THE WOLF'S SILVER EYEBROW
One day, he met a wolf on a mountain. Giving one of his eyelashes to the boy, the wolf said: "Sly monkeys, cunning foxes, mean pigs, and evil raccoons. The boy saw no real people in the world.
In the end, he decided to look for a place where real people lived.
Hae Won: "Did he find such a place?
Eun seob: No, he couldn't find one anywhere. He could not find any place where real people lived, so the boy eventually lived alone in loneliness and died.
Hae Won: I feel so sorry for him.
Eun seob: For who?
Hae Won: That boy with the wolf's silver eyelash. He must've been lonely. Terribly, and awfully lonely. How cold must that boy have been?
Eun seob: What can we do for that boy?
Hae Won: We should hug him. Hug him as hard as we can with all our might, so he could feel warm."

A dark attraction (pt 1)
Tumblr media
You tried reaching for the book, that was stacked high in the book store, you stood on your tip toes and that didn't help either. Then you felt a chest press up against your back and a hand reach for the book.
Man: Here you go, Miss.
Y/n: Oh...thank you. You replied, with a smile.
Nodding, he turned away to walk away, but you stopped him by grabbing onto his arm.
Y/n: Um...i know I just met you, and it might seem strange to ask but would you like to have coffee with me? I just moved here from America, and you just helped me so...i though it would be only a gesture of showing my gratitude.
Man: Ah...well, I think a coffee would be nice. I'm Seong Yun-o.
Y/n: I'm y/n l/n. Nice to meet you.
Smiling you purchased your book and walked to the nearest coffee show with Yun-o, smiling you didn't know what to do or what to talk about with the guy that you just met.
Yun-o: What made you move to Seoul?
Y/n: My job. They transfered me, to our company here in Seoul.
Yun-o: What is it you do for a living.
Y/n: I'm a fashion designer and a author. And you? You asked, taking a sip of your coffee.
Yun-o: I'm and Architectural designer.
Y/n Wow, that's fascinating. We are looking for someone to design a building for the new property we bought. C...could I have your number? Only if it's not to forward in me asking, it's strickly for business. You said, swallowing hard, and taking another sip of your coffee.
Yun-o: Hahaha, here. This is my business card, and this...is my phone number. I'd like to stay in contact, you seem like a nice person and what harm would it be to get to know more people in Seoul?
Y/n: I guess. Thanks. You smiled, as you bit your lip. I...i should go it's getting late, and I still need to unpack at my apartment.
Yun-o: Do you need a ride? Instead of calling a taxi.
Y/n: I...um...i don't think that'll be a bad thing.
Yun-o: Great. Let's go.
Driving you home, the drive was silent, slightly uncomfortable and yet at the same time felt normal to you. Once you reached the apartment, you saw walking to your side after you got out and smiled down at you.
Yun-o: I would really like to know you better, that's if you wouldn't care about that. He said taking your hand in his, rubbing your knuckles with his thumb.
Y/n: Would...would you like to...mmm, have dinner here tomorrow night? You asked, as you looked down at your hands.
Yun-o: I'd like that. He replied, letting go of your hand, as he walked backwards. See you, tomorrow night. He gave a beautiful alluring smile, and got in his car.
Once you entered the building, Yun-o pulled out his phone and opened his Somebody app. Scrolling through the girl that were interested in him. Smirking he found a girl, and started chatting to her and arranged to meet her tonight. Giving an evil smile, he drove off preparing things for tonight.
As he arrived at the hotel she was staying at, he knocked on the door and was welcomed by the oyung women.
Baya: Hi, please come inside. She Siad, as she moved aside for him to enter.
Yun-o: Why did you want to meet at a hotel, instead of your home?
Baya: My roommate is there, she's only leaving for England the end of the week and since it's Monday I thought it'll be more private.
Yun-o: Does anyone know your here?
