The Lady With The Recorder Asks The Questions (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries | Phryne/Jack | T | 6k | WIP)

well-versed in etiquette, extraordinarily nice (Good Omens, Historical RPF | Aziraphale/Crowley | G | 3k)
The Regency heist fic in which Jane Austen, criminal mastermind and aspiring novelist, pulls off the 1810 Clerkenwell Diamond Robbery with the help of a certain demon.
wins this year's award for: Quickest Fic (I wrote it in four days)
speak easy, swing hard (Marvel Cinematic Universe | Steve/Tony | T | 13k)
The 1920s Prohibition era!AU in which Tony runs a nightclub empire, Steve is an aspiring artist and/or questionably undercover agent, Sam and Bucky are bootlegging their way through America and nobody knows what Natasha is up to.
wins this year's award for: Most Historical Research (I watched two seasons of Boardwalk Empire and had to figure out multiple characters' speech patterns, then transpose these to the 1920s. Also I listened to so much vaudeville)
I don't think I will be around as much in 2024, barring unexpected hyperfixations, but I wish you all a glorious year anyway! May your WIPs be finished, your ships prolific and your fandoms full of joy.

Miss Fisher's Whumptober Challenge is back for 2023!
Tumblr media
What is Whumptober?
Whumptober is a month-long creative fandom challenge consisting of 31 themes and prompts. “Whump” means a work in which characters are put in emotionally and/or physically painful situations, and usually these works can be categorized as hurt/comfort.
How does this work?
If this sounds like your thing, simply go to this spreadsheet, write your name behind one of the prompts, and create something for it (to be posted at any point in October and the first week of November; it doesn’t have to be up on the actual day your prompt was assigned to). Each prompt can be claimed by multiple people and you can create something for as many of them as you want.
Please tag your works “MFMMwhumptober” and if you post them on AO3, you can also add them to this collection.
Even if whump isn’t for you, we’ve modified the event so you can still participate! We’ve had several writers bend the rules and write fluffy or smutty works for this challenge. Just make sure to tag your works appropriately and specify whether they contain comfort elements or are pure angst. Our main goal is to get you to write so all contributions are welcome!
This is the original announcement post and here is the official collection, which you can also add your entries to as long as they somewhat fit the overall theme of the original challenge.
Where can I check out the previous years’ entries?
Whumptober has been a longstanding tradition in this fandom so there are a lot of examples to draw inspiration from. You can read all of the past entries here:
2018
2019
2020
2021
2022
The fandom has grown a lot since last year and we want to encourage as many of you as possible to participate in this wonderful event. We look forward to seeing all your wonderful contributions!

Oh, and there's also aunt Prudence.

WIP Title Ask Meme
Prompt: Make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
I was tagged by @eternally-conflicted . I will not be tagging as many people as I have WIPs, for reasons that will shortly become clear. Also, I often will use cheeky blurbs or quips in my wip titles because the title is the last thing I do before I hit publish, which I do not do very often. Some of my WIPs are actually complete and I'm just too chicken to publish (or posted on Tumblr and forgot).
Tagging: @glamorouspixels @galadriel1010 @beerandyarn @laiqualaurelote @troiings @elialys @hypnotisedfireflies @chickiefoo bc I wanna know what y'alls desk drawers look like

Miss Fisher's Tumblr poll fic: Part 1
Explanation post
Tumblr media
Jack Robinson's heart thudded loudly as he walked up to Wardlow. He paused for a moment before the porch steps, glancing up at the door.
In a moment, he would be knocking on that door. Mr Butler would open it with a kindly smile, and announce to the lady of the house that he was there to see her. Jack could already imagine Phryne's smile upon seeing him, and the way her eyes would light up with curiosity at the gifts he came bearing.
He shook himself out of his reverie and stared down at the two objects he held in his hands.
In his one hand, the case file of his new case, and an invitation for her to join the investigation.
In his other hand, a small bouquet of flowers, selected from his own garden. An invitation of an entirely different kind, one he'd never been brave enough to extend before.
He grinned, took a deep breath, and walked up to the front door. The rapping of his knuckles against the wood echoed through the foyer.
Silence.
Jack waited a moment before he knocked again, this time more hesitant. Perhaps she was not home? But Mr Butler would usually answer the door whether she was home or not.
Jack was about to knock one last time when he heard a muted commotion in the hallway beyond the door. An urgent whispered conversation, followed by a soft sound Jack recognised as the parlour doors closing.
Suddenly, the front door swung open.
"Good day, Inspector," Mr Butler said. "Please come in, Miss Fisher will be out in a moment."
Was it Jack's imagination, or did he look slightly frazzled?
He stepped inside and was about to ask if something was the matter when the parlour doors opened just a crack. Phryne's head popped out.
"Oh hello, Jack," she said, slightly out of breath. "What brings you here today?"
"Er…" This was not the way Jack had imagined this particular conversation going. Mr Butler was still standing by his side, and Phryne did not seem like she was about to open the parlour doors any wider or invite him in.
A sound coming from within the parlour saved him from answering her. "What was that?"
"Nothing!" Phryne said, her voice rising with several octaves.
Jack tried to peer over her head into the parlour. "I thought I heard -"
A loud crash from somewhere behind Phryne interrupted him.
Phryne's eyes widened and she spun around, letting go of the doors in the process. One of the doors swung open, revealing the inside of the parlour to Jack.
His mouth fell open.
.
.
If you vote for the last option, you have to leave your own suggestion (or mention a suggestion already made by someone else) in the tags. If this option wins, the most popular suggestion mentioned in the notes/reblogs/tags of the post wins! The person who made the suggestion will be tagged and credited in the next instalment.

