Awwww - love this! ALL the fanfic AUs are real, and the Morse canon is the AU. How fabulous 😍
I’m so glad that Inspector Morse is just an AU and in the real timeline Morse and Joan get married and raise their three children in the Thursday family home where Fred and Win are doting grandparents, and great-grandparents too. Isn’t that a great thing that’s definitely true

Trove
I made a LOT of scribbled notes as I watched this one!
*It opens with CLICKY PEN!!
Favourite lines
Morse: "Nothing suspicious?" Max: "Only you."
Max:"I'm a pathologist, not a road sweeper"
Bright: "This... girl competition, or whatever it is"
Morse: "Venerable the Bede may have been but not clairvoyant"
Max: "He had a fractured everything"
Morse: "A man can't serve two masters. Sooner or later you'll have to choose."
Thursday: "Go home" Morse: *does not go home*
Morse: "I suspect the truth is I was myself all too much"
Morse: "Everyone's someone."
Morse: "A bunch of overgrown schoolboys playing with the dressing-up box?"
Music
I am, as @itsa-me-cavaradossi knows, NOT good at recognising the opera tunes in these episodes, let alone their relevance to the scenes, but I DID RECOGNISE BRINDISI FROM LA TRAVIATA so I'm pretty proud of myself. (Just don't ask me how it's relevant. I know it's a drinking song, that's all I know. ALL I KNOW.)
Word I Didn't Know and Had to Look Up:
"Murophobic" means afraid of mice and rats.
"Salmagundi" is a cold dish or salad made from different ingredients which may include meat, seafood, eggs, cooked and raw vegetables, fruits, or pickles. (I wrote it down and now I don't remember how in the world this word was even used in the episode or who said it)
Monica
MONICAAAAAAAAAHHHH *incoherent morsica noises*
Morse
The PTSD in this episode is soooo OUCH. (Also catnip for Eva.) The backfiring car and just how OUT OF IT he is several times.
Copley-Barnes
Yuck. I had to google to make sure I was remembering right about this dude showing up in OG Morse (I was) and that it was the guy I thought it was (also it was) and that his daughter Imogen was the "Im" turning cartwheels in the garden in this episode and HOO BOY DOES THAT GIVE ME THE ICKS.
Question
What does Bright mean when he says "I ask with no side"?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now for spoilers:
Sex with daughters is the sick theme here, it seems. I wonder if they did that parallel with Infernal Serpent on purpose.
Oh, and I know the glasses off before suicide was also a nod to OG Morse, but I can't remember which episode. I wanna say it was the creepy church episode in season 1, but don't quote me on that. As much as I roll my eyes at much of OG Morse, I *love* the easter eggs and connections and I'm glad that I've seen it so I can at least have that background.

A Bit on Music in Endeavour
A favorite musical moment in Endeavour is at around 04min45s in Scherzo (S8E2) where you hear Wagner’s Prelude to Act III of Tristan und Isolde. Morse has it going on his record player while he dresses for work. We’ve just come off of the first episode of S8 and we’ve seen the degree to which he is starting to fall apart. He’s a mess really. Perfect time for some Wagner.
If you don’t know about Wagner, he was a horrible human being, but an innovative composer. Tristan und Isolde, in particular, is considered a real turning point in composition because of its very intentional use of dissonance. It’s so significant, in fact, that the very first chord you hear in this piece is actually referred to as the “Tristan chord”—one of only about a dozen or so “named” chords in the western musical canon.
The chord just…aches. There’s a really intense urge to hear it move on to its harmonic resolution. You want it to get better!
And this particular prelude is at the beginning of Act III, so if you know the opera, you start to picture it in your mind…
…As Act III opens, Tristan is lies mortally wounded. His faithful servant waits for the arrival of Isolde, the only one who has the power to heal Tristan. A shepherd lad has been instructed to signal the servant by playing a tune on his pipes when the ship carrying Isolde is sighted. They wait, listening. Surely help will arrive in time to save the dying man…
Nope. It’s Gwen.
Another favorite is in Neverland at about 15min. Monica and Morse are in a cozy, domestic scene. He’s doing the crossword. She’s darning a sock. She asks if he’s happy and somewhere along the line you realize that they’re listening to the beginning of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (basically a musical retelling of the crucifixion). By the first time I saw that episode, I’d learned enough about how they used music in the series to guess that things were about to go very, very wrong. There actually was going to be a crucifixion of sorts.
There are so many instances where they use music (both classical—and if you you are lucky enough to be watching the UK versions—popular as well) to either foreshadow or pull a bait-and-switch or to reference another work or otherwise give a scene additional layers of meaning.
It’s just beautifully done—but it’s also done gently. It’s done in such a way that those not “in the know” aren’t left on the outside. There’s nothing crucial that you’re going to miss out on, but at the same time it’s great fun when you see it.

