92. What was their childhood like? (For Shae?)

Prepare for a long post xDDD

Shae’s memories of his childhood beyond the Lavellans are flimsy. He remembers a forest and being very, very cold. And then suddenly he hadn’t felt cold at all. He remembers the frost spreading on the fallen tree he had climbed over. There were some blueberries he ate. And the people dressed in furs and leathers. But not like the Dalish. These people were very big.

Later on he was told that the Avvar had found him wandering in the Frostbacks, alone and unable to tell them where he came from. They had taken him to their hold and Shae lived there for a little over a year. He has some memories of the hold and the Avvar, but memories of a five year old are fleeting and hard to recall with no one to fill in the blanks.

The Lavellans adopted Shae when he was six. The Avvar had taken him to the Arlathvhen, so he could be with his people. Keeper Deshanna had noticed the boys magical talent and had offered him a home with the Lavellans. The clan was in a need of a mage, since almost none of the clans children and teens had exhibited magical talents of late.

Growing up, Shae was a quiet and a little shy, the type who you forget is in the room with you because they are very content on their own. He grew up very free, because he never caused any trouble and therefore was trusted to not get into trouble either. He was very inquisitive and prone to ask questions, but only when he felt comfortable enough. Sometimes he would disappear into the forest for hours at time to have his own adventures.

Shae didn’t form strong bonds with the children of the clan. He did play with the other kids, but mostly was content on playing and exploring the world on his own. Later, in his early teens, he formed a friendship with a girl named Mitha, who became his best friend in the clan.

Clan Lavellan moved around the Free Marches, not stopping anywhere for too long. Shae shared the aravel with Deshanna and her First, Tellen. They also raised Shae. Deshanna was strict and caring, but Shae was always aware that she was not her mother. To him, Deshanna was a teacher and a mentor, not a parent. The First, a soft spoken and gentle man was a little like an older brother to him. But the kind of brother who you are not very close to, since you have closer to a 20 year age gap. He cared for Shae, encouraged him and taught him how to care for plants. 

They each had their own little spaces in the aravel. Deshanna’s was full or scrolls and books she had gathered through her life. Tellen’s nook was filled with a small garden of pots and bowls, each housing a different medicinal herb or flower. The aravel always smelled like plants and damp soil. Deshanna sometimes complained that the small garden Tellen kept made the air so humid inside the aravel that her books would rot one day. But Tellen being the clan’s healer, he needed those plants, so they were tolerated.

A feeling of not belonging is something that accompanied Shae during his early years and well into his teens. It’s not that he wasn’t well received with the Lavellans, it was just not knowing where you come from.

Other unpleasant childhood memory for Shae is connected to his dyslexia. There was a time when the other kids bullied him, called him stupid because he didn’t learn to read as fast as the others, and never “properly”. Deshanna put a stop to this very quickly, but was never really able to explain why Shae could not read like the rest of them. She knew Shae was very intelligent, even as a child, so she let it be and told Shae there were other ways to learn too. But it always bothered Shae, and even to this day, it’s something he doesn’t really like to tell people openly about.

C: Comfort1. how do they sit in a chair?

Shae doesn’t sit in chairs much. If you leave him to work alone, he’ll spread everything on the floor and just sit in the middle. If he wants to use a chair, then he will cross one of his legs under him (until it gets numb and he’ll have to switch position), or he will sit sideways in the chair, with his feet dangling from the side.

2. in what position do they sleep?

Shae likes to sleep on his side, with his legs slightly bend and one hand tucked under the pillow.

3. what is their ideal comfort day?

Gardening in the early morning when the sun is not very high yet. Then a good long bath, a nice meal and just lounging around, preferably have Dorian read him something.

4. what is their major comfort food? Why?

Fish stew. (Salmon, potatoes, carrots, onions, sour milk and herbs.) It has been his favorite food as long as he remembers.

5. who is the best at comforting them when down?

Dorian. Before that, it was Mitha, his best friend in the clan.

G: Gorgeous1. what is their most attractive external feature?

That’s really in the eye of the beholder, isn’t it? I would say his eyes. They’re bright emerald green, with some skyblue in the middle. Auburn eyelashes. He never wears makeup, but the Vallaslin acts as kind of an eyeliner, drawing your eyes to his. Shae would brobably say his hair.

2. what is the most attractive part of their personality?

Kindness, really. Shae would say it’s his willingness and want to learn new things. But it’s really his kindness.

3. what benefits come with being their friend?

He’s very loyal, and again, kind. He will listen to your every worry, and try to offer help, if he can. He’s not very good at sharing his own worries though.

4. what parts of them do they like and dislike?

Shae likes his hair color, because it’s fairly unique. He hasn’t seen many people with as fiery red hair as his. It does have it’s disadvantages too though, because it stands out.

Shae sometimes dislikes how skinny he is. He was underweight in the beginning of the Inquisition, but gain some fat and muscle during. But he’s still tall and lean, and sometimes it bothers him a little. Especially if it makes people think he’s somehow fragile or weak. He’s neither. He might be not as strong as the warriors around him, be he’s fairly fit under those robes. His muscles simply don’t get big, but that doesn’t mean they’re not strong.

5. what parts of others do they envy?

People who are quick and witty with their replies. Shae has never been like that, not truly. He has his moments, but it’s rare. It’s the healthy kind of envy though, more like admiration really.

Shae also envies people’s “ability” to tan and stay easily in the sun. Shae can tan, but only after getting his skin burned several times, and even then it’s a very light tan. And the freckles like to multiply in the sun.

J: Joy1. what makes them happy?

Learning new things. Realizations. Like, when he suddenly understand something, something new, that has eluded him. Or simply succeeding in new things, like getting a new spell to work.

2. who makes them happy?

Friends and family, though the latter is basically same as the first, since Clan Lavellan is dead, and Shae doesn’t know who his real parents and clan were.

3. are there any songs that bring them joy?

This is the melody of the music box he used to have.

4. are they happy often?

Yes and no. Shae can easily forget his worries for a while, if he focuses on things he likes. But he is reminded of the bad things just as easy, and thinks about the things that have happened way too much. If he could have done something differently, if he should have said this instead. What if he chose wrong. What if he will choose wrong again.

5. what brings them the most joy in the world?
