2024 BL - Top 10 Trend Report

In last year's trend report I said:

"I think Taiwan has the chops to give us something as good as The 8th Sense or Old Fashion Cupcake but in their style, and I would like to see them exercise their talent for good rather than just profit."

And Unknown happened.

I asked for it, they gave it to me. I could not be more happy. So anyway, I just wanted to crow a bit.

And now...

2024's TRENDS!

1 Trope Subversion Levels Up

My Stand In went so far as to subvert the whole damn romance genre. But in general we saw a lot of BL recognizing, highlighting and calling out it's own absurdities and tropes. From Korea commenting on the Dead Fish Kiss to Wandee Gooodday actually promoting green flag behavior (the real deal).

It was an interesting year for meta commentary, it kind of whole scale left parody behind (say goodbye, Japan) and entered almost every BL from Thailand, even the ones who should have left it alone. (Side eyes Mame.)

2 Old Tropes Revisited

Unknown revisited the step-brother trope (as did Addicted Heroin of course). But there were other old ones we haven't seen in ages, like kidnapping for love, kissing on rooftops, and all the dub con (Blossom). Love Sick rebooted with very little modernization (except where it counted) right up to and including no kisses. Mix Up even did "trapped on the rooftop" which I haven't seen in over a decade.

And then Wimpy dropped. And it felt like I was reading yaoi in my tiny attic bedroom in the 90s.

3 BL Enters All the Workplaces

I love how many adult leads and sides we are getting, even from Thailand. By which I mean, BL outside of a school setting. We still have high school and university set stuff, but that used to be ALL we got. I don't mind school settings, but I like that we have some kind of balance going on these days.

We are starting to get not just cubicles and offices (as Japan foretold) but all kinds of workplaces from retail to authors to the film industry.

4 BL Passes the Sniff Test

He smells good has always been a trope that I love. It was one of my favorite things about Bad Buddy. But this year it felt like every third BL trotted this one out. I was delighted by it. Of course I was. But it happened A LOT.

Century of Love was a key use of it since smell is so coupled to memory, I thought they dealt with it particularly well. But even Japan and Korea deployed the sniff test.

5 Fewer Shipper Characters within BL

Negative trends are always harder to call (it's easier to track the presence of something over the absence) but I'm still calling this one.

In a discussion of The Shipper @heretherebedork and I got into a discussion about this. It really seems like both we are getting less "female shipper" characters and/or they are evolving into overly interested but very supportive female friends instead. Softening, if you will.

I think partly this is because there has been a general decline in this archetype in yaoi over the past 5-10 years, but also they tend to incur pretty bad reactions in fans, and Thailand (especially) tends to pay attention to that kind of thing.

Unfortunately this also means we are seeing a worsening of the "no female representation at all" backbone of BL. We Are, which I loved, didn't have a single female character. Not even a throw away.

6 The rise of the green flag seme!

The seme (active attacker in the relationship) got a lot of green flag action this year. We saw lots of Dommy boys, Daddy types, and players asking for permission, trying to communicate, talking about safe sex. Particularly out of Thailand.

To make sure this is clear, green flag means he communicates about the relationship and sex, takes no for an answer, asks for permission for (almost) everything, and doesn't do things like (just spitballing here) take a hotel room key and go into the other mans private room when he's not around (or asleep). Okay? Christ on a cracker. (When it comes to flags Mame has red/green colorblindness.)

7 Japan Came to PLAY

Japan came to play and will not leave the field that they built. I may not always like JBL, but when I love it, I REALLY LOVE IT, and when it hits it hit hard (pain or joy). And even when I don't like it, it always gives me a lot to think about.

Japan had 18 total BLs in 2023.

17-15 in 2022 (a couple I couldn't get hold of and a couple I just don't think are BL, so 2022 is vague).

7 in 2021. <- THAT was when the big jump occurred, 3 years ago. Which might have more to do with the pandemic than anything else.

But back to now: 19 in 2024 means they are actually just increasing their production gradually and in a steady way, as might be expected. In round numbers we didn't see anything unusual.

BUT

The series they've been airing in 2024 are running longer (for them) and being aired over longer periods of time. Not to mention getting better and quicker distribution.

By which I mean, Japan used to have more shorts and movies, less actual series with full run times (by their & Korea's BL industry length standard) on streaming platforms. So I think it's JBL runtime and distribution that is experiencing real growth. And the consistency of that runtime.

In other words, it feels like there are more JBL airing because we have access to most of them (for a change) and they're running long enough to cross into each other (which has been rare in the past).

What's almost more interesting to me is...

8 What the hell happened, Korea?

Korea cut back on their BLs in 2024. I am not sure if that's money drying up, a crack down within the industry over there, the political situation, or something else.

Still, it was wild to see such a stark fall off in production. They had 18 BLs in 2024 but fully half of them were shorts, and more than half were poor production quality than is prior standard. By contrast they had 21 in 2023, but only 1 was a short, and most were very high production (getting 8/10 or higher from me).

Since Korea tends to produce some of my favorite shows, it's no surprise I had no 10/10 BLs at all in 2024 with so little KBL's stepping up to the plate.

I sure hope this isn't a trend but it feels like it might be.

9 Why the hell is the not-kiss back?

Korea doubled down on being a pain in 2024 by bringing back the "they don't actually touch lips and we pretend they did by panning around the back of the head" with the camera. (Jazz for 2 sides, example. Yes, I'm still mad.)

Then Thailand did the with Addicted Heroin. AND with Love Sick.

What is this, 2016?

Color me annoyed. I thought we saw the last of that nonsense with Make It Right.

I remind you all, if they would kiss if they het but they don't kiss when they gay, it smacks of a phobia and I'm salty about it.

Yes yes, there are actor (idol, age) excuses in play. But they should cast differently if this is going to be a problem.

10 The rise of Great Grandmas

We have had cool grandmas before in BL but in 2024 we had so many of them. The Sign, Love for Love’s Sake, Monster Next Door, Jack & Joker, Every You Every Me, The Rebound, Wandee Goodday.

