i talk a lot about how dave's relationship with his bro probably fucked him up in a lot of ways and rose probably did with dave too. but also what about the reversal afterwards when dave with his newly found awareness of Bad Parent Relationship Things points out weird ideas rose has developed because of her relationship with her mom that she doesn't realize are weird.

There's something about the Strider brothers which I noticed a while ago, but haven't had the opportunity to talk about. This is the perfect moment to discuss it, though, because it explains a lot about why Dave is the way he is.

So - let's talk about the Strife fights.

When John first attacked his father with a hammer, I decided to roll with the assumption that this fight was symbolic, rather than literal. John loves his dad, and it can be safely assumed that he doesn't want to kill the guy.

Instead, this scene serves as a stand in for the familial strife between father and son. John finds his father's parenting style to be mildly frustrating, and their interactions sometimes feel like a fight to him.

Likewise, Rose (probably) isn’t actually going for Mom with those needles. Instead, their fight represents Mom’s 'ironic' negligence, and the gifts that Rose refuses to believe are from the heart. The Lalonde relationship is clearly more fraught than the Egbert one, but I don't think Rose actually wants to skewer Ms Lalonde.

Jade doesn't really fight her Grandpa, but their Strife clearly demonstrated how deeply in-denial she is - not about his death, but about the fact that her life isn't normal. She's desperately trying to have the same childhood that John and Rose are describing, but she can't, because she doesn't have a parent to bicker with.

Now, I'm sure you've guessed where I'm going with this. What, exactly, did Dave's Strife scenes represent?

Well...

...first of all, it's worth noting that Dave is the only Player to explicitly describe the events of his Strife to a third party. We've never heard John reminiscing about bludgeoning Dad, but Dave's constantly complaining about getting beaten up by puppets.

And - rather more worryingly - Dave is the only Player to retain his Strife injuries, even after this ostensibly 'metaphorical' fight is over.

In fact, one of those Strife injuries still marks him to this day.

The point I am obviously dancing around is that I don't think Dave's Strife was a metaphor at all. Unlike his friends, there's no pretense to these fights. They're literal. Dave's brother routinely attacked him.

Odds are, this was Bro's way of 'preparing' Dave for the game he surely knew was coming - but you don't need me to tell you that he took it way too far. The guy might have been Dave's assigned Guardian, but he really shouldn't have been raising anyone.

what are your thoughts on why a lot of trans fans refuse to portray Roxy as transmasculine when he is in canon? i've noticed a lot of people who correctly gender June and point out her transfem centered symbolism and arc in the later bits of HS/epilogues, will still ignore that part of Roxys arc in the same text and even argue against acknowledging it, like i've made a couple of meta posts about Roxys relationship with Calliope in the epilogues and gotten the replies full of hs2 fans making fun of using he/him for him and outright saying things like "Roxys a girl, don't be a freak." when like that's not even what the posts about i am just talking about his relationships while using the pronouns the text is using for him! like obviously this isn't a transphobia thing, again, it's generally fans that aren't transphobic and actively acknowledge June, and frankly i doubt a transmasc character would be the rhetorical target of transphobes for homestuck specifically, its a transfeminine work by a transfeminine author and that would be the angle of attack there. it seems to be something about Roxy and his arc specifically, something that's really confusing or upsetting to a large portion of the fandom, that doesn't have to do with him being trans but means its difficult to see him as a nonwoman anyway. but i can't put my finger on it--i am wondering if it has something to do with Mom and her place in the story, especially Rose's relationship to her?

it's because before The Homestuck Epilogues, transfem Roxy Lalonde was a very common reading of the character. i would say that back in the day even the majority of cis fans had heard/enjoyed this reading, but it was especially ubiquitous in the transfem portion of the fanbase (who are/were a huge huge slice of the fandom) and there's a lot of evidence that she was written/coded as a trans woman in Homestuck 1 -- she's a hacker/gamer girl with a rifle, has themes of motherhood through unconventional & untraditional means, her introduction page even calls the last two letters of her name "chromosomic" when her name is revealed; there's the whole relationship to Callie (who absolutely 100% was supposed to be transfem in HS1) etc etc. so it's a totally supported and hard to deny reading.

