I am curious, was there any point in Perfect Slaughter where the story or characters developed in ways you hadn't planned?

Hey anon!! Thanks for this lovely ask, sorry for the wait 🩵 (holiday season, amirite?)

For most of my life I've been a 'pantser/discovery writer,' even if I've found a good balance now with both discovering and planning my stories--and one major way I still keep my options open for myself is the characterizations. So there were plenty of times all of the characters in Perfect Slaughter surprised me! But here are a few highlights:

Chatterteeth

Plot-wise, I included Chatterteeth in my outline as a heralder of the 'Command Undead' class feature Tyrus would level up and gain just before the climax; beyond that I didn't really know how much importance I wanted to give her. It wasn't until writing Part III that I thought more deeply about her motivations beyond simply wanting to end the Szarr legacy as well. A lot of it I didn't have the justification to dive into during the story itself (if you haven't read my little one-shot in her POV, I did get a chance then!), but it changed a lot.

For one--that she protests a lot more about Tyrus's controlling treatment of her. While this doesn't change the plot points, I think it did change the narrative and how readers experience Part III with Tyrus's corruption. A bit less cheering him on, and a few more reminders thanks to our skelly grandma that Tyrus is Not Being A Good Person.

Also, my plans had just been for Chatterteeth to be merely surprised at Tyrus's growing power during their trap-setting, then let him know about 'Command Undead' being a potential option. With how I began to write her, however, I realized it was a power she didn't know if she trusted him to disclose about even once she realized he might be capable. Which meant it gets revealed later than I planned, but in a way that hopefully emphasizes the gravity of Tyrus's choice at the end to only use it to give Astarion freedom, not take control of the final outcome. Adding how worried she is that he will choose control and power over love, hopefully raises the stake for the reader too. (Oh, and all this made her death quite a bit sadder 🥲)

Cazador

I unfortunately know Cazador's type all too well, and knowing what his thoughts and plans were behind the scenes was really important to make the set-up of this story work (i.e., use love against people until whoops, turns out it isn't a weakness like you thought). That being said, he gave me a big surprise in Part III when he bargains with Tyrus to keep Astarion around. I think it was right after the rune carving and sexual assault scene in ch32, that it suddenly came to me that he might want Astarion for his own selfish sake. And though it is a divergence from canon-Cazador's sentiments at the end of bg3, I justified that Astarion is on better terms (sadly) with him to protect Tyrus. (Plus, maybe Cazador would have been able to use Dufay in canon since he's also gotten his hands dirty/bound himself to the sacrificial spawn 'by blood' in some sense, if not for Doofie killing himself of course.)

Astarion

Astarion is such a well-fleshed out character thanks to bg3, the amount of voice lines I've listened to (many of them over and over), my god!! While I tried to stay as close and true to his canon counterpart as possible, PS!Astarion grew to have a lot of quirks I can only count as headcanons: his relationship with simple pain being worse than other abuses, his knowledge of the true vampire traits from Cazador and resultant avoidance of using the term 'love/I love you' in fear of being weak. On that note, I didn't really know when he'd say the big ILY to Tyrus, just that it would be sometime at the very end of Part II. He really held out on me with that, not admitting until the very last chapter while half-delirious with pain 💀😂

Tyrus

Tyrus surprised me the least--I know this boy like the back of my hand. I will say, he did initiate sex a lot more often than I initially planned for 😂 I swear that's half the reason I had to keep adding chapters to Part III! It's true to life though that demisexuals often do feel sexual desire, it just takes longer and a very strong bond with the right partner 🩵

Oh man, I miss him--I still want to write a one-shot at least every month, so hopefully I can squeeze one in during the holidays!!

okay i swear to god im going to shut up after this but i just wanna say <3 something about willow’s main romance not just being a lesbian princess/knight pairing but SPECIFICALLY a masc4masc pairing is just <33 im so hearteyes especially bc so much lesbian rep is 2 feminine gender conforming girls. so having kit with her gayass boydyke haircut and jade “you know how i feel about dresses… and… wearing them” claymore is raising my standards so fucking high. i love how even without a romantic plot to hammer it in they would both read INARGUABLY as masc lesbians, both thru looks and thru personality. I will never get over this ever.

I'm getting back into reading, anime and ect so hopefully be back to that soon. But these are the three that came to mind.

Aladarius - Darius and Alador.

I will already forever be upset that we never got to explore the Coven Heads more, especially their past and especially Darius. Other than Raine, he's my favorite and Alador need someone that's not his ex wife. I think they compliment each other nicely and would have loved to see something more in the show beyond that tiny interaction and Darius blush. Also need Alador to call Darius out for talking shit about his abominations earlier in the series.

Harlivy - Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy

I can do an entire PowerPoint presentation in detail and extra slides on Harley. Mix Poison Ivy in and their own relationship, it'll never end. Harley's DC show is not helping because they are both great on their own and make the effort for their relationship.