The JJK Characters as cryptids

(Drabbles)

Ft ~ Satoru Gojo, Suguru Geto, Kento Nanami, Toji Fushiguro, Ryoumen Sukuna, Choso, Takuma Ino, Shiu Kong, Uraume, Yuki Tsukumo, Shoko Ieiri, Mahito

Synopsis ~ The JJK Characters if they were cryptids. Could be Kinktober because if you squint hard enough it looks a little like monster fucking

Content Warning ~ 18+, spooky cryptid folklore things, Idk adult stuff

Gojo ~

Á Bao A Qu

the A Bao A Qu lives on the steps of the Tower of Victory in Chitor, from the top of which one can see "the loveliest landscape in the world". The A Bao A Qu waits on the first step for a man brave enough to try to climb up. Until that point, it lies sleeping, shapeless and translucent, until someone passes. Then, when a man starts climbing, the creature wakes, and follows close behind. As it progresses further and further up, it begins to become clearer and more colorful. It gives off a blue light which increases as it ascends. But it only reaches perfection when the climber reaches the top, and achieves Nirvana, so his acts don't cast any shadows. But almost all the time, the climber cannot reach the top, for they are not perfect. When the A Bao A Qu realizes this, it hangs back, losing color and visibility, and tumbles back down the staircase until it reaches the bottom, once more dormant and shapeless. In doing so, it gives a small cry, so soft that it sounds similar to the rustling of silk. When touched, it feels like the fuzz on the skin of a peach. Only once in its everlasting life has the A Bao A Qu reached its destination at the top of the tower.

This reminds me of Gojo because he was always living up to other people's expectations while never picking his own path. He wanted his students to surpass him so he would follow and watch to see if they could do it. Following his students lead him to fight Sukuna, freeing him and allowing him to achieve his true nirvana

Geto ~

Atmospheric Beasts

Atmospheric Beasts are the strangest of the flying monsters from ufology, cryptozoology and astrobiology. According to eyewitness reports, these beings are, apparently, living creatures, but they break all the usual rules that the biologists apply to living organisms. They appear to be able to levitate without any need for wings; as well as their bodies are even depicted in a semi-solid, often partially invisible, state.

I like the idea that these Atmospheric Beasts were actually just Geto flying around with his curses. He too was floating and flying above everyone. Breaking the laws of physics by simply existing

Nanami ~

Domovoy

The Domovoy a Slavic household Guardian shape-shifter spirit of a given ancestry a spirit who lives in the fireplace or behind stoves. Root word Dom meaning house is from Slavic folklore that lives in the home and protects the family from harm in all ways especially the children and animals. They have a troll-like appearance they have the power to shape-shift into anything but most likely cats, dogs, bears and horses. The Domovoy is said to be able to predict the future, however if enraged the Domovoy will lash out or in sometimes even leave the kin. The Domovoy even has a female counterpart called the Domania. The domovoy is believed to be coexisting with the house. The kin of the domovoy can give gifts and offerings to him.

Nanami would absolutely protect his house and everyone in it with all his power. He is very protective of those younger than him already. I dunno, he just gave me the vibes

Toji ~

Fear Liath Moor

Am Fear Liath Mór, or Big Grey Man or The Grey Man of Ben MacDhui is known to stalk the people who climb the mountain Ben Macdhui, the second highest peak in Scotland. Because of the high levels of fog there, not many people have seen it. Some believe the Grey Man to be a guardian of the mountain, but others believe him to be the guardian of a gate to other dimensions. The grey man is reported to be very tall humanoid, at least 8 feet high (Although sometimes as high as 30 feet). It is covered in short, gray hair, hence the name. Many times the witnesses didn't even see it, but still could hear it due to the loud footsteps. Many believe the Gray Man is a relative to sasquatch/bigfoot. It normally stalks its victims until they realize that it is following them, and then it chases them. This is a common pattern. It walks on two legs, and walks (and runs) like a normal person.

Toji feels like the gateway between the normal and curse knowing world so it seems fitting he would guard it. It is also an interesting parallel because it was of great note when Gojo perceived Toji. It was the first time he said someone actually saw him and he didn't like it

Sukuna ~

Achiyalabopa

Achiyalabopa was a huge bird god of the Pueblo people. He is described as being of extraordinary size and having rainbow-colored feathers as sharp as knives. It was considered a celestial creature and may have once been attributed to the whole of creation.

Sukuna is almost a pseudo god with his reputation and skill. Wings as sharp as knives paralleling his technique. Obviously not attributed for creation but could be argued he was the best showing of what sorcery could truly be and therefor the creator of true curse prowess

Choso ~

Horned Cat

Horned demon cats or Horned cats are the phenomenon of felines with various kinds of "horns" on their head or on their body. These cats or mostly of an occult origin however there are accounts of biological animals and mutations.

The idea the Horned Cat is from occult origins and Choso was born from curse, human experimentation. A creation that was never meant to be of this world but was still created. He also gives cat vibes

Ino ~

Manitou

Manitou is a term used to designate spirit beings among many Algonquian groups of Native Americans. It refers to the concept of one aspect of the interconnection and balance of nature/life, similar to the East Asian concept of qi or the Hindu concept of Brahman; in simpler terms it can refer to a spirit (compare to the Japanese concept of kami). This spirit is seen as a (contactable) person as well as a concept. Everything has its own manitou - every plant, every stone, even every machine.

Ino's technique being Auspicious Beasts Summon allowing him to be a spititual medium it feels fitting. He connects to beast souls and embodies them for his technique, living as a balance between human and spirit beast

Shiu ~

Pale Crawlers

Pale Crawlers are a phenomenon, usually enigmatic entities that appear at night. They are humanoid creatures described as thin and pale, with long limbs with claws and large black eyes. They are known to be incredibly fast, stealthy, and smart. While unconfirmed it is likely that pale crawlers are hyper aggressive.

Shiu is someone that works from the shadows, smart, stealthy and doesn't do his own dirty work. Though unconfirmed it's most likely when backed into a corner Shiu would have no problem being aggressive and even kill

Uraume ~

Abatwa

The Abatwa of Africa are a legendary race of minuscule hunters originally told of by the Zulus as being a menace in their territories; but in the past few decades the tales told of these beings in English language media has greatly changed.

Uraume is the definition of small but deadly. Tiny and likely to go unnoticed but an absolute menace. Uraume could take out people ten times their size and decimate populations

Yuki ~

Siren

In Greek mythology, sirens are female humanlike beings with alluring voices. They are always around locations surrounded by cliffs and rocks. Sirens continued to be used as a symbol for the dangerous temptation embodied by women. "Siren" can also be used as a slang term for a woman considered both very attractive and dangerous.

