Hi there! I just found your Tumblr while googling “Yellowjackets” and “ableism”, and I’m so glad I did. I’m a podcaster/Youtuber who covered Yellowjackets. My podcast was one of the most popular, always falling between the first and fourth spots in the charts. Unfortunately, I’ve experienced such severe ableism from the Yellowjackets fandom, that I

A) was diagnosed with PTSD from my experience

B) started getting regular panic attacks for the first time in my life.

C) tried to self-delete

D) had to step down from my podcast, while the pod that started the ableist harassment continues to gain from what they copied and stole from me.

Every day is a struggle for me to survive through this, so finding other spoonies who have been hurt by their fandom experiences is a huge deal to me. I’m glad I found you and I look forward to exploring your Tumblr further!

First of all, so glad this blog helps you. It helped for me too.

I am not in the Yellowjackets fandom, and only very vaguely know what is it about, but oh boy do I relate to the experience of being in an extremely ableist fandom to the point of harming my mental health.

Sadly don't really have any tips other than documenting all of the ableist harassment so that, as soon as the ableists try to gaslight you into thinking it wasn't that bad and it was not actually ableist, you have recites. And finding other disabled people in the fandom.

But I sadly still have not found a way to bring justice to the fandom, or even just make the majority understand just how harmful and bigoted this behavior is. I hate how always the most bigoted and abusive people get the biggest. If anyone has, please comment.

If it makes you feel lesser alone, I was and still am in the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power fandom, which always brags about being so progressive, so spoilers, they aren't. At all. Quite a lot of them are also ragingly biphobic, and quite a lot inhaled TERF ideology without any reflection, but that is another issue. (Now talking a lot about my own experience is not meant to take the focus off you, but rather as showing you that you are not alone with your experience).

This show has three canonically disabled characters, all villains (spoilers: Quite many of the crew are ableists too and refused to protect the disabled people in the fanbase, or even indirectly encouraged the harassment, even if they, too, also brag so often about how progressive they are).

One is, as much as I love that manipulative bastard, just about everything you can do wrong with face difference rep; a elf woman who had a dark magic spell she tried to do for the greater good backfire and caused her scars all over her body, she now wears a mask because she is intensely insecure about her scars, and she became first officer of the villains. But the other two are some of the best representation I ever saw - still big flaws, but compared to the garbage one usually sees - and they actually have a romance with each other. This was the first disabled4disabled romance I ever saw in any media I know, not just genre media.

They are Entrapta, an autistic woman with a knack for engineering and chaos, who defected to the villains because the good guys thought she was dead, but also really because how badly they treat her. And Hordak, a former clone slave with an unspecified but fairly explicit muscular atrophy and cardio-vascular issue, and also intense religious trauma. Yeah, he wears sci-fi armor to deal with that, which is not the best of tropes because of how far removed from reality for people with these disabilities this is, but also his self-hate and insecurities and how desperately he tries to hide his disability and how his slave master/cult leader but also even people in his own army abuse him for that... I can see myself in him so much.

And they not just bond about being the evil scientists of the evil army, but also about the ableism they faced, encouraging each other to get more confident about themselves, helping with things their disabilities make hard for them, and reassuring each other that they are worthy the way they are, flaws and disability and all. It is so touching.

Most of the fandom was, and to an extend, but most of the bullies got bored and moved on, furious about this. They tried to wrap it into social justice language, as they always do. This is pedophilia, Entrapta is a child/has the mind of a child/can't understand what she is doing. Hordak is a gross old man (because we all know all people with physical disabilities are all old people...), he is manipulating and abusing her. Ewww this is so cishet (Entrapta is canonically bi and Hordak literally wears a dress and makeup and was thrown out his cult, beside his disability, for choosing his own name, and their dynamic is very gender role subverting), Entrapta is actually aroace, shipping villains means you support colonialism... It was absolutely obvious this was about ableism, but if you called them out on this, they tried to gaslight you into "you are just to sensitive".

They constantly harassed the shippers, who almost exclusively are disabled and/or queer, also quite a few POC, to the point where seeing some ableist shit take happend daily, if I was lucky even several times a day. Faked callout posts for being a racist (liking Hordak, and fighting back against a bully who happens to be not white), a pedophile (shipping an adult autistic woman with an adult man), lesbiphobic (not focusing solely on the fan favorite lesbian ship), a colonizer (liking Hordak)... But they didn't even stop there, there are the ever present hate anons, but also deliberately triggering people, suicide baiting and death threats.

