i love the tss fandom and i usually side with criticism because it’s usually warranted BUT i think it’s important people remember that thomas is having FUN. we can have fun with these characters while he’s working on the next episode and remember, he’s still getting his footing writing them without joan’s help. pls guys let him have a bit of fun

btw i really really hope that janus's current characterization, with the wine and sass, is just there for the more light-hearted episodes, and that thomas hasn't forgotten the nuance behind his character.

pearls are a luxury, are incredibly rare, and have significant value. if i had a pearl necklace and my ambiguous ex broke it in a midst of an argument, i too would scramble on the dirty floor to pick them up. but that’s not the point.

“i can put it together” this is not about the necklace.

the point is, after she had sold everything, this was the last grasp mitzi had of atlas. and she was not ready to lose him again. but also, it’s important to note that this encompasses a recurring motif in mitzi’s characterisation. that this was a desperate act to regain normalcy. she feels heavy responsibility to keep lackadaisy running, and also atlas’ legacy alive.

but let’s rewind first. this happened because mitzi and zib’s understanding of the future didn’t align. she wants to revive the business, but he wants them to relive their nomadic past. to travel. to play music again. you think mitzi’s desperate? take a look at this guy.

he had one of her pearls pocketed. and it was never because he wanted to sell it for extra cash, despite him being clear of the member’s struggles. it could just be him keeping it safe, like he did plan to eventually give it back. but the way i see it, zib felt an uneasy sense of right to hold mitzi back from grief.

and THEN, he hands it back to her.

i felt that this was when EVERYTHING started to collapse. he hands her the last pearl, a symbolic surrender. he’s giving up on the fantasy that she would snap out of it and stop living so painfully in the past. but also, he caught onto his own hypocrisy that he himself had been fantasising of a different past.

and as mitzi heads home, he stays in sleazy town before spending the rest of the day in a cold cell.

THAT, my friend, is lackadaisy’s top tier characterisation and storytelling!!

Oh! That’s most certainly Mitzi, on first read I didn’t look close and thought that was Atlas’s silhouette. All the old crew are caught adrift in what was, huh.

Which means that which ‘makes light for dead eyes’ is the dead tree… does it represent Atlas? Or the dead husk of what he built, upon which Mordecai Mitzi and Victor project so much?

What is that veining the tree? Lightning?( the crackles certainly suggest so).

Or is it water ? a flood slowly seeping through the dead husk of what was built, until it all cataclysmically crumbles (the primary mechanisms of which would be ROT and slowly building water pressure, very thematically appropriate).

They’re in a desert, with a singular dead tree. a trickle would bring life, a deluge will lead to flash flooding and destroy the tree. But I’m not sure what water IS metaphorically in that interpretation of the scenario. I do know that the great flood of 1927 is coming.

There’s a storm brewing in the sky(which would bring WATER), maybe they’re all waiting for lightning to strike twice — that would make Atlas’s first entrance into their lives a metaphorically lightning strike, ultimately destructive. And if the tree crackles with energy, then perhaps that suggests that is what M&M&V are doing — living off the aftershocks of energy, waiting for another lightening strike even if that might mean doom.

Interesting, not quite sure what to make of it, except that living trapped in memory is unlikely to end well for any of them!

lacy who busies herself with caring for mr. sable rather than indulging in romance or men, almost subconsciously convinced of harboring a ‘torch’ for him so to speak … compelled to lighten the load on his shoulders he won’t take care of himself and senselessly protective of him ; hackles raising when he’s met with danger of any sort, and surely that means she’s smitten ( or so her friends say, with all-knowing coyness in their pitchy tones ) and that’s -- fine. lacy can accept that. but then here comes his new paramour who lacy looks down upon but can’t stop looking at nonetheless, and surely this is envy in her heart. surely she’s appalled by mitzi’s sugary words that make threats sound like tender promises, the haughty quirk pursing at ruby lips, and her manner of awful business. she’s glad, she knows, when wick says it’s over. she’s over the moon, probably, but she can’t stop thinking about purple smeared eyes and the disheveled look brought upon mousy, brown hair and her fur bristles and her skin beneath burns for days to come.

THIS!!! i know the community can be harsh with the criticism so for him to accept it and address it with GRACE??? like he ate that up. it was so nice getting a video just full of transparency. no bullshit, just him being honest and having a good time. this is why i love thomas.

I have a lot of respect for Thomas’s update video. It couldn’t have been easy talking about some of the deeply personal stuff he laid out in the video and I appreciate the transparency he had with the viewers. His feelings towards the criticism he’s been receiving was very well articulated and fair to himself and the people making the criticisms. I heard his iconic laugh in there while making a humerus comment and I smiled so much cause it sounded really genuine. I’m excited for what the future holds!

