As someone who doesn't really like grimdark -- my biggest annoyance in 'historical style' fantasy writing (y'know, the standard medieval fantasy, or other eras) is that everything is trying so hard to be Game of Thrones, and it's just like 'please stop'. Not everything has to be about the conception of society being a terrible place full of violence and violence being the only answer and everything is dirty and everyone is mean, and so on so forth that GRRM and his fans like to posit as 'historically accurate'.
People have always been people, whatever era they lived in. They liked colourful things, they wrote shopping lists and asked their parents to remember them to their siblings and friends, they cared about keeping up appearances, they found joy in the lives they lived and the things around them, they cursed poor candelight and cats smudging their ink, they left behind marks that mean we know even now that they existed, and they sang and told stories as they worked.
Yeah, sure, wars happened, plagues happened, they didn't have the modcons and knowledge we do now, but that doesn't change that they were people doing what people do.
... I think this is why I like Pratchett, honestly. He acknowledges the way that people will be people, even down to the faults that come of it, but he also acknowledges the funnier side of things, and even the brighter, more hopeful, more optimistic side of things.
But yeah, this is why I can't be having with grimdark.
Undeniably! I don't disagree with you that there's a lot more to life and history than suffering. That's important.
I admit I don't read a whole lot of medieval-esque fantasy. I actually really loved A Song of Ice and Fire for some of the most compelling character writing and political intrigue I've read in fantasy, but it's not my go-to genre. What books are doing it in a grimdark way? I guess I would hardly be surprised if there's that kind of trend-chasing in medievalesque historicalesque second-world fantasy, but I've often found descriptions of being "grimdark" to boil down to "I didn't like it" more than naming a consistent set of traits tbh.
I'm an archaeologist, haha; I definitely know the feeling of connecting with humanity across the centuries and millennia, looking and something and thinking, oh, wow! I do that, or I've seen that, or that's just like us... I study 700 year old pottery, and there's something special about holding a pot that was clearly made by a child, because it looks basically the same as the pinch-pots I made in elementary school art class. It's something that I definitely think people writing in very different times and cultures could stand to remember more, that people inhabited these lives. Making characters feel like real people who really live in this world is a perennial pitfall of second-world sff. That's for sure.
But people being people doesn't just mean being nice and funny and quirky. Like, very often it does mean being selfish or prejudiced or suspicious of people unlike them. Generosity is ubiquitous in humans vultures, and so is violence.
I love Terry Pratchett! I love Discworld! He definitely has one of the sharpest, most sympathetic satirical eyes for modern life, and I love Discworld for that. But the Discworld books are also comedies, and not the be-all end-all of fantasy. I dunno. I kind of get tired, sometimes, of the "people are inherently good actually" discourse of tumblr. I don't believe that. I don't believe people are inherently bad either; I don't believe people are inherently anything other than prone to ingroup/outgroup thinking tbh.
I'm definitely not saying you have to like grimdark fantasy. I don't think anyone has to like any genre. I try not to moralize liking genres. I get a lot of value out of books that feel to me like they're acknowledging that sometimes things really are that bad and sometimes people are mean and you gotta deal with it. I'm not always in the mood for that. Certainly I have plenty of faves that aren't depressing as well (I do love Discworld! I blog about The Murderbot Diaries a Lot!) I'm interested in books that make an attempt to portray the best, most utopian society the author can imagine. I just... also, for example, read Ninefox Gambit at the height of the pandemic when no one knew what was going on and no one knew when there would be a vaccine and there were protests every day being met with police brutality and I was throwing up nearly everything I ate out of anxiety, and the violence and the war and the heavy imperial dystopianness of it calmed my brain down a lot during that time. Because "react badly to plagues" and "violence" are also what people do, and at that time, it resonated to see someone agreeing.

The Jregswap Explanation Post
Hello, it has come to my attention that a lot of people are finding out about this old Jreg AU called Jregswap. And, if you found out about it recently, you don't really have much to go off of for information of it's short lived existence, except for this post which I'm making because of said lack of information)
Before I say the rest I would like to give credit to the main artist of Jregswap, @snalz-artt . Not only did he create the art, without him some of the most important stuff wouldn't have been recovered.
