The Forgotten Mach 2: Ford's 1967 Mid-Engined Mustang Prototype
The Forgotten Mach 2: Ford's 1967 Mid-Engined Mustang Prototype
In the Swinging Sixties, Ford's promotional photo featured a stylish couple beaming with joy as they prepared to take a ride in the Mach 2, essentially a mid-engined Mustang. This sleek, closed coupe boasted a 289 V8 engine, ZF 4-speed transaxle, and amenities like a radio and heater.
"Wait a minute", you may be thinking, if you're old enough to remember the Sixties, or if you've been reading this blog for awhile. "Wasn't there a mid-engined Mustang before there was any other kind?" Well, yeah, there was a drivable concept car based on the front-drive German Ford Taunus V4 powertrain, the Mustang 1*, but that was in 1962, and the roofless projectile seemed to be aimed mostly at SCCA racers ...
The Mach 2's story began in 1966, when Ford's Total Performance program aimed to infuse the GT40's mid-engined glamour into a production car. A Mustang convertible chassis was transformed into a concept chassis by Kar Kraft, incorporating Mustang front suspension, front disc brakes, and Galaxy rear drums. The independent rear suspension was borrowed from engineer Klaus Arning's patented multi-link design for Mustang 1.
Two running prototypes were built, with fiberglass bodies styled by Gene Bordinat's team. The first, a white car intended as an SCCA-ready weekend racer, suffered from chassis flex, while the second, a red example, had a reinforced chassis. The red Mach 2 was showcased at auto shows and featured in car magazines.
With a 107-inch wheelbase, similar to the new Corvette C8, and a weight of around 2,600 pounds, the Mach 2's performance was lively. Ford envisioned pricing it around $7,500, slightly above the Shelby AC 427 Cobra.
However, the Mach 2 program was ultimately scrapped. Ford's success with the Mustang and Shelby's modified versions meant that the Mach 2 was relegated to the sidelines. The white test car was crushed, and the red prototype was returned to Kar Kraft, disappearing from public view.
Rumors of the red Mach 2's fate have persisted, with some speculating that it may still be hidden away, waiting to be rediscovered. The possibility of finding this forgotten prototype has captivated car enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into an alternate history of American automotive innovation.
1967 Ford Mach 2
1967 Ford Mach 2
1967 Ford Mach 2
1967 Ford Mach 2
The 1967 Ford Mach 2 was a mid-engine sports car concept that was never mass produced. It was a two-seater with a GT style, low-sloping hood and front fenders, with a body made of fiberglass. Ford built the first one which was based on a shortened version of the 1966 Mustang convertible floor pan. Two more were built by Kar Kraft based on 1967 Mustangs and powered by a 289ci high performance engine mounted in the middle of the car. It had a five-speed manual transmission, independent rear suspension, and adjustable pedals derived from the 1962 Mustang-I.
Two fully functional prototypes were built:
• Red prototype: The production car candidate, with a revised engine cradle, adjustable Koni shocks, and a redesigned front end
•White prototype: A development mule for racing, with a modified 289, competition-spec components, and a lighter fiberglass body.
The Mach 2 was extensively tested, but the results were not encouraging. The road car handled well, but generated too much body roll at high speeds. The race car's chassis was not stiff enough, distorting under heavy loads. By the fall of 1967, Ford's designers had shifted their focus to the Mach 2A, and the three Mach 2 prototypes were left with Kar Kraft for disposal.

This build series is incredible.
This guy Larry Hofer took an 8.1L early 2000s big block Chevy V8 truck engine (which had fixed cam/valve timing and port fuel injection), installed custom aluminum cylinder heads that he modified to use direct injection fuel injectors, and designed a custom camshaft and timing cover that incorporates a variable cam timing phaser sprocket (both technologies from a modern small block V8 engine).
Then he took a brand new 8th-generation mid-engine Corvette, removed the modern 6.2L direct injected vvt-equipped small-block V8, and found a way to install his custom 8.1L direct-injection-and-vvt-retrofitted big block V8 into the back of it, while using the original engine’s computer, switching the sensors out to trick it into thinking it’s still running the stock 6.2L small block. He also modified the stock exhaust headers to fit the wider port locations on the new engine, used the new 6.2 ignition coils, and made a hybrid 6.2/8.1 crank position sensor.
And while they’re still working on getting it running right, it runs.
There hasn’t been a factory big block corvette since 1974. And now there’s a big block in a brand new C8 (8th-gen). And when they’re done with it, it’ll run like it came from the factory that way.