I WAS LOOKING AT THIS!!! i really wanted to make a theory abt it so i hope you don’t mind me adding onto this-

allegedly, bare with me, one of the main points in the book is that it doesn’t trust the reader enough to give it all the information (i’m taking this from the first fucking page of google this could very well be wrong, putting that out there right now). calling back to the iconic logan quote “knowledge is our greatest weapon and our greatest defense,” perhaps this is representative of thomas being unaware of the absolute horror of what’s to come, or perhaps it’s representative of logan himself. being set in communist russia that was when propaganda was best at play and people were being taken out of the public opinion very quickly, and lowkey logan getting ignored is kinda like a certain someone trying to remove him the picture. obviously spitballing so going back to actual facts about the book, according to fly by nightpress, some themes are “mastering one’s circumstances, the development of character and relationships under stress, the interplay of individuality and equality within social class, and [national] identity”

it also focuses heavy on imprisonment, freedom, and purpose, which i think most can agree has/is going to play a LARGE part in logan’s arc, especially because of his recent episode appearances. maybe not the first two but the latter for sure, and maybe we can see the first two coming into play more? idk

also i just wanted to point out logan’s jeans being ripped could symbolize him letting go of the professionalism to just. be happy.

obviously not everything is symbolic!! i just like to interpret literally everything i see, bc every little thing could be a hint, clue, or easter egg <3 and this information may not be entirely correct as i have not read the book! ty

i love the ideas of sides having abilities/traits that go along w animals-- like obvi remus has his tentacles of an octopus, janus can hiss like a snake and has scales, and virgil can hiss like a spider (? im 99.9% sure his counterpart is a spider). but what the hell are the light sides' animals. do they even have any? or are they reserved for the more "untamed" dark sides

the Lackadaisy pilot was so good it was soooo goooooood I love how you don’t have to read the webcomic to enjoy it but it’s also so much more enjoyable if you have read the webcomic and it stays true to the source and ughgggghhhhhhhhhggggh it’s so good the characters were portrayed so perfectly and the animation and just just just

did anyone else ever catch this??? he treats a beverage like a finger food. not only is he picking out ice to munch on it like a snack, he's also savoring the lemon garnish.

allow me to reach peak insanity at 3 am type beat here– this actually reflects a lot about asa's character, especially regarding how he treats those around him.

don't go too crazy on me now he might just like to munch on ice and lemon slices–

BUT it fits the atmosphere of the scene since the guy is quite literally consuming mitzi, or what is left of her. which takes form in either taunting her with the remnants of atlas' death or taking jabs at her character.

there's some aspect of gluttony here. as in, despite what he claims to believe, he still sees mitzi as a hurdle to be dealt with. which is why he's been trying to convince, or let's say weed her out of the industry.

we can reflect this back on the 20s in general and how history tends to write women off their very pivotal role in the bootlegging business.

or i mean maybe im just entertaining my past in literature class because... as mitzi says herself: only asa can explain asa

Lackadasiy Makeup part 2

Part one was more of a ramble, wanted to make part two because I have a more in-depth analysis on the characters makeup

I mentioned in part one that makeup is usually thought of as a coverup, something for women to hide behind. But in Lackadaisy, makeup reflects each makeup wearers true self. Like Ivy and her flapper outfit, she is associated with light and the sun, and her shimmering gold eyeshadow and mascaraed eyelashes and gold dress, shows her true self, someone beautiful, youthfully charming, and radiates the warm glow of the sun.

Ivy also only wears makeup inside the speak easy. Before the 1920s “nice girls didn’t wear makeup”after the war and the men returned home, women competed for jobs and would wear attention grabbing makeup, buuuuuut it still wasn’t really seen as a good thing or a professional thing. I guess trendy is a better word. Ivy is not fully independent of her parents and maybe trys to keep her makeup on the down low, or it might symbolize that Ivy feels the most herself when dancing at the speakeasy. Or maybe she just prefers it for parties or partying.

Mitzi’s style and symbolism is also interesting

While Ivy’s outfit is ornate and playful Mitzi is covered in drip at all times, she is also heavily associated with peacocks. Peacocks symbolize beauty, wealth, and sinful pride. There is a double meaning to her peacock symbolism because peacock feathers have their own symbolism and it’s what she is seen with in her pinups especially her peacock feather fan

The peacock feather represents rebirth and hope.

Mitzi being insecure about her standing and was blinded by the glitz and glamour of the wealthy life style, sports an insane amount of drip, always wearing outfits and jewelry that belong in a magazine, always picture perfect, and compliments this with plumb eye shadow brown eyeliner and mulberry lipstick giving her a sultry look that goes well with her sleepy eye shape. This look more reflects what her true self has become, someone who has had a taste of the good life and refuses to go back.

Serafine Savoy is the opposite

Like Mitzi (kinda) she has come across good fourtune as a hijacker to a wealthy bootlegger, and wears expensive jewelry (I think) and cloths but has her own unique style that would NOT be socially except-able in her time

She can pull off dresses, but prefers either a snazzy professional suit

Or to let her true flag fly with her gangster pirate suit, bones and all

To complement all three of these looks she sports red eye shadow, black eyeliner and blood red lipstick. Giving her a dangerous look that gives her over all look an untamable aura. Unlike Mitzi’s mindset of never going back to being poor, I think Serafine could give a shit

Her and her brothers swanky suit isn’t treated any differently then if they were back in the swamp, it hasn’t changed who they are.

So she is more “I was homeless at 10 and lived in a swamp once, and bitch I will do it again!” At least that’s what I get from just having melted candles all over the expensive stuff and just treating the swanky stuff as a backdrop in any case. That kind of mindset was invaluable in the grate depression. It was the literal difference between life and death for rich people who lost everything and couldn’t except lesser work or a lesser life style