Baya: No. And I even booked this room, under a false name and payed cash. It makes this more interesting, don't you think? She asked Yun-o, as she took of his shirt. Meeting in secret, like to people who are forbidden to see one another. Baya said, as she licked his neck.
Yun-o sat on the couch as Baya took off her clothes, nothing but her underwear consealing her. Yun-o smirked as she took off his pants and shirt throwing it to the side. Kissing his chest Baya straddled his lap and started grinding against him, as she moaned hin his neck as she was sucking on his skin.
Yun-o kissed Baya, on the chest as his hands traveled under her bra pushing it off her and sucking on the soft flesh of her collerbone. Moaning in pure ecstasy, Baya grinded harder on Yun-o making him groan in delight. Lifting her from him, he placed her on the couch and revomed both their underwear and started to have sex with her. Baya, pulled him close as she held tightly onto his strong broad shoulders and yelled as they finished.
Looking up at him, she smiled, at Yun-o. Yun-o gave her a psychotic smile and started to hold her mouth and nose shut. Once she was dead, he carried her to the bathroom and placed her down in water as he injected her arm with drugs making it look like an overdose. After getting dressed, he smoothly walked out of the hotel and didn't get noticed at all, when he entered his car he got a ping from his phone and saw you sent him a message. Smirking, he opened up the message, and read it.
*Message*
Y/n:Hi Yun-o, I wanted to know what would you like to eat for dinner out of three options. 1- sweet and sour pork, with fried rice, kimchi and stir fry, 2- hotpot with all the trimmings or 3- takeout?
Yun-o: I'd enjoy anything. But if I'd be honest, I'd love option 1.
Y/n: Option 1 it is😊.
Yun-o: Counting down the minutes and hours, I'm so exited to have dinner with you🌸.
Y/n: Bye, see you then.
Yun-o: Bye.
*End of chat*
Time skip to next day
You sat across from Yun-o, watching as he ate his food that you made. His eyes closed, as he swallowed the food, smiling at you as he looked your way.
Yun-o: This is delicious. You should've been a chef. He laughed, as you shrugged.
Y/n: I did study to be a chef too. But I'm just helping my friend for now. I guess later I'll move out of the fashion industry, and open my own restaurant.
Yun-o: I'd definitely come eat there all the time.
Y/n: Really? You asked, raising your brow.
Yun-o: Yes. He said, as he stood up waling over to you. He turned your chair, and licked your lips.
You opened your mouth in response to his action, and felt his warm tongue gliding into your mouth. His tongue swirled around your mouth, as he drop to his knees and felt him push your legs apart. Pulling his tongue out of your mouth, he swallowed and smiled.
Yun-o: You tast delicious. He said, as he rubbed his thumb over your lips.
You didn't say anything as you felt his hand moving to your skirt. Pulling it off as you lifted yourself slightly off the chair. You felt his lips connect to your ankles, moving his way up your legs. Your breath hitched in your throat, but as soon as he got closer to your private area, you pulled his head up.
Y/n: STOP. You said fast, as you pulled his face up. We...we only just met yesterday.
Yun-o: That doesn't matter. He said, kissing your knee when you stopped him again.
Y/n: I...i don't...Yun-o, I really like you.
Yun-o: I like you too. He said, rubbing his hands on your legs making you shiver.
Y/n: T...that's...mmm-No. You held onto his hand, and looked into his eyes. I like you since I met you, I felt connected to you in a way that I've never felt before with anyone. I felt that I could...i could feel safe with you around. You said, as he smirked.
Yun-o: Really? If you feel that way, why won't you allow me to carry on?
Y/n: I...i don't know. I just, haven't been with a man since my divorce.
Yun-o: You were married? He asked, as you placed your hands on his shoulders. What happened.
Y/n: I...i caught him cheating on me. We were only married two weeks.
Yun-o: How did you find out?
Y/n: Our honeymoon. You said, looking at him.
You both started laughing, as you said that. Shaking your head you placed your hand on his cheek, stroking it softly.
