Canon World State

Decided to compile my main world state for Dragon Age in anticipation of The Veilguard.

This world state is mostly compatible with comics/novels, with the exception of Alistair. I figure events are basically the same, except instead of king, he’s just a Grey Warden. *BIG SHRUG*

In an unknown year, Felassan is awakened after an indeterminate amount of time by the Fade spirit of Fen’Harel in order to prepare him for reawakening. His primary duty is to track down magical artifacts to help Fen’Harel regain his power and to discover what changes have occurred.

In 9:10 Felassan meets Althera, Keeper of Clan Lavellan at the Arlathven. She introduces him to her wife, Miriam and they invite him to travel with Clan Lavellan to learn how they’ve kept a clan full of mages safe for the last several generations. In 9:13, Evelyn is born to Felassan and Althera. In 9:17 Ellana is born to Felassan and Miriam. Fen’harel has become suspicious of Felassan over the last seven years, and although Althera has been using her significant power to protect him, Fel knows he must return eventually. He uses Ellana in an ancient ritual to wipe the Lavellan clan from Fen’Harel’s memory in an effort to protect them, resulting in the loss of her magic. Ellana is the only non-mage in Clan Lavellan in four generations.

In 9:18, Felassan leaves Clan Lavellan. Ellana’s memories of him are limited to a smell, a voice, and a smile. Evelyn remembers and hates him for leaving.

Ellana meets her 2nd cousin once removed, Halina Mahariel and idolizes her. Mahariel is Miriam’s 1st cousin’s daughter.

In 9:24, Althera (40, F) and Miriam Lavellan (35, F) are presumably killed defending their clan from Tevinter slavers. Miriam has just given birth to twins. They leave behind their children Levas, Susan, twins Pallas and Peras, Litha, Seryl, Lethas, Evelyn, Ellana, and twins Aneth and Athim.^ Deshanna Istimaethorial becomes Keeper.

In 9:29, Ellana (age 12) falls extremely ill. Her sister (18) Evelyn travels alone to find a rare herb to cure her sister and is cornered by Darkspawn. She is captured by templars and brought to Kinloch after using magic to defend herself, where she spends several months. An older brother and sister come to rescue her and Cullen helps her escape with her phylactery while the remaining siblings stabilize Ellana. Ellana’s growth is stunted from the months she spent being ill.

After Ellana is captured by the fledgling Inquisition in 9:41, Evelyn, as the First of Clan Lavellan, deposes Deshanna Istimaethorial as Keeper. Once she determines that Ellana is safe, she leads clan Lavellan to Haven. Clan Lavellan stays with the Inquisition until the defeat of Corypheus, at which point they move on and settle near Wycome to form a permanent Dalish township called Lavellanlea. The town becomes a haven for elven slaves fleeing Tevinter, and for elves from alienages all over Thedas who oppose the Agents of Fen’Harel but seek to better the lot of their race.

In 9:44, Cullen proposes to Evelyn and she accepts. They are married in 9:46.

i swear i took like a million screenshots back when i last played da:i back in 2021-ish but i couldnt find any of them on my blog so. here goes

this is my canon inquisitor ariel lavellan hes a sweet lil guy who used to be the second for his clans keeper (an elder cousin of his was the first because she showed more interest in actual leadership and passing down of rites whereas he showed more interest in hitting things with swords and/or fireballs) but then during his time in the inquisition his little niece started showing magical ability so the keeper was like 'ok well obviously we are keeping the child. the adult man whos leading a whole ass inquisition a few countries over can come visit any time but unforchunately were full on mages now' (its ok bc after the game he takes up varrics offer of living in kirkwall and becomes good friends with merrill. and of course visits his clan as often as hes able)

he romances dorian and iron bull (and if the game allowed it hed teach solas about the joys of bisexuality too. alas!!) and he uses a greatsword and casts spells and likes to think of himself as an arcane warrior of eld instead of a chantry-bound knight enchanter. i care him very very much :3

All right, been working on the boy for awhile so I’m eager to share about him! (Fair warning, there will be some differences from canon, and it got a little long so it’s under a cut)

Caleb Lavellan, he/him, roughly 25 at the start of Inquisition, elf, mage, Arcane Warrior

Condensed backstory, he is an adopted member of Clan Lavellan. Was an apprentice to Warden-Commander Mahariel before he left in search of a cure for the Blight. They met after the Warden slew the Archdemon. Through a chance meeting he also travelled with Anders around the Fifth Blight, hiding from Templars and Darkspawn.

Romanced Harding and Solas. Kenric also fits in there somewhere.

The romance was more of an accidental thing, mainly because he likes to flirt when nervous or mess with whoever he’s talking to. And he’s an idiot who thinks he’s cleverer than he really is. The Fade kiss only happened because he was convinced he was actually talking to a spirit that had picked up on his interest in Solas.

Broke canon a little in that Caleb initiates the breakup in Crestwood himself. He was convinced his good bad luck was going to run out and he was going to die stopping Corypheus and he panicked. Then Solas had his own panic. Harding is tired of Thedas’ dramatic, angst elven men.

Closest besides Solas would definitely be Sera and Dorian. Cole comes very close.

Things were very rocky with Bull and Vivienne initially. Bull, because he has an adopted sister who is a Vashoth mage that he’s protective of. Vivienne, just because they have very different views on mage freedom. Cassandra and Cullen fall in here too. There is eventually a mutual respect and a close friendship, at least with Bull and Vivienne.

The Chargers were saved. Caleb couldn’t ask Bull to sacrifice his men, and he did have a bias to keep them safe rather than maintain an alliance.

