I'll accept the statue scene for what it tells us about how Adrien likes Mari and accepts her no matter how cringe she is but I ain't accepting the writers claiming it was THE moment he started liking her romantically it is nonsense

every scene where the miraculous theme song plays in minor, french version, because no one can stop me

while i was making this i discovered some fascinating differences between the french and english dubs i'd never noticed before.

for some reason, music seems to play a key higher in french. this is interesting, but it makes sense until you get to re-cr��ation and realize the version with english subtitles and french audio is somehow still different to the version with no subtitles and french audio.

first, with english subtitles, the music starts earlier, when adrien blushes for the first time. in french, it only starts after marinette tells adrien he is the only one who who can decide what to make of his life and he smiles.

with english subtitles, there are some bell-like synths which enter before adrien says he feels free. in french, these synths are not present until afterward, and the orchestra swells on adrien's line.

with english subtitles, the music crescendoes when adrien and marinette kiss. in french, the music has already been crescendoing, and after they kiss it stops. a sadder piano rendition with a single violin comes in during the following shots before fading out.

in both versions, the music during re-création is different to the music in all prior scenes, which were identical. it seems to have been remixed for the finale.

both versions are tragic, but the french version has a softer sort of melancholy.

Marinette Traumatized & Could Have Been Killed. Well since you hate Chloe, want to Cataclysm Kim (and somehow ignore the filmer Sabrina who loved the smoke).

Allow me to deride your wah I despise Chloe, I want Marinette protected from what isn't Sabrina or SockayLEAN (or shippers for Adrien and Marinette that's not Andre Glacier) or how you're like Kim had the rejection coming all of a sudden from messy Flashback etc. crap.

Marinette did the same thing. She could have killed Adrien and or mostly Kagami and herself. Different purpose similar outcome. Could have became a trauma causer (I guess again but whatever).

Funny thing. Hating Alya for being pushy for Adrienette and boundary disrespect.

Marinette doing that on Kagami who no longer is interested for the Kagadriemn she's forcing against her.

Girl straight up caused a distraction against Adrien's bodyguard just to sneak her and Kagami to a private session, ruining Adrien's session for shipping nonsense.

So do talk about Mr Pigeon 72 since you wish to be so concerned from Derision.

Notice how things ironically look worse on the protagonist end?

Scratch that, Ladybug is the PROANTAGONIST :)

It's really, really worth noting that Marinette thought she was alone, talking to an inanimate object, specifically because Adrien had decided to deliberately pretend to be an inanimate object. Acting cringe at inanimate objects (which Marinette sincerely thought she was doing) isn't a crime. And, like, yeah, she shouldn't be touching and potentially damaging the wax statues, but that'd be like... mild vandalism, not an inappropriate interpersonal interaction. (Also, apparently Adrien's statue has repeatedly gotten actual pieces cut from it by over-invested fans. Which is, of course, also unadvisable, but. Yeah.)

It is also really worth noting that people routinely objectify Adrien much like this when he's just existing in public and not willingly pretending to be an inanimate object. Marinette at least stopped doing it and was mortified as soon as it became clear that it was the real Adrien, not a statue.

It's cringe comedy, which is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but they both had fairly innocent intentions, their cringe ideas just just combined in a... memorable way. They apologised not because they were actually trying to do anything horrible to each other, but because the situation just kinda turned out deeply embarassing, for reasons neither of them foresaw.

I need to talk about the statue scene in Puppeteer 2. It reeks of rated-G SA and Adrien went into fawning trauma mode when Marinette got upset. Like bro, she felt you up, pulled your hair, and kissed you without your consent. And Adrien is the one who apologizes for it. And that’s when Astruc decided Adrien should fall in love with Marinette. Unbelievable.