Y/n: I guess I'm just...scared of getting hurt again. So, that's why I can't do this. I'm sorry.
Yun-o: What gives you the idea, that I'll hurt you? You can trust me. He said, as he kissed your foread, right eye, nose, cheek and lips.
Yun-o softly kissed you as he moved forward slightly, as his hand held onto your neck you could feel the strong hold he had on your neck which made it feel safe. You placed your hands on his shoulders as you reciprocated the kiss, this felt different, this felt like it was right. Throwing your arms around his shoulders, you felt Yun-o pick you up carrying you to bedroom. Breathing in, you watched as he took off his shirt, and pants leaving him in only his black fit underwear. Sitting up, you took off your shirt looking eyes with his as he hovered over you connecting your lips. Yun-o hand traveled up your stomach to your chest, as he messaged it causing you to moan.
Y/n: Yun-o-
Yun-o: Mmm. He hummed, as he started sucking on your neck.
Y/n: I...ugh... You cut yourself off as you turned your head lightly and sucked on his neck causing him to groan.
Yun-o pulled back and stood up taking off his underwear and yours. Now you were both completely naked, Yun-o slowly put on his condom and pushed himself in as he kept eye contact. You nodded your head, telling him you were ready which he instantly took as a go.
He started off with slow, steady movements and caressed your skin as he pushed into you. Yun-o, flipped you over making you stradle him and bounce ontop of him. He smirked up at you as he saw the sweat forming on your face, and how your face would change out of pure pleasure. Sitting up, Yun-o held onto you and moved to the edge of the bed with you still on his lap. He pulled you by the waist whispering in your ear, that he wanted you to bounce faster on him. Doing so, you ft strange since you hadn't had sex like this before, or even had sex after your diver two years ago...this felt amazing it felt different and normal to you. It felt as though it was an experiment that you wanted to try, yet something that's so natural to many people. As you thought about these things, Yun-o placed his mouth on your nipple and started sucking it causing you to feel even hotter than before, he licked his way up and sucked on your collerbone as he reached your mouth he connected you both with a kiss.
You started moaning in the kiss, breathing heavily as his tongue fought with yours for dominance. Holding him closer, you both bounced faster, and harder into each other making your curl your arms around him and his run your hands in his hair.
Y/n: Yun-o....agh...ahh...y...yes...ah
Yun-o: Mm...ah...ugh...just like that. F...faster.
After a few more second you both came, and you collapsed against his chest. Breathing heavily Yun-o could feel your chest rise and fall against his, lifting you off him he took off the condom and threw it in the bin. Walking over to you he got into your bed laying next yto you. You both were facing each other and he pulled you closer, as he kissed you forehead, you laid your head between his chest and neck.
Y/n: This feels nice. You whispered at the warm feeling of his body holding yours.
You fell asleep after saying that, and Yun-o looked down at you and thought to himself. There was no way he could kill you. There was something about you that was different than the others, you were hurt too, you've been cheated on, had to change your whole life and you were to afraid to even do this until he convinced you otherwise. He felt sincerety towards you, he was completely drawn to you. He wanted to protect you, and not kill you, he wanted to learn how to cook with you and have sex with you all over your apartment and more.
Could be that one person that he felt worth living?

Decision to Leave (2022, dir. Park Chan-wook) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Decision to Leave is a tense noir-ish thriller with a ton of style and great performances. The newest from Oldboy director Park Chan-wook, the film is a subdued effort from the filmmaker, who is normally noted for the striking brutal violence in his films like the Vengeance series and Oldboy. While the difference in tone and intensity is noticeably different, the visual style of the film is still unmistakably his, and it's great. The cinematography of this film is gorgeous, and one of the biggest triumphs the movie has is the lighting. All of the decisions regarding the way things were lit and framed in this film feel very intentional and like it was done with purpose. It's a truly beautiful film and everything on the technical and visually artistic level is near perfection.