Yuki will always ask "What's your type?" hoping the answer is her. She has been shown to get agitated when not answered. Her words have often left people in danger or injured. (Leading Geto to become a curse user, leading Todo in training that left him scarred)

Shoko ~

Akkorokamui

According to Shinto mythology, the creature is human-like and contains a bright red color. The Akkorokamui is also characteristically described with the ability to self-amputate, like several octopus species, and regenerate limbs. This characteristic manifests in the belief in Shinto that Akkorokamui has healing powers. Consequently, it is believed among followers that giving offerings to Akkorokamui will heal ailments of the body, in particular, disfigurements and broken limbs.

Shoko's reverse curse technique parallels the healing ability of the Akkorokamui. Though she isn't as destructive she is willing to help those close to her

Mahito ~

Nixie

The Nixie, are humanoid, and often shapeshifting water-spirits in Germanic mythology and folklore. The enthralling music of the Nøkk was most dangerous to women and children, especially pregnant women and unbaptised children. He was thought to be most active during Midsummer's Night, on Christmas Eve, and on Thursdays. However, these superstitions do not necessarily relate to all the versions listed here. Many, if not all of them, developed after the Christianizing of the northern countries, as was the case with similar stories of faeries and other entities in other areas. When malicious Nøkker attempted to carry people off, they could be defeated by calling their name; this was believed to cause their death.

Mahito is known to be a shapeshifter of sorts. Very whimsical and joyful, almost childlike. Dancing, playing, general glee but very dangerous. He lured Junpei to the sewers and is still a curse after all. Though whimsical he would take, torture, experiment and kill people

Revive this idea, Disney! This could be the next Monster High/Ever After High!

Obviously they have the Disney princess line, but expanding it to more female characters makes it even MORE profitable. Imagine a lot of the original voice actors returning for this! I can't recall if it was just a short or an actual series, but I'd be happy for a high-budget miniseries! NGL, it kinda exists in my Kingdom Hearts headcanon. (BTW the top right pic is from a jigsaw puzzle; it's not actually concept art, but it's titled Disney princess Academy, so I count it!)

Top five Feyre moments from acotar?

Oh wow tough for me to narrow down but probably (not in order of preference):

Defeating the Middengard Wyrm, loved how the scene was written and how the jeering crowd who had bet she'd die within minutes slowly started cheering her on; whole plan was so brilliant and I loved how it used her existing skillset and knowledge in some ways the most badass thing anyone has done in the series and I stand by that

Breaking the curse with her last breath and all the lead up with how she'd damn herself to save them all "for Prythian, for Tamlin, for their world and my own …These deaths would not be wasted—even if it would damn me forever", I was so shocked when she actually did it the first time I read because I could feel the weight of it and how contrary it was for Feyre's character who had struggled with hunting so much partially because it "stained her soul" to kill

Everything about the battle for Adriata, from why she insists they go help despite the blood rubies to saving the lesser fae and showing how powerful she is to recognizing how hard it was to fight, how "war would linger" within her but she would stand up and fight "again and again and again" for "my home, Prythian and the human territory and so many others" (that whole passage provides such a great overview of who Feyre is and why she's High Lady to me)

Everything about recruiting the Bone Carver (the monsters), the mirror felt like a great way to show who Feyre is at her core, the growth she had and how her true strength has always been she's someone who would do anything to protect her loved ones and her inner strength to do what needs to be done; the fact that she thought she may go mad but that it was okay as long as they had her body Amren and her sisters could still dismantle the Cauldron using her and she did it anyway. Made more meaningful because the fact that she conquered herself in this way is why she could wield the Cauldron alone

Using and reforging the Cauldron to save everyone- especially love the full circle of her becoming like the Mother as depicted in the mural she saw in acotar: "From a distant corner of my memory, my human mind … I remembered a mural I had seen at the Spring Court. Tucked away in a dusty, unused library. It told the story of Prythian. It told the story of a Cauldron. This Cauldron. And when it was held by female hands … All life flowed from it. I reached mine out... The entire universe into the palm of my hand."

The Monster Hunter Wilds Beta was a nice distraction from the shit going on in my life. It was a REALLY fun 3 days, minimal performance issues so I’m happy I don’t need to update my PC. So, here are my thoughts as a decade long fan of the series on what I experienced in Wilds.

The Good-

No clutch claw. Ten out of ten change Capcom, thank you.

Removal of gender restrictions on armor WITHOUT homogenizing the armor designs. Just a win all around here, offers such a greater range of self-expression through what your hunter wears. This will be the second time I’m playing a female hunter just because I won’t have to deal with the armor designs I don’t particularly enjoy. (Only other time was because "why not?" during my revisit to Rise a few months ago)

All the monster designs have knocked it out of the park. Chatacabra is a lovable punching bag, Doshaguma’s a nice step up to have a middle tier Fanged Beast, Balahara is a great challenge with easy to read attacks but tricky timing. And then Rey Dau just taking the cake and instantly in my top 20 favorite monsters.

Weapons all feel relatively balanced, so far? At least of the handful I tried out. I’m a pretty casual MH player, never cared for optimal builds or speedruns so as long as the weapons feel fun to play then I’m all good. Still personally feel LS might be a bit overtuned with all the options and non-committal choices it has but I digress. Switch Axe is making a comeback as my preemptive Wilds main weapon with Bow being my backup.

The map is enormous but doesn’t feel lifeless. There’s always something happening just enough to make it feel like an actual environment and not just a video game level. A massive step up from the areas in Rise that all felt kind of boring with how it was just big, flat areas with connecting alleys that you could run on top of. This feels like actual topography that all flows seamlessly into one another.

Did I mention no clutch claw?

The Bad-

Even though I didn’t have any, the performance issues others are reporting are inexcusable. Other people that I know for a FACT own a high end computer can’t get more than 20FPS on medium settings, it’s ridiculous. This game is not optimized in the slightest for PC right now and for a simultaneous release that’s unacceptable. And while I have joked about wanting to see the low-poly models for myself the fact that people are seeing those for their entire time in the Beta is, again, inexcusable.