To be fair, that's typical for the humor of this show. It's not supposed to be taken seriously. That's why I don't really consider Marinette being a stalker or anything like that an actual criticism of her character. It's just part of the exaggerated humor of the show and it's not supposed to be literal. That scene really isn't meant to be serious. Marinette really thought he was a statue, and Adrien realized the joke backfired and apologized because the situation was awkward. It wasn't really a big deal. It was played for laughs more than anything. It's completely understandable to find it distasteful, but it's not meant to be serious and doesn't really reflect on the characters imho.

That being said, your point does work when we talk about the episode overall. The episode started with Adrien calling his friends over because he was lonely, but it ended up focusing on Marinette anyway. I didn't really like that, because it's just another instance of the narrative not being able to not make it about Marinette again. And yeah, it's so strange how they made that the scene where Adrien fell in love with Marinette, and not, I don't know, the umbrella scene 2.0. It's one of the retcons that is clearly made to justify all the criticisms fans have of the show. Marinette is a stalker? It's because of trauma! The statue scene was weird? Sike, that's when Adrien actually fell in love with Marinette! Even though the episode where it happened showed them both being super weirded out and ended with Adrien talking about his love for another girl with no hint whatsoever that he began to view Marinette in a different light since then. But yeah, that's when he started to like her. Suuuuure.

ALYANETTE!! i feel like it's really easy to reduce alya to the adrienette cheerleader in works, which like, yeah, she IS, but i really wish we saw more of what an INCREDIBLE friend she is. idk, maybe im biased because my best friend is literally my irl alya, but can we please appreciate that the only reason alya is 'pushy' is because she KNOWS how upset marinette gets by HER OWN anxieties getting in her way? alya literally pushes marinette because she WANTS marinette to chase after what she wants, she WANTS marinette to have confidence that she DESERVES the things she wants. and it's hard to see that pre-reveal since there are a lot of factors she still couldn't see, but what about mr pigeon 72, when alya was the one to realise that ladybug could quite literally do whatever her imagination allowed? that her only limit was herself? doesn't it say so much that ALYA was the one to so quickly realise that all marinette needed to do was believe in herself?

miracle au: when in canon does afo kill gabriel? in miraculous canon, I mean. like after stoneheart 2 or after a few more akumas?

The canon ML timeline is absolutely fucked. I think it's supposed to have been like 6 months but Mr. Pigeon has been a thing at least 72 times. It doesn't help that they aired Season 1 out of order. I'm not sure what they'd have faced in the one week Hawk Moth was alive

Ml plot point: Hawkmoth is not trying particularly hard with any individual akuma. Since it takes less effort on his part to make them that it does for LB and CN to fix them, he just keeps making them often enough to mess up their social lives and stress them out. Eventually they WILL make a mistake and lose. He can lose 1000 times, but he only needs one win and it's over. This does get rid of the "Curse you Lady the Bug-ypus" rant after every akuma defeat, but it gives him an actual strategy.

Oh yeah absolutely that's why, as ridiculous as it sounds, making Mr. Pigeon 72 times isn't that insane of an idea.

Rewatching ML Season 4

Truth: Luka is fed up with Marinette lying to him. Ladybug is put under a truth spell and says that she appreciates Chat Noir’s courage, confidence and jokes. Chat Noir says he’s only that happy with her.

Lies: Marinette watches TV program about Adrien and says his life is awesome, even though sometimes he looks bored or sad. Adrigami scenes. Kagami wants to draw Adrien and says that neither his model poses nor Chat Noir pose is really him. She wants him to be more natural and vulnerable. A few times they almost kiss, but Adrien has to go to help Ladybug. Kagami is fed up with Adrien’s lies. More: Luka vs Adrien and Kagami vs Ladybug. Chat Noir sacrifices himself again.

Gang of Secrets: Ladybug and Chat Noir go to the cinema. Ladybug is frustrated with her love life and doesn’t want to talk about it neither with Chat Noir nor her friends. Marinette is fed up with lying and finally tells Alya that she’s Ladybug.

