Avatar: the Last Airbender - Vigilante AU

Do you ever think about that one time Katara became a vigilante eco-terrorist called the Painted Lady? I feel like that’s not talked about enough.

Here, Katara and Zuko become Best Friends/Vigilante Buddies without knowing each other’s identity

Platonic Identity Porn. If that wasn’t a thing before, it is now.

Sokka & Aang never discovered Katara’s identity as the Painted Lady but Toph knows all.

This could also be a modern AU, in which case all the Gaang are Vigilantes.

- Katara’s the Painted Lady; her mom, dad, and papa (Kya/Hakoda/Bato) were/are part of a secret group investigating and gathering proof of Ozai’s many violations of Native land rights treaties. Kya got badly injured or killed while investigating and Katara isn’t about to let that slide, even if her parents don’t want her involved. She becomes an ecoterrorist targeting Ozai Incorporated.

- Toph’s the Blind Bandit; she ran away from home and is homeless, surviving by being the champion of an illegal fighting ring. She helps out other homeless people whenever she can but doesn’t go out of her way to patrol or anything.

- Zuko’s the Blue Spirit; after being burned, Iroh discovered the abuse and took custody (which wasn’t hard since Ozai didn’t fight for him). Despite this, Zuko feels it’s his responsibility as a son to stop his father’s economic imperialism.

- Sokka’s a Kyoshi Warrior; part of a vigilante team led by Suki. By day, this team is just a Scout Troop that teaches self-defense.

- Jet runs a gang that doubles as anti-hero vigilantes called the Freedom Fighters. He takes in any homeless or abused kid he can and will do anything to keep them fed, happy, and avenged.

- Azula, Mai, & Ty-Lee are a bounty hunter trio hired by Ozai (a corrupt CEO). Azula’s still his daughter, but being in modern times didn’t stop him from molding her into a child soldier to assassinate his enemies.

- Aang’s a new vigilante trying to avenge the monasteries destroyed by Ozai’s corporation. He’s an exchange student living with Katara, Sokka, Hakoda, Bato, and/or Kya.

- Teo (the Mechanic’s son from the Northern Air Temple) kits out all the vigilantes’ gear, tech, and outfits with help from Sokka.

i started this waaaaay back when i first binged miraculous ladybug. couldn't get over the dynamic of superhero duo who don't know each other's secret identities but do also know each other in their normal lives, and they're in love but they aren't but they are they just don't know it.

you know, i originally was spending so much time trying to think of sokka's alter ego, and i put grey wolf in as a filler but then i realized how Sokka it was. like this other dude in a costume introduces himself like "hey, I'm the Blue Spirit" and sokka who hasn't had time to process yet that he's a superhero and is indeed the worst at naming things, goes, "oh, Blue Spirit? Hi. I'm..... Grey.... Wolf." and then zuko would be like "You just used my name as a template! You just changed the color and the creature!!!" and sokka's like "Whaaaaat! Nooooo. No. I actually had this idea before you even said anything, which means actually you are the one copying me!" and zuko demands he change his name, think of something better, but the news is there so it's already circulating and people are saying what a nice pair they make

atla small town modern au

it’s katara & sokka’s hometown in the southern water tribe, which is being taken over by ozai’s industrialist company as a factory town

their dad is the mayor but he’s gone missing so vice mayor bato has been handling the work and sokka is running his and katara’s household

(hakoda’s missing because ozai hated that he was enacting anti-firecorp policies)

bending is still a thing. katara is a starry-eyed soul who wants to leave her small town to learn waterbending in the big city

sokka is a total pragmatist who thinks the town would collapse without them (he MAY be right)

aang is an undocumented immigrant from the air temples who was sent on the run w gyatso towards the nwt with crucial info to bring to journalists to bust open the evils ceo ozai wrought upon the air nation (e.g. labor exploitation, chokehold on clean water sources)

he got this quest cos he’s still the avatar in this au

got waylaid and separated from gyatso (who might be dead?) and ended up in the swt town

now uses his bending in secret to stack shelves in the local supermarket while trying to figure out how to get to nwt

(he may or may not be putting it off because the responsibility terrifies him)

unbeknownst to aang (and most everyone), the situation in the air nation is getting worse—actual violence is starting to happen

the water damage siblings take him in because they figure it’s their responsibility as the mayor’s kids. but over time they find him so endearing he becomes practically family

zuko has been disowned from his father’s giant conglomerate and believes that by catching the runaway avatar he will be brought back into the family

he pushes iroh into moving into town. he thinks iroh doesn’t know it’s to catch the avatar

in the meantime he picks up a job at the local boba shop and accidentally becomes a vigilante

(sokka develops a huge crush on the mysterious blue spirit)

unfortunately for him the description of the runaway has been switched around, and he thinks toph (another runaway in the same town) is the avatar

toph is friends with aang and is gleefully misleading zuko

she and aang are both out of school youth. toph spends most of her time trouncing people in sports at the local courts but her spending money comes from a huge stash of cash she took out of her parents’ safe before running away

aang is a regular at the boba shop and befriends zuko. zuko thinks aang is just the avatar’s friend and aang thinks zuko is neat. they bond over being new to town

azula comes to town at some point and immediately realizes that toph is not the avatar

(iroh knew all along but doesn’t tell zuko because he a. it’s a good lesson for his nephew and b. he finds it funny)