Monsters run way too often but this might just be a Beta issue with lower health values so I’ll let it off a bit easy.

I agree with the lack of impact on the really big hits but I am also letting this one off easy because it could have to do with the lack of attack power we have in the Beta. We’re literally in the basic starting gear with the basic beginner’s weapon, there’s room for the hit stop and impact to ramp up dynamically the higher our damage numbers go.

I know this isn’t something they can fix by launch (or if they’d even consider fixing at all) but having only six voices in character creation feels extremely limiting. I understand your hunter is fully voiced throughout the entire game now so getting the usual twenty-ish voices would’ve bloated the budget significantly, but the poorly implemented pitch shifter does nothing to make up for their absence. Even just going one or two notches up or down and you can start to hear the artificial “static” of the pitch filter and it’s distracting.

So many control scheme options and you CAN’T turn off the Radial Menu? Fucking why??? I’ve never enjoyed having control of the camera taken away from me while scrolling through my item bar in previous games and now I can’t even fix that. I’ve begrudgingly been forcing myself to learn how to use it, but removing an option that was in the previous two games for no reason is a baffling decision.

Still looking forward to the game’s launch in a few months and hoping that maybe a few of these issues will be resolved by then.

It turns out that Mutsumi is the daughter of the ultimate spy family. Even worse, Mutsumi is being harassed by her overprotective, nightmare of a brother, Kyoichiro. Taiyo will have to take drastic steps to save Mutsumi.

A Crow Doesn't Choose Its Master (Karasu wa Aruji o Erabanai)

Summary: Yukiya is the lackluster second son of a regional boss in the North House territory. His younger brother has overtaken him in academics. He is no good at sword battle, either. I've written this review on letterboxd for the John Dies At The End movie (didn't really like it). I thought I would post it here as well in case people wanna add or disagree with something :)

It's not the worst movie-adaption, yet it's far from good. It's not really a John Dies At The End and more of a Jeff Passes Away After The Third Act.

The acting is fine. The two mains that play John and Dave have good chemistry and play their dynamic well.

The cinematography is decent on the surface-level but for a book as crazy and trippy as this one, it’s too simple. Even the scenes where Dave is high on the soy sauce it just looks a bit too regular and average. When the sauce material has monsters, alternate universes and sentient drugs that bend time and space you have the opportunities to be creative with the camera work. Sadly that opportunity wasn’t used.

The writing: I can’t give the movie much credit because pretty much all of the scenes are word-for-word copies of scenes in the book.

Practical and visual effects: While the third act looks truly cheap and cheesy, everything that comes before that is quite good for a low budget film. While not all the creatures look like the way they were described in the book, they seemingly use practical effects for the monsters for the most part, which I adore.

Comparing it to the book, however, truly highlights all its flaws. I was expecting some of the book stuff to be cut because a 500 pages long book doesn’t fit into 90 minutes. But I was negatively surprised to find out that two thirds of the book has been cut. Two of the best thirds, to be exact. And the things we did get were focused on the wrong things. While the book is hilarious, what makes it stand out so much was the perfect balance of horror and comedy. At times you feel like crying from laughter, and then you need to take a moment to breathe after the tension. Sometimes even at the same time. The movie was pure comedy and didn’t once try to be a genuine horror story, unlike its bookish counterpart. They have cut every scene that caused genuine tension and terror.

On top of that it feels like the movie didn’t understand that the story also explores deeper themes and can get dark and serious at times. The prologue scene is the perfect example of that missing understanding. The prologue, the funny take on the ship of Theseus philosophy, is a funny way to start the book and introduce us to the writing and the humour but overall doesn’t have anything to do with the rest of the story. Except that it does, because it’s direct foreshadowing to the terrifying final plot twist. Well, the movie started the same way, with the direct adaption of the funny ship of Theseus philosophy, only that the ending doesn’t include the gut wrenching plot twist. Why? Because apparently, the book lost the film makers whenever it got slightly beyond “funny monster shenanigans”.

The dry two-dimensional characters from the movie are also very frustrating. John is the funny frat-boy and Dave is the straight guy, that much they got right. The fact that they are so much more than that, and that John has a genuinely good heart while Dave has a very dark and twisted side to him, is nowhere to be found. And how come they merge the two female main characters into one (another questionable choice), and she still doesn’t have any personality? They managed to copy every scene directly from the book and still make it a badly written story just by the choice of what to keep and what not to keep. Which is a talent in itself, considering the book got away with so much bullshit.

Overall the movie is a very cheesy b-movie with questionable pacing and unexplained lore. It’s fine if you like that kind of stuff and is definitely not the worst thing I have watched. But if you’re looking for a good adaption for the book John Dies At The End this is not it.

Would I recommend the book to someone? 100%. Would I recommend the film to someone? Only if they really like cheesy b-movies. Would I recommend the book to someone and then the movie afterwards? No.

Some FF2 echoes

There are traces of and nods to Final Fantasy II all over the Final Fantasy games, but especially in Final Fantasy IV. FF2 was the first Final Fantasy that tried using a large and varied cast of individual characters, many of them playable (something that 1 and 3 didn't do), and it also tried making a story with some personal stakes for the heroes (also something 1 and 3 didn't do). On top of that, it introduced a lot of Final Fantasy staples, such as the Chocobo and a character named Cid.

Some particular character callbacks:

Yosef FF2 and Yang FF4. The middle-aged, bald martial artist. Has a family. Sacrifices himself to get the other heroes out of a trap.

Prince Gordon FF2 and prince Gilbert FF4. The cowardly prince who loses his castle during the war and needs to find his courage to fight back. Is inspired by a loved one who was killed in front of him (Gordon's brother Scott, Gilbert's girlfriend Anna).

Leila FF2 and Faris FF5. The kick-ass female pirate captain. (Although it's arguable if Faris is a woman. I think they're very easy to read as transmasc. Still a callback to Leila, though.)

Cid, of course. The very first Cid is - what else - an airship engineer. All the Cids are airship engineers throughout FF2-FF5, though not in FF6. And the only Cid that is playable in the Nintendo games is FF4's.

Baron Bogan is a minor villain in FF2, who has echoes both in Baigan FF4 and in Kefka FF6. Echoes in Baigan: High ranking official in the "good" country, and then turns around to the "evil" side. Gets turned into a monster by his new overlord. Echoes in Kefka: Dresses outrageously, is petty and cruel, and has a funny laughter sound effect that goes "ohohohohoho".

