The Bankhar dog (Buryat: хотошо, Mongolian: банхар, Russian: Бурят-монгольский волкодав), is a landrace livestock guarding dog. Originally bred by the Buryat people, their success contributed to their spread across Buryatia and Mongolia and into adjacent regions before they were nearly annihilated in the mid-20th Century.
While undoubtedly an ancient breed, genetic analysis indicates that the Bankhar dog is a basal breed and may be the progenitor of all livestock guardian dogs. Legend states that the breed appeared as a huge ferocious dog that accompanied a giant descending from the mountains and the descendants of this dog are the Bankhar dog.
During the Communist era of Mongolia, Bankhar dogs were let loose or exterminated to forcibly relocate nomadic groups into socialist-style settlements. Their pelts became fashionable for stylish Russian coats, and the largest dogs were killed to feed the growing dog coat industry. By the 1980s, the breed had almost disappeared. There has since been renewed interest to preserve the breed in Russia and Mongolia; however the breed is still endangered.
The Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project has been a great resource in making this post and I highly recommend checking them out.

I really love these dogys (Mongolian bankhar dogs) but I feel like you shouldn’t have one if you don’t live in Mongolia and herd livestock. maybe if you live on the Canadian prairies, and herd livestock

Pets, Pets, Pets!!
My headcanon of the pets the characters have:
Mongolia: horsies… or not, since they’re technically livestock. He has a LOT of horsies he lends to nomads and sometimes he will sell them too. Anyway, he has a bankhar (native Mongolian guard dog) — so bankhars don’t technically get super big but his is a Lorge puppy nearly as big as he is. His dog has also sired countless pups. He brings his dog all the time when he’s out in the steppe and would camp with him.
Cute!!!!
Kazakhstan: infinity cats aka 8 cats. Half were strays and half are adopted — one or two of them he adopted from Russia. They’re literally replacement kids for him; were he a human he would have 10 children. Proudly calls himself cat dad. He loves them so much he bought a big luxurious house just so that them fully indoor cats can have room to roam. They hog the bed often that Kaz would sleep on the rug.
Uzbekistan: two cats, who are also barn/outdoor cats. They often help hunt small animals that could potentially ruin his harvest since he gardens at home!!
Russia: ofc he has cats. He has had cats since he was born. Sometimes his cats would have kittens and he asks his neighbors if they would love to adopt cats from him.
Turkey: well, for him all the cats in Istanbul are his (literally he is right). So he doesn’t really have cats at home, but he lets his house open for cats to roam. Also buys a ton of best quality cat food every month.

Mongolia can't own a small dog. He possibly can't. He and his people always had "bankhar", that is a big dog that people don't really train or such and mongolians give any of their left over meals such as bones and fat to their dog. And we never allow dogs into the house and is expected to herd the sheep and such. Dogs were always raised like this since the old times by mongolians. To us even if they're called "Man's best friend" they're always like a bit lower rank than humans. So moral of the story, don't let Mongolia take care of your small dog by making it sleep outside and freeze it or giving too much fat and big bones that can make small dogs get poisoned and choke from small places of bones.
(please don't make this mistake cuz my grandpa almost killed my Yorkie by making her sleep outside.)

I can’t really be bothered to fill up the canvas so. Here’s all of my pinned post with Buck from 9-1-1 as a dog. He’s a golden retriever (for obvious reasons) Mongolian Bankhar dog (they’re LGDs, and Buck is generally protective of loved ones) mix.

Played around drawing some Bankhars —the famous Mongolian guard dogs— so I put them into scenes whenever I feel like they need some dogs in 'em.

The Shapeshifter
Part Two
I opened my eyes weakly to find myself in an unfamiliar room, surrounded by the people I had met during my escape attempt. There was a lot of hustle, so I decided to keep my head down. I was panicking a little, but I didn’t want to scare anyone else, so I kept still.
“Scarlet! Stay down!” Mary demanded, pointing at the dog on the counter accusingly.
“Sorry, Mom,” Scarlet whined, knowing that the human couldn’t understand her, but still apologizing anyways. I felt the other dog snuffle at my back rather suddenly, and I leapt up to my paws in defense before I could stop myself.
“Ah! You’re awake!?” Mary exclaimed from just outside the doorframe of the room I was in. My paws braced and my hair stood on end but she simply stopped and leaned down to pat my head. I felt my leg begin to shift back to my base form, but I couldn’t seem to stop it. Luckily, it wasn’t too distinct from my Siberian Husky form I had chosen… just a little…misshapen.
I switched my focus to Scarlet, who was staring at me with unsettlingly dominant amber eyes. Her fully deep red fur and German Shepherd-ish build revealed her to be an Australian Kelpie. Around her neck was a silver chain collar with no tag. Strange, I thought. Most pets have tags… right?
I twisted my neck to face the dog that had woken me, and actually took the chance to take in its features. It was a beautiful male Mongolian Bankhar with a tan patch on his chest and face. He had a hot pink spiked collar with a bone-shaped dog tag that read ‘Carnelian’.
“Look, I’m sorry I woke you up, but can you stop staring at me?” Carnelian growled suddenly.
“Huh? Oh.. er, sorry,” I submitted, wagging the tip of my tail with flattened ears.
“It’s fine!” He huffed, nipping my ear playfully. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound rude.”
“Hey! This dog’s still a stranger! Don’t go warming up to them so soon!” Scarlet snapped from beside Carnelian. I let out a weary growl, not wanting to put up a fight, but finding it hard with how high-and-mighty she acted. She glared back, but shook her pelt dismissively, leading her and Carnelian out of the room with a prance that looked rather stupid, to be fair.
Over the next few years, we all had warmed up to each other, all the way until we could sleep in the same room, which was a huge development by my standards.
Scarlet and Carnelian had been growing their relationship quite well, too! Scarlet was expecting pups soon and I couldn’t wait to meet them. I had also found a way to not stretch out my form too much, I could go into the bathroom whenever Mom was gone and shift back for a while. No one else knew about my shapeshifting powers, and I could keep them safe. Definitely a win-win.
One morning, however, mom had left for work with the door unlocked. Someone outside had noticed and snuck in while I was asleep. We were lucky that Carnelian had gotten hungry, because he alerted me to his aid and we fought her off ferociously. I subtly used my powers to grow larger, hoping that Carnelian wouldn’t notice, but the thief did, and she ran away upon realizing that the dog standing before her was two times her size.
“Wow! What got her tail in a twist?” Carnelian quipped, looking up at me. “Whoa, you look, like, ten times bigger!”
“Er- probably just the fact I’m higher up than you.” I said, shifting back as I hopped down.
“WHAT’S HAPPENED? ARE MY PUPS IN DANGER!?” Scarlet yowled, bursting into the room clumsily. “AH! T-THE DOOR!”
“Oh- I got it!” I woofed, closing and locking the door with my paws.
“Wow, where’d you learn that!?”
“Well, Mom does it every day,” I lied quickly. I was just relieved that no one had gotten hurt, and my shapeshifting was still a secret. We all plopped down on the couch exhaustedly, proud to be victorious, and dozed into a light slumber.
You’re a Shapeshifter who was wounded by a monster hunter, in a last ditch effort for survival you shifted into a normal household pet and were whisked away by a plain human unaware of the supernatural where you’ve lived for the past three years. You thought you were safe, but they’re back…