The Jregswap Extremes:
Tumblr media
Here we have the first Reddit post about the concept, posted by the creator. It shows who the four main extremes would be switched with: Extremes who share many characteristics with them but also characteristics of the opposite quadrant. We have:
The Communo-Capitalist: A communist who believes in the creation of Anarcho-Capitalist Free Cities, where the top 1% would be culled regularly. (Based on this video)
The Homo-Fascist: A fascist who believes very strongly in LGBTQ+ rights. (A Centricide character)
The Anarcho-Fascist: An anarchist with extremely rightist views on cultural homogeny, race and identities in general. (A Centricide character but was also conceived in this video)
The Moneytaker: A radical capitalist who corrupts the state to bend to his will. (Based on this video)
Tumblr media
Here's the art of the Swapped Extremes. Again, all art drawn by the person I mentioned at the start.
Tumblr media
Here's some art featuring the leader of these extremes, Guevara Jreg. Snalz sent this to me when I asked him to help with this post.
Tumblr media
Here's a comic the Jregswap team made. A dub of it was also the first Jregswap video ever made so that's cool.
The Jregswap Centrists:
Tumblr media
The centrists in the order of this image are:
The Social Democrat, The Populist, The Centrist, The Neoliberal and The Moderate Conservative.
We never really got to many details on these guys, they seem self-explanatory enough I guess. They also seem to be the ideologies in the most moderate positions of each compass quadrant. Socdem libleft, Populist authleft, Neolib libright and Modcon authright.
None of these characters are based on Jreg characters, except for The Centrist who appeared in The Political Compass Rap at the end.
Tumblr media
Here's an image of Socdem buying a non-binary flag from Geuvara.
The Jregswap Wackies:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the image the creator posted on Reddit explaining the wackies of this universe and the accompanying art.
Guntakers origin
Techprims origin
Ecofascist origin
Anarcho-Nazbol origin
Accelerationist origin (As a note, this idea was conceived before Accelerationism made an appearance in Centricide 8)
Tumblr media
Here's an image of this AU's Nazbol equivalent, The Bleeding Heart Libertarian. Bleeding Heart Libertarians are economically right but culturally left, this idea was conceived of before Jreg had a Pink Capitalist character.
The Jregswap Overtons:
Tumblr media
Here are the moderates, or as they were called in Jregswap, The Overtons!
The (Russian) Reactionary, The Classical Liberal, The Wobblie (Industrial Workers of the World) and the Democratic Confederalist.
Similar to the centrists we never got to much information on these guys, but they are all real movements so whatever.
Tumblr media
And here's Wobblie telling you to join a union.
The Jregswap Videos:
JREGSWAP - ''Homophobic Problems'' [Pilot Episode] https://web.archive.org/web/20200628100030/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRi4sjPDRKU&gl=US&hl=en
JREGSWAP: Know Your Ideologies
Sadly, these are all the videos ever made for Jregswap, though creating an entire alternate history scenario is pretty cool I'd say.
I would again like to thank Snalz, without him I wouldn't have a link to the second Jregswap video.

What a week.
SBO has continued to vomit and apparently he has major swelling at the op site from last week. He’s going to the vet this morning and thank god for technology I’m dialling into the appointment today between meetings.
Had such a lovely dinner which some alternate product Queen Bees last night! As I was walking back to my hotel I realised that as much as I love living far from the madding crowd, it is nice to visit and experience all the modcons of a city!
Finally managed to find a decent hotel where I don’t feel like I’ll catch Ebola every time I take a shower! I can’t shake my tight-arse inclinations, even when work is paying! But moving hotels choice across the track from Haymarket to Surry Hills has proved a good one, much better, plus less of a walk to all my usuals haunts! There’s something nice in revisiting cafes and bars that are still up and running from way back to when I lived here.
