Today is Black Femme Character Dependency's 3rd Year!!!

A History: Funny enough, it began for friends. I was one of the oldest people in the Henry Danger fandom and had a lot of Black friends there who, when the show ended felt like the Black female character hadn't really gotten what they wanted out of the finale, but I was more concerned about if we'd still gather and stuff if we didn't have any common fandom to unite through.

After a few conversations about Black female characters in general (and us not having too many fandoms all in common), I decided that I'd make this space as a gift to my friends where they would be able to have Black female and feminine characters collected in one safe space to reblog or discuss without having to worry much about fandom racism or "colorblindness."

So frequently, some of the things I reblog are not of fandoms I'm a part of because its stuff that friends asked for, and I do the drudging through tags to find rebloggable content for them.

Then so many other people began to follow, which is pretty dope, though at the end of the day, it's still a place where me and my homies can have things that pertain to these types of characters that are often widely overlooked or underappreciated within their fandom spaces.

I copy and pasted my response from messages between myself and a follower. I thought today could be the perfect day to answer this question for anybody who wishes to know.

GAY ICON JOHNNIE RAY

Music critics have cites Johnnie Ray as a major influence on modern popular music. Tony Bennett, a music icon himself, called Ray the "father of rock and roll". With his rhythm-based singing style and animated stage personality, Ray’s music had strong jazz and blues influences.

After signing with Colombia Records in 1951, Ray was assigned to their Olek Label. Okek featured R&B music with primarily African American performers. When Colombia discovered Ray was Caucasian, they move him to their main label (racism operated in mysterious ways). Ray’s 78rpm single “Cry” sold over two million copies and he quickly became a teen idol.

This led to an appearance on Ed Sullivan’s “Toast of the Town” TV show, and being cast in “There's No Business Like Show Business” (1954) along side Ethyl Merman and Marilyn Monroe.

Prior to being signed to Columbia, Ray was arrested in Detroit for soliciting an undercover cop for sex in the restroom of a burlesque theater. He pleaded guilty but since he was relatively unknown, newspapers did not report the story. But after his success, rumors about Ray being a homosexual began to spread.

Despite this, Ray married Marilyn Morrison, daughter of a nightclub the owner in 1952. The event was attended by then New York Mayor Vincent Impellitten and the ceremony made headlines New York Daily News.

According to friends, Morrison was aware of the rumors and said she "straighten it out." But the couple separated in 1953 and divorced in 1954.

During this time, Ray became friends with journalist and television game show panelist Dorothy Kilgallen. It’s been rumored that her youngest child, Kerry Kollmar, was fathered by Ray.

In 1959, Ray was arrested again for soliciting an undercover cop at a gay bar described as “a haven for musicians”. Ray was found not guilty at the trial.

Ray suffered from alcoholism most of his life, and he was arrested at least once for public intoxication. In 1960, he was hospitalized for tuberculosis and according to his biographer Jonny Whiteside, he quit drinking. But in 1969, after Ray returned to the United States from a European tour with Judy Garland, he began drinking heavily. In February 1990, Ray died from liver failure in Los Angeles.

The Ultimate Vriska Poll - Calling for Nominations

My Tumblr Sexywoman poll is going well and I'm having a lot of fun, so I'm thinking of holding a poll to find Tumblr's most iconic Vriska-archetype character. If you don't know what a Vriska archetype is, Tumblr user @doubleca5t coined the term as follows:

Sexypedia didn't have a specific page for the Vriska archetype (the link shown in the screenshot leads to a page titled "Controversial"), but here's what it has to say on the topic:

Now that Tumblr's had time to get a smattering of blorbos that can be considered Vriskas, I want to pit these bad bitches against each other. I want to put them in a box and shake them until they fight to the death. I want the intense campaigning, voter fraud, and sabotage that happened around the original Vriska Serket in the Tumblr Sexywoman poll by Tumblr user @lutzlig. But I want it 32-fold.

The start date for this tournament will tentatively be February 19th. The structure will likely be like the Tumblr Sexywoman poll. Before that, I will be collecting a list of at least 16, preferably 32, Vriska-archetype characters. I will be considering nominations until February 17th, 6 PM PST.

The character you nominate must fulfill at least 4/5 of the requirements of a Vriska. UPDATE: I have decided to expand requirement 4 to just "queer" instead of strictly "attracted to women." Requirements 2, 3, and 5 are mandatory. This is so that male (and nb) characters like Bakugou from BNHA can still participate. As well as characters that don't really get shipped a lot. Like Lilith from The Owl House. (I'm sorry queen I've found someone more controversial) However, I will reject characters if I feel they fall more into other archetypes. Like Komaedas.