Aha!! I got it! I know the dogs for Rachel and Clarisse.
Rachel Elizabeth Dare = Old School St. Bernard
Has the ability to guide heroes to what they need to find (which is kinda like stating a prophecy). I write “old school” because the modern St Bernard is no longer used for Search and Rescue.
Clarisse La Rue = Bankhar Dog (aka Mongolian Mastiff)
Similar to Percy, she is friendly to family ONLY, except even more so. She is also used for war, but mellowed out and became a fierce protector of those she loves (also, making the two rivals Mastiff types just makes sense).
Bonus Round:
Stoll Brothers = Siberian Huskies
Do I… Do I even need to explain this one?
Percy Jackson Characters Explained by Dogs
So, after reading this post about how Percy Jackson is actually terrifying, but we (the readers) don't notice it as much because we're always on his side, I commented that certain dogs can explain it more visually. So, I decided to make it into a post (with images). Now, here we are, putting dog photos next to PJO-HoO characters. Here we go:
Percy Jackson = Caucasian Shepherd or Belgian Mallinois
He’s a sweetheart to family and FAMILY ONLY. To everyone else, he will label you as a threat until proven otherwise. (Also, I just realized Percy fits the Mastiff type dogs perfectly, which is what Mrs. O'Leary is).
2. Nico di Angelo = Dalmatian
He’s not seen as violent, but every now and again he will tear someone or something to shreds. Which, coming from a "harmless-looking" individual, makes him creepy. (Ironically, Nico went to Dalmatia in HoH).
3. Jason Grace = Rhodesian Ridgeback
He will stare down and hunt down lions, but is not known for violent outbursts. (I just realized it also fits his "raised by wolves" bit, since the RRs need good socialization to be stable).
4. Annabeth Chase = Border Collie/Dingo
She's highly intelligent, fierce, adaptable, and extremely intimidating when focused on a task (usually involving hunting of some kind). Also, the size difference between Percabeth is an added bonus. (Can you imagine the tiny Dingo with the giant CS curled around it?)
5. Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano = Greyhound
She's dominant, laser-focused, and will chase down her goal, no matter who or what stands in her way.
6. Leo Valdez = Basenji or Nureongi
He's slightly out of place (Basenjis don't bark, but yodel) with a very dark past (Nureongis are only bred for dog meat), but has the personality of a sweetheart with a hidden fire.
7. Hazel Levesque = American Foxhound
She's good around horses, and feels comfortable in both violence and family.
8. Frank Zhang = Dogo Argentino or Aksaray Malaklisi
He doesn’t seem intimidating at first glance, but a closer inspection reveals a strong ferocity that has killed many beasts (also, he's freaking huge).
9. Piper McLean = Calupoh
She's extremely beautiful, which allows her to get away with certain things that would otherwise turn some heads (reference to her charmspeak, as well as her desire for revenge).
10. Thalia Grace = Carolina Dog, Siberian Laika, Canaan Dog, Brazilian Caramel, or Indian Pariah
She's too wild to stay in one spot, but always close by whenever someone needs assistance.
So, yeah, that's what I got so far. I might make some more in the future, but we'll see.
PS: I changed the "were" to "are", since some companies in Korea still breed Nureongis for meat only.

So there is this idea. I wonder if I should go with it or not, but l have a hc of mythological backstory for Mongolia where he started off as a wolf or a wolf-dog so it would probably be fun to link this hc to the Mongols’ intimate relationship with their shepherd dogs?
Basically, from what I read that is, dogs fill a special place in the people’s heart and are named while horses, which Mongols also love, aren’t. Bankhars, a type of native Mongolian shepherd dog, are thought to be of the same spirit as humans and can be reborn as humans as well. When a Bankhar died, its owner would cut off its tail before burying it as a prayer that it would be reborn as a human.
So maybe that’s how Mongolia started. He was a guardian wolf-dog who died and then be reborn as an immortal nationperson. Just like how he protected his owners and their herds, he is now a loyal warrior who protects all his people.
