I’m gonna try to keep this neat and tidy but this might take me a while I’m largely including lots of links because I don’t have the spoons to transcribe this sorry followers.

ok so lets begin with the crux of my complaint, that being Goncharov over took black panther: wf in popularity on tumblr for White reasons. I say this for 2 reasons.

1)  goncharov existed as a meme since 2020 but didn’t overtake tumblr until November 2022.

what was going on in 2019 for the mcu?  avengers 3 and 4 had just come out and it was the biggest thing that had ever happened in the movies. also... black panther the first movie had made history in being the first mcu movie to be nominated in a category other than technical at the oscars and other award shows https://envelope.latimes.com/awards/titles/black-panther/  too.  

so martin scorsese isn’t just against some of the mcu or superhero movies in general (you will remember that heath ledger won the oscar for the dark knight). no he’s against Marvel specifically. and just at the moment that Marvel films were becoming more diverse than ever before. ok I’m not gonna keep harping on how groundbreaking that black panther which features an afrofuturist country in the biggest franchise in the world with a nearly all black cast won so much acclaim.  

this brings to the second issue I have with goncharov

2) goncharov was largely billed as having great slash ships (homoeroticism if you will). but like the rest of Scorsese’s actual works the cast was all white.  there was no interracial ships to be fawned over there was indeed no poc actors cast in this fake film.  but see this is the key thing in november 2022, in the 3 years that had passed between scorsese first comments on the lack of artistry in marvel films several things had happened to the mcu

which brings me to point number 3: the diversity of mcu films had basically expanded on every single phase 4 film.  the whitest film of the phase 4 was black widow but that was directed by a white woman and featured a cast filled with white women. the next whitest movie was spiderman no way home and that still had a diverse supporting cast in ned and MJ.  the third whitest film was doctor strange 2 which was still directed by a Jewish man Sam Raimi. the next whitest film was thor 4 with a Jewish/Maori man Taika directing it and Tessa as King of Asgard, Valkyrie

that leaves Shang-Chi, Eternals, Black panther 2.

All films that centered people of color all films directed by people of color and at least eternals and bp2 both had queer rep. thor 4 had canon trans rep.

like this era of marvel were referred to as “the flop era“ or “the MSheU“ precisely because it was so different from the original 2 phases.  there was intense hate for the diversity and scope of the mcu phase 4 that couldnt be explained by any other fact than the diversity inherent in mcu phase 4.

anyways bp:wf had at its center Black Women, and brown indigenous man as the villain.  but you couldn’t load tumblr without running into like 2 goncharov posts within the first page of your dash. nothing about the artistry of bp:wf tho.

I think what's inherently flawed about thinking tti is mid is that... what else is it supposed to be? it's a total drama season. total drama in itself is not a groundbreaking or fantastic show. it's entertaining and has interesting characters, is funny at points, and has some good dynamics. but it's nothing astounding, and if you think it is I am BEGGING you to expand your viewing pool and maybe watch something else.

but anyway, tti is ultimately a total drama season. it's not supposed to be #oscarworthy. it's supposed to be fun for the mods involved. which most seem to agree it is!

no one here is holding tti to the standards of anything but total drama. and for total drama, it does its job very well! there are cohesive character arcs, TWENTY TWO different and mostly unique characters (which not even fresh has done since the first season), a believable romance, jokes that hit, and a creative spin on each challenge so it's not the exact same as the original. all of this from a guy who has stated he's never written like this before, and DAILY RELEASES at that.

tti is not a cinematic or literary masterpiece, it's total drama fanfiction. and for td fanfic, it's really good! not perfect! but good enough to get a handful of people very involved and dedicated to the show.

I honestly could see this being a total drama season, like an actual season of td with some tweaking. it's believable, its tonally cohesive and more or less as appropriate as the original tdi. I mean, a td nostalgia season with a new cast full of some actual stereotypes of modern teens? I can't imagine that a producer wouldn't jump on that.

tldr: tti isn't a scorsese masterpiece but for total drama it's a perfectly passable season

Bringing up Star Wars again because i also remembered some stream in 2019 where id talked about "how franchise revivals usually lose their identity while Doom retained it" and even Hugo Martin sort of shittalked Disney Star Wars.

The thing is that Doom didn't really "return to the roots" but rather found a formula that works really, really well and if people wanted it to return, that's what the best modding scene is for.

Plus, after TAG2, people got more aware of certain questionable things about the new games, even if i also like to think "you can always fix the Doom lore because it was never there to begin with" and stuff like that.

Doom as a series still deviates from its older entries and even chased some trends, it's more like that the new games prove you don't have to "return to the roots" to make something good.

(specially if "return to the roots" suddenly feels like marketing)

And there's also how people barely take the setting seriously or how many fans became a bit more fanboy-ish, even with all the observations about the fanbase's history etc.

Regardless, the devs have some passion, effort and "authorship" in these games and older fans accepted them enough to even mod them in the old games.

But it's also worth noting: Disney Star Wars is such a mess that most people involved probably hate it.

I remember hearing they had multiple endings for Rise of Skywalker and the one we got was supposed to be the "best recieved" from some test audience.

Someone getting the blame for bringing back a character back.

Story important stuff put in a comic nobody read or Fortnite.

