Minnesota has had a booming decade for local beer. That boom is the result of legislation that has allowed breweries additional revenue streams like tap rooms and take-out sales. Well, with the lockdown, those revenue streams are drying up.

It’s National Beer Lover’s Day! In honor of this truly fine beverage we thought we’d share a landmark piece of Minnesota legislation for any beer lover. 

While it may not be a old as some laws, or materials that have been highlighted in this blog, the 2011 Minn. Stat. 340A.301 Subd. 6(b) has had a tremendous impact on the state’s relationship with beer. Better known as the ‘Surly Bill,’ it allowed municipalities to issue taproom licences for the on-site sale, and consumption of beer produced on the premises. This may not seem like much, but for the brewery business (especially small producers) it has meant that the numbers of breweries operating in the state have jumped from 24 in 2010, to 118 represented at the MN State Fair in 2017, and over a billion dollars a year in sales. Not to shabby

Doesn't this thing look phenomenal!? Earlier this year @portagebeer lost their facility in a fire. Before that point they were brewing excellent beers that bordered the line between experimentation and quality that few others matched. I certainly miss seeing their gorgeous beers in my feed and I anxiously await the day they return. That's why I donated to their #rebuildportage campaign and I'm urging my followers to do they same! I love autumn, particularly autumn festivals! As soon as the state fair finishes up, I'm in the kitchen. Casseroles, bread, pies! And what could go better with the Bavarian-style pretzel recipe I'm refining than a lovely, local marzen?