On the flip side, while the story is also very good, it feels like it can't quite keep up with that stellar style. There are a good handful of scenes that definitely feel like they are done with a style-over-substance mindset, and while there's nothing inherently wrong with that, it can be done to great effect, here I found it more distracting than anything. The story of a respected, hard-boiled detective that gets too emotionally invested in the personal life of a suspect in a murder case (the victim's widow, at that), this movie screams film-noir from a plot perspective, equal parts Maltese Falcon and Casablanca. It plays out with plenty of twists and reveals that are all very gripping, and the film manages to keep the audience's attention through most of its runtime. I can't really say the film dragged or rushed itself at all, but there was something about the way it all plays out and that semi-frequent sacrifice of style over substance that kept this from being truly great for me. In the spirit of full transparency, I did see this on a day where I was particularly physically and mentally fried, and I don't think I really gave this film the full breadth of my attention and mental focus, so maybe upon a re-watch (which I do plan on doing at some point) I will change my tune, but for now, I will give it this score, which is still pretty great, if you ask me.
Score: 8/10
Currently streaming on MUBI.
I really do hate when I feel like I haven't given a movie everything I've got prior to writing its review, and I thought about not even putting this up right now until I did have that chance to re-watch. So, with that in mind, I might make an amended review once that happens.

Reactions to Crazier Bastard's Chapter 305
Brief summary: 5 people from CP came. HD meets his disciples, Clopeh and Hannah. HD wants to spar with CH.
==========
The first batch of CP people came, and they were:
Heavenly Demon - leader of the Demon Cult
Fist King Mok Hyeon - representing the imperial family
Jegal Mi Ryeo - female general commander of the Murim Alliance's military force; Caleism believer (?)
Tang Yu - Poison Queen; 50 y/o matriarch of the Tang Clan of Sichuan
Sima Jung - Trash of the Evil Alliance; son of Sima Pyeong, the Evil Alliance leader; Toonka's friend
All of them were surprised to see Cale's true appearance. Sima Jung immediately searching for Toonka was cute though. 😂 There was a funny scene between him and Raon:
Sima Jung: I greet the great elder. Sheritt: ??? eyes shaking Sima Jung: My father told me to always ask the great elder how he is, and to treat him with courtesy. Raon: tilts head ??? Sima Jung-ya! Why am your great elder? I'm only 7 years old! Sima Jung: No. He is my father's teacher, so I should call him with a great title, but please understand that I have not forgotten the lessons of the great elder, so I can only call him this. Raon: Hmm. I don't mind! Sima Jung: That's what I want to do. Great elder. Raon: Then do so! Cale: confused Fist King: Before we came here, he was beaten up by Sima Pyeong for three days and nights. Cale: Aha. immediately understands
Sima Pyeong is a great dad... 😂😂😂 Now if only Deruth had disciplined trash Cale... but I guess everyone secretly knew that og!Cale was just acting trash? Anyway, Sheritt's reaction to her son being called great elder was so funny. 🤣🤣🤣
If I recall, Jegal Mi Ryeo was somehow converted (?) to Caleism in the CP arc by the end, so I'm now excited to hear Kim Hae-il's current reputation in CP. Did Cale get more murim titles? 😂
What happened to Tang Yu was sad. The Dragon Lord of Aipotu destroyed her hometown of Sichuan, and half of her clan died during that time. Fortunately, the kittens were interested in her. Tang Yu and Hong recognized each other's poison, and On (and Ron) seemed to be interested in her assassin-like skills.
While the four were led to their rooms by Ron, Cale personally guided HD to HD's assigned room in the Black Castle. Why? Because Cale wanted HD to meet his "disciples", the people who inherited his power.
Hannah was acting awkward, but grateful to HD. But she was shocked when HD said she swung her sword ignorantly. She thought he was calling her ignorant, but HD was actually complimenting her. He said that it was just her style, and did not mean she herself was ignorant.
