Labyrinth, Chapter 5 (Interlude): The Plane Was Going Down

Premise: The fateful night when a monkeybomb goes wrong and Vi leaves Powder. Standing in between them, what will you do?

Months later.

Flames. Smoke. Blood.

That’s all Vi can process after the battle, after Powder’s monkey bomb had gone horribly wrong and ended with Vander, Mylo, and Claggor dead. Vi’s always been strong, always been brave and composed. But in this moment: she’s just a broken teenagers, tear marks staining her cheek.

You cough from the smokey air, wiping your own tears away as you stumble to your feet. “Vi,” you cough, stepping over to her. 

Vi’s eyes widen when she sees you. “What are you doing here?” She exclaims. “I told you not to come. You could’ve-“ she cuts herself off, gripping your shoulder. She’s half frustrated you didn’t listen, consumed by her grief over her adoptive father and brothers, and half relieved you’re okay.

“Vi!” Powder bounds over to the both of you in childlike excitement. “I did it! My monkeybomb finally worked.”

Vi’s eyes go dead. Your stomach drops.

“You did this?” Vi stares at her younger sister in disbelief. “Why-?"

“I was saving you both,” Powder responds, but you can hear her excitement fading when she takes in the casualties, her own tears beginning to form. “I- I just wanted to help.”

“I told you to stay!” Vi moves through the stages of grief more quickly than you’ve ever seen, anger overcoming her. 

You see her hand coming up, and whatever adrenaline that rushes through you at that moment is enough to cause you to step between the sisters. You know Vi’s angry, that she can’t hit her sister. Not like this. Vi’s hand falters, but her eyes flash with fury. She steps around you in a moment. “I’m going!” 

“No!” Powder shrieks, completely distraught. “Why are you leaving me?”

“Because you’re a jinx!” Vi screams, voice hoarse from her devastation that’s hidden behind her anger.

“Stop!” You step in, eyes shiny with your own tears. “Stop, we can’t do this!”

“She’s the reason for all of this!” Vi seethes, and before you know it, she’s turning her back on both of you and moving away from the scene. Half of her expects you to follow her, but all she knows is that she needs to get away from the area, get away from all the pain she’s in.

The next few minutes are a blur. You’re torn between Vi and Powder. You want to run after Vi, to comfort her, to make sure she’s okay and bring her back to reconcile. But you can’t leave Powder like this, helpless on her own.

“Give me one second,” you gasp through your sobs, trying to soothe Powder with just your voice. “We’ll figure this out, I-“

You cut yourself off when you see Enforcers headed straight for Vi’s retreating form. “Vi!” You scream louder than you ever have before, your feet carrying you towards her. But she’s too far, and you’re helpless as she’s taken by them.

You sob, casting a glance back at Powder, tears blurring your vision to the point where you almost can’t see. But what you do see, in that moment, is a tall figure that you recognize as Silco. Headed for Powder.

No.

You’re sprinting, feet moving more quickly than they ever have. You can’t process anything, there’s no thoughts. It’s pure instinct and adrenaline when you scoop a weeping Powder into your arms and run until you can’t breathe anymore, until all you can see are the tops of the Piltover buildings that loom overhead.

Eccentric man: Ahh, if it isn't my unconventional friends, are you enjoying zhe convention?

Ruby and Jaune just sighed, cringing at what monstrosity of a weapon this man would conjur up this time.

Eccentric man: Don't look so morose! I've kept your dear girlfriend's vords in mind and have gotten you two more weapons that are both tactical and practical as well!

The man pulled out yet another case. This one was considerably smaller than his last weapons opening up said case the man let out a creepy giggle before turning it around to both Ruby and Jaune, who peered in before looking at each other confused.

Ruby: It's a pistol...

Jaune: And a doll...strapped to dynamite?