Some other minor similarities/callbacks:

Casting a spell so powerful that it kills the caster: Minwu FF2 does this to open the way to Ultima for the other heroes. Tellah FF4 does this to try to kill Golbez.

Saved by being eaten by Leviathan: In FF2 Richard is saved from the battle that kills all the other Dragoons on Dist because he was eaten by Leviathan. Your party finds him inside it there when you're eaten, too, and then you fight your way out together. In FF4, of course, Rydia is eaten by Leviathan and taken to a safe place to spend her childhood.

The ball dance: Both FF2 and FF5 have a ball dance celebration when people think the war is over (and then it turns out it's not). This dance is animated almost exactly the same.

Burmy is just a really well-constructed take on its real-world inspiration

Burmy:

Burmy is an interesting one. It's based on bagworms, which make their sheltering cocoons out of materials they find in their environments as camoflage, hence the different forms it can take on. The body itself is neutral black with bright yellow eyes in large part to create a neutral canvas on which its various cloaks can provide a high contrast, which is quite effective design.

Wor-madam does much the same thing but More, and dials up the femininity of the presentation by adding "pigtails" out of its materials and taking on a top heavy "fancy lady with a fur coat" sort of profile, again reflecting the way female bagworms remain in their larval stage their whole lives. It's solid stuff.

Mothim, then, gets the traditional bug pokémon final stage, subtyping into flying and growing wings. The black body remains and is used the same way, as a means to create contrast, but it adopts a bright yellow orange and white scheme, with especially those antennae giving its face a sharp, slightly dangerous-feeling character. It's a honey thief, according to the pokédex, which is perhaps why it has those "fingers" on its wings?

This whole line is just solid design craft, I have no complaints.

Combee:

I've never really given Combee a second thought, but upon re-examining it for this review I realized, hang on, these are freaken brilliant. It's a bee made of hexagons that are fused together into one body, quite literally embodying the way that a bee hive is a kind of gestalt entity, a unity composed of thousands of individuals joined together into one organism. The bees ARE the hive, in this case quite literally.

Vespiqueen takes the metaphor one step further, being a queen bee who is quite literally her own hive. I do feel like she ought to be designed to be way bigger, but the idea here is killer, and if you made it even slightly less kid-friendly, it would make for a killer horror monster.

But this is Pokémon and it's not going to go that far. Still, the top half of the body literally carrying a bee hive around beneath it, shaped in a way to evoke a big regal gown, that's clever, and the blood red eyes and sharp mandibles make a sharp contrast in deadliness with the cheerful adorableness of Combee, visually communicating the scale of difference in power between the two, but also that Vespiqueen isn't ruling by consensus, it's pheromone mind control and she is a tyrant. It rules.

Pachirisu:

Oooh, they keep trying to make Pikachu 2 happen, and Pikachu 2 just isn't gonna happen.

That's not Pachirisu's fault, of course, and does a much better job of distinguishing itself from Pikachu than Plusle and Minun did last generation. It's a squirrel rather than a mouse, and gets its electric theming from that bright blue streak on its body, as well as from sharp spikes in the blue fur that contrast with the soft, round adorableness of the rest of the design. I kinda feel like it woulda been better if it hadn't gone for the bright yellow cheek pads, because, again, that just reminds of Pikachu's iconic red cheek pads and invites comparison, but also, it confuses the color scheme a bit. Am I meant to understand the blue color and spikes as representing its electric power, or is it the yellow? Even the Pokédex gets a bit confused whether it stores its electricity in the cheeks or in the big fluffy tail. Electric cheeks is Pikachu's thing, so focusing on the tail and designing that out would have given it much more of its own identity.

For all the comparisons I'm making though, it's not fair to call it just a Pika-clone, it does have its own ideas, and frankly I would have loved to see an evolution for it that really leans into the static electric fluffy fur concept.

Might as well just remove everything from the game but the Undyne the Undying and Sans fights without dialogue since there's literally no stakes in the story whatsoever if that's the case, just do the two challenging fights then be done.

The Game

Summary: You were brought to Jujutsu Tech after an incident in a hotel you were staying in. It was discovered you had an ability that could be related to curse powers, however, you have no interest in such things and are trying to become an international Go player. Staying at the remote location has you bored and lacking company. In the effort to alleviate your want for someone to play Go against, you happen upon a man who harbors an old curse spirit in him. The curse spirit agrees to play a game with you, but things do not go the way you expected.

            The clacking of stones against the wooden board seemed to echo through the large bedroom. You dropped your book of Go problems and flopped backward onto the floor. A loud sigh escaped your lips. ��This is so boring!” No matter how much you shouted in the empty halls of the ‘school’ you’d been dropped into, those who could hear you did nothing about your situation.

            A few months ago, you’d been living a normal life, or as normal as life could be. Ever since you were young, you’d been able to see monsters and things others couldn’t. At first, the monsters would scare you, but as you got older you learned to ignore them. Before you were brought to this place called Jujutsu Tech, the hotel you were staying at was attacked by some of these monsters.

            You’d never seen the creatures try to attack others and never in a group before. As you were trying to get out of the building, a weird group of people calling themselves jujutsu sorcerers came and got rid of the monsters. None of this would have concerned you except it turned out the reason you never had to worry about more than seeing monsters was because they couldn’t see you.

            This caused a stir among the sorcerers and since you had no idea what any of it meant yourself, they decided to take you to a remote location and ‘protect’ you. The private college was in a beautiful area and the scenery was relaxing, but the last thing you wanted was to be stuck in the middle of nowhere while trying to chase your dream of competing in the international Go tournaments. So far you weren’t assigned to any of the courses or whatever the college supposedly taught, so you were left to your own devices more often than not.

            Now, you were stuck in a dorm room, practicing Go problems, and generally being bored out of your mind. The school wouldn’t even provide you with a laptop and internet connection so you could play your games online. At this rate, you’d never grow as a player or continue to build your reputation so that you could be nominated for a tournament spot. To top everything off, whenever you did see someone and ask when they’d let you go, you got vague answers and indefinite timelines. Effectively, you were a prisoner despite their claims otherwise.