For @flufftober day 30: self love / self worth
500 words, rated T, no warnings
Summary: Loving yourself can be hard for a variety of reasons, and sometimes things aren’t as they seem at first glance.
Set early in the series, and pre-ot3 relationship
~~~
Elizabeth MacMillan had to work hard to love herself for who she is.
She knows the world at large does not accept her. Mac had found her way despite it, clawed a path for herself in a world that doesn’t want her, even gained respect by some of her peers…
But she still isn’t sure whether she truly loves herself. Whether, if she could change who she is - truly change, not just act and pretend - she wouldn’t take that option…
It would certainly make life easier, if she could find herself a nice husband and be happy as a housewife.
~
Her friend Phryne never seems to have such doubts.
Loving herself seems to come easy to Phryne Fisher, much easier than it comes to Mac.
She is vibrant in her clothes and her smile and her entire being, she pulls you in and always seems to know exactly what she is doing.
Where Mac is content to have found a style she isn’t quite so uncomfortable in, Phryne wears any style like it was made for her personally. Where Mac at least doesn’t hate herself anymore for whom she loves, Phryne never cared what society might think about her lovers.
~~~
Captain Jack Robinson has similar thoughts about the enigmatic Miss Fisher.
She used to unnerve him, but it didn’t take long until he was caught in her light, in the way she seems to make the entire world love her.
She doesn’t seem to ever doubt herself - in fact, often thinks she can do his job better than him (not that she is wrong, most times).
Phryne does whatever she likes, and instead of second-guessing herself, she expects the world to adapt to her and her eccentricities. He never wants her to change, and thinks she wouldn’t want to, either.
~
Jack sees Phryne, and he sees a kind of confidence he never had.
Not to say he is lacking confidence entirely, he knows he is good at his job, and he likes to think of himself as a good person… but all of this is only while sticking to what is expected, fitting to the mold of a man in his position, and when he finds himself desiring more, desiring otherwise, he pushes it away.
He isn’t sure he loves every part of himself. Isn’t even certain he knows who he truly could be, if he let himself choose freely.
~~~
Phryne is very aware of how the world perceives her.
She knows she isn’t what most would call normal, and she has long made peace with this fact. She had her own demons haunting her, and life can be too short not to live it at the fullest.
Besides, she needs the distractions sometimes, danger and excitement and a string of lovers to forget the dark thoughts of the past.
She isn’t sure whether she is a good person, not like Jack or Elizbeth are. But she is alive, this is her life, and she is damn well living it.
~~~

Imagine after Ted's "Coach is this nuts? Us leaving like this?" and Beard's confession that he doesn't want to go, the flight attendant asks Ted if he wants to go to the hospital with his friend and Ted just looks at her.. realizing something and then CUT to black.
We see Rebecca, still standing at the gate, tears running down her face. Suddenly Ted comes back out of the plane, rushes to her and says "Come with me!" and Rebecca's like "What?!" - "You already have a plane ticket. Come with me to Kansas."
Last boarding call
We see them, just looking at each other, smiling, beaming.
The end.