Mr Pigeon 72: Adrien brought Plagg a big bag full of cheese. He’s “lucky” his father is neglectful, otherwise he would take him to psychologist. Marinette, why are you so stupid (again). Adrien is turned into a pigeon. Adrien is so focused on Marinette that he hits his head when getting in the car.

Furious Fu: —

Sole Crusher: Hi, Zoé. Marinette is short with Chat Noir like Ladybug.

Queen Banana: Chloé wants to be a film star. Adrien wants her to apologise, but she refuses.

Guiltrip: Adrienette moment, Adrien makes googly eyes at Marinette. There’s a pink background, but it’s hard to say if it’s just Marinette who sees her friend this way—it looks like Adrien does too! He comforts Juleka. Chat Noir tries to kill himself. Adrien mocks Chloé.

Optigami: Marinette and Adrien are stuck together in the lift during Akuma attack and they almost reveal themselves.

Rocketear: Nino thinks Alya’s in love with Chat Noir. Nino tells Adrien that he and Alya are superheroes. Adrien is taken aback that Ladybug let them know their true identities and is worried that Ladybug doesn’t trust him. Nino says Ladybug thinks Chat Noir is disgusting. Adrien is sad during transformation.

Wishmaker: Adrien doesn’t know what he wants to do in the future and says he’s a model now just because his father asked told him to. Marinette and Luka notice Adrien is sad. Adrien again makes googly eyes at Marinette. Luka learns Ladybug and Chat Noir’s true identities. Adrien says that as a child he wanted only to fulfill his parents’ wishes.

Mega Leech: Adrien is shocked to see that his father lied to him about the advertisment. Gabriel treats Adrien’s image as his possession. Adrien is sad and angry. He takes Marinette’s hand during the protest. Chat Noir is possessed by the villain. Adrien notices Marinette is fascinated with the advertisment and isn’t sure what to make of it. Gabriel is angry at Adrien for joining the protest and sends him to his room, touching the wedding ring.

Simpleman: Adrien calls Marinette and asks her to fix a wing that he needs for a photo session. When I watched this for the first time, I thought he genuinely needed her help, but now I think he uses this as an excuse to see her (this isn’t his job to find somebody to fix the wing). Ladybug and Chat Noir almost give the villain their Miraculouses in exchange for sweets.

Dearest Family: Where did Gabriel get the amulet from? I guess my Disney+ has the wrong order of the episodes again. Tikki has an eating disorder. We can see a glimpse of her true form. Gabriel’s talking about destroying the old world and creating a new one, but I don’t think he’s the best source of information about how the wish works.

Crocoduel: Congratulations, Gabriel, Jagged Stone who abandoned his children for years is a better father than you. Chat Noir flirts with every new girl in the team.

Glaciator 2: Ladybug is angry at Chat Noir for his constant declarations of love and throws him in the garbage. Adrien decides to change. He’s sad and cries in the park. Marinette unsuccessfully tries to cheer him up. Gabriel almost sends an Akuma to Adrien, but when he notices it’s his son he stops the Akuma. Gabriel tries to talk to Adrien, but their conversation isn’t going anywhere. Chat Noir is destroying the billboards. How much cheese has he had to take with him? He doesn’t have any bag with him, does he have to go to a shop on every street? I love these Marichat scenes. I want to see Adrien being as sarcastic as Chat Noir here.

Hack-San: Marinette is in a hurry, but she should think about telling Chat Noir she’s leaving Paris. Chat Noir again feels that Ladybug doesn’t trust him. Sincere Ladynoir conversation.

Gabriel Agreste: Adrien brings ill Nathalie a meal and tries to talk to her about his problems. Adrien is compared to an imprisoned princess and Marinette—to a knight. Does Félix suspect that the wedding ring is Adrien’s Amok and try to protect him? Kagami and Félix don’t seem to like each other. Or this is how Félix reacts when he likes somebody. I thought Gabriel tried to kill Félix, but the Akuma goes to the fake wedding ring. OK, so this episode should be before Dearest Family. Félix is now sure that Gabriel created Senti-Gabriel and that he has the Peacock Miraculous.