He and Blackwall were friends and Caleb’s fatal flaw is his devotion towards people he’s close with. Rainier was forgiven.

Cole seemed like he was on the way to become human already. He and Varric were just helping him along.

Briala rules through Gaspard.

Slight canon divergence here, in that a few of his friends in Clan Lavellan, including my Tabris, joined the Inquisition with him. Tabris found what Celene did to the Halamshiral alienage through talking with the servants and urged Caleb to let the Empress be assassinated.

Loghain was left in the Fade. It was not an easy decision, and in response Caleb does experimental testing with the Mark involving trying to figure out how to open Rifts himself at will and gain more mastery over it to try to avoid similar situations. This has a side effect of almost destabilizing the Mark earlier than canon.

Local Inquisitor gets up to enough shit that eventually Solas doesn’t even need magic to keep his hair from growing back. Harding likes most of the mayhem, but even she gets a few gray hairs from his antics.

Against the advice of almost everyone in the room, Caleb drank from the Well. He couldn’t let Morrigan take the knowledge and risk her not sharing it beyond what was needed for the situation. This decision has had zero consequences (lie).

Leliana became Divine. Caleb tried his hand at being Spymaster after she left and he wasn’t in the field closing Rifts. Charter forced him to let her take over.

See Blackwall above. That is his friend/ex-lover/current lover/It’s Complicated, and he will try to change his mind.

I immediately FREAKED OUT and made a lil questionnaire for my fwens to tell me about their Inquisitors and their crucial decisions, and I thought I would share!

Fane, internally: Why the is he so familiar? I never left the clan before this, so what the hell? This doesn’t make sense! Maybe it’s the mark messing with my head? But why would it--? Oh, hey, he’s..smiling? At me? Why would he--?

Solas, just really confused and intrigued: Herald, are you--?

Fane, without thinking: Your face looks good like that. 

Solas: I’m..sorry?

Fane, realizes what he said and blanks: I’m..gonna go die now. Just leave me in the ditch when you find me, okay? *embarrassed dragon roars in his head* What is wrong with me?! ‘Your face looks good like that’?! Who the hell says that?!

In which Fane wants to take a nap because he can’t handle this level of insularity. Meanwhile, has no idea he already did that. *finger guns*

Fane, mildy amused: Why do these idiots act like that care about sanctity? They only care where they can put an army, or their own asses. This is tiresome. I need a nap. I think a thousand years worth of sleep would do it..

There’s plenty of trees in the Hinterlands, and Fane will use them. With his head and a lot of force.

Scout Harding: Herald of Andraste, huh? That’s--

Fane: Don’t. I mean..I’ve already fucked myself over enough in the last two days, can we please just stop before I slam my head against the trunk of a tree?

Scout Harding, confused: Uhh, sure! Whatever you want, Herald.

Tamris answered the qunari with an affirmative grunt. He could see one spot where crossing the river without getting their boots wet would’ve been possible, but chose to keep it to himself. The elf could picture himself leaping across the natural bridge formed of heavily eroded rocks, but The Iron Bull’s weight just might have caused it to come crashing down. 

Besides, he actually preferred it like this. The stream wasn’t very strong and the water didn’t come close to reaching his knees. The coldness of the water was refreshing, and helped him ground himself in the moment. The chatter of birds in the riverside trees, although their voices foreign, made him feel at home. Welcome.

He’d always loved the gentle song of a flowing river, but now the pleasant memories of joyful hunting trips were framed with a bittersweet longing. The loss of his clan still hung over him as a shadow, no matter how much he tried to occupy his mind with something else. How long had it been, three weeks? Four?

His boots would be soaked. Perhaps ruined. Only a minor inconvenience, of course, as he was counting on encountering some real problems sooner rather than later.

Hey @siriskulk​ since you were wondering about this: that was my Inquisitor in the Zevwarden week story. Have a couple of screenshots of him!

That’s him! He’s a mage (Rift mage specialization) and formerly clan Lavellan’s First and that’s how he leads the Inquisition: just like Keeper Deshanna taught him to lead people. I love him very much and the poor dear is starting to crack under the pressure, but I hope he pulls through. I’m in the latter half of the game right now. Here are some more screenshots!

He can be the stern military leader

But mostly he perfers it when he can solve things with a smile ^^ He’s fairly easy-going normally. And he’s just a guy!! A guy who got put at the head of an organization for a religion he doesn’t belong to to stop a world-ending threat, but still just a guy! He’s afraid of deep water and finds the tears in the Veil absolutely fascinating when he’s not trying to close them to prevent more demons from coming through. His biggest fear right now is loosing himself to arrogance and power. He’s promised himself not to end up like Celene, Gaspard and all of the nobles Sera despises, not to play the game more than he has to, and especially not become hell-bent on things going only his way

A big part of the story I want to write about her is about control, control when the world would give her none of it. When she just keeps getting funneled into things that she can't be prepared for. When people define how she’s viewed due to preconceived prejudices against elves. When she is placed into a role that props her up as a herald for a god that isn’t her own. How does she fight back for control over her own identity? And when does she hold her ground and when to save her energy for another day. Part of her identity as an arcanist is that it’s the one thing she has complete control over, so she relies on her tinkerer's brain to find the solutions she needs.

this felt tumblr-worthy. here’s my recent oc (different origin from my other ocs), saoirse lavellan !! she’s the little sister of my inquisitor orion (i’ll post more about him sometime lol). clan lavellan was taken out in his canon, but i was replaying trespasser and heard sera say something about the possibility of there being members of the clan who escaped and i was like hmm. this seems like a good opportunity to utilize my special interest of oc making ☝️🤨 also she gets with cullen eventually. god i wish i was her 🙏🙏