Work is full on. There’s some interesting dynamics in my peer level leadership team that has created a spill and an escalation to the exec team yesterday morning. We have a group of 17 people, the only criteria for being part of the group is that you have direct reports. The accountabilities, objectives and outcomes of the group have never been defined. We were given a business KPI to deliver this quarter. There are 5 people out of the 17 who jump in, engage, discuss, debate and participate every time (yes, I’m one of the eager beavers!!) The rest either don’t log in, have their cameras turned off and say nothing, or log in, say nothing then log off early. So the frustrations of carrying the vast majority of the group has surfaced, aided by some breaches of trust within the group. I’ll own it frustrates me (harking back to group work at uni!) where I would do all the work and everyone else would get my marks. It’s the same thing, but I’m not sure this ego/kudos for doing the work is a nice reflection on me. As the CTO pointed out, the exec team knows who is doing the work so what does it matter if the others are still in the group and don’t contribute.
Integrity is word that has been so abused, it’s pretty much lost all meaning!! It when I interact with the 4 other managers in my group I’m trying to stop the whinging and turn it into a “what can we learn”, “what can we do better”, as opposed to “they suck”, “they need to get booted out”. Some part of me doesn’t want to seem like the goodie-two-shoes, but if we have been given an opportunity to be part of a leadership team, isn’t part of that behaving with some kind of restraint?? I mean I get that at the per level, being able to vent and share pain and frustrations is important. But, I guess it’s how you do it and blaming other people is never helpful. I’m trying to channel compassion and curiosity, and encourage them to do the same. As I said, “we all fuck up, it’s just a matter of when. I’d hope that when I do fuckup badly, which I will at some stage, and as some others are doing today, that I’ll be extended the same empathy and support that they would like to be experiencing from us” it’s hard trying to hold myself to some kind of benchmark as well as doing the same for others.
But I did get a very nice shoutout from one of my peers in marketing: “The world, and EzyPay, could do with a lot more Libby’s. You are calm and methodical in your approach to problem solving, and I’m thrilled with the opportunity to learn from you. Thanks Lib!”
It’s nice to be seen!!

@four-leafed-queer-gal @violet-hady
All our houses are old as shit and tiny compared to Americans. We retrofit modcons where we can.
Most kitchens have one free slot under the counter and if you're lucky you get to choose one appliance to go there: dish washer, small fridge, washing machine.
My flat came with a washing machine. And theres a fridge-freezer at the end of the counter.
Plenty of people have their washing machines in their bathrooms cos it's the only other place that has plumbing.
The house my family used to live in had an extension/side passage thing built onto the side for a disabled toilet. We had our washing machine and dryer there. But we were lucky with extra space.
Only the people with enough money to build their own homes have a laundry room here, typically.

Knowing what storms at sea can be like and having been through a hurricane, it always amazes me how these tall structures stood strong despite the storms. I’m not really an ocean person more a lake lover, but lighthouses are beautiful. You could have such a great time redecorating the inside with all the modcons. That and there’s just something about a round room. I suppose you could say a tower would do as well but it isn’t a lighthouse. A tower is just a tower, a lighthouse says ‘I’m here. You move.’
Rooms in a Lighthouse
Although the buildings of lighthouses differ depending on their location and purpose, they generally have common components. However, a distinction must also be made between a lighthouse station consisting of the lighthouse and all the outbuildings such as the lighthouse keeper's house, the fuel house, the boathouse and the building for fog signalling, i.e. a land station, and an inhabited lighthouse as it was found at sea.
Tumblr media
Sections of Bell Rock and Skerryvore Lighthouses, date 1884
Skerryvore is a remote reef that lies off the west coast of Scotland, 12 miles (19 kilometres) south-west of the island of Tiree. Skerryvore is best known as the name given to the lighthouse on the skerry, built with some difficulty between 1838 and 1844 by Alan Stevenson.