Eccentric man: Not just any doll, this here is the Monkey Bomb, created by zomeone who is still VEXING ME TO ZHIS VERY DAY! ahem...uh it's really quite simple, wind up the monkey, toss it to your allies who are surrounded, and the monkey will attract all Grimm nearby and once they are within range...BOOM!

The man laughed as Jaune reached in and picked up the monkeybomb, feeling slightly disturbed at how a child's toy had been twisted into a Grimm killing device.

Eccentric man: It also does a little jingle, and its explosion rivals one of the explosive shells from your orange hair bomber friend, although I do ask you to refrain from tossing into fire.

Ruby: That is oddly specific...

Eccentric man: zhe monkey doesn't like fire...

Jaune sets the monkey back down before pointing to the pistol next to it.

Jaune: And what pray tell is this?

Eccentric man: Zhat, my dear boy, is called 'Conversion Ready-Binary Repeater-Standard,' or CRBRS, Cerberus, for zhort. Zhis little pistol fires concentrate Lazer energy and only use small amounts of lightning dust combined with regular .45acp!

Jaune picks up the gun and aims it before suddenly a ball pops out of its of the weapons center as if began floating around Jaune.

Eccentric man: It also has a copy-cat ai companion that shoots out extra shots at NO cost to your own ammo supply, I zhink it makes its own internally, and the AI can talk, but who it chooses to voice is completely up to it.

The copycat companion still floated around Jaune as he just looked the gun over and handed it too, Ruby.

Jaune: What do you think?

Ruby: it seems nice, but I was thinking more of a bigger gun for you...

Eccentric man: Ah gut, Zhen, you vill be pleased to know this veapon comes with a modification you can attach to turn this pistol into a rifle with more supreme firepower.

The man hands Jaune a mod kit labels 'Blazer Mod Kit'.

Eccentric man: This kit can be assembled on the fly, and it vill keeps you in zhe fight as well as still using the same ammo type!

Jaune just nodded as Ruby handed him back the gun.

Ruby: Well, I mean, it seems perfect, Pistol that can turn into an AR as well as having a little Ai copy cat that also fires back at Grimm.

CopyCat AI: Hello Again~

Jaune: ...

Jaune: What the hell...?

Ruby: W... Was that Pyrrha?!

Eccentric Man: Vell, I did say it vould be random.

Jaune: I... I don't...

Copycat AI: Keep going forward.

Jaune: I... (Sets pistol down) I can't.

Eccentric Man: Oh? Vhat do you mean?

Jaune: I... I just...

Ruby: Jaune and Pyrrha were really close, and this weapon is... kind of opening up old wounds.

Eccentric Man: Ah, yes... Zomezing along ze lines of sehnsucht und weltschmerz, ja? Zay no more. I will refrain from any furzer, er, voices from occurring. But ze Monkey Bomb is ztill sehr gut, ja?

Ruby: It would be, but uh, the thing is that our teammate uses a LOT of fire, so catching it would be-

Eccentric Man: Ah, of course. Very vell. (Loads up crate) Until we meet again. I must say you kinder are quite picky vith your veapons, but zen again, zo am I. (Leaves)

Ruby: Jaune?

Jaune: I'm fine. I just... I wouldn't have come here if I knew I was going to hear her again.

Ruby: I know.

do you think arcane (unintentionally) has anti-war messaging? or at least, they're real heavy-handed on the costs of war?

because season 1 episode 3 is entitled "the base violence necessary for change" and that's the one where deckard kills benzo and grayson while ekko watches, and then vi has to fight like, a dozen goons while trying to save vander. and then powder kills her brothers with the monkeybomb and vander kills deckard and dies from being stabbed and getting shimmered out the ass, and vi slaps powder in rage and grief.

and even that is set against the larger view of "oh god children having to fight just to keep things the way that they are" and i dunno it's 3am my train of thought's just run its route.

Hey everyone, while I work on a few different fics, I wanted to talk about Arcane. I haven’t really seen anyone talk about this or make comparisons so I thought I’d put in my 2 cents.