a lot of longtime homestuck fans, especially HS1 fans, were quite taken aback by such a high presence of character moments & motivations in post-canon that are very contrary or even totally opposite to how the fandom interpreted them previously -- see Jane, Jade, Dirk, etc. now in some ways i think The Homestuck Epilogues (and HS2/HSBC) are intentionally choosing to tell stories that are very very different to what the fandom anticipated to the degree that it might even be considered anti-fan -- i think THE/HS2 is very much engaging with what it "means" for something to be anti-fan, and whether or not a story should just be whatever the fans demand (spoiler: it shouldn't), so i think to a lot of people transmasc Roxy didn't come off as an interesting progression of the character, but an intentional spit in the face of all those transfem fans who had been talking about how she was transfem for years. for what it's worth i completely disagree with this take (i think i heard somewhere that transmasc Roxy happened because a member of the team was a fan of the headcanon, which makes sense) but i'm not also surprised that some of the transfem fans felt this way. tbh i have mixed feelings on it -- i really like some of the stuff they've done with him, but i think a lot of the other stuff has not really approached a Homestuck trans-coming-out-story in a super interesting way.

i think, similarly, a lot of these transfem fans are upset that the (100% intentional, 100% canon) transfem-coding of June has been ignored by the majority of the TME fandom (many of whom elect to portray John as transmasc) so i can't say i don't understand why they feel justified in doing the exact same thing back to Roxy -- transfem June had been planned for longer than transmasc Roxy, and there's a lot of evidence to suggest that Andrew saw Roxy as transfem in HS1 to begin with. i'm very sympathetic to transfem fans who felt hurt that the one universally-agreed-upon transfem headcanon was snatched away from them & given to the same transmascs who deny June is supposed to be trans, but i also feel happy for all the transmasc Homestuck fans who got to see themselves in their favourite character. i really like Meat Roxy and i'm excited to see what they'll do with him. i especially like how his pronouns changed over time, getting his style tips from Dave, and still using the same name & letting Dave call him mom. this all feels really authentic, i just wish they would do anything more interesting than like... baby's first fandom transmasc reading. it feels like after Roxy's gender journey, his entire character halted imo.

also i love what they do with Roxy in Candy; i think it's really clever and one of the only parts of transmasc Roxy that is fully really utilising the medium to tell interesting & fresh stories about gender & transition.

dave in the comic goes out of his way to make the people he cares comfortable, but if something like that gets taken advantage of too many times, a person'll def get colder. i dont think her selflessness would go away completely, it's still there but she'd be way more reluctant/less trusting to actually bring it out.

she'd probably be in online (ton of blogs) a lotttt to make up for her loneliness and has a ton of "friends" she keeps at arm's length, rose teases her asking if they know if she's a total bitch and they go back and forth.

Do you believe it was a boon or a detriment (to Homestuck) that none of the kids ever got to reconcile with their parents/guardians?

Across all of them, none of them really got to understand their parents as living, breathing people- at least that's how I see it. To all of these characters, their guardians were faceless, eccentric, incomprehensible elder beings that may or may not have cared about them; guardians forever locked in the past- mere memories left only to fade. Like sure, the beta kids sort-of got peace of mind with the alpha kids (and vice versa), but it's obvious that the alpha kids have little to do with the beta kid's actual parents (and vice versa), so to watch them "talk it out" is like pondering the beliefs of Elvis Presley with an impersonator.

I believe that this leaves Homestuck thematically as a one-trick pony; if you're looking for a story about losing a parent at a young age, you've come to the right place, but if you wanted to see any other parent-child relationships, go look elsewhere. It leaves me wanting more, wondering what could have been- and I recognize that this feeling is probably what Andrew Hussie intended- but a reader can dream, can they not?

One of the highlights of (me) growing up was learning more about my parents and watching them become more human-like and understandable- learning that even parents can grow and change, discovering their passions and dreams and seeing them consider their flaws and failures, changing what it means to grow old- it's great to see this amount depth and self-reflection coming from someone who loves and raised you, but it also makes me wonder if most parents are just asshole morons and I just got lucky.

On the "upside", I guess if the parents were around none of that spicy teenage romance could happen, am I right? You can't have your dirkjakes or rosemarys if their parents are still there telling them to focus on setting a career path or getting a driver's license, LMAO. Shut up old-timers, these teenagers can't get laid with all of your parental advice killings the vibes! Joking of course, I'm not THAT bitter about what never was. I'm only slightly bitter.

