I saw a post a few days ago (no chance I’ll find it again sorry whoops) about how the ton repeatedly show signs of not taking Penelope seriously as a woman and potential bride. I’ve been deeply researching peerage/titling rules recently, and I’ve thought it before, but I’m thinking a lot more now about the fact Penelope is rarely addressed correctly.

The rule is that the first daughter is Miss Surname and the subsequent daughters are Miss Firstname, surname optional but unlikely. For example; Kate was always Miss Sharma. Edwina was usually Miss Edwina, sometimes Miss Edwina Sharma. Cressida should be Miss Cowper, and usually is in formal settings. Daphne is Miss Bridgerton, the rest are Miss Eloise, Miss Francesca and Miss Hyacinth.

Penelope is the youngest. She should never be Miss Featherington, without the Penelope, but I feel like I hear it all the time. Maybe it’s a Mandela effect and I’m imagining things, or reading into it too much, but I feel like them subetly incorrectly addressing her is another way of disrespecting her and not acknowledging her.

What do y’all think??? Yes? No? I’m crazy? Shonda just doesn’t know the titling rules? Or doesn’t care?

Ignoring whatever season 3 was but it did get me thinking. What if Edwina did consider returning to India because she no longer had a reputation in the ton, no marriage prospects and thus no future. She was humiliated and blamed for the failed wedding and wanted to be free of it all.

This makes Mary open up about her own experiences leaving the ton. How heartbroken she was at being cast out by the only family she knew. How she considered staying in the ton, the only place she knew, but couldn't bear to see her children, especially little Kate, grow up there.

Mary put her children first and never regretted it. She left for India for them to have a happier life, far from the ton and her parents' constant judgement and demands to chase wealth. I imagine Mary's husband growing up in India or at least having connections to it so he is the one who brings up living in India. Mary follows her heart and says yes.

Mary emphasises to Edwina that her future is her choice and she will respect whatever she chooses to do, reaffirming the agency that Edwina was denied in season 2. But she asks that Edwina be sure of her choice and not leave because it's the easier option at that moment. That it's really what her heart wants. Otherwise she might regret it forever.

Edwina realises she doesn't know what she wants. She loves India, it's her home. She grew up thinking she'll settle down in England. After much deliberation, she decides to give England another shot. This time she wants it to be her own terms and not the whim's of a suitor.

She meet Friedrich who falls for her at first sight. But for Edwina it's more complicated given how she does not know what true love feels like. Her only romantic experience was with a man with wandering eyes and she is not ready to open her heart so soon after having it broken. Over time, Friedrich and Edwina develop a close relationship built on mutual trust and respect and Edwina realises she has been in love all along.

When Edwina goes to the Bridgerton's house with Lady Danbury and her mother, visiting her sister because she loves her so and hasn't seen her in so long (this follows after Kate and Anthony return from their honeymoon, but a little after because it's still painful for Edwina), and Anthony is there she purposefully calls him "Lord Bridgerton" or "Viscount Bridgerton" even when others around her, even when Anthony himself tells her that she can call him by his first name, she refuses. Everyone soon learns better than to try and convince her to do otherwise, and for Edwina it's fun to watch Anthony squirm.

+ to add on, Friedrich catches on and finds it kind of hilarious. He'll pretend to be neutral on the subject, but when introductions are made he follows Edwina's example and pretends Anthony has not first name.
