Yuri was 18.

She sat at her desk, losing herself to the same storyline she had the day before, and the one before that, and the one before that. Her favorite novel, capturing her fully.

Around the room, she could hear Natsuki softly flipping a page of her own book - if it could even be called such, but Monika insisted that literature was literature nonetheless - from in the storage closet.

She could hear the sound of pen against paper, presumably Sayori, frantically finishing a poem in hopes of getting it done before Monika calls time to share them aloud.

She could hear papers shuffling in the front of the room, and she instantly recognized the sound as Monika getting ahead of her classes or working on club paperwork-

"-ve?"

Someone spoke.

Yuri looked up and around the room, but... nobody had been looking at her back. Maybe she was too lost in her novel t-

"-ling?"

And she shook. Not on her own accord, but like some kind of outer force was shaking her from above.

"Wha-"

The word fell through her ears, in her own voice, but not from her mouth. Suddenly the room went dark, fading into nothingness, only to change again into a bedroom of sorts, vision filled with a silhouette of a girl with her hair in a long ponytail looking down at Yuri's resting place on the couch.

"Oh, thank God, you're up. Yuri, I need to tell you something. Like... now."

Yuri wasn't 18 and in the Literature Club.

Yuri was going on 27, in her home that she shared with her beloved girlfriends. One who had just recently graduated college a few years prior - she was very proud of her for that - but that didn't explain...

Why was she being woken up like the house was on fire?

Yuri sat up groggily, rubbing her eyes and glancing over at the clock. 4 p.m. She had slept in more than she meant to.

"Is- Is everything okay-?"

Monika, the very moment that her girlfriend sat up, breathed a sigh of relief before speaking again, still just as frantic.

"Yuri, I think I want a kid. I-"

...what?

"I have a legacy to uphold, and. I don't know, it just occurred to me that we've never talked about it, and I'd really want to have the experience of being a parent, even if it's just once-"

As Monika rambled and got her thoughts out, Yuri's mind struggled to comprehend why this was suddenly coming up. Why did Monika come to her instead of their other girlfr-

Oh.

Oh, she-

Yuri was suddenly much more awake than she was earlier, mind going a mile a minute.

"M- Monika, I don't-"

"It doesn't have to be right now! I just really wanted to tell you that it's been on my mind!"

Meanwhile, despite her seemingly calm demeanor...

'Shit, she wants a kid?! Can I even do that anymore?! I didn't even think about this being a possibility that she'd want! Should I have frozen cells or something before taking hormones?!'

"N-? Monika, I don't think I can- I love that you'd want to have a child with me, but I don't know if I can still-"

"...don't know if you can still...?"

"Taking hormones- I don't know if there's any, um..."

God, this was not going how she wanted it to. She mumbled a faint "Oh my lord-" then took a breath, collecting her thoughts. From the top.

"...Monika, dearest. I don't know if I'm still capable of conceiving a child due to taking hormones. It's been years, after all, and-"

...Why was Monika looking at her like that?

"Is... is everything okay-? I'm sorry if this is disappointing-"

"Yuri, no! I wasn't even thinking in that way! I want to adopt a kid!"

"...really?"

"Yes!"

Monika laughed, one of Yuri's favorite sounds the girl could make, and she found herself giggling at the absurd miscommunication.

"Oh, my god, that makes so much more sense now- I'm so sorry for jumping to a conclusion."

"It's okay! Can I tell this story to Sayori and Natsuki?"

While she found it slightly embarrassing, these were her girlfriends, so...

"...I suppose they'd get a laugh out of it, wouldn't they?"

The four of them talked. Were they ready for parenting? Sure, they were long out of school, but... a child is still a large leap. If they did adopt, how would it work? Eventually, they decided to leave it be for a bit - thankfully so, as Yuri was still slightly taken aback by her own misinterpretation of the initial conversation - but not without a last remark from Natsuki.

"Monika wanting a kid. Who would have known?"