The Bell Rock Lighthouse, off the coast of Angus, Scotland, is the world's oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse. It was built between 1807 and 1810 by Robert Stevenson on the Bell Rock (also known as Inchcape) in the North Sea, 11 miles (18 km) east of the Firth of Tay. Standing 35 metres (115 ft) tall, its light is visible from 35 statute miles (56 km) inland.
If you are only dealing with an inhabited tower, you usually have the following rooms in it. Please note that, apart from the lantern room, there is no standardised scheme and the rooms were often arranged differently.
The lantern room is the glazed housing at the top of the lighthouse that contains the lamp and the lens. The glass panes are held in place by vertical or diagonal metal rungs. A lightning conductor and an earthing system, which are connected to the metal roof of the dome, ensure that any lightning strikes are safely discharged.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sections of the Eddystone Lighthouse of 1759 and 1884
Immediately below the lantern room is usually a guard room where fuel and other supplies were stored and where the keeper prepared the lanterns for the night and often kept watch. The clockwork (for turning the lenses) was also located there. On a lighthouse there is often an open platform, the gallery, outside the watchroom (main gallery) or the lantern room (lantern gallery). It was mainly used to clean the outside of the lantern room windows. Below this was a living room, bedroom, possibly a separate kitchen, if not a cooking area was accommodated in the living room. In addition, there were often several storage rooms, an oil room (where the oil for the lantern were storaged) and a coal room. And if you're wondering where the bathroom was - well there wasn't one, there was a wash bowl, possibly a wooden tub for an occasional bath, but rarely, and chamber pots in the bedroom.
Life in a lighthouse at sea was not easy and managed to bring many an old sea dog to his knees. The lighthouse keepers on land had it much easier.

Yeah as an American we use butterface. As in everything is nice but her face. It’s pretty commonly understood though most people don’t actually outwardly say it.
Also I absolutely know that all I want of Lando Norris is his car collection. His taste lines up beautifully with mine. I live right on the edge of a super nice area and have neighbors about 5km or so from me who drive nice cars but they’re all ugly. Like almost exclusively Porsche Cayennes and Range Rovers. And like I drive a Range myself but mostly because I got a good deal and it’s not the standard one which looks SO LONG irl so I can shit on them. No one has creativity or taste. Like at least get a Defender or something fun.
The only one with GOOD cars is my “neighbor” who flys Ferrari flags (tho I have deduced he’s a Carlos fan bc it’s only up when Carlos does good which is wild bc this is the midwestern US) who collects Porsche 911s and Carrera GTs. They’re beautiful and vintage.
Lando’s car collection has such good variety and a great mix between new and vintage. Plus I’ve heard whispers of what car Zak promised to buy him if he wins WDC and I respect that choice too
Damn I have no euphemisms I just say “she’s a 3” 😂
I used to have such tacky taste in cars but I’ve become such a grandma I want a Cullinan, a Ferrari Monza, and a Valkyrie and that’s it.
I like the old boxy range rovers that made you look like a drug dealer with a convoy of bodyguards. The new ones are so meh.
I’m not a vintage car fan though. I need all the modcons in a car otherwise I don’t want it. The 1960s/70s/80s model sports cars just have no appeal to me. Can me a philistine but I don’t think they’re cute in the same way I don’t think Lamborghinis are cute. They just look obsolete.
Iirc Zak promised Lando a Pagani? Or Lando said he will buy one when he wins a championship. I saw a Pagani Zonda once in Lake Como (when I stayed at Taylor Swift villa aka my claim to fame) and it’s gorgeous

I’ve just realized what my problem was with Taylor and Travis’ outfits last night. I thought they looked good but something was off and looking at pictures now I realized that they’re wearing daytime clothing at night. A colorful crochet dress with yellow shoes is not something you usually pick for a night out. This is not hate btw, I just think it’s kind of funny that my brain saw something wrong with those outfits and I didn’t know what but it finally clicked. It looks out of place (to me) because it’s not something people usually choose to go out at night
it felt very cute and modcon like idk I liked her outfit. His not so much and he REALLY needed to lose the hat.