It definitely is a detriment that the Beta Kids never really got full closure on the Guardians that had raised them. In Rose's case, she finally realized and understood that her Mom genuinely loved her and everything she did was real. There was no ulterior motive. Her drunk arc was Rose's way of punishing herself, believing she was a bad daughter. That she blamed herself for not accepting all the love Mom Lalonde had to give before the game started. Sure Mom Lalonde was not any better as she too was drinking during the raise, but the woman still put time and effort to let Rose have her hobbies, interests, and tries to enjoy them with her while trying to hide her worries and sorrows that Sburb will happen. She couldn't explain to Rose about what Sburb was or what was going to happen. Rose wouldn't believe her Mom and she knows this. It's not really the same for Roxy entering it. It feels like a copout or worse, a REPLACEMENT, of Mom Lalonde. Sure they share similar traits, but she isn't exactly the person who raised her. The same can apply to Roxy's view on Rose as her own mom. She isn't exactly the same either. The only person who still got to keep her guardian safe was none other than Jane Crocker for her Dad Crocker. John hugging him is confusing since he isn't exactly like Dad Egbert. It baffles me people had accepted this or believe Dad Crocker and Dad Egbert were one in the same person, when they aren't.

The reason I believe it would have been better for the kids to meet with their guardians one last time, is to fully symbolize the growth of the kids as well as passing the baton onto the new generation. Growing up, maturing, and being a better person. That's what was suppose to be the theme of Homestuck and for heroes like the Beta Kids to reach by the end of the story. Without it, all the characters remained the same status quo and never fully changed.

She had her own discourse tag (Vriscourse) due to all the crimes she did. These include murder (of enemies, friends, and strangers), a revenge sprial that led to her paralyzing one friend and blinding another, and literal mind control. She was one of the protagonists. Also one of the biggest problems that needed solving. A deeply hurt and desperate teenager, she tricked a lot of her team and a lot of the fanbase into thinking she was a shallow violent "spider8itch." She earned every last bit of vitriol she got. She was a scared lonely teenage girl. Her best friend (the one she blinded) murdered her. It was declared both a just and heroic death. It had to be undone with time travel because it was impossible to suceed without her. She had so much love to give. She delivered needless pain instead. She was a result of her society and unbringing. Her friends were not nearly as brutal as her. She's like if Azula ATLA had a sense of humor and was allowed to say fuck.

Damara Megido:

Damara lives in a caste based society where blood colour is tied to lifespan. She is of the lowest colour and thus she’s already on the bottom of society. She speaks a language not widely understood by her acquaintances, except for her eventual boyfriend, Rufioh. Her boyfriend cheated on her, so she paralyzed him and he was turned into a head on a robot horse body by Horuss, the guy he was cheating on Damara with. He then feels awkward around Horuss. She was also bullied relentlessly throughout her youth by literal royalty. She killed her tormenting bully, Meenah, the lowest caste kills the highest caste. She becomes so estranged from her “friends” that it’s suggested she has entered into the service of the literal destroyer of the universe. At the same time, when interacting with “friends” she portrays herself in a very sexual, horny otaku fashion, and pretends not to understand people when they talk to her. Tragic girlboss to herself.

this is my... twelth or thirteenth submission? i think. and not going to lie its all blurring together for me but rose is my ultimate blorbo of all time. shes a lesbian nerd with a degree in wikipedia psychoanalysis she uses to call her friends gay. she ends up involved in the end of the world and makes a plan to destroy the main villain which involves her own death. she consorts with eldritch beings and succumbs to their grimdark influence. she is shtity to her friends and is very self important. she cares deeply for them. she is a flighty broad and she has a lot of snarky horseshit. said grimdark episode is after her mom dies. she gets stuck on a meteor for three years and ends up becoming a teenage alcoholic. she goes on her first date unsure its a date and totally wasted. she flies around blowing up the structures of innocent turtles and consorting with dark cosmic entities. she gets stabbed through the chest. she dies three times over the course of the comic. she even gets gay married. shes such a girlboss and look its homestuck of course shes problematic. ultimate blorbo ever. vote rose

Terezi Pyrope was submitted without propaganda, but I am familiar enough with Homestuck to attempt to write some myself. Here we go:

She dreams of becoming her alien society's equivalent to a prosecutor, whose job is basically just to murder criminals with little to no evidence. She gets involved in a huge revenge spiral between all her friends. She fucks over one of the main human characters and ends up creating one of the worst timelines because of it. Despite all that, she ends up working for good in the end, and helps that same main human character rewrite the entire history of three universes to create a more favorable result.