I have no idea if this is going to go anywhere, but it felt good to write it down. With thanks to @sandfordsmostwanted for being the best writing partner I could wish to develop this AU with.
The church is filled with flowers.
Dev sees them through red rimmed eyes, his fingers shivering in Monica’s as he listens to the minister saying the final blessing. The children are quiet, hushed with the solemnity of the moment, even Peter Rabbit not fussing as he turns wide, dark eyes to try and take the church with its stained glass, its flowers and plaques to the great and the good, in.
On his other side, Lucy’s hand squeezes his own, her eyes fixed on the coffin.
‘Ma?’
Her soft, grey-blue eyes turn to him, gentle amongst the folds of her wrinkles and he remembers when he had first truly seen her. Remembers the bedroom back at 40 Westgate, swimming in and out of a haze of fever and pain to see gentle eyes watching him beside the bed.
Remembers Frank sitting with him, guiding him through the first few lessons that he’d felt up to taking, sat at the kitchen table, worrying his pencil between his teeth as he poured over his Latin Grammar.
The church is filled with flowers. Full of Monica’s hand squeezing his own, a soft, sad smile playing at the corners of her lips. In the quiet, he believes that he can see a boy with a tousled mop of cornsilk coloured hair standing in the choir, his voice rising and falling like a lark weeping for home.
‘He was- He was so proud of you, my lark,’ Lucy murmurs, following his gaze. She reaches to cup his cheek, her fingers shivering slightly, and he swallows back a sob.
Remembers sitting with her and Monica, Tansy’s head on his lap after the undertakers had taken Frank away. Frank dressed in his dress blues, his wings pinned to his jacket lapel, looking for all the world like he would wake at any moment and-
‘We’ll take care of him, Mrs Bellamy. Mr Morse. Mrs Morse. Don’t you worry about a thing.’
That morning had been a long, hot stretch in the garden, sitting under a sky full of blustery clouds. They had been sitting under the Oak tree, Lucy’s hands resting on the little headstone memorialising Teddy, Kitty and George.  Joy had been curled up beside Lucy, Peter Rabbit on Lucy’s lap, Freddy on Monica’s. Joyce’s head had been resting on his shoulder, and he had felt all of eleven again, hoping that they wouldn’t be sent away.
The bedroom window had been open, and Dev remembers hoping, that a strain of a record would start playing, that his Da’s out of tune whistling would catch on that breeze, that-
Overhead, the white streak of an aeroplane had cut across the sky.
‘Where d’you think Grandda Frank is now, Granny Lucy?’
Joy’s eyes had been shining as Lucy had smiled a small, soft smile, her eyes skywards.
‘Flying, I expect. With his boys.’
She had turned to Dev then, her eyes shivering with tears as she had reached over to squeeze his hand.
‘But you were his favourite, my lark. Always.’
‘Never forget that, my dear, dear boy.’

It really gets to me that it only took one bit of kindness from Monica for Morse to break down and start weeping in Trove.

Time to hug two (2) "Endeavour" characters. :-)
Oh fellow Endeavour fans!
You have the opportunity to share a) some soup of your choice, and b) a hug, with both:-
E Morse
one other Endeavour character
For the purpose of this poll, please assume that both characters are entirely up for the hugging, and (given one of them is Morse...) can at least be gently persuaded into (and will be delighted by) the soup. :-)
(NB: you can use whatever criteria you like. Please feel free to share your soup choice. :-) You can if you wish choose whether you're having the soup-and-hug time with Morse and the other person on separate occasions or whether it's the same event and you're hoping they'll hug each other too. ;-) )

An Endeavour prompt (for a reply or a memey post, or if you are really keen a fan creation of some sort!)
Endeavour characters D&D game. Bright is DMing. Who's playing as what, and how's it going? Who's playing to type, who's playing against type, who's written a massively angsty backstory for their character already? Precisely how evil and mischievous or sweet and encouraging is Bright being as DM? :-D
I'm going to assume the players are: Morse, all four Thursdays, Strange, Max, Dorothea, and any or all (your choice) out of Jakes, Monica, Trewlove, Fancy, and Box. :-)
(You can choose any D&D edition; my assumption is usually 5th even though that's obviously anachronistic.)
Go. :D
