An Afterthought

Reverto shares a moment with you, the young rider protagonist, after the fight with the Cephadrome in the caves.

#10 "You know I'll always be here, right?"

The Barrens, much like the Lamure Desert, were hot and dry during the day but tended to get cold at night. The presence of the ocean gave way to a slight breeze here and there, making things even cooler in the evening. Most of the monsters in this region began to settle down for the evening except for a few predators.

You and Reverto have just defeated a Cephadrome for Scrivener Commander Lilia as the monster had caused a Plesioth to disturb life in the Barrens. The hunter feels as though he has taught you a few things when it comes to understanding everyone's perspectives, but he could also tell you were a little distracted.

Of course, he understood you were worried about Ratha. Reverto knows riders well enough to see that there is kinship between you guys. You can probably feel the wyvern's fear and stress.

This whole experience has been an eye-opener to him when it came to riders and their bond with monsters. Perhaps you taught him a little something too.

But right now, he had to deal with a never-ending human need. Nature was calling.

"I'll just wait here, I guess." You told him with a shrug, not really understanding why he couldn't wait. Lulucion was literally right over there.

"Be back in a jiffy." Reverto said with a quick wave while wandering off to find some privacy.

As he left, you meandered over to Navirou, who was perched on top of a rock near a palm tree along the shoreline. A few Ludroth were dipping into the water to begin their nightly hunt, but other than that, all was peaceful. You said a few words to your loud-mouthed Felyne companion as you sat down and leaned against said boulder he was on.

"Really? He needs to pee! Gimme a break..." Was all Reverto heard before he finally tuned the annoying guy out...

Not too long later

Reverto pushed back some brittle and dry shrubbery as he made his way back to the shoreline where you were. After breaking through the brush, he dusted his hands off before noticing a familiar striped patterning off in the distance.

A Tigrex had left its den to begin hunting. Best get back to you and back to Lulucion as soon as possible.

Although, if push came to shove, Navirou would be a good snack for it. The thought made Reverto laugh as you came within his sights.

However, he noticed the moonlight reflecting off your face and the slight puffiness of your eyes. Have you been crying? Also, Navirou was missing, and you were all on your own. Did you guys get in some sort of fight? The idea that you were left here alone made him paranoid for some reason.

"Hey Y/N, where's Navirou?" Reverto asked. To be honest, he wasn't too worried about the Felyne as that cat still had plenty of lives to waste. But it felt rude not to ask.

"He was tired of waiting for you, so he went back to Lulucion on his own." You said while wiping at your face nonchalantly. The hunter raised a brow with a "seriously" look on his face.

"Bro couldn't wait five minutes?"

"He's Navirou. I don't ask questions, and I don't expect normalcy."

"Fair enough."

The hunter studied your expression during this short conversation. You seemed distant and didn't have an ounce of humor in you. Now, you guys weren't the best of friends having just met, but his interactions with you while hunting the Cephadrome and being in the Barrens has shown Reverto that you normally have a much more upbeat personality. Not to mention the tear stains he saw when returning to you a few minutes ago.

Something was wrong and there was a little voice inside him saying to figure out what that is. So, instead of telling you to get up and get back to Lulucion, he plopped down beside you with his legs stretched out and arms leaning back. You turned to look at him, confused.

"You must miss Ratha." He stated plainly. It took you a moment to reply, not expecting Reverto to say that.

You nodded numbly.

"I've been with him since he was born. I mean, it's like that with all my monsties, but Ratha needs me more. I feel like a parent and the whole world is against him...it kills me inside to know that only I can see the gentle soul inside." You said while shaking a bit, moving to hug your legs as you stared out at the shoreline where the waves were gently lapping at the sand. Reverto eyed you with sympathy.

"Also..." You hesitated a little, turning your head away.

"Yeah?" The hunter pushed you.

"Truth is, I don't know if I am strong enough." You whispered, tears threatening to spill out as you voiced the bitter thought you've been keeping caged for a while.

For Reverto, your words just brought him back to the image of a young hunter, fresh from training. Armed with nothing but a longsword as he went to fight a Tigrex, wondering if he was strong enough. He shook his head at the memory from his youth.

"Hey, you are strong enough." Reverto encouraged you while sitting up in a cross-legged position. You just shook your head with a sad smile.

"I don't know if I believe that Reverto...and neither do you."

The hunter felt his face flush hot with guilt at your words. He didn't mean to make you feel so down on yourself. For some reason, he just wanted to see your strength. If Ratha proved to be a danger to others, he wanted to know you could keep everyone safe.

"I made a mistake. You more than proved yourself today. I bet Lilia already has Ratha waiting for you in town." He praised you while moving to pat your shoulder. While you still weren't back to your normal self, you did give him smile.

"How come you seem to always know what to say?" You asked while raising your head a bit to meet his eyes. Reverto flashed you a smile and simply shrugged.

"You aren't the first young rider that I've helped. And just like that other rider, you managed to teach me something new."

While you knew, from Navirou anyway, that Reverto wasn't a novice when it came to riders, it still surprised you how he can take on such a paternal role. You've known him for only a day but felt like you have known him your whole life. He definitely had mentor vibes to him.

"It's nice to know that you understand how I feel, especially as a hunter. Shows me that maybe we can all get along after all. You've got my back, right?" You said in a shy manner as you didn't want to overstep any boundaries with Reverto. His answer brought a smile to your face.

"You know I'll always be here, right?" The hunter said gently while moving to give you a friendly side hug. The entire interaction made you feel safe, and you melted into his side.

"Thank you."

He moved to release you and you both took to staring out at the sea where a Purple Ludroth had breached to take in some air. A few Ludroth followed suit, and they all swam together under the moonlight.

"By the way, what did I happen to teach you?" You asked while turning to look at him. Reverto continued to stare at the leviathans as he answered you.

"That it's okay to be afraid."

You smiled to yourself and once again joined in observing the beauty of nature as the monsters peacefully splashed about before diving under the azure waves. Sighing to yourself, you wished the peace could last a little longer.

But just then, the loud stomping of a large monster brought you and Reverto to your feet.

A Tigrex, much like the one the hunter saw earlier, has emerged from the shrubbery away from the shoreline, cornering you and Reverto against the sea. I guess you guys were its chosen targets for the night.

"I'm sure glad it's okay to be afraid." You stated meekly.

"You and me both." Reverto said while reaching for his weapon.

The choice was fighting or braving it with the leviathans in the sea. Placing its forelimbs against the ground, the Tigrex raised its head and roared in a furious manner. Its wings flared out in a sign of dominance.

While you were practically shaking from the sudden encounter with the monster, you felt an odd sense of peace when you looked at Reverto. He would protect you and you would protect him.

And when the fight was over, he handed you a mega potion with his signature toothy grin. After all, he'll always be there for you.

Monster Hunter Stories 2 Third Anniversary ! (OMG Time flies !)

3 years ? Are you serious ? 3 YEARS ?!

Time flies way too fast in my opinion ...

3 years later and this is still one of my favourite games of all time, if not my favorite !

Also they just made a compilation of both games released ?! I hope this will mean a future third game because I don't want this series to end.

Anyways, for the First Anniversary, I did a fanart of the final battle, now have the people that were with us at some points of the story ; our beloved Battle Buddies ♥