However, HD said that CH would be a better teacher to her. He described HD as someone who pretended to be gentle but was clever, and pretended to be ignorant but was troubled a lot. If you think about it, Hannah and CH are similar. Well, except the gentle part? Did Hannah ever pretend to be gentle in the past? Ah, that's right. She was gentle when in her holy maiden days.
Clopeh though... 😂😂😂 HD correctly figured out that he was a snake bastard, and both Cale and Raon were impressed. 😂HD described Clopeh's sword to be like an imoogi, and that Clopeh had the potential to surpass CH. Clopeh kept smiling all the time, and CH just shrugged.
The author showed her bias towards Clopeh again. Like, is there a need to mention his white hair and green eyes every time he appears in a chapter? Or be constantly reminded that he had a noble or holy appearance and smile? 🤣🤣🤣
HD was such a Male Lead-like character, and I think a lot of people agree, perhaps even the author herself. He even dropped the famous "How interesting" line (to his disciples). And then being revealed to be the most powerful person in Central Plains. I want to be excited with his upcoming spar with CH, but knowing the author, this would happen behind the scenes.
Ending Remarks I am so happy to see the CP people again, especially HD. 🥰 Next up would be Cale's talk with Exion regarding the Dragon Lord. Hopefully, this would be short as I would like to see Cale's interaction with the CP people again.

AL'S DRAMA RECS VOL.1: these recs will solely focus on the writing of the shows, which to me comes down to two things: how well does the plot accomplish what it set out to do in the beginning? and how compelling are the characters written, no matter if their character arc means they become better or worse through the story or even remain who they are? my favourite dramas usually succeed in giving us a satisfying answer to both questions and these are the ones you will see on this list!
★★★★★ dramas (aka the greatest hits):
SECRET FOREST / STRANGER (2017-2021): the pinnacle of all dramas. follows the duo of no-nonsense prosecutor hwang si-mok (the acting star turn of he century by cho seung-woo) and police detective han yeo-jin (the ever-exceptional bae doo-na) investigating a murder case that blows open several scandals in the prosecution. season 2 follows several cases leading to an internal investigation on police bribery. it just does not get better than this and i fear it won't ever will. this drama has the understated styling of nordic noir, the classic shenanigans of an unlikely leading kdrama duo, and one of the tightest scripts ever seen in any tv show ever. | genre: thriller, melodrama, crime procedural
MY LIBERATION NOTES (2022): following the yeom family's three siblings living in the small town of sanpo on the outskirts of seoul, and the stranger moving into the house next door to theirs, this story navigates questions of sibling-hood and family, the purpose of life, as well as the sacrifices we make for the relationships in our life as well as our own happiness. this show earned its hype from the central love story between mr. gu and yeom mi-jeong (son seok-ku and kim ji-won acting the house down) but every one of the three main storylines is well-paced, gives the main actors moments to shine and grow, and ties neatly into the overarching plot to render you either moved or comforted, or even both. | genre: slice of life, melodrama
VINCENZO (2020): at this point are there still followers on this blog who haven't at least seen me talk about vincenzo? the writing of this show is maybe the peak of genre-blending done in kdrama, a culmination of years refining this skill to sharp perfection in a biting black comedy. vincenzo cassano (song joong-ki), consiglieri of a mafia clan he got adopted into, goes back to south korea to recover a frankly unholy amount of gold and fights a gigantic conglomerate (babel) to get there. if you watch past episode four, you will finish this drama, because everything ensuing from then on is just one iconic story beat after another. | genre: black comedy / satire, crime, romance
HOSPITAL PLAYLIST (2020-2022): a medical drama beyond reproach. this show is on this list for the way it wrote its characters and achieved the most satisfying character arcs in any kdrama, maybe, ever. a group of five friends in their fourties all working at the same hospital and navigating their professional and private lives, this drama doesn't shy away from eclectic backstories (and the leads all playing music together in a band) as well as truly heart-tearing moments of friendship and romance. never have i seen character growth done as well as i have seen it in the characters of yang seok-hyeong and kim-jun-wan. | genre: medical, slice of life, rom-com
