On Why Vin Stopped Mary
SPOILERS ALERT
I know many of you want to see Mary in action scenes, but Vin didn't stop Mary's intention to kill Taejin because he was being gentlemanly or because he undermined her strengths. He knows just how formidable she is as a fighter.
Vin just didn't want Mary to become another murderer.
I might be wrong and I apologize for this, but from what I read and watch, basically in Korea if you kill someone the murderer label will stay with you for the rest of your life, especially when the reason is not considered righteous (think defending one's country, or one's family). "MURDERER" might be your only label. It might also be your entire family's only label, whether they're complicit in the murder or not.
People will probably vandalize your house. They will probably write the word "Murderer" on the outer walls or on your front door and the stain will be difficult to remove. People will terrorize and bash you and your family in the streets and on the internet and it may last forever and it will haunt you all. People will take note of your records when you apply for jobs, apply for schools, get married, get a bank account. Even though you committed that murder as a minor, your criminal records as a murderer may leak or be exposed and you're done for.
Look at D.G. How the one murder he committed as young James Lee is basically the sword that hang above his head. Remember that both Charles Choi and Eugene had each been using it to control him. Look at Vin, who had to cut off all contacts and leave town. Remember how random strangers jeered and stared at him during the illegal underground fight club scenes when Workers openly called him a murderer.
Vin would never let Mary go through the same agony he'd been going through.

Shiva, Vishnu, Shakti and Lakshmi are chilling in Kailash.
Vishnu is scrolling Youtube and starts wheezing. Shiva looks over his shoulder and starts wheezing too. Phone is passed around and Shakti sits there like -_- with Lakshmi slumped against her unable to move because of her laughing fits. Once the wheezing is over Shiva immediately takes Vishnu's phone and sends a screenshot to Saraswati and Brahma.

Lynn’s Bionicle Media Looking-At Thing Part 4.5: I Take Back Everything I Said About How City Of Legends Would Probably Have Been The Best Bionicle Game
Ok so this will be. An interesting one. Also my previous City of Legends post is here, go check it out, I reference it a couple of times.
Right so before I begin, I just want to say that I replayed the 2003 version of City of Legends, and it is still fun. I also, for professionalism(?) purposes, played the first 2004 version (there's two), and it's basically the same as the one I'll be playing in this post, which makes my life a lot easier. Anyway, on with the video and also the rant about how much I dislike this version.
Alright so first off; the movement feels. More awkward? I guess? Like you can't turn instantly; you have to go through an awkward turning animation every time. Also the little score popups are gone, which sucks.
There is proper combat this time; while you could throw kanoka in the 2003 build, this one also has melee, and it is. Kinda bad? Like you have an awkward, clumsily-animated punch, but also a fairly satisfying ground-pound that defeats enemies in an AoE radius but has weird timing, and a roll that also does damage. Also the Kanoka is really satisfying.
There's only one map this time around, which appears to be an expanded version of the "Ta-Wahi" map from the 2003 build (the aesthetic, theme and one of the floor textures are the same). It has a bunch of neat details (a big cargo lift thing going up and down and circling bird-like creatures that I didn't see moving until I recorded this, so when I noclipped up on my first run-through I assumed they flew backwards relative to how they actually fly, like I thought their tails were like manta ray flaps or antennae or something)
Unlike the 2003 build, enemies spawn constantly without the player having to spawn them manually from a menu.
Instead of jerboas, this time they're presumably meant to be Morbuzakh (this won't be the last time the Morbuzakh will come up in this series), and their designs and animations are simple but effective! They die in one hit and deal. "Damage". But not really, like you flash red when you get hit, but there's no health metre and you can't die. However, they swarm and stun you when you hit, so if this did have a proper health system, it would probably be painful.
Left stick moves the character (more on him later) and right stick moves the camera. Clicking in the left stick does nothing, and clicking in the right stick switches to a weird first-person view that doesn't aim where you're moving, but instead it has to be manually angled. Pain. In terms of actual controls, triangle throws a disk, circle is melee, X is jump and square is roll.
The D-pad does nothing. Start pauses the game, as you'd expect, but select does something interesting; it pauses the game and puts you into noclip. You can fly around with the left stick and aim the camera with the right stick, as you'd expect; the left shoulder button allows you to speed up. Triangle unpauses the game, allowing you to both control the character and move the camera, and right trigger teleports you to the camera's current position.
Finally, let's talk about the character you play as, because. It's Matau, but with an interesting design.
The whole design is very. Chunky in a way I like, and I love the Metru armour motif being stylised into thick X-shapes, and the Aero Slicers being reduced down to a pair of beetle-like elytra so they can be part of his design without being too big. However, I don't like how small his brainstalk is.
And then there's this game's interpretation of the Mahiki, which. I genuinely love (except for the weird beak-mouth).
Like, the "jaw" with "teeth" would make this work really well as, like, a shapeshifted Makuta version of the Mahiki, or maybe an earlier version of the Olisi before Karzahni started modifying it. Also it kinda gives me Miru vibes, and the roundel "headphones" being adapted into proper earpieces is really cool. My only point against it is that it loses the actual Mahiki's retrofuturistic (maybe even slightly Art Deco?) aesthetic in favour of 2000s neoretrofuturistic sleekness, but I can't really complain because I love that era of sci-fi aesthetics. I wish I could see what the other five masks would have looked like, but alas.
Anyway uhhhh yeah. This wasn't worth it, and might end up invalidating my upcoming post about the Xbox demo (depending on how different that might be, and also if I can even find an Xbox emulator). Oh well!