            As you lay on your floor pouting and toying with the buttons on the high-necked, black uniform top you’d been given, sounds of life came from down the hall. Some students had been placed in the rooms down from yours and they were a noisy bunch. You could often hear them coming and going through the day, but never had a chance to speak to them. It was midafternoon now and maybe they’d be done with whatever crazy classes this prison of a school taught. Maybe one of them could play Go.

            Excited at the prospect of a game as well as human contact, you hopped up from the floor and booked it out your door. You slid down the hall in your black leggings rather than sprinting down and knocked on one of the doors you’d heard voices from before. Taking a breath to compose yourself and smooth down the black box pleat skirt of the uniform that apparently even teachers were required to wear, you knocked on the door. “Come in.” A cheerful voice called and you slowly opened the door.

            The young man inside the room looked at you curiously and did not expect a stranger to enter. “Are you a new student here too?” He seemed like a decent person and you felt comfortable around him right away. His hair color was unusual and it appeared he had some sort of tattoo under each eye, but you weren’t one to judge. After all, you’d seen some things that were far worse than dyed hair and facial tattoos.

            “Not unless they have some college professor who has yet to introduce themselves.” You shrugged and tried to keep your circumstances to yourself. The uniform you were given certainly said you belonged here, but something in the way you were treated made you feel it was best to keep your circumstances to yourself. “Um, by chance do you play Go?” Not wanting to give him the chance to further inquire you wasted no time in asking him. He shook his head and your disappointment must have shown on your face because he quickly introduced himself and tried asking you some questions about the game.

            After a brief introduction and conversation on what the game of Go was, you learned that the young man, Yuji, was stuck in this place much like you were. One of the monsters, called cursed spirits, was possessing him and he was slated for execution because of this. His story made you question your circumstances more and made you think you might want to find an exit strategy.

            You had a pleasant conversation with Yuji and learned that the curse possessing him was named Sukuna and he lived a thousand years ago. His story about eating mummified fingers was pretty gross and you made sure he knew that. The two of you laughed about things for a bit before it suddenly hit you. A thousand years ago was the peak of the Heian period. In the Heian period, Go was very popular.

            “What about Sukuna? Can he play Go?” Your eyes lit up at the possibility. So what if he was supposed to be some viscous, ancient, monster? They’d never hurt you before and there’d be no reason for one to hurt you over a game. Yuji smiled at your enthusiasm and let you know he had no idea. When you asked if he could talk to Sukuna and find out if he not only played the game but would play a game with you a mouth popped up under one of the young man’s eyes.

            “What do I get if I win?” For a normal person, the sight of an extra mouth talking on someone’s face might be off-putting, but you’d seen far worse. Excitement built in you at the prospect of a game with someone instead of the continuous Go problem-solving you’d been doing. The only problem being you had no idea what a monster possessing a person would want. “Well?”

            The grinning face on the side of Yuji’s cheek was getting impatient. “Um… what do you want?” You’d come to this place with nothing and had nothing to offer the monster, curse, demon, whatever the thing was supposed to be. Silence held in the air for a few minutes before Yuji opened his mouth to speak, but the mouth on the side of his face laughed for a moment.

            “Let’s play your game.” The grin started to fade from Yuji’s face and black tribal tattoos began to appear over his skin. His features shifted from a relaxed expression to one of malevolent power. The presence of the man before you was most certainly this creature called Sukuna. Yuji had explained that Sukuna could take over his body and the shift wasn’t an unappealing sight. You half expected one of the malformed beings you normally saw. Not a normal-looking human with tattoos. The being had the strong presence of someone used to leading and being in power. Perhaps some feudal lord? That would be even better. Feudal lords used Go as a teaching tool and the thought of having a challenging opponent filled you with anticipation.

            Before the monster could change his mind about playing a game, you dashed from the room to get the Go board and stones. You gathered your stuff as quickly as you could and carefully ran back to the room with Sukuna waiting for you. His eyes lazily watched you as you excitedly entered the room and set the board down. In your excitement, you almost forgot that the rules of the game had changed over the last thousand years.

            Instead of teaching the man before you about the new rules and pressing your luck on your ability to get him to play, you decided to adapt your play style to the old rules since the biggest change was the komi that forces the black stone player to be in a handicap on points. With the board set up, Sukuna grabbed a handful of white stones to start the nigiri for who would play which color.

            You pulled out two black stones and Sukuna counted the white stones and came up with an even number. The two of you traded your stone boxes and began the game. The room was silent but for the soft clacking of the stones on the board. As things progressed, you were glad you thought to ask the curse to play you. Sukuna was good, very good at the game. Playing the game with him almost made you feel like you were playing against a well-seasoned feudal lord or general, and the thought made you smile. Then again, you may be just that starved for companionship and a good game.

            Each of you placed stones on the board and as the game progressed forward, you found yourself on the defensive much of the time. Sukuna was a ruthless player. He knew just how to back you into a corner by sacrificing a small set of his deep black stones to capture far more of your pearl-white ones than he sacrificed.

            Several hours passed before you stared at the board in defeat. It was a good game, but the body possessed by a monster had beaten you. Though you lost, you weren’t upset and a smile spread across your lips as you declared yourself the loser. Sukuna grinned when you admitted your defeat. Excited to review the game, you started talking about the nuances of the moves and reviewed what you should have done and why.

            “I’ve decided on my prize.” Sukuna’s authoritative voice broke through your rambling and as you began to look up from the board, you felt yourself pushed back against the floor. Faster than your eyes could follow, he had you on your back with a hand around your throat. You could only just breathe through the constriction and you tried pressing against the being now on top of you. In vain, you tried to speak and struggled against the much stronger man.

            “Now, now. This is what you agreed to.” A smile spread across his face, but there was nothing friendly in that smile. Panic started to grip you as your eyes met the dangerous scarlet eyes of your assailant. You tried desperately to figure out just what you’d agreed to when a hand slid under your shirt and felt along the curves of your sides.

            The hand around your throat prevented you from voicing your protests and as you tried to struggle, Sukuna pressed the weight of his body against yours. Never in your life had a curse monster ever seemed to notice you let alone try to put a hand on you. Unsure of what actions to take or exactly what this situation was, you stopped struggling for a minute.