How the middle entry changed director and how that lead to messing up with plans (If there were any).

JJ Abrams even said "fuck it" during some interview about how he would deal with RoS.

The movies had "tighter"/yearly release dates like Call of Duty because they wanted to make Star Wars close to the MCU probably.

Apparently Solo: A Star Wars Story was supposed to be different but Disney or some execs didn't let the directors do the movie the way they wanted it to be originally. (this was also a problem in the MCU).

Maybe one can argue SW was overhyped in pop culture for years.

But people started to either like the prequels ironically or realize that George Lucas still had a vision in them, even if turns out he needed his wife or actors correcting him.

There's also Carrie Fisher and Peter Cushing being CGI revived in the new movies, meaning they even went that far into using the likenesses of dead actors.

Wasn't there also someone complaining about the lack of source material after the decanonization of the expanded universe who was also blamed for a twist in RoS?

I might be misremembering some of this but if i got it all right, then the point is clear: Star Wars became a mess when a lot of fans and even random movie goers don't seem to like anymore.

From Mark Hamill to John Boyega, you get both generations having some actors disliking these movies.

Not because of "difference" or "too much the same" but because it had actual problems that could even be studied in the future.

And rabid fans aside, i feel like i've seen worse from people defending these movies, like the biggest corporation that probably owns the planet somehow needs it.

It reminds me again of what Martin Scorsese actually hated about MCU movies: there's no true "author" becase at the end of the day, it's more on an exec/company product.

Doom is owned by ZeniMax and then MS and with all the issues around those companies, the series' state isn't bad even if there's also awful stories like what happened to Mick Gordon.

I guess in someway the comments of "just pop corn but with some nutrition to it" make sense in some way.

I also recall Hugo Martin saying "we read even the mean comments because that means you're still passionate" even if there's a difference between an actual nerd with passion that sounds angry and typical NPC-ish online countrarianism with no input or thought.

I just have to articulate that my frustrations surrounding Killers of the Flower Moon is because of shit like this. My frustrations with Scorsese being given opportunities by studios to make films with poc narratives that people of color dont get, with Scorsese's entitlement thinking he should be directing this film about a real life crime that happened to Native Americans, that Scorsese should have just used his clout to uplift Native American filmmakers, that White pple only want to see stories about Native Americans (same goes for stories of people of color in general) when it's depicted by White pple.

10. I was wondering if anyone knew of any fics where the “XianXian is three!” joke isn’t so much a joke than it is a coping mechanism for Wei Wuxian’s time on the streets? I don’t mean those DD/LL/Caregiver/little or whatever it’s called type of fics (no shame to those type of fics! It’s just not what I am looking for) but a fic that kind of delves into the kind of trauma that a toddler living alone on the streets might develop? After flipping through the Wikipedia list of Batman’s extended rogues—yes that’s how I spent my evening—personally if I wanted to tell the story of the Penguin as an up-and-coming criminal I’d make him start out as a low-level member of the Royal Flush Gang as they’re being absorbed into Bruno Mannheim’s Intergang, which for the time being is just a gang truce to take down Batman, whose example is encouraging Gotham PD to clean up its corruption problem. He doesn’t like the vibe and follows Marsha, formerly the Royal Flush Gang’s Queen of Diamonds, to strike out on their own, starting by seizing the territory of a small gang run by a weird old man called the Ventriloquist. Should be a pushover, right?

Honestly I love the idea of this one guy that thinks he’s a Martin Scorsese character but when he interacts with other criminals they’re, like, the Wonderland Gang and Colonel Blimp and an autistic teenager whose special interest is applying military tactics to gang warfare and any of Gotham’s multiple canonical circus gangs (who I assume have rivalries with one another). The Gorilla Gang openly uses hologram generators in their heists but everyone assumes it’s to put gorilla masks on the members during the robberies instead of to put human masks on them before and after to hide the fact that Gorilla Boss is raising funds for Gorilla Grodd (and Mod Gorilla Boss is a totally separate character that fights Animal Man). There’s hints that the characters are fully aware of, ya know, the Amazons and Superman and “yeah turns out Atlantis is real” and “ya heard there’s life on Mars” and “Bruno Mannheim kidnapped some mathematicians because his alien boss wants a math problem that kills people”, and the main characters are just like “yeah well fugeddaboutit, we got a bank to rob”

Why do so many Batman adaptations of the past few decades focus so heavily on Carmine Falcone and/or Sal Maroni. Are people really watching things set in Gotham City hoping to hear more about the completely mundane Italian-American crime families???

“But I want to make a grounded crime drama without letting weirdo personalities overwhelm the story” well then why the fuck are you setting it in the craziest city in one of the widest craziest universes. If you want to do a knockoff Godfather Goodfellas Sopranos just fucking DO THAT and stop tying it to the same continuity as the Riddler and Lobo and Gentleman Ghost and Doom Patrol and Dogwelder and Mod Gorilla Boss and that tank that’s possessed by the ghost of a Confederate general and that sentient planet that is a superhero. In comics continuity, organized crime turned out to be a cult as a front for Darkseid, Overlord of Planet Apokolips, to invade Earth. That’s the mafia story I want to see from a Sopranos knockoff set in Gotham City.