Percabeth - Percy and Annabeth.

Rereading the series and getting into the next one just kinda rekindled my love for that ship.

Had dinner with my dad, siblings and nephew the other night and my nephew picked out the movie. I haven't actually watched it before. He really enjoys it so that's what we picked.

My cat, I think he's also autistic because neither of us can make eye contact.

As far as shows and movies: SpyXFamily season 2 and hopefully soon JJK season 2.

I believe I'm caught up on everything else I was watching or just don't have access to. Though after posting this will probably try and find something to watch till sleep time.

The Lost Hero by Rick Rioden

In Aug. of last year I gave myself a reading goal to reread the Percy Jackson series before the TV show released. I finished all five in little less than a year, after not reading in general for years, and now seeing how far I get before the show starts.

Nothing! Which is bad because I haven't really eaten today. Just some Mac& Cheese since last night.

Currently Craving:

Physical affection, always. Well most of the time.

Actually not really, it's just cold and I do have someone that I've been spending a lot of time with and talking to but he's sleeping (or at least should be!) and has to be up in about 3hrs for work. My cat just laid down with me so that makes up for it I guess.

Deep-Dive into Perfect Slaughter: The Moon

There are a lot of big themes in this trilogy of a fic that are loud and proud, like fate, hope, trust, pixie dust, and love.

But a couple of you requested a while back to know about some of the nods, references, and literary devices from the fic that maybe weren't so plain to the eye. I tried at first making a list--but the very first bullet got so long, I think I have to accept that most of these will need their own post 😂

So, without further ado, here's a little deep dive into one of the big motifs throughout Perfect Slaughter: the moon!

While this story has little to do with the gods--except maybe to show how often they don't show up for people in Faerun unless they need something--the moon throughout Tyrus's story represents many things outside of its connotations to Selûne. In ch1 we learn he comes from Reithwin, a town of people who all worship the moon goddess, so on a basic level the moon acts as a beacon home for him throughout the story, a reminder to the reader of his past even once he's forgotten--and a tiny bit of foreshadowing, that he will return to it one day.

On a deeper level, I'd say the moon is a representation of Cynda and Tyrus's bond with her, a comfort he turns to subconsciously throughout the story. For instance--in ch15, as I'm sure many of you recall, he prays to Selûne first, because "the moon was a celestial light that hadn’t shunned him since the Turning." While that does him little good, this small line was a subtle promise to Tyrus/the reader that Cynda would not shun him or love him less when she does eventually learn of his vampirism.

Tyrus also makes a promise while looking up at the moon that he would "free Astarion, no matter what" (ch11), a very important oath he holds onto for the rest of the story. And when he's about to face what he thinks is his death, "Tyrus swallowed hard, whispered the moon a short 'Goodbye,' and allowed Astarion to lead him back into the shadows" in ch35. On some subconscious level, saying a permanent goodbye to his sister and the chance of returning home as well.

(In that same scene: "they watched the moon set on the final night before the feast, Selune’s tears glinting off the early traces of dawn with an extra winking glow" -- Tyrus’s subconscious thinking that Cynda will truly have to mourn/cry for him now)

The moon's cycle was also used to indicate how much he remembers Cynda throughout the story. It's full and brilliant when he first crawls out of his grave as a newly born vampire in ch3, when his memories are still accessible. It's a "vivid crescent" after he's finally allowed outside in ch11, when he's mostly forgotten her. And it is a setting moon and has a "faded face" in ch35, when she's lost entirely to his conscious mind and he thinks he's about to die. But, like the celestial body itself, Cynda was never truly gone even when he couldn't see/remember her. In ch40, "a full moon rising from the east" as they enter the druid-harper camp foretells that the two siblings are about to reunite at last 🩵

Add on top of all that the fact she literally becomes a Selûnite cleric during this time apart . . . it's really not so subtle, when you think about it 😂

There is another much subtler moon motif, though! This was far less intentional on my part than everything above, but my mind was blown after I noted the parallels between Tyrus's character arc and this moon rabbit myth halfway through writing, and the amount of rabbits planned in my story multiplied...like rabbits! (More on animal metaphors in a future post maybe 😉)

With this idea of the selfless moon rabbit in mind, one can argue at its deepest level the moon metaphor in Perfect Slaughter isn't just about Tyrus's sister, but a reminder of his own kind, loving soul that is still in him despite all the pain and betrayal that has twisted him.

Getting even further into the weeds--if you subscribe to the "Astarion is a moon elf" headcanon, and remember how Tyrus's love for Astarion is highlighted in both Tystar moon scenes in part 3 (ch26 and 35 specifically), one could argue that Tyrus's heart is the moon, and so comes to represent his love for not only Cynda but Astarion as well, which is what saves all of them--a heart, the true place 'home' resides in 🥰