D.P. / DESERTER PURSUIT (2021-2023): d.p. to me is a no-notes kind of show. it depicts the work of the military police pursuing army deserters through freshly enlisted ahn jun-ho (jung hae-in playing years below his age and leagues above many his actual age) who ends up empathizing and working to help and save the deserters he and his team partner han ho-yeol (an exceptional koo kyo-hwan) are meant to bring back to the army instead of incriminating them further. d.p. is much better for its tone, its writing and the risks it takes in its no-nonsense approach than some of the drivel revered solely for being more flashy and showy in this genre. | genre: military drama, action
★★★★☆ dramas (aka near-perfection):
PRISON PLAYBOOK (2017): the perfect prototype of the bromance as romance formula and one of the best found family dramas that really focuses on that. star baseball player kim je-hyuk (park hae-soo in his career-defining role) loses his career and lands in prison after he assaults the ex-boyfriend of his younger sister to protect her. the show centers on je-hyuk's time in prison, where he reunites with his childhood best-friend-now-prison-guard lee jun-ho (a supreme jung kyung-ho) and assimilates himself with the people he meets in his cell. this show hits all the beats so well from a stellar supporting cast to a great comeback kid narrative for je-hyuk from his time in prison to being released. glaring flaw: the age-gap / childhood friends romance, the conclusion of hanyang's story arc, who gets the short end of the stick while being the one out gay character in the show. | genre: black comedy, found family, slice of life
GOBLIN: THE LONELY AND GREAT GOD (2017): the defining kdrama for many. it may be the one drama that really delivers in answering its plot's defining question twice over and then some. goblin kim shin (gong yoo), cursed to immortality, gets his life upended once a grim reaper (lee dong-wook as wang yeo, a performance never to be seen or repeated again since) and the young woman (kim go-eun as ji eun-tak) who turns out to be his fated bride enter his life. an immortal man resigned on life finds purpose while knowing he will fatally die once the woman he falls in love with cures him of his curse. glaring flaw: the age gap romance between eun-tak and kim shin. could she have not been in college at least? | genre: melodrama, romance, fantasy
CRASH LANDING ON YOU (2019): the romance drama that could, and did. based on a real life incident, ceo yoon se-ri (son ye-jin, an acting veteran near beyond reproach imo) accidentally crash lands in north korea after a paragliding flight gone wrong. there she meets active duty soldier captain ri jeong-hyeok (hyun bin, thank you for your service) and has to stay with him and his military company. the fated love story starts there, but neither of them know they have met before, and already changed the courses of each other's lives before doing so again. minor flaw: is this drama romanticising the military? or is depicting of that on screen just that and nothing more? that is up to you to decide. | genre: melodrama, romance
HOMETOWN CHA CHA CHA (2021): the series remake of a korean rom-com film of the early aughts, this remains my favourite romance drama over all. dentist yoon hye-jin (shin min-a blessing our screens) moves to rural gongjin, a seaside village where nothing happens at all, after her professional life in seoul goes up in flames. it's not all sunshine in gongjin either as ye-jin meets hong du-sik (kim seon-ho),a handyman who is called chief hong by everyone and fixes all the big and small fires in the village. the two start as enemies that eventually fall in love. the romance is well-handled and paced and the second lead (lee sang-yi) is the best i have ever seen in a show, especially because of the arc written for him. minor flaw: the plot is not as tight as the respective character arcs, so sometimes sacrifices are made for the sake of a more emotional scenes. | genre: rom-com, slice of life
THE GLORY (2022): when you put the revenge in revenge drama, this is what you can get. song hye-ko returns to small screen brilliance in an incomparable performance as moon dong-eun, a woman who decides to infiltrate the lives of her school bullies and take them down one by one. this show delivers on plot even more than on characters, following through on every step of moon dong-eun's revenge without shying away from how gruesome or painful that path of vengeance can be. dong-eun gets help from plastic surgeon joo yeo-jeong (a delightful lee do-hyun), and the main cast is rounded out by lim ji-yeon and jung sung-il as dong-eun's grown up tormentor and her reluctant husband respectively. minor flaw: the show does spend a big chunk of its time on the group of school bullies and their interpersonal relations, which sometimes takes time away from the main plot. | genre: psychological thriller, revenge drama
