MAHATMA GANDHI
MAHATMA GANDHI
2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948
Gandhi was born in India when India, including Pakistan and Bangladesh were under the British Empire. He studied law in London and worked in law in South Africa and then afterwards returned to India.
Gandhi was the leader of the National Congress Party of India. He campaigned for India to be independent from British rule. He led two non-violent campaigns against the Brits which led to his imprisonment. He was released from prison in 1924, and India gained independence due to Gandhi leading peaceful demonstrations, boycotting British goods and refusing to co-operate with the authorities. In 1930, only Britian could make and sell salt, in protest, Gandhi led the ‘Salt March’ to the sea. In 1944, the British granted India independence.
Many Indian Muslims wanted to have a separate country for themselves, and didn’t want to live amongst the Hindus. Gandhi believed that the people of India, regardless of religious beliefs, should be able to live together. India was divided and a Muslim Pakistan was created by the Islamic movement, this division created riots, and many people died. Large number of Hindu’s became homeless and had to travel miles for safety and were forced to find a new home.
Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, aged 78 by a Hindu extremist.

"When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been murderers and tyrants, and for a time they can seem invincible. But in the end they always fall. Think of it, always."
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2nd October 1869-1948)

"First, they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they deride you, then they insult you, then they scold at you, then they threaten you, then they attack and fight you, then they annihilate you,… and then you lose ! …and even IF you "win", you won't be satisfied with your "Achievements" and the Outcome, and you will become entangled in Contradictions and Inconsequences, so much that you don't see a Way OUT again ! You will lose ALL Benefits, ALL Support and ALL Trust and ALL Understanding for ALL Time so that you can't tell if you would not just rather want to get ignored and forgotten for all Time… rather than being stigmatized as and treated like the worst Evildoer of all Mankind and of all human History!"