I hate admitting just how much this harmed me, because at least one of these bullies regularly stalked my blog - hope she has given up by now but honestly with that level of creep-ness I would not be surprised if she still does it - despite me blocking her, but this was just... so awful. Seeing how for most of the fandom, I should not have rights, I should not be able to choose for myself, I am not an actual human person, my sexuality is not valid but gross, I should not be in this fandom.

I feel bad that this gets to me this much, it is just online and it is just fandom - but it still hurts. Some days I only didn't left the fandom out of spite and because it is very unlikely I would find such good disabled for disabled rep again in the next time.

I definitely have trauma from this, and also from another ableist fandom that wasn't quite as obviously ableist, but it did swung by in the background, even if for me it luckily isn't quite PTSD.

Trauma from online harassment and fandom is valid. These experiences are real, no matter what the abusers and mainstream say about this.

I am so glad this blog exists to fight back and inform, or at least show disabled people in fandom that they are not alone. This is actually why I joined, despite being a bit worried about not having the spoons for this.

I am sure many of the other Mods have experiences like this too, feel free to chime in. Maybe you even have better strategies to deal with it.

Ah, I also made two (by now rather old) videos about this issue on my Youtube channel, because I was so enraged and desperate. They are just about the She-Ra fandom, but maybe they still help? Idk, feel free to ignore them if not interested or too triggering or something...

The Narcissistic Abuse Believer To New Age/Alt-Right Conspiracy Theorist Pipeline

Let’s say that you are an abuse survivor. Let’s say that you had an abusive parent and/or ex. Let’s say you’re looking for support for abuse survivors, and a lot of the things you’re finding reference the concept of narcissistic abuse. You read more on the topic and begin to identify with a lot of what narcissistic abuse is supposed to be. You think to yourself “yes! this is exactly what I went through!” You research more about narcissists, how to spot them, what makes them tick, all the ways in which they would use and abuse you. You may not even know that NPD is a real disorder. You may not realize that narcissists are, more often than not, survivors of abuse just like you. Maybe you’re just genuinely misinformed. Maybe you just don’t care. A lot of people are here on the pipeline. Granted, this is not a good place to be (nowhere on the pipeline is) as it’s still incredibly harmful to pwNPD, but this is only the beginning.

Enter the Empath. The empath is allegedly a figure who experiences great empathy and compassion and, in turn, seeks to help others. They are generally portrayed as a kind and loving figure. Likewise, the Narcissist is the opposite. They’re evil manipulative abusers who only seek out vulnerable people to hurt, while not caring about the needs or feelings of others. You’ve been doing research for a while, and so you obviously know about the Empath. Let’s say you’ve internalized this idea that the Empath and the Narcissist are juxtaposed figures. Now, let’s take it a step further and say you’ve begun to believe that they have supernatural powers and that they use these powers for good/evil depending on their alignment. Let’s even say that you believe there’s a war going on between the two, that the empaths have to stop the narcissists from enacting their evil onto the world.

Supernatural powers like:

One very important thing we need to understand is that in New Age belief, The Empath and The Narcissist are two very particular figures that play a role in the belief system. To them, it’s not a disorder, it’s something else entirely. You might have noticed that the way some people talk about narcissists is wrapped up in spiritual, new agey language. Many years ago, I came across a YouTube channel that, in hindsight, was very new agey and ableist. I go back to that channel and what is the second video I see?

And if we go down a little further?

Spiritual language. Comparing us to demons, claiming we’re here to sabotage people on their (likely spiritual) paths. That is what a narcissist is in New Age belief. Empaths are here to do good and narcissists are here to do evil.

Now here’s where we get to the good part. If you reject the inherent truth that anyone has the capability of choosing to be a good or bad person, and instead believe that there’s a group of people sent here to do good and a group of people sent here to do evil, then I honestly don’t believe you’re too far off from believing in Starseeds vs Reptillians.