Warnings: Spoilers for Arcane, contains theories/thoughts for S2, lemme know if I need to add more

Ok so we all know that moment when Powder makes her monkeybomb and lets it loose in the building right? It was devastating, yes and I really loved seeing the different perspectives of the bomb going off so we got to see what happened to everyone.

But I’d like to talk about the first person to get hit. Deckard. Powder also gets hit around the same time and gets blasted off the window ledge, but I wanna focus on Deckard. At this point, Deckard is the closest to the bomb when it goes off, but he is a Shimmer-monster.

The first time I saw that scene, I actually expected him to be at least injured. I pretty much knew the bomb wouldn’t have straight killed him but I did expect him to be hurt. He seemed disoriented at first until Silco’s order of ‘kill them’ gets his attention.

I’ve seen Arcane 6 times start-finish along with watching individual episodes out of order and honestly, I hadn’t thought about Deckard a lot until a few days ago when I watched the finale and it finally hit me. I’m probably stupid or wrong about this and as an Arcane-only fan, I have no idea if this goes against the game or not, but I think Deckard was purposely supposed to survive Powder’s monkeybomb.

Lemme elaborate.

The setting of Arcane (currently) is Piltover, which is a huge city consisting of 2 parts, the ‘Topside’ (Piltover) and the Undercity (Zaun). They seem to be pretty opposite of each other so it makes sense that the technology available would be wildly different as well. In Piltover, we have the Hextech technology from Jayce/Viktor. In the Undercity, we have Shimmer/drug enhancements. Then we have Viktor, who merges the two, but that’s a whole other post but Viktor does play a role.

Anyways, this monkeybomb explosion is the first time we see the beginnings of both sciences interacting with each other. The bomb envelopes Shimmer-Deckard and even reaches Singed, his lab and Shimmer. And, as stated earlier, Shimmer-Deckard appears ok after the blast.

At first, I thought Deckard was supposed to be a sort of ‘sacrificial’ character to show the effect of Shimmer, but I also realize he’s actually pretty similar to Viktor. Both are from the Undercity and partner with a morally gray character (Viktor willing, Deckard not). Both are also forced to use Shimmer from their respective morally gray character (Viktor’s illness makes him feel like he has to while Silco literally kidnaps Deckard and makes him ‘volunteer’). And they both end up getting addicted to the Shimmer after their first use. Deckard willingly takes the vial Silco offered to him in ep3 as Vi+co try breaking Vander out and Viktor willingly goes to Singed for help in ep7 and is given a ‘variant’ of Shimmer, which Viktor merges with the hexcore.

Because Shimmer-Deckard was shown to survive the monkeybomb explosion *(which had 4 crystals inside)* with little injuries, I think that’s what’s gonna save Viktor from Jinx’s Fishbones rocket in the finale. I know I said I was an Arcane-only fan, and it’s true as I’ve never played LoL, but I did do some research about the game over the times I’ve watched the series. I used google, so please correct me if I’m wrong about anything.

Jinx uses a stabilized version of the hexgem to power Fishbones, but I believe the stabilized version is more powerful than the ‘un stabilized’ (jagged kind Powder found in Jayce’s apartment), but because Viktor has already merged Shimmer and Hextech, I believe whatever he’s created (that new kind of blood cell shown in ep7 I think) will allow him to survive the blast.

I believe Jayce is the only other Champion/playable character in the Council (I don’t think Mel is a LoL character) so I believe Viktor will also save Jayce as well. But Cait’s mom (Cassandra?), all those other council members and possibly, even Mel, will all die. I can see Mel going either way. One, she dies and Mel’s mom starts a war with Piltover. Two, Mel lives (is injured) and finishes her arc with her mother (the people who killed Mel’s brother still want vengeance).

But yeah, I just thought showing Shimmer-Deckard surviving the monkeybomb kind of foreshadows Viktor surviving Jinx’s rocket since Viktor’s also technically Shimmer-injected/fused as well.