♡ more specific genre watches (beware: usually crime):
LIFE (2018): written by the writers of secret forest, life is another thriller with understated direction and a more sombre tone. i would have put it in the greatest hits category, but watching it with other people made me realise how niche it actually is in genre. a corporate hospital thriller, the show revolves around the newly-minted ceo of sangkook university hospital, gu seung-hyo (a once again flawless cho seung-woo) and a dedicated ER doctor (lee dong-wook, stellar as ever) who depict the two sides of the patient care vs. profit conflict in the hospital. i can't even say more about the show because every other plot point is basically a spoiler. sharply directed and written, this is one of the best genre pieces i have ever watched, and is mildly reminiscent of hbo prestige television of the decade before. | genre: medical drama, corporate thriller
THE WORST OF EVIL (2023): are you even surprised? this was the drama of 2023 for me, one of the most stellar scripts i have seen. the worst of evil is very firmly a noir show and you have to treat what you are watching as such. it is heavily entrenched into its genre tropes and arcs, even more than most crime shows i have seen, and that can be off-putting for people unfamiliar with the genre, but if you are up for it, you will not be disappointed. opportune violent crime detective park jun-mo (ji chang wook, korea's finest new gen action actor) infiltrates a drug ring lead by jung gi-cheol ( fantastic and emotional tour de force by wi ha joon) and the lines begin to blur when neither of them knows if what they bargained for is actually what they want. the show lets its main plot dictate the pace, focusing on park jun-mo's descent into crime, and it is all the more better for it. | genre: noir, crime thriller, action
BEYOND EVIL (2020): the story about dejected and grieving small-town detective lee dong-sik (baeksang-awarded veteran actor shin ha-kyun) being partnered with elite detective and spinster seoulite han joo-won (child actor prodigy turned actor to watch du jour) has made its waves online for its very apparent gay subtext, but to reduce beyond evil to this would be a crime in itself. following lee dong-sik and han joo-won as they are tasked to solve a reoccurring serial killer case, the framing plot then fans open the age-old wound of dong-sik losing his twin sister and being blamed for her disappearance with joo-won having taken an obsessive fascination with the case. the two crime cases are exceptionally interwoven and the stories of the people in the small town of manyang, and how they all somehow tie back to dong-sik, is the perfect example of turning the small centrepiece of a plot into the binding force of every thread. | genre: procedural, psychological thriller
OUR BELOVED SUMMER (2021): i put this into the genre-piece category because obl is majorly focused on its main trope. romantic dramas can easily be trite to me, as this obvious list of crime shows doesn't tell you, but our beloved summer is one of the few that did everything right. it plays out the best trope ever done - exes to lovers - and does not back down from embracing the whole shebang to the nth degree. high school / college sweethearts choi woong (known beloved actor on ye-xiu tumblr dot com, choi woo-shik) and kook yeun-soo (the ever great kim da-mi) have to unite to replicate, or rather continue, the viral high school documentary they filmed years ago. the show shimmies its way from one moment of reconnection to another, culminating in the best kdrama kiss to ever be put to screen, and concludes in one of the most satisfying and, yes, romantic endings ever. the things a show can do when it just sticks to its main narrative, huh. | genre: rom-com, coming of age

Immortal Being that Still Somehow has Parent Issues: Myul Mang/Doom (Doom at your Service) Lee Yeon & Lee Rang (Tale of the Nine Tailed) Jeong Gu-won (My Demon)
Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal, alive parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids) Baek Hyun-woo (Queen of Tears, nothing wrong with them out of the ordinary and they are in the drama a significant amount.) Ha Eun-gyeol (Twinkling Watermelon, very loving parents and the deafness and their reliance on him is not anyone's fault)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned. ***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry. ****This character is tricky because he was explicitly raised as an orphan by his grandma, his father didn't sign his birth certificate (Korean equivalent of this), and he's registered as the child of his grandmother, not his actual mom. His grandma is dead by the beginning of the series and he is living alone without family, so I think he counts as an orphan.