            Sukuna used this time to rip off your uniform button-up and the undershirt. An attempt at a protest escaped from your lips, the but tattooed man ignored you. His eyes studied your body and his finger traced over your bra. It didn’t seem like he was going to eat you, but you weren’t sure you liked where things were going.  Maybe the reason he was able to interact with you while other curses were not was because he was possessing a human body.

            After a few moments of studying your body, the man pressed against you, grinned, and whispered in your ear. “I’ll just take your body as my prize.” With those words, he bit down hard on your shoulder. The scream you would have voiced was cut off by the hand still gripping your throat. Despite your best efforts to throw him off, the many-eyed man was far too strong for you to push away. All you had wanted was a game of Go to pass the time.

            The pain from the deep bite inflicted on your shoulder lessened and Sukuna tore your bra away. A brief wave of anger washed through you, but your anger was short-lived as the next article of clothing to get torn off was your skirt. Almost fully exposed to the man before you, tears formed at the corner of your eyes in frustration, anger, fear, and embarrassment.

            Sukuna leaned in and callously licked the tears from your cheek as they began to fall. Your reactions seemed to fuel the cruel being and inevitably your underwear was quickly removed like the rest of your clothing. A small defiant part of you wished dearly that he’d remove his hand from your throat so you could send a few choice insults his way along with a good slap. The curse’s eyes never left your body as he drew the fingers of his free hand to his mouth.

            His tattooed tongue ran over them in a more seductive way than you wanted to admit and despite your mix of anger and fear, the lustful look in his eye brought a slight flush to your cheeks and made your breath catch. Seemingly not noticing your slight arousal, the curse used his knee to spread your legs and situated himself between them.

            Any doubts you had about exactly what this man wanted from you vanished as you felt him spread you and press his fingers to your womanhood. He slid his fingers teasingly along your folds before slipping them inside you. The feeling was uncomfortable at first, but your body adjusted much faster than you expected as his experienced movements began to draw warmth from your core.

            Soft moans threatened to leave your mouth as the man’s expert movements brought pleasure to your body that you desperately wanted to deny. You didn’t want this, yet your body was defying you and you bit your lip to keep your voice in. While Sukuna’s fingers worked your body and reached the most sensitive spots within you, his tongue and teeth found their way along your body. Marking it with bites deep enough to draw blood.

            His ministrations continued and your will started to break. It wasn’t long before your reason started slipping from you and your desire began to build. It was like some spell of lust was cast over you. Lewd sounds filled the room as your companion continued working his fingers inside you, toying with your sensitive places, and drawing you into his pace. Your control started to break and a strangled moan escaped from your lips.

Sukuna had three of his fingers inside you, stretching you, but not filling you. Your body moved on its own and your hips rocked and twisted in an attempt to find fulfillment. Tears of shame ran down your cheek. The devilish man pinning you down laughed softly and suddenly the warmth of his body was gone. His fingers were removed from inside you and a whimper escaped your lips as the grip on your throat was also gone. You desperately hoped the curse was done with you.

            Your eyes found their way to the man who’d been on top of you and he tore off the clothing binding his body. The sight of his tattooed, muscular body awoke something in you. It was like a seal within you was finally broken and you began to lose yourself to this thing that was awoken. It drove your desire again and despite everything telling you not to let this happen, you began to desperately want the curse before you. Need him. This thing deep within you was bubbling up with desire for this creature. “Sukuna…” Before you could form the words to beg him to let you go, he was on top of you again and the emptiness left by his fingers was filled with something bigger.

            Sukuna let out a satisfied moan as his member was engulfed in your warmth and you tangled your fingers in the pink locks of his hair. It's been one week since the tour around Europe started and the night it's about to start. The opening band is ready to go up on stage and Noah waits backstage so he can watch the show, just like every night when they are playing. For the first time, Bad Omens is touring with Forever Damned, an all female band from Finland. At first, everyone was worried: How will it be to tour with five womens? Is it going to be too much different? Are they going to get used to the Bad Omens lifestyle of touring?. Well, everything is working fine, except for Noah's obsession with the lead singer, Nori Nurmi. It sounds so cliché for him, but he couldn't help himself this time; it happened before he could do something. When they met each other for the first time, his eyes captured the image of a woman wearing a black sporty shorts and matching black top, her cherry red hair with lighter orange highlights tied in a messy bun while she punched the air and swung side to side just like a professional boxer while she was training behind the tour bus. He was hypnotized by her moves, the way her legs were slightly inclined and the fabric of her clothes was glued to her body and showed all her curves. There were sweat drops on her forehead while her green eyes were focused like she was punching someone real, her lips parted to exhale the air. He can't erase this scene of his mind anymore. Seeing her in person for the first time made him see how intense and eye-catching her aura is, Noah is totally captured by her Scandinavian beauty.

After seeing Forever Damned playing through the week, Noah already knows how the band works, most precisely Nori. She likes to do a warm up, doing some stretches like an athlete would do before a race or a match. Her outfits are always seductive and provocative, tonight she's wearing a black pair of shorts that almost shows her butt and a black leather corset, making her huge boobs pop out. Her high heels boots makes him wonder how she can stand on them and play a concert at the same time. Her lips are covered in a dark brown lipstick and looks even more appetizing. A red light spots her, she sings with a clean voice and it's like hearing an angel but, at the same time, it's sexual and makes Noah feel his whole body shivering.

It didn't need too much time for Noah to realize that Nori is a completely different person off the stage. When she's up there, performing with her four best friends, she is like a sex demon, seducing everyone and enchanting the crowd with her voice, always moving her hips with the sound of the frantic drums. But when she is backstage, living her life, she is sweet and humble. It's almost like she can't see how perfect she is. Time flies when Noah is watching Nori perform. Soon, their set is over and the girls are thanking the crowd, who seems to love them. When the singer leaves the stage, she goes straight to the green room, making Noah think that she is avoiding him. He is disappointed, he really wanted to say some words to her, but it's better for him to wait and let her have some privacy. He needs to get focused because, soon, it's his time to go up on the stage.

