Random Mally Headcannon No One Asked For:
Molly and Mal randomly switch bunks depending on the week.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "that's so random, why the junk would they do that?"
And yes, that's a good point, but hear me out.
In the first issue, when the Roanokes sneak back to their bunk, we can clearly see Molly trying to get to the top bunk, and her name labelled on that bed. There's also various covers and other issues, both in canon and in the short stories, where Molly is clearly on the top bunk and Mal on the bottom bunk.
HOWEVER, in Vol. 11, we can clearly see Mal being the one on the top bunk during the sequence where Molly sneaks out. Now, this might just be because they wanted the dramatic angle for that one panel in this issue, but surely there's an in universe explanation, right? It's not just inconsistency because they needed it for the shot right? Right?
Anyways, I think it started when they had like a long day or something and Molly was sitting on Mal's bunk watching her play cards with April and Ripley, but then she accidentally fell asleep and Mal didn't have the heart to move her, so she just went up into Molly's bunk and spent the night there. The next morning, she is thoroughly embarrassed and she keeps apologizing and Mal is like "no, it's fine" because she actually liked sleeping in Molly's bed, it's probably akin to stealing your girlfriend's hoodie or something, but she's not just gonna admit that so the next night she just goes up into Molly's bed on purpose just to prove that it was fine and she's not bothered by it, because obviously this was the only logical way to do that and it's definitely not just because she likes sleeping up there. So Molly just goes along with it after a bit (because she too liked sleeping in Mal's bunk but she's not gonna say that) and then they keep doing this for like a week, but then the girlfriend's hoodie thing starts to go away and it doesn't feel like the other girl anymore, so they switch back, and they just keep doing this for the rest of camp.
Meanwhile the rest of Roanoke watches on like "okay, sapphics be sapphicing I guess."

I have always loved Molly Knox Ostertag's work, in particular the really cute, heartwarming tact of the Witch Boy trilogy's trans allegory and the way it feels so well built to walk that fine line of appropriately nuanced but still perfectly digestible for its intended teen audience.
Well The Deep Dark is more of precisely that style of writing and it blows me away just as much now as Witch Boy did the first time I read it. It's exactly the kind of book I wish I'd had as a kid, and the sort of thing that lights a little hopeful flame in the jaded dark corners of my heart. It's the sort of thing that helps me feel optimistic about a generation of kids who will grow up with this kind of story as their formative personal mythos.
I know I don't usually do reviews or recommendation on this blog so I dunno who this is for really, and it certainly won't have any particular reach, but if you find yourself with the chance to, I really can't recommend The Deep Dark enough. And of course everything else Molly Knox Ostertag has had a hand in, even the one's she's not been the sole author on.

(None of these characters are canonically autistic, just coded. Before people yell at me in the notes.)

Diane: We need to stop the fandomification of Greek myth.
Molly: The fact I had someone say they didn’t believe me when I said that Apollo never assaulted Persephone in actual myth and they said “why would Lore Olympus lie or make up fake myths?”
Diane, fake crying: Why would Lore Olympus lie?!

📣 What to Read After Watching: Nimona 🎞️
🩷 I stumbled upon She-Ra and the Princesses of Power from creator, showrunner, and executive producer ND Stevenson in 2018 and never looked back. It was one of the few projects, let alone animations, I ever watched that so blatantly flipped the script by highlighting inclusivity without needing to say it outright. Queerness was simply a way of human existence; representation mattered but didn't need to be outrightly defined. Again, ND Stevenson has flipped the script, this time by bringing his webcomic from page to screen. The story became an outlet for Stevenson to express his own nonconforming gender identity. The shape-shifting title character, Nimona, is a stunning example of unapologetic transness and gender fluidity, again, without needing to say it outright. If you haven't watched it yet, Nimona is now available on Netflix, with the original comic available online and in stores.
🩷 If you HAVE seen it and adored Nimonia's punk-pop chaos, don't worry; there's plenty more where that came from! Here are a few options you should consider reading after watching Nimona!
🩷 The Girl From the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag 🩷 Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker 🩷 CosmoKnights by Hannah Templer 🩷 The Night Eaters by Marjorie Liu 🩷 Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Gus Allen, and ND Stevenson 🩷 Save Yourself! by Bones Leopard 🩷 Kim Reaper by Sarah Graley 🩷 Moonstruck by Grace Ellis and Shae Beagle 🩷 Snapdragon by Kat Leyh