Starseeds are a concept founded in fascism, antisemitism, and white supremacy. It is believed that there is an ongoing spiritual war between the starseeds and the Reptillians, a group said to have been secretly running various organizations on Earth for thousands of years (sound familiar?) The starseeds want to help the Earth ascend to a new age, 5D, the Age of Aquarius, whatever you want to call it, while the Reptillians essentially want to keep that from happening. Honestly, just replace empaths with starseeds and narcissists with Reptillians and it’s pretty much the exact same thing. To New Agers, there’s practically no difference. And once you’ve made it to New Age territory, you might as well be knocking on the alt-right’s door.

There’s so much more about starseeds and Reptillians, and honestly New Age in general, that I just can’t fit into this post, but if you want to learn more, creature-wizard is a good blog with a lot of resources on the subject. I understand that it’s fun to joke about the ridiculous things people say about us (demons and such) but it’s also important to recognize how deeply dangerous narcissistic abuse rhetoric is, and that it leads to nowhere good for anyone. New Age ideology has always been ableist and eugenicist, and it’s been talked about how “starseed signs” are just autistic/ADHD traits, but I feel like the anti narc ableism also needs to be acknowledged. I’ll leave off with this:

If you genuinely believe in narcissistic abuse, then you are on this pipeline. Think long and hard about whether or not this is really where you want to be

While this is not how prostheses are "anchored" or work these days, as far as I can tell as an able-bodied person Laurents portrait does not fall in any of the other pitfalls amputees in sci-fi usually fall under

(he does take his prostheses off, they need maintenance and there are situations where they don't work, and they are not an one on one replacement for his arm and legs... His leg prostheses even do work with suction sockets just like todays do.)

CVF fights and who seems to be able to beat who if caught in friendly fire

Putting a spoiler curtain over so it isn't taking up a huge chunk of screen unless you want to read

Basically what the tins got printed. While I try to rotate for a smaller group, sometimes my LDBs (mostly Ieama) has 8 people trudging along behind. When everyone aggros on a wolf the chances of someone NOT hitting a ally is never zero. There's been enough fights that I can figure who can beat who in a fight, tie with, or otherwise has a fluctuating score going. I’ve compiled more or less how the followers I currently have fare against each other in those fights. Now this is all based off of fights in my game, so if they are better in someone else's, I'll raise a glass for ' 'em!

Val: Spellswords are devastating. Pirates play dirty. Being both means he's not an easy opponent. He can take Redcap and Auri most times (unless Auri is far enough and has a clear shot she can take him out before his spells can reach her, while Redcap is a fast little friend and dodges his spells well). He hasn't fought Remi, though I think its just luck on that part, and it’s fluctuating with Tally and Xelzaz (I figure them to be a strategic lot, along with Nebarra), Gore has beat him down more than he’s won (their fighting lines really make for a scene) and he has yet to start shit with Nebarra, so we don't know yet if he would win or not. I'm thinking he'd lose though.

Auri: A very good archer indeed, she doesn't miss much, and constantly moves and creates distance between her and whoever messes with her. Can take down Nebarra and Redcap (the former usually isn't fast enough to get into close combat, and she has wicked aim when she's mad). She has not been in a fracas with Gore or Remi (by sentiment or luck I'm not sure) while Val, Tally and Xelzaz and can go toe to toe so the win/lose ratio is fluctuating. Generally, she fights the last three as an aid to someone else. Her taunts and fight lines about her eating her enemies hearts might also add a touch of fear into most of her opponents too. (Also, she keeps shooting me but I usually front line enemies, so, well call it an accident)

Gore: Generally, once he's set to beat someone's face clean through their ass he's not stopping, and will shrug off whatever is thrown at him to get the job done. He can and will fuck up Val, Xelzaz, Tally and Redcap if they hit him, (the first two have had wins, but Gore has beaten them more, the latter two... tried at least, but only managed once each) but he will get cut to ribbons if he pisses off Nebarra. He can adapt or overcome different opponents in close combat very well with his chosen weapon, and seems to have different approaches to each opponent. He will not hurt Auri or Remiel though. Not sure if he’s just never gotten aggro’d on those two or vise versa, if there’s a implemented code to keep him from going berserk on em, or he’s uniquely aware Auri will eat him should she kill him and just decided to Not Do That and Remi is, in his words, like a little sister so he wont hurt her no matter what, but he’s yet to fight them.