Ephemeral: Gabriel’s touching his wedding ring when he’s telling Adrien to replace him at the conference. Su-Han tells Ladybug that she should know Chat Noir’s true identity. Marinette cannot believe that Chat Noir is really Adrien. It’s too early for the true reveal: Marinette needs to appreciate Chat Noir too. Marichat needs to happen. Again, neither the reveal nor Adrienette aren’t really problems, it’s the relationship between Adrien and Gabriel: Adrien loves him, but Gabriel is ready to hurt him to achieve his goal. Gabriel’s touching his wedding ring when he’s forcing Adrien to be Akumatised. More: The Reveal & Adrinette. OK, so the Kwamis confirm that the wish destroys the world and recreates it.

Psycomedian: The girls say there’s no love without friendship. Adrien again makes googly eyes at Marinette. Marinette, don’t listen to this clown. This time it’s Ladybug who falls victim to the villain and Chat Noir has to help her.

Qilin: —

Kuro Neko: Adrien feels left out by Ladybug. He gives up his ring and then changes his whole personality to be the Cat she wants him to be. But it’s not the Cat she needs. Plagg says Adrien can be serious around his father and Nathalie, so it’s sad that Ladybug wants him to be like that too. Ladybug says she knows Chat Noir very well while mistaking him for the Sentimonster. Plagg says Adrien is both Adrien and Chat Noir.

Penalteam: Adrien can’t play football.

Risk: Adrien says he doesn’t want to be a model and tells Lila he doesn’t want to listen to her lies. Gabriel wants to send Adrien away. Adrienette moment. Adrien says that it’s like an invisible force stopped him from telling his father he didn’t want to be a model. Félix says he wants to save Adrien.

Strike Back: Ladybug mistakes Félix for Adrien. If she knew Chat Noir’s true identity, she wouldn’t make that mistake. Or if Chat Noir intervened. Félix quietly says that he’s sorry and he betrays the heroes, but in the context of season 5 I can see he isn’t totally evil and selfish. Chat Noir stands by Ladybug and comforts her.

So. Mr. Pigeon 72.

I feel the second-hand embarrassment approaching because not only this is ml, it's ml in what is possibly the most awkward setting for a 15 y/o in real life: the pool.

Anyway, based on the 0.25 seconds I hyperfixated on, I think the premise is that Adrien is in a photoshoot for a line of swimwear, which is the reason why Gabe "is" there (don't lie to yourself, do you think this man would go on his ipad to see his son in swim class? ofc not).

Mr. Pigeon is there because the pigeons are part of the aesthetic™, once again profiting from what was originally Marinette's idea, ahem. Gabriel, pay your interns. What am I saying? you're an a-hole, you won't.

So I think the reason why Mr. Pigeon will get akumatized is because they can't get a good shot of Adrien and they blame it on him and the pigeons. I can imagine it going like, Adrien at first flops because of his allergy, right? That's why they get him the thing for the nose (listen, I know swimmers use it regardless, okay? Shh. Let me go on my crack for a sec.) to see if it helps. The photoshoot keeps rolling and Adrien keeps failing, until one is a little too many. Except the last time he fails, it's not him or the pigeons: It's a distraction.

Exhibit A, your honor:

I can imagine one of two things are happening here. a) The rose is part of the photoshoot, b) it has something to do with these two:

Judging on the fact Marinette has The Look on her face, with Kagami looking evidently uncomfortable, I think it's the latter. This is right after Marinette has decided to give up on Adrien, right? What if. What if she and Kagami were hanging out and come across Adrien's shoot (long shot, I know), and Marinette, being the sweet bun she is, takes it upon herself to bring Adrien and Kagami together again without knowing the context of why they broke up?