Hellooo! Paranormal investigator AU for Phrack, maybe? Thank you!!
thank you for the prompt! (from this AU ask game) This is a fun one. Though one could easily set it in the modern day, I would still set it in the 1920s, because that was such a fascinating time in terms of the spiritual and supernatural - you've got the Spiritualism revival that the show briefly explores in Death Comes Knocking, the rise of silent horror films like The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and Nosferatu, and the moral panic association between jazz and vampires, which is how you get the Jazz Age Vamp (taken literally in the Rivers of London second novel Moon Over Soho, which has vampires that feed on jazz).
Phryne is one such Jazz Age Vamp (not literally; she is perfectly human). She solves supernatural cases because she remains haunted by her sister's murder at the hands of necromancer Murdoch Foyle, which she has never been able to get him convicted for (it is very difficult to prove necromancy in a court of law). She is descended from a long line of witches on her mother's side. This means that Aunt Prudence is in fact a witch of considerable strength, but chooses to use none of it because Magic is Not Proper. As they have no female descendants, they adopt Jane into their line so she will inherit the power.
Jack is the detective inspector who keeps getting assigned all the cases with a whiff of the supernatural because nobody else wants to handle them. He has inadvertently become the 1920s Melbourne equivalent of the Folly (if you know Rivers of London). This is despite the fact that he is deeply skeptical by nature - had one too many run-ins with scam artists pretending to be mediums (the hypnotist whom Jane is forced to steal for is one such conman) - and is convinced that Miss Fisher is a fraud. After reluctantly solving multiple cases with her, he concedes ghosts are real but remains immensely annoyed about it.
Dot is a real medium who struggles to reconcile her gift with her Catholic faith. She falls in love with Hugh after being forced to exorcise him, because he is exactly the kind of idiot who would end up getting possessed on his first case.
Mac still works at the morgue, which is full of ghosts. She can see them but mostly ignores them ("are you trying to sabotage your own autopsy, madam? no? then go cry in the corner till I'm done. Thank you.")
Bert came back from the war. Cec did not. This has not stopped them from driving a cab together. Their cab can take you to any part of Melbourne, including the city of the dead. They are still Communists. They take the "spectre haunting" aspect of it very seriously.
Mr Butler has been working at Wardlow for the past century and plans to continue doing so indefinitely. Nobody knows if he is alive, dead, or undead; moreover they feel it is impolite to ask.
Every case in this AU has a supernatural element except Death Comes Knocking, wherein it is revealed that every single person involved is scamming everyone else.
Arthur Conan Doyle makes a cameo in Away With the Fairies. Harry Houdini makes a cameo in Death Defying Feats and spends most of it trashing Doyle's views on spiritualism.
Crypt of Tears is greatly improved by the crypt being full of actual undead.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Rating: Explicit Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Phryne Fisher/Jack Robinson Characters: Phryne Fisher, Jack Robinson Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Not Canon Compliant - Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears, First Time, Porn with Feelings, Bath Sex, reunion in southampton in shitty england weather, Overthinking, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, phryne gets a bit stuck in her own head, jack is the best partner and is more than happy to reassure her, Gentleness, Emotional Growth
Phryne sighed as another flash of lightning lit up the sky. She had wanted to make his first day in England memorable, and while it was far too big a gesture to ever make up for, it was looking more and more like she wouldn’t even be given a chance to try.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favourite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers.
It has been a truly embarrassing number of weeks since I got this, but better late than never, right? Here are my 5, in chronological order:
"All Our Gifts at Once, or, the Young Sea-Man," BBC Sherlock, 48k. A Victorian-era realist retelling of The Little Mermaid. John, an illiterate shipwright, gives up his home and his voice for a chance to work alongside Sherlock Holmes, the famous London botanist. My first long fic (still my longest to date!) and monstrously ambitious; to this day I can't quite believe I pulled it off. But this is a self-rec post, so I'm gonna say it: I really did.
"A Case-by-Case Basis," BBC Sherlock, 5,2k. A comic, highly tropy getting-together fic. Which is really not usually my thing at all! I wrote this for an exchange, and I managed to honor the prompt while still making it very much my own, and I remain proud that I managed both those things at the same time.
"Every Day's Most Quiet Need," Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, 22.5k. Canon-compliant Mac-PoV fic about Mac's longstanding (if buried) feelings for Phryne and her growing friendship with Jack Robinson and the tensions between these things. This one really stretched me, as did working with @havingbeenbreathedout (who also prompted the fic) as a beta.
"Voskresenie," For All Mankind, 8k. An immediately-post-s3 fic set in Moscow about mourning in the face of catastrophic loss, from the PoV of the character you're thinking of if you have watched the show (which I do not want to spoil for anyone who hasn't!!!) This was, in its own way, a very ambitious fic (which uhhh seems to be a theme among my favorites) but I think I got to something very real and raw and universal while also keeping the specificity of the character and the setting.
"No Real Reason to be Lonely," For All Mankind, 3.5k. Post S2 fic. Ed's had a shitty day, but at least he's got Molly looking out for him, and she knows just the thing to cheer him up. Ed and Molly's friendship is one of my favorite things about this show, and I feel like I got the full dimensionality of it here.
I am too inept lazy to do this askbox-wise, so I will instead tag: @midnight-els , @moocowmoocow , @doctornerdington , @peachpulpeuse , and @trickybonmot . And anyone else who wants to do it -- please tag me if you do! I love these things.

am giggling thinking about s1!jack a man with a pretty incredible sexual appetite being Completely Unnerved by phryne having an even more incredible appetite than him ‘how is that even possible’ awestruck and inspired s1!jack probably
relatedly the s3 line 'you know what it's like when you think life is fleeting and you might die at any moment' is such a Good bc it’s a stereotypical guy thing to say at least in mainstream media but in reality, women really do be having the same Problem with this as men

the way i ~needed the show to revisit and address rené. i knew they wouldn’t - it’s not that sort of show and that’s fine - but i would have loved to see it so very much, especially with jack. in one of those understated half-verbalised barely even a confession moments that are wanting to be half brushed off by her but the implications are understood and the sentiment is very much felt by jack and it’s an offering as much as any i love you, and it leads to comfort that never feels like it’s overwhelming or placating and and —
it feels more like a canon moment tbh and therefore not belonging within the timeframe of the show anyway but gosh! her dad and rené are such major influences in her life when it comes to romance and relationships - the theory and the practice; the observed and the learned - and in fact i want ~both of those explored within the context of jack so very very much actually. i think those moments could be so superbly gentle and profound and angsty and comforting in their tension and restraint and argh chomping at the bit