I can’t wait to see how it drives and sounds when it’s all done, it’s going to be so cool, it already sounds great at idle on the GoPro video

New Post has been published on https://www.vividracing.com/blog/139824-2/
In 2022, car enthusiasts all over the United States were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Nissan Z. In the new Z, not 400Z, it seems Nissan answered all of our prayers. Equipped with a 3.0L VR30DDTT Twin Turbo V6 and a 6 speed FS6R31 manual transmission, the new Z34 (Kouki Z34) seemed to fill all the gaps Nissan left in the Zenki Z34 and R35 that left true drivers wanting more. With a power output at an even 400hp (298kw; 406ps) and 350 ftlbs (475 N-m 48 kg-m) of torque, the new Z34 was unlike any of its predecessors and a breath of fresh air in the middle of the ‘Sports Car Electrification Movement’. Nissan then broke some hearts, mine included, when they announced the 420hp, 384ftlb Z34 Nismo would be equipped with a rebadged Mercedes 9G-Tronic automatic transmission manufactured under Jatco as the JR913E and that there would be no manual option for the Nismo Z. Their reasoning: Even with more power, the automatic sport model would be faster in the ¼ mile than a manual Nismo, and they feared consumers would care.
Fast forward to release day, and the reasonably priced Nissan Z saw dealer markups of over $70,000 over MSRP on what could be Nissan’s final true sports car. Somehow, clout and fear of missing out beat common sense and they sold like hotcakes. So much so, that as of the writing of this article, the least expensive USED Nissan Z on the market is being offered at $7,000 above NEW MSRP. Now to bring it all into perspective, if you were an early buyer of a Nissan Z, you’re punching in Audi RS5 Coupe, BMW M4 Competition xDrive, and C8 Corvette territory price-wise, except you likely have cloth seats, less power, and are a good deal slower from 0-60 than your newly priced out competition… and the EFI scientist here at Vivid Racing just can’t let you go out like that.

While we have options for your interior woes, and styling upgrades that make the car look the part of the markup, we were focused on two things and two things only: horsepower and torque… and drivability (I’m aware that’s three things). When this Two-tone Ikazuchi Yellow Tricoat / Super Black Kouki Z34 rolled into our dyno lab, we were impressed. It put down an underrated 405hp and 475ftlbs of torque through the automatic transmission, which was more than we all expected. Immediately wanting to unlock the ECU and start our flash process, the customer let us know the factory warranty was very important to him and that he would like to keep it. Luckily here at VR Tuned, we have developed a Warranty-safe tune with our VR Tuned Tuning Box. Basically, this system acts as a piggy back. It requires no cutting or splicing and does not modify the way any of the factory sensors work. Instead, through science and electrical engineering and magic, it provides safe, modified data to the factory ECU, allowing us modify boost, fuel and spark strategies that ultimately results in a 65hp increase over stock and 85 more ftlbs or torque through our VR Forged wheels.
To make it more user-friendly for the driver, we included optional Bluetooth control for both iOS and Android platforms, allowing the user to quickly change between 7 performance maps, or simply turn the tuning box off for emissions purposes from their phone. With 3 active drive modes (Race, Sport, and Eco) included, and German tuning box construction, we feel Vivid Racing has crafted the ultimate tuning solution for Nissan Z owners looking to retain their factory warranty. We also found the best exhaust system for making big power, and the best suspension system to keep it all under control, so there’s no need to take it one step at a time. The next stop for us and the Z should be a track day, so subscribe if you want to see more.
So whether you want to be the talk of the town at the next local cars and coffee, or you want to take a few hot laps around the track in extreme comfort, shoot me an email at [email protected] to get your Z right.

They still make this but that's kind of what happens with Ferraris and it wouldn't be a replica it would be a kit car and it wouldn't look exactly the same and he says it can kind of cut out some things that are too difficult to make and don't make sense so you take a mid-engine Corvette whatever they call him c7 or c8 or c9 and you apply this body to it and this is a metal body a kit car would be carbon fiber and we would make it out of carbon fiber are different mix and we would have the cage and a roll cage and the Corvette does not in the Ferrari does not they're inferior vehicles. With the Corvette motor and chassis and you can even leave the tires and rims they're cool looking and you make it fit and save a lot of money you might want to modify the exhaust and top end you'll probably include that because it would make it into a monster right now it is about a 6.2 L I think or something and it has about 450 horsepower with the top end of the exhaust it would have about 800 horsepower and you have to add cooling and it would sound like a massive monster and he says this is my style and I've been sitting there trying to have my lady make one and she's really not into it she has to kind of follow me he says and she does she says you can't have my car it's like a moon shot car he says I don't want to go to the Moon that's your thing and that's good. She's not into it so it doesn't happen he's saying what is this he's into this he likes Ferrari and he used to be very into it hello turned off but it's by these people and he says that he made the world's fastest car and before he made the Austin Martin and now Ferrari is changing the design and it will be much faster than the Aston Martin which is one of his car he has a lot of gas okay. We are going to approve this idea and it's a kit car and it will resemble this. This is an awesome Ferrari and they are not making it this year so that's one plus they made it last year 2024 is very very fast their version goes about 800 hours with the Corvette with the top end kit and exhaust we go 950 mph
This car will rival anything on the road and most likely beat it and that's the kit car and it is going to be what you see here you have to call it something else and Le Ferrari is not going to cut it. Lol even if it's French not italian. Ferrero no so he doesn't really know what to call him and he'll think of maybe dark horse but that's the symbol we kind of like the idea but really no. So he said okay it's a Mancini and her will be stuck with Mantini and she says I'm not stuck with it I want to do that.