Uncatagorized due to lack of clarity on parents: Soundtrack #1, Hospital Playlist, Happiness

Thoroughly enjoyed the shamanism/shamanistic, folkloric and supernatural horror base of the show. The mysteries were quite engaging as well. Performances were obviously top-notch, and storylines wonderfully coherent and solid too.
Skipped parts of the last three episodes but due to bits and pieces here, got most of the storyline still. Ended beautifully and hopeful.
A superb 8.0-8.2.
The themes the show touched on varies and fascinatingly relevant, and I thought weaved into the folkloric and shamanistic aspects well. Human greed, wickedness, the sociopathy of the rich/powerful, will-to-live/survive, family/generational trauma, economic hardship, a sprinkle of socio-economic issues in South Korea were threaded logically and with sensitivity.
That said, the emotions about those issues could be better provoked. This was a mostly cerebral show for me, and moved me more in the mind than heart. Still excellent though.
I think one could write reams of paper on the issues brought up here though, no least the sociological aspects of the folkloric and supernatural as it pertains to human activities and emotions. Am sure there are already studies/research about those, but the show weaved them together fascinatingly.
Could not help but feel for poor Lee Hyang-Gi and her younger sister - Mok Dan - too. They were innocents in this, and hard to fault the poor girl for doing what she did after everything she had to go through. All blame were on the older Yeoms (and the shaman; even to an extent, the parents and villagers) and their greed and wickedness (which is par for the course of the privileged, especially). And of course, girls are always - commonly - the first to be sacrificed 😡🤬😭😭😭
The more sobering fact is the show and its world is considered “reality” in certain parts of the world, and not merely fiction. The use of the supernatural to further one’s ambitions, unwholesome intentions etc are common for some people. Not that I personally think they work, just that some people certainly swear by its effectiveness.
All said though, nothing wins over “The Guest” for me personally. To be fair, while both shows share certain themes, they are quite different, and I have enjoyed both, though my heart will always remain with TG. I mean, I am still shipping the characters from TG even when I have to do it alone. The shipping potential for “Revenant” is definitely there as well, and I have read a few lovely fanfic for San Yeong/Hae Sang, so there is that. San Yeong and Hong Sae would be sweet too.
Glad I finally jumped in and completed the show. Well worth the time spent on it.

Mini-rant:
Me and SBS non-Romance dramas: 왜❓(Wae/Why?!)
What is it with SBS and the non-shippable vibes of some of its shows?
I started “Revenant” with a ship (already read a few fics) and came out the other end 😅🤔🫠 This is not the first time either. Non-Romances usually have some good chemistry too, yet 😬🫥
Solid writing, memorable performances and beautiful directing with a sleek feel etc, yet the chemistry stayed firmly platonic (for me). Why???
There must be something in the “sauce” of SBS dramas which blocks my shipping-vibes antennae. Just a roundly weird phenomenon 🫠😭😔😥

Why You Need to Watch When the Weather is Fine
Starring: Park Min Young, Seo Kang Joon, Lee Jae Wook Synopsis Mok Hae Won (Park Min Young) is sick of the big city bullshit and returns to the small town where she spent her high school years and meets her old classmate Eun Seob (Seo Kang Joon). She decided to take a break from the rat race in Seoul and stay until the weather is nice. The story and the plot itself is simple and understated but…