Since Noah had some issues with his voice while touring in the United States, this time they decided to go slow and have more days off so everyone can rest. This means that they are free to spend some time chilling at the bar close to the parking lot where the buses are. The mood it's nice, everyone seems to be having a good time. The bands already started to build a friendship and the guys are thinking that it is cool to spend some time with the five Finnish girls. Auri, the bassist, it's the perfect example of an antisocial gothic girl: she doesn't speak much but knows how to tell a good joke, always full of sarcasm. Her extremely straight black long hair is always hanging loose on her back while she tends to be drinking some beer or coffee. Maila, the drummer, it's kind of hyperactive - maybe that's why she chose the drums as her main instrument. Like her bandmate, she enjoys having some beer throughout the day but she is definitely more social and likes to be around people. Mirva is Nori's sister and is hyper focused on practicing guitar. They look alike, some people even thought that they were twins, but they don't have the same aura. Nori is way more intimidating while Mirva has a totally chill vibe around her. The last one but not least, Lara, the second guitar player, it's a blond bombshell. She's always seducing everyone around, flirting and making jokes so she can make the guys laugh. And of course she already put her eyes on Noah.

The two of them talk, Noah holding a bottle of beer while she drinks a dose of what seems to be whisky. These Finnish girls don't play around when it comes to alcohol. The bar is a small place and the crews of the two bands are enough to make the place totally full like they are having a private party. The lights are low but not enough to obstruct the view, there's a lot of pictures of soccer teams hanging on the walls and a huge TV screen that streams a hockey match. Nori is sitting close to the bar, her legs crossed while she slowly drinks her bottle of beer. She doesn't drink like their bandmates because she likes to take care of her voice.

Lara tries to catch Noah's attention but Nori is everything he cares about right now. It seems that something is off for her, like she is not enjoying the time with her new friends and crew. Soon, the hands of the blond guitarist are playing with Noah's hair. He laughs, trying to be nice to her but of course she is not the one who he wants to talk to; he just doesn't want to be rude. She gets closer but his eyes are not on her, they are staring at Nori, hoping that she sees that she is all that matters to Noah right now.

"Who are you looking at?" Lara asks, turning herself so she can find the spot that Noah doesn't stop looking at "Oh… Of course it's her. If I was you I would change my mind".

"Why?" he asks. Now she got his attention.

"Nori never looks at any man while she's on tour. The girl is like a fucking nun".

"Again, why? Did something bad happen?".

"It's a long story… and she is too negative. She thinks that it's not a good idea to hook up with anyone in a band because it will not end well and the tour can get ruined, blah blah blah" she rolls her eyes "She's so fucking professional".

"Maybe she didn't not find anyone who would be worth taking the risk".

"Believe me, you're not the first to put eyes on her. We've been on the road for a while, always touring with lots of guys. There's always someone full of hope that thinks he can have a chance with her".

Lara it's not trying to get Noah just for her, she doesn't care about that. If he doesn't want to spend some time on the bed with her, she just moves on. The guitarist it's just trying to give him good advice so he doesn't waste his time and energy with Nori. Now, Noah is unsure about taking the first step. For the first time in a while, he is feeling insecure about a woman. Now that Bad Omens has reached fans around the world he knows that there's a bunch of women crazy about him and who would give anything to have a chance to suck his cock. Is this kind of misogynist? Of course it is, but it's the truth. He can have any girl he wants - even though he doesn't find it fair to use women like that - but he already understands that Nori it's not like those girls. It's like there's a shield around her and that matches with what Lara just said about her friend.

"Maybe that's why she is avoiding me" he says.

"Yep" she takes a sip of whisky.

Quickly turning around to watch her friend, Lara sees that Nori it's acting weird. Just like Noah had noticed, the singer doesn't seem right. She seems bothered but she is alone, there's no one talking to her. Lara and Nori have been friends since teenage years and they know each other like the back of their own hands. The blond one knows that her friend is observing Noah talking to her.

"I think you got lucky" she says "Let me try something".

She starts to play with his hair again, and soon Nori drinks the rest of the beer in the bottle in one long sip, taking everything down her throat. Her eyes facing the floor like she's trying her best to not look into Noah's direction but soon she can't resist. She's staring at them intensely, wishing that she could be at Lara's place, her body clearly uncomfortable at the stool while she squeezes her thighs with her both hands. Her friend has seen this before so she knows exactly what's the reason why Nori is acting like this.

"Mm, If you pay attention you can see that she's slowly clenching her thighs together" Lara says.

"It's hot" Noah smirks.

Suddenly, the singer leaves, trying to hide any emotion that might be on her face right now. She walks furiously to the parking lot and Noah follows her. It's dark and there's no one around them, so it's the perfect chance for Noah to do something because they are away from the crew and their bandmates, from all the drama that they would create if he flirted with her.

"Why are you following me?" She asks, finally slowing the steps so Noah can approach her.

"Are you okay?" He's cynical.

"I'm fine. I just need some sleep".

"Wait!".

She tries to enter the bus but he grabs her by her arm, pressing his fingers on her skin. For a brief moment, Nori allows herself to feel his touch on her, how his big hand can hold her with such strength that makes her whole body shiver as a warmness grows inside her jeans. But soon, she starts to get mad at his audacity.

"Don't you ever touch me without my permission again. You should leave me alone" her voice is firm.

"What If I don't?"

"Then I will have to punch you in the face".

She's not lying. Nori has the guts to punch Noah right in the face and her fist is ready to take into action and make his perfect nose bleed. Noah can't help but laugh at the situation. She looks even more adorable when she's angry.

"You're a very bad liar, Nori" he says.

"You don't know me".

"So let me know you, then".

She's silent, her brain can't form any single word right now. All the strength she has is being used to prevent her from melting under his touch. Her red hair is matching the color that's in her face, her nostrils widening as her breath gets quicker. Noah is loving to see that, for the first time, Nori is being vulnerable. There's an extreme desire inside his body, an urge to feel her lips locked on his, to feel her tongue swirling inside his mouth, to take her body for him and possess her, touch every single piece of her skin. Her warm breath is crashing against him, he feels like he can't hold it anymore.

"Good fucking night, Noah Sebastian".

She lets herself go of his hand and goes inside the bus in a hurry, closing the door with so much anger that it makes a huge sound and makes Noah wonder if she didn't break something. He leans his back against the bus, slowly going down and crouching while he holds his face in disbelief. They were so close to each other for the first time, the sexual tension between them was so huge that Noah felt his cock awakening inside his pants.