It's really his brothers character but our son has a couple of them and one of them is a strong man and I think it's our son and only a few people know about it maybe like 20,000 people and we want to find out who they are and Hera has about 40,000 that know about her and her husband says you should have used the towel and kept it on and she said shut up why don't you so this is what it's like but yeah that's a great name and the f80 is a reference to the engine no it's a model number based on what type of car it is it's a Ferrari and it's a then it means it 800 mph and we said no but that's kind of what it is. This would be then the Mancini m95 and you can put it out and he says then he can make one that's less expensive off for a front wheel drive vehicle and make tons of them and people want it different Ferrari and he would of course want one of these kit car version wow
And we will print we do have a couple more things to mention

The C8 Z06 X Brace - Everything You Need to Know
You just bought a C8 Z06 and you're wondering what the heck that X-shaped brace is doing behind the seats. Don't worry, you're not alone. That odd X is stirring up curiosity across Corvette forums everywhere. Turns out, it's a crucial component that Chevy engineers specially designed for the Z06 to make the chassis more rigid. We'll break down what the X brace is, why Chevy added it, and most importantly, how it transforms the driving experience in your Z06. In this article, you'll get the full scoop so you can geek out on the details with fellow Vette owners.
Understanding the C8 Z06 X Brace
The X brace on the C8 Z06 connects the chassis rails, providing additional structural rigidity and handling performance. Without this crucial component, the C8 Z06 wouldn't be the track beast we know and love.
The X brace spans the width of the vehicle, connecting the right and left chassis rails. It helps reduce chassis flex under heavy cornering loads, allowing the suspension to work more efficiently. This results in sharper turn-in, better steering feel, and faster corner exit speeds.
The X brace is made from lightweight but extremely rigid aluminum and bolts directly to the chassis rails. It's positioned just behind the seats, so it doesn't intrude into the cabin space. You may not even realize it's there while driving, but you'll certainly appreciate its benefits every time you throw your Z06 into a turn.
Benefits of Installing a C8 Z06 X Brace
Installing an X brace on your C8 Z06 Corvette provides many benefits to improve handling, stability and performance.
Increased Stiffness
An X brace connects the front and rear subframes of your Corvette, effectively tying the front and rear ends of the chassis together. This added bracing minimizes chassis flex which allows the suspension to work more efficiently. The stiffer chassis results in more precise steering, better weight transfer and improved cornering.
While the X brace requires little to no maintenance, it's important to inspect it periodically to ensure all bolts remain tight. Any looseness or damage could negatively impact the handling and performance of your Z06. If you plan to modify or remove the X brace for any reason, do so carefully and be aware it will reduce rigidity and may affect your vehicle's dynamics.
The C8 Z06 X brace may seem like a minor detail, but it's essential for transforming the Corvette into the world-class sports car we've come to revere. Without it, the Z06 just wouldn't have the chops to back up those aggressive looks.
Reduced Understeer
The added stiffness from an X brace reduces understeer or "push" in corners. Understeer is when the front tires lose grip before the rear tires, causing the front end to slide outward in a corner. By minimizing chassis flex, an X brace provides a solid platform for the suspension to keep the tires planted in corners. This results in balanced, neutral handling with less understeer.
Better Braking
An X brace also improves braking performance. The rigid chassis prevents the front end from dipping or "diving" under heavy braking. This means the front tires remain evenly loaded, allowing maximum braking force to be applied. The result is shorter, more stable stops.
Overall, an X brace is one of the best handling upgrades you can make to your C8 Z06 Corvette. For the performance enthusiast, the benefits to stiffness, balance, turn-in and braking can transform the driving experience. If you're looking to maximize the handling capability of your Z06, an X brace is the way to go.
How to Install a C8 Z06 X Brace on Your Corvette
Installing an X brace on your C8 Z06 Corvette is a straightforward process, but does require some mechanical skill. The X brace helps stiffen and strengthen the chassis for improved handling and performance. If you're comfortable working on your Corvette, here are the steps to install the X brace yourself:
1. Lift and support the vehicle
You'll need to get the rear of your Corvette off the ground so you can access the underside. Use jack stands for support. Make sure the vehicle is stable before crawling underneath.
2. Remove the lower control arms
The lower control arms will need to be detached from the rear subframe to install the X brace. Support the control arms, then remove the bolts that attach them to the subframe. Gently lower the control arms down.
