something else, something that pushed painfully against his skin and made him move forward and pull Potter close, to have their bodies touch. Oh, and he should stop this now, he should. But then Potter moaned softly, his breath warm, his lips so close to Draco's cheek, his chest hard against him. Draco couldn't stop, not when it felt so good, brilliant like nothing had felt in years. He moved his hands over Potter's back, his arse, his thighs. The Secret of Moonacre (2008)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

No one has ever read a truly terrible book and thought “I could fix this by making it a movie!” This means The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge - the inspiration for the 2008 film The Secret Moonacre - must be great. You couldn't tell from this snooze-fest but I have to believe it.

After her father's death, Maria Merryweather (Dakota Blue Richards) inherits a book titled The Ancient Chronicles of Moonacre Valley. It tells of a curse cast upon two feuding families by the Moon Princess (Natascha McElhone). Sent to live with her estranged uncle Benjamin (Ioan Gruffudd) along with her governess, Miss Heliotrope (Juliet Stevenson), Maria begins exploring the grounds of the castle she now calls home. There, she begins wondering if the story she's read is based on some truths.

Seemingly pieced together from bits of other fantasy films and obviously released to capitalize on the Harry Potter craze, Moonacre is profoundly dull. The only "original" elements of this story are scraps the bigger franchises rejected, such as the Capulet and Montague-like feud between the two families - a quarrel that makes little sense. On one side is uncle Benjamin and the handful of servants he employs. On the other is the de Noir family and their soldiers - all of which looks like they come from the Middle Ages, despite the film being set sometime in the 18th century. At least I think that’s when it’s set. There are a number of historical anachronisms which clearly indicate the story is set at some point in the past but when? Who knows? Anyway, the villains have this huge army and aren’t above murder as their skull-filled dungeons clearly prove, so why haven’t they just taken Moonacre Valley by force? We’re probably not meant to wonder such things, as this film is meant for children and children alone, but you can’t help it. None of the characters are interesting and the magic is as captivating as the protagonist. You just kind of sit there, waiting for it to end so you can walk away while averting the eyes of anyone else who had the misfortune of seeing the film too.

This is a terrible-looking picture. The special effects are so lousy I assumed the engorged moon in the sky was unintentional until it’s revealed the celestial body is on a collision course for Earth - part of the curse set by The Moon Princess. It’s obviously a low-budget production so more forgiving reviewers might be kinder to it but not this one. There is too much time wasted on useless characters such as the possibly magical cook (who I was thought was some kind of elf creature based on the DVD cover) to think even a big budget would've saved this project. While we’re on that subject, take a look at the quote on the back! “The Little White Horse was my favourite childhood book” says J.K. Rowling. That’s the best they could scrounge together for the home release? Merlin’s beard. Did I really pay $5 to see this?

The best thing about The Secret of Moonacre is that its instantly forgettable. If someone ever decided to properly adapt it, no one would ever say "oh, they're remaking that movie again? no thanks!" No one - not even those who acted in the film - will remember this adaptation exists. I can’t picture anyone saying they enjoyed the film - even ironically. (On DVD, January 25, 2019)