Remi: She generally gets people with a combo of skill and teamwork, and is pretty resourcful, Scrap helping out is also a given. Has beaten Xelzaz but apologized profusely, almost beat Redcap but stopped herself, and tried Nebarra but it, didn't go well. Most time if she is hit someone jumps in to help (Scrap automatically, but Gore also jumps in, and he can smoke quite a few folks in the party). She hasn't attacked Gore, Auri or Val, as of right now, BUT has had a near 10 minute long knock out drag down fist fight with Tally on a mountain in the Rift that ended in a tie and I’m waiting for round two to see who wins. They've yet to re-instigate the fight since. Scrap helped but she held her own very well without him after he was ejected quite suddenly from the fight.

Tally: He lasts a longer in a fight with people than other combinations, win or defeat. I chalk it up to him being used to close combat, working in and out of groups, and his experience in the Great war. Him and Nebarra are long time contenders and he’s won by both scrape of luck and strategy, has fought Xelzaz well and won more (only recently, not by much though). He got folded by Gore a lot when we first found him, still gets folded on the occasion, and he's only had one win against him. Auri has head shot him more than I can count but ultimately they are fluctuating, and Remi and him have had no winner but the longest fight I’ve ever seen between followers without one or the other falling. Neither were downed and I am waiting for the next one with concern and excitement.

Xelzaz: That Telvanni's stray firebolts have started a lot of fights. But as a good poisoner and a well taught wizard, he's got a good standing with most combatants. He has won some fights (Nebarra if he’s not right next to him immediately, Auri he has surprising good aim on though they are more or less equal) he can contend with Val and Tally for a bit, situational on who loses more, but apologizes to Remi and Redcap if he starts something with them, though he's been downed by Redcap. Gore I think has the drop on him with heavy steel and fast reflexes and the general bullheaded determination that affords pushing through being actively burnt and poisoned by Xel’s spells and weapons, so Xelzaz loses a fair bit more with him.

Redcap: Small body, big determination. He has beaten Gore, once. It was in Bleak Fall and he had 4 spears launched at him before he got close enough to hit Redcap, after which he made short work of the fight. He has had fights with him since but Gore is not an easy fight and gets the win now. Tally is his most recent win, (I got hit in the crossfire in that one), and he has taken Xelzaz down a few times but does stop the fight usually before that, same with Remi, if it happens at all. He’s been skewered by Auri, her aim is pretty damn good despite his small stature and speed, and he does damn well against Nebarra but ultimately loses (Nebarra usually gets him from behind first for some reason). Val can contend and win sometimes but hes small and VERY good at dodging Val's lightning. He also has skewered me and I and pretty sure I have died from a spear and low health combo once, so I’ll give that to him.

Nebarra is a vicious, embittered veteran of the Great war and it shows. Gore is often down in seconds, Remi taken off guard faster than you can say Dwemer, Redcap didn’t know what the Oblivion hit him, pretty sure Val hasn’t fought him only out of some begrudging respect for his skills. Regardless of these wins, him and Xelzaz have an Equal standing score more or less. Auri and Tally though are the closest thing to HR intervention to his not-so-appropriate comments on other races, but even then, those are hard won fights on their side. He's an old soldier doing whatever it takes to survive. This mer does not pull punches.

Finally, Scrap has taken down Gore, Auri, Xelzaz, Val, Redcap and a two of Xelzaz’s flame Atronachs, and they’ve all only fought him once ish to a completion. (the rest were stopped before his intervention) He attempted to aid Remi with her and Tally’s throw down but was blasted off the cliff by a well-placed ice spike. So, technically, Tally has probably the most wins against scrap in the group. But in conjunction with that, Scrap is the best fighter based on ratio of wins vs loses.

Ieama is one who has seen the most of these fights, and mostly let them resolve with a win before intervening. She is of the idea that beating the Oblivion out each other builds character and strengthens relationships. She is also a firm believer of 'talk shit, get hit' in Nebarra's case.

Disabled Representation Has Come Farther Than You Think

You’ve Just Been Conditioned Not to See It.

I recently got into a huge fight with an abled friend about disabled representation, in which he was completely convinced that the stance he held was that of an ally. He’s a long time friend of mine and I know he really did think he was fighting for us and coming from a place of trying to help us.

And it really got me thinking about the way abled people perceive disabled people. And how that message is internalised and reinforced in so many ways.

