When I was watching Karakasa last night, I remember thinking that the way the movie was using the spiral face effect was really interesting. I've always thought of the faceless spooky crowds in this series as a symptom of an area being under the effect of a mononoke (this seems especially obvious with the mannequin vs not-mannequin scenes in Bakeneko), but Karakasa uses the spirals more as a marker of individuality vs self-erasure for the women of Ooku. It's a reflection of where they are psychologically in any given moment.

It eventually hit me, though, that the women of the Ooku erasing themselves and throwing away their individuality (and any coworker who dares to be individual) is what created the mononoke in the first place. That psychological symptom and its consequences are its entire essence, its truth and regret. So when we see a character's face become a spiral, it is a sign of them throwing away their individuality for the sake of the Ooku, but it's also still a sign of the karakasa's influence, because the psychology and the mononoke are inextricably linked with one another.

honestly obsessed with this quote from the cool down thing from ep 1 of downfall from taliesin: "honestly, this is just caduceus' wildmother. this is literally just a version of caduceus going, "perhaps i wasn't clear. i'm hungry all the time, and i'm violent - hi, im nature. nice to meet you."" like, the idea that nature/the wildmother is not only beautiful and warm and holding (as depicted often with the wildmother and caduceus, she's often described as holding him in commune like a mother holds a child) but also the wild sea (for fjord) and also something that is always hungry. like the wolf that asha is, even when she's in the shape of an elf woman. and also like, i wonder if there's a connection there to caduceus being so thin (unhealthily thin, as described when he's first introduced. something like how uncared for nature gets swallowed up by vines, or dies without water. kind of like the savalirwood and the grove and and)

also inchresting to me that taliesin says this is a version of caduceus. like what do u mean by that. a version of what he worships? im guessing something like that. but also a person he’d be if he wasn’t treated with kindness? like how exandria is being ravaged and burned and destroyed, the air choked with smoke and ash, by the calamity? like hungry feral wolves?

and i am also thinking abt how the first conversation tmn ever have with cad they ask him if he’d be willing to kill people because he’s soft and among nature and standing in a garden making them tea, and he replies of course, have you seen nature? violence is extremely natural. (and thats not framed as something good or bad, its just true.) like word im hungry all the time and im violent! lets fucking gooooo!!!!!

apparently one of main guys directing the god damn zelda movie "aims for it to be a live-action miyazaki"

first of all, there is a REASON why all his films are ANIMATED, animation can do things live action will never be able to no matter how much shitty CGI effects you pump into it

secondly, given how any possible ghibli influence in totk is so clearly purely a superficial attempt of copying aesthetics and NOTHING more is making me more convinced that movie will be shit

miyazakis works have been reduced to whimsical childrens fantasy with a specific kind of aesthetic in the mindset of many and i HATE it, its so much more than that and seeing how much totk has been compared to it, again, purely bc of some aesthetics reminiscent of his movies is still driving me nuts

the zelda series, especially the most recent entry, is very clearly lacking in everything that miyazaki excels at and i am not confident that anyone in higher positions whos working on that darn movie understands any of it and will just go for the usual copying of surface level aesthetics tm