If a scenario like this is the case, and Adrien is already on his way to whatever event will occur that will result in the Guiltrip Bubbles™, I can see why having his ex and his Just A Friend But I'm Actually Not So Sure Anymore??? in the same place, watching him model in a friggin swimsuit and failing spectacularly at it, might be the cause for a little awkwardness on his end.

tl;dr: Mr. Pigeon 72 might give us awkward Adrien on top of the bounty of Queen Alya and Miss Ladybug powering up.

Falling (For Her)

Spoilers for Mr. Pigeon 72

Adrien’s head slowly slumped back against his pillow, tugging the covers up over his chest.  He stared up at the cavernous, darkened ceiling, tracing paths in the too familiar shadows.

With as many battles on the rooftops as he’d secretly fought, falling wasn’t exactly an unfamiliar feeling for him.

He glanced over at the small ball of fur on the pillow next to him. Plagg was already nestled in comfortably.

“You got to relax,” Plagg grumbled earlier.  “All you did was fall for Marinette and fly around while I had to deal with more pigeons and water for Ladybug in your place.  Ugh...  I don’t want to have to even go near water again for the next millennia.”

His brows furrowed.  “You know, I did have to model and dive over and over again first.”

Glowing green eyes peeked out as Plagg snorted.  “Not that they got a single, usable take.”

Shuddering, Adrien smirked, firing back.  “From what I heard, I’m going to have to swim with the sharks next time.  Think you’ll be lucky enough to avoid the water then, too?”

“With as active as Hawkmoth has been lately, we can still hope that an Akuma might cancel it.”

With a weary sigh, Adrien glanced over as the digits on the clock steadily creeped higher.   Shifting onto his side, he could still hear Plagg’s soft snores snuffling from behind him.  

It was probably just a thoughtless word choice from Plagg.  After all, it wouldn’t even be the first time his Kwami had enjoyed teasing him.

However, now he couldn’t help but think about those three words, over and over again as sleep eluded him.

He hadn’t exactly fallen for Marinette.

She had knocked into him, and he’d been so startled and focused on keeping her safe that his usual muscle memory hadn’t kicked in to let him turn in mid-air.

Afterwards, Marinette seemed legitimately embarrassed to have stumbled onto a shoot, even stumbling on her way out.

Of course, he knew she hadn’t been alone.  After all, he’d spotted both Marinette and someone else there on his first ill-fated dive.  

There were certainly plenty of times where he couldn’t understand everything she did or she said, but nearly everything she did was done out of kindness.

After the Gorilla had pulled away, he’d recognized Tsurugi's bright red car sitting at the end of the street.  Belatedly, he pieced together what must have happened.  Marinette must have heard they’d broken up and was trying to patch things up.  She was selfless like that, always thinking about others.  Even if Kagami had stayed quite deliberately out of his sight.

She’d only stumbled a little over her words, but it had cheered him to no end to see she still held onto the umbrella he’d lent to her so long ago.  After all this time, Marinette hadn’t forgotten where it had come from.  Maybe that first, good day of their friendship had stuck with her, too.

She’d even offered to walk home with him, right when he really could use the friend.  

No matter if he didn’t exactly plan to fall for her, it seemed like the end result was going to be the same anyways.

After all, he’d spent the whole evening thinking about Marinette.

Scrubbed his hand over his face, he let his eyes fall closed.  

Maybe he just had a type.  After all, he had fallen with Ladybug that moment they’d first met, a whole day before he’d watched her face down her own demons before turning to declare war on Paris’s own supervillain.

It wasn’t likely that Marinette was fighting anything like the battles he and Ladybug faced—not after she’d accidentally revealed herself to him as Multimouse, anyways—but from the moment she had taken his arm earlier, Marinette had proven herself more than capable of casting away the demons of loneliness and isolation that were haunting him.

He didn’t notice it.  Not right away.

It wasn’t until well after the umbrella snapped closed and he had conked his head against the car door frame.  It was only as his eyes followed back to her as the Gorilla pulled away that Adrien realized he hadn’t laughed so hard in a very long while.

Not even with Ladybug.