BONUS:

azula enrolls in the local school trying to find the avatar, accidentally develops a homoerotic rivalry with katara instead

iroh takes her in and sets off her redemption arc

Spiderman au is possessing me

explanation of why there are twi versions of zuko: Basicaly the first image is of zuko when he is not destined to be spider man in a version of this au and so he is the prowler hired by ozai. He then of course goes theouh a redemption arc to help whoevers spiderman take care of the city and take down his father. The au takes place in a modern republic city but there is no bending except for the spider people or villains, like most superhero things. The second image is zuko as spider-man, his spider-name is the blue spirit. When he is spider-man no one else can be a spider person at the same time in his universe, same goes for all other atla spider-people. I lvo ethis au

uhm zukka/zuko/sokka enjoyers would you guys be interested if I were potentially to start posting a fic (on Ao3) I’ve been chipping away at. asking here because I haven’t actually posted on Ao3 before and idk what it’s like over there.

anyway it’s a Zuko centric (but with much Sokka, and appearances from the Gaang (including Suki) and naturally Iroh) hero/villain/vigilante slash modern college au that follows the two boys when they accidentally end up roommates in the same dorm sometime in the equivalent of Season 2 Ba Sing Se and decide to go with it because they both think they can get information from the other. meanwhile in the wacky world of vigilantism Sokka ends up tailing a mysterious vigilante he’s heard is called The Blue Spirit because the guy seems to be active in the area, supposedly saved Aang’s life once, and if he’s a good guy, he could be a useful ally to take down Ozai, corrupt super-powered politician and secret lead of the city’s crime underworld.

Sokka has no powers/bending, Zuko swears up and down that he does (even if he can’t firebend, not like his sister or father or anyone else, even if he can’t really prove it right this second), and I’m working on a superpower system that is largely based on the Avatar spirit world. It’s a relatively slow burn, but we’ll get there, and I will be doing my best to give theatre kid Zuko justice. I’m working on main themes rn but I also hope to dip into sub-themes exploring disability, sexuality, and healing, and there will be an eclipse.

I have the plot outline and various details of the whole story, I’m most (probably?) of the way through Chapter 1 (4000 words and counting), and I’d probably start posting once I finished up the chapter and also decided on a title.

Kataang will also feature relatively canon compliantly :3 and also major character death. mostly temporary but i might change my mind

A zutara prompt, modern au, bending optional.

Katara, sees Zuko and falls in love at first sight. Zuko is confused and concerned about why a really pretty girl would be staring at him.

She should be studying.

She needed to be studying. Spirits, that was the whole reason she was in summer school in the first place! But Katara couldn’t help it. Every time she forced her eyes back to the text book, they’d wonder right back to the window where she could see the training arena. Where she could see him.

The boy was beautiful.

Pale skin sparkling from sweat in the summer sun. Dark hair tied up in a hasty topknot with loose strands sticking to his face. Ripped muscles coupled with a well-defined chest.

Katara flushed, feeling as hot as the fire the boy wielded. She’d give herself five more minutes then return to her anatomy books. Besides, if she thought about it, she technically was studying anatomy right now.

“Still slow as ever, Zuzu.” Azula teased as she opened her water bottle. “But you nearly grazed me this time, so I’ll give you that.”

“Yeah whatever.” Zuko dumped his water on his head and sighed, letting the steam waft off him.

“Dramatic much.” Azula muttered.

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Your secret admirer would beg the differ.” Azula nodded towards the dorm building.

Zuko followed her gaze and saw a Water Tribe girl watching him from a window a floor above them. Even from here, he could see her deep blue eyes and bright red flush. Zuko’s heart fluttered when they made eye contact. The girl flinched and quickly looked away.

“What was that about?”

“Seriously?” Azula asked dryly.

“Maybe she’s never seen advance firebending forms before.” Zuko rubbed his chin and thought about the tension between the Fire Nation and Water Tribes. Since campus was practically deserted during summer school, he’d figure it was fine to firebend outside. “I hope we didn’t make her uncomfortable.”  

Azula rolled her eyes. “You’re unbelievable.” She stole his water bottle and finished it off. “Loser buys ice cream!”

Zuko groaned. He glanced back at the window and caught the name of the building. Whitman dorm. He decided to drop by and clear things up with her.

“I’ll catch up with you later.”

“Fine. You owe me. Plus interest.” Azula shrugged.  “And don’t expect me to go easy on you next training session.”

Zuko waved her off as he headed towards the dorm.

Katara had never been more embarrassed in her entire life.

She buried her head in the textbook to muffle her scream. That’s it. No more using the study room. Katara quickly packed her bags and ran out. It was a 20 minute walk to the library but she clearly couldn’t focus here. She should had left sooner. Spirits, why did it take a hot guy catching her ogling to come to the decision.

Once inside the elevator, Katara sighed deeply. She’s never going to live this down. Hopefully, she’ll never see him again. The elevator ding snapped her out of her spiraling thoughts. Katara barged out, eager to put some distance between her and the embarrassing memory, when she crashed into someone.

“Ow! Watch where…” Katara trailed off.

She knew that chest.

“Sorry about that.” The boy rasped. “Oh, you’re the girl from the window!”

Katara wanted to die.

“I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable with my bending. Since it’s pretty empty out I thought no one would mind.” The boy scratched his head sheepishly. “Um, my sister and I can use the gym if you want-“

“No!” Katara blurted out.

The boy gave her a confused look.

“No, uh, it’s no problem really. I’ve never seen firebending up close and was amazed by your… form.”

“Really?”  

Katara nodded, throat growing dry. Up close, he was even more enamoring and sincere.

“Wow, thanks. That’s a relief. I’m Zuko by the way.”

“Katara.”

“I was about to head to the cafeteria. Wanna come?” Zuko glanced at her bag. “Oh, unless you were heading somewhere.

“It’s fine really.” Katara smiled and shook her head. “I love a good distraction.”
