Yamasaki, Leinweber & Associates designed 22400 West Seven Mile Road for the American Concrete Institute as its first permanent headquarters (ACI was founded in 1905 as the National Association of Cement Users). Completed in 1958, it is instantly recognizable as the work of Yamasaki, even if you didn't know he designed it. According to the website, Michigan Modern, all ACI asked was for a dramatic building that showcased concrete as a viable building material. Needless to say, they got what they asked for. ACI relocated into a new building in 1996. In recent years, the building was home to Starr Commonwealth, a social service group. It is currently home to EcoWorks, a Detroit-based non-profit that provides services focused on community development and sustainability. #Detroit #Westside #NorthwestDetroit #CurtainWall #Modernism #MinoruYamasaki #SevenMileRoad #WestSevenMile #archi_ologie #MidModMondays #ModMondayz #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at EcoWorks) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAWbkaRDa_n/?igshid=193zwsfxkyhet

611 Woodward Avenue was completed in 1959 as the new National Bank of Detroit (NBD) headquarters. The bank was previously located inside the First National Building, located across the street. The new building was designed by Albert Kahn Associates, not Kahn himself, who died 17 years earlier. It was among the first of a wave of structures of modernity that arose from the ashes of perhaps the darkest period in Detroit's architectural history. In fact, not one, but two late 19th century buildings were sacrificed in this case - Detroit's first skyscraper, the Hammond Building (1889, George H. Edbrooke) and the original Union Trust Building (1896, Donaldson & Meier). The latter half of the 20th century saw a movement to "modernize" cities around the globe. This movement, known as urban renewal, saw older architecture be replaced with sleek, modern designs. Detroit was arguably the epicenter of this movement. Unfortunately, along with the aforementioned buildings, the city's beloved (and much missed) Old City Hall (1871, James Anderson), the Majestic Building, Detroit's second skyscraper (1896, D. H. Burnham & Company) and many more would meet the wrecking ball during this era. The new NBD headquarters is an example of curtain wall architecture, meaning the exterior walls are non-structural and utilized only to keep weather out and occupants in. But let's be honest, it resembles a giant cheese grater, doesn't it? Admit it! After several mergers, the building is now home to Chase Bank. It was purchased by billionaire Dan Gilbert in 2011 and renamed The Qube. WXYZ-TV, the local ABC affiliate, opened a downtown studio on the first floor in 2014. #Detroit #Downtown #FinancialDistrict #CurtainWall #Modernism #AlbertKahnAssociates #WoodwardAvenue #archi_ologie #MidModMondays #ModMondayz #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at The Qube WXYZ Downtown Studio) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-8eacMDN66/?igshid=1d2e1kcc7calc

The Balmoral, located at 361 Covington Drive, is a 4-story, brick and limestone Art Moderne apartment complex built in 1937. It, along with its neighbor, The Fairlane, were designed by local architect Robert West, responsible for several buildings in the district. According to historical records, The Balmoral was the first in Palmer Park to have corner casement windows, which became very fashionable beginning in the ‘30s. #Detroit #NorthwestDetroit #PalmerPark #ArtDeco #ArtModerne #Modernism #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #ModMondayz #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Palmer Park Apartment Building Historic District) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_L2u1sj1tO/?igshid=65dt2p9mp8ri

What we currently know as the College for Creative Studies was founded as the Detroit Society of Arts & Crafts in 1906 by a group of leaders in the arts inspired by the English Arts & Crafts Movement. The current building was designed by Minoru Yamasaki, and it bears his unmistakable touch. The steel and glass building is surrounded by a wall made of red perforated brick, which acted to blend in with the surroundings at the time and shield occupants from the noise of the bustling streets nearby. In 1975, the Detroit Society of Arts & Crafts became CCS.
The Arts & Crafts Building, or Yamasaki Building, as it is known today, is one of a trifecta of Yama designs completed in 1958 - the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on Wayne State’s campus and the former American Concrete Institute Building on West Seven Mile being the others. #Detroit #CulturalCenter #MidtownDetroit #CCSDetroit #CurtainWall #Modernism #MinoruYamasaki #archi_ologie #MidModMondays #ModMondayz #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter

The Macomb County Building at 10 North Main Street in downtown Mount Clemens was designed by architect George J. Haas, of St. Clair Shores. The building replaced a previous courthouse from 1880. The land itself had been deeded to Macomb County by Christian Clemens, founder of Mt. Clemens, with the stipulation that it be utilized as a county seat. The cornerstone was laid on July 1, 1931. However, due to the onslaught of the Great Depression, construction was halted. On June 5, 1933, a second dedication ceremony was held for the unfinished structure. Construction continued for more than a decade in piecemeal fashion with funds from various sources, including the Civil Works Administration, Public Works Administration and Works Progress Administration, as well as $17,000 donated by the Veteran's Administration. Workers were paid from current and delinquent taxes. Total cost of construction was $605,000. When the building was being planned, a military motif was favored, due to the location's close proximity to Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Atop the building are carved figures emblematic of the branches of military at the time (soldier, sailor, marine and aviator) as well as a nod to the county's past with Native American and American Revolution soldier. The soldier and marine were strategically placed to gaze in the direction of Selfridge. The exterior features an array of other relief work, most notably figures representing justice and a recorder that flank either side of the main entrance. Several renovations have taken place over the years, such as the replacement of the manually operated elevators in 1974 and air conditioning in 1975. On April 17, 2013, an electrical fire broke out in the building, displacing approximately 200 county employees. In 2016, the Macomb County Building reopened after more than 3 years and a $19 million renovation, the facility's first complete modernization in its over 80-year history. #MetroDetroit #MountClemens #MacombCounty #ArtDeco #Modernism #GeorgeJHaas #GratiotAvenue #archi_ologie #ModMondayz #thedecodarling #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Old Macomb County Building) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6rkkaylNGT/?igshid=scufiojul855

The building at 10920 Grand River was built in 1938 as one of the city's beloved Cunningham Drug Stores. It was designed by the great Charles N. Agree in a Streamline Moderne style. The green enameled steel facade was a hallmark of sorts for the chain. The intersection of Grand River and Oakman was once a bustling shopping district, one of several along Grand River, in fact. The building still operates as a pharmacy, albeit with considerably less fanfare these days. #Detroit #Westside #NorthwestDetroit #ArtDeco #ArtModerne #StreamlineModerne #Modernism #CharlesNAgree #GrandRiverAvenue #GrandRiverAve #OakmanBoulevard #archi_ologie #ModMondayz #thedecodarling #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Grand Value Pharmacy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2eZpfbF0t-/?igshid=7dk17u3prbdg

The William & Mary Palmer House at 227 Orchard Hills Drive in Ann Arbor was built in 1952 for William & Mary Palmer, both graduates of the University of Michigan. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright during his Usonian period, the last great era of his long, prolific career. The Palmer residence is noted for it use of triangular geometry - no right angles were used in the designing of the structure. The exterior features several materials such as "claycraft" brick, perforated ceramic block and red tidewater cypress. The unmistakable cantilevered roof is constructed of cedar shingles and copper. Like many others, the interior includes Wright-designed furniture. The Palmers acquired the secluded hillside property in 1949 and began searching for an architect. Among those considered were Michigan based architects such as George Brigham, considered Ann Arbor's first modern architect, and Alden B. Dow, a pupil of FLW and a master in his own right. After seeing Wright's Affleck House in Bloomfield Hills, they sought him to design their home. Construction began in 1950. The Palmer House is a testament to Wright's incomparable ability of meshing architecture and the natural landscape around it. The Palmer family owned the home until 2009, when it was purchased by Jeffrey and Kathryn Schox, alumni of U of M. Jeffrey, a patent attorney living in San Francisco, visits Ann Arbor several weeks a year. Otherwise, the home is available for rent as a guest house as well as business meetings and special events. #AnnArbor #WashtenawCounty #Usonian #Modernism #FrankLloydWright #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #MidModMondays #ModMondayz #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MichiganPlacesMatter #WrightSites (at The Frank Lloyd Wright Palmer House) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2NP9V_lvVK/?igshid=124nhp6x7dvqr