My friend was trying to say that characters like Cyborg, Misty knight, Daredevil, Toph, Edward Elric, Bucky, Nebula, etc were not good representation. And he at first refused to listen to me (an actual disabled person) when I was like; no, we like that. we love that. we LOVE seeing badass and competent and sexy disabled people. It’s validating and empowering.

His argument was that it didn’t really count because nobody saw them as disabled and that it would be the same thing as saying Gamora is black representation.

While I understand where he was coming from, both of us also being black, it was hard to get him to understand how it wasn’t the same thing.

Gamora is a black actress painted green to portray a green-skinned alien. She has black features, yes, but within the narrative she very much is not a black woman. She’s an alien.

But a disabled character is always still a disabled character. Regardless of how high tech or SciFi or magical or fantastical the world or universe is; an amputee with a prosthesis is still an amputee. They are still disabled. Yes, even if their prosthesis shoots lasers.

And other characters, like Toph and Daredevil, who are both blind, have superpowers/superhuman abilities that allow them to overcome their disability. That does not make them less disabled.

Their blindness still impacts their everyday lives. They can’t read. They can’t draw. They don’t know what things or people look like, or what color things are. They can’t read someone’s facial expressions during a conversation. They can’t follow a map without assistance.

When I asked my friend for examples of what he considered good disabled representation he said Professor X, Oracle, and the Thinker. And that made me pause and I won’t lie, it upset me. It felt degrading. I got kind of angry at him and it got a little heated.

Because what he was saying is: the smart one in the wheelchair that never actually joins the battle because their body is too frail? Those are the only good disabled characters? The ones who still need to be protected and treated tenderly and are physically weaker?

Do we only exist when you can view us as some subhuman lesser other that you can take pity on?

But it’s not only my friend who thinks this way.

I’ve seen quite a few arguments online about people who don’t think Edward Elric is disabled, despite being an amputee.

Who don’t think Cyborg is disabled, despite the fact that his entire power set is due to a life support and mobility aid device.

And my friend was shocked that I, and many other disabled people, find these depictions of strong and confident and capable disabled people empowering. He fully expected that I would find those depictions offensive.

And that’s when it really hit me.

The issue is not that characters like Bucky or Toph or Daredevil are bad representations of disabled characters.

The issue is that people don’t perceive them as disabled. They’ve internalized this belief that disabled people have to be weak and delicate and fragile and in some way physically inferior.

They’re only considered disabled if they’re tragic and/or weak. Or ugly. People love to project a tragic subhuman otherness onto disabled people who are ugly.

If they’re cool and badass that confuses them. That doesn’t fit with the narrative that’s been built in their heads.

The idea of a competent, confidant, and strong disabled character, especially a cool disabled character is just so completely foreign to them that they don’t even consider it.

Now I’m not saying that depictions of disabled characters like Oracle or professor X are bad or harmful. We need representation of disabled people who aren’t strong and don’t have superpowers and maybe don’t feel particularly empowered. That’s a genuine representation of many disabled people.

It just isn’t the only one.

I think the issue with disabled representation is not that it doesn’t exist (as I’ve seen many abled people online claim in our defense) but that we need to shift the way we think of disabled people so we stop overlooking a lot of the really cool and badass and awesome disabled characters we do already have.

So if you read this far through this essay, please stop for a moment and consider the preconceptions you have about disabled people.

Have you ever overlooked a disabled character because they were strong, powerful, charismatic, or, (God forbid!) SEXY?

And if so, I’d ask you to take some time to examine in yourself why you don’t think of disabled people as being able to be those things.

Long time, but I'm able to play again and miss my elf. I have some questions

1: what other followers does he have interactions with?

2: would he react to being given azihdals boots of waterwalking? I really wanna help him with his water problem.

I agree, we are very much overdue for interactions with other modded followers. Unfortunately the wait will have to continue.

Right now we're working on a huge update for Taliesin.

There will be new faces and voice talents.

We're making tweaks to Taliesin's introduction to make him less aggressive upon first impressions.

Some lines might be removed, others might be rewritten and revoiced.

Once all that is done, my focus is getting those interactions done. It is going to take a lot of work. ;__;

And no, he doesn't have a response for those boots. Not yet, at least.