3. Attach the X brace mounts
The X brace mounts attach to the rear sub frame where the lower control arms were connected. Loosely bolt the X brace mounts in place. Do not fully tighten yet.
4. Install the X brace
Slide the X brace up into the mounts. The braces should form an X shape under the rear sub frame.
Conclusion
The C8 Z06 X brace isn't just some shiny new accessory to bolt onto your Vette - it's an essential performance upgrade that stiffens the chassis, reduces flex, and allows you to push your Z06 harder through corners without losing composure. Installing one might seem daunting at first, but with the right tools and some patience, it's a manageable DIY job. And the payoff is huge - your Z06 will feel tighter, turn-in will sharpen up, and you'll have more confidence attacking those winding backroads. The factory brace is fine, but the X brace takes things to another level. If you're serious about maxing out your Z06's capabilities, this mod is a must-do. Now go get yourself an X brace and feel the difference it makes out on your favorite twisty route!

Which Corvette C8 Z06 Exhaust Sounds the Best?
Which one sounds the best? This is the eternal issue when it comes to buying a new exhaust for your performance car especially with the new Corvette C8 Z06. Luckily there is YouTube and you can listen to different exhaust clips all day long. But how was it recorded? Are you sure this one is the right one for your application? As Performance Specialists, the team at Vivid Racing has heard it all. We like to think of ourselves as your top resource for picking the best exhaust system for your vehicle.
In this latest video, we sit and breakdown the Top 5 Exhaust Systems for the Corvette Z06. This includes talking about the construction, options, and price while finally listening to each system and giving our feedback. So which exhausts did we pick for the Top 5 C8 Z06 Exhaust Systems? Lets look!
youtube
On our list of the Best Exhausts Systems for the Corvette C8 Z06 are in no particular order:
AWE SwitchPath Exhaust for C8 Corvette Z06 – Order Here
AWE is an exhaust manufacture based in the USA that covers a wide array of sports car systems. With a strong heritage in high performance cars like Porsche, the new Z06 is a perfect product for them to build. Their SwitchPath exhaust is a full stainless steel system that utilizes the cars factory valves for a complete bolt on solution. Much like stock, when the valves are open, this bypasses the mufflers to help the flat plane crank deliver an insane sound at wide open throttle. However when the valves are closed, the exhaust routes through their custom mufflers to give you a tame sound as a daily driver. This exhaust saves you 15 lbs off the rear end of the car which is excellent for those looking to improve that power to weight ratio at the track.
Soul Performance Valved Exhaust Package Chevrolet Corvette C8 Z06 – Order Here
Soul Performance has an excellent exhaust product offering for the Corvette Z06 C8. Soul brings in extra horsepower options by having the optional high flow sport cats to go along with their system. Their exhausts are available with or with out valves. Without valves is really for the full race guy that wants the loudest sound possible out of the Z06 engine. Exhausts are also available with upgraded heat shielding. Since the Z06 engine produces a lot of heat out of the exhaust, keeping the temperature off the body is an important factor when modifying these cars. Their entry level exhaust with no valves or heat shielding system comes in weighing 12lbs less than stock.
Corsa 3.0 Inch Catback Exhaust System Chevrolet Corvette C8 Z06 – Order Here
Corsa is another Made in the USA company that brings the most economical pricing to the C8 Z06 exhaust solutions. Their straight pipe no valve, no muffler system comes in at about $2500. This system reuses the stock exhaust tips and is made of full 304 stainless steel. When listening to this sound clip, the straight pipe on the flat plane crank sounds incredible through the RPM range as this Z06 takes off! The exhaust is also available with mufflers and valves for a more tame approach on a daily driver.
Paragon Performance Center Exhaust System Corvette C8 Z06 – Order Here
Paragon has taken the Corvette world by storm with its C8 offerings. Their Z06 exhaust is on the same level of quality and performance of their other C8 products. The exhaust system comes in at only $2000 and is a straight pipe design with no valves. Using their included valve delete modules to plug into the stock sensors, this exhaust is check engine light less! The full stainless steel construction is very light and as tested on their dyno, puts down 16 wheel horsepower!
Fabspeed Valvetronic Exhaust System Corvette C8 Z06 – Order Here
Fabspeed is world renown for their Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini exhaust systems. With the new Corvette C8 Z06 being on that level, they have decided to take their exhaust expertise into this market. Their Corvette Z06 exhausts exhausts are offered as a Valvetronic option so it works with the stock valves or as a full race straight pipe exhaust system. As a further option, they have new carbon fiber tips that can be paired with their exhaust or you can reuse the stock tips. Their dyno tested achieved the highest results with a gain of 30 wheel horsepower at 4600rpm and has a weight savings of nearly 35lbs for the straight pipe system.