Hheheeh i love your OC!!! You have no idea how much i love it when people rant about their OCs, and i just wanna say I LOVE NINGYO (did i spelt that right 😟)!!!
One more time, I said it and i will say it again, I LOVE your OCs, and i want to see more of you posting your OCs! If you don't mind tho :DD
🦅 anon
YAYAYYA U DID !! ningyo my silly <3 BUT ok literally eveyr time someone sends smth in im gonna talk abt a new oc bc I have a whole cast AGFHKAKFJD-
now, we all know that ningyo doesn't remember her past, or who she is whatsoever. they've been lost their entire life trying to pick up the pieces, and a mysterious stranger appears..
picrew ! this is miru, he/him prns! he is friendly, but incredibly cryptic. there's something deeper about him, as ningyo is the only person able to see him. he drops hints about her past before disappearing, which is obviously frustrating to her, but he does this for a reason :) (also imagine he's covered in yellow eye markings, picrew doesn't have those sniffles)

I did see that answer from him, but to be honest, it doesn't really mean much to me what Greg thinks? Idk, the Bionicle fandom as a whole has been far too reliant on Word of God in general, and it's hurt as much as it's helped. Whatever Greg's thoughts on the matter are, he never wrote about any other Toa Kaita in the official story, so anything else he has to say about the matter is more or less moot in my eyes. The vagueness of these particular answers doesn't help their case.
Okay, and I apologize for this, but can I go on a little rant here about BS01 deciding the canon shape of the Rua is a silver Hau? Because it's stupid. It's incredibly, mindbogglingly stupid, and it's a perfect example of what I mean when I say the fandom depends on Greg's word way too fucking much.
As you pointed out in the tags, Akamai, as a word, means wisdom, and Wairuha means spirit, and indeed, we know from the 2001 story bible that the two Toa Kaita's domains were switched at some point in development. Akamai was always planned to be the combination of Tahu, Onua, and Pohatu, but was originally set to be the Kaita of Wisdom, while Wairuha (always Gali+Kopaka+Lewa) would have been the Kaita of Spirit, later changed to Valour. Somewhere along the line, the decision was made to make Akamai the Spirit of Valour, and Wairuha the Spirit of Wisdom. Why not swap the names too to keep the meanings consistent? I don't know, but they didn't. And it lead to a lot of confusion in some parts of the marketing.
Most obvious is the Power Pack set, which includes a silver Kanohi Hau it describes as, and I quote: "the Kanohi Rua, the Silver Mask of Valor, worn by Toa Kaita Wairuha formed from Tahu, Pohatu, and Onua." Tell me, do you notice anything wrong with that sentence? Like the fact that it is entirely incorrect? The clear mix-up in this description, you would think, would be enough to make anyone think that it can't be taken as canon, it's too blatant an error.
But apparently not! Because some fan took it upon themselves at one point to ask Greg to clear up the issue, asking if the true appearance of the Kanohi Rua was a Hau, as it appeared in the Power Pack set (and also Bionicle Heroes, which also mistakenly called it the Mask of Valour, which is shaped like a Hau, funnily enough (: ), or a Miru, as it is depicted in MNOG and literally everywhere else. And Greg's response was, and I quote again: "The Rua on the set is canon."
The set is canon. Which is what he always said when asked something like this. Every time. Of course, this time, that particular phrasing is entirely unhelpful, because Toa Kaita Wairuha is a set. A combo model, sure, whose green Miru certainly isn't canon because we know the Rua is silver. But I think, in this case, it should take a little precedence over the Power Pack, which rather obviously doesn't even know what it's referring to! It uses the name Rua and then uses half the details of the Aki in its description. It can't be trusted! Especially not when we have several other sources from MNOG to the comics, to the Legend of Mata Nui cutscenes, to the actual Wairuha model itself to confirm that the Rua looks like a Miru! Of course it does, none of Wairuha's components wear a Hau! And if that's still not enough, Wairuha Nuva's Rua Nuva also looks like a Miru Nuva, not a Hau Nuva, and there's no bad marketing to disagree this time! But no, because the question posed to Greg mentioned the Power Pack specifically and he then gave his standard answer (likely without thinking about it for more than half a second) the "canon" appearance of the Rua is now declared to be a silver Hau, which again, conflicts with every single actual appearance of the mask in-story.
Just ugh. I'm sorry, that has nothing to do with the Kaita themselves, it's just incredibly frustrating to me personally. Because it's the most common sense thing to figure out, but someone had to run to Greg to do the thinking for them, and his vague as balls answer has led to the obviously incorrect choice being declared "canon." It's ridiculous. That's what upsets me about it the most. It's just the ruling of one fan-run website, it means nothing in the long run. It's just so obviously wrong, but you can't convince anyone running the site of that because "Greg said so," and that, apparently, makes it law, no matter how stupid it is. And it's very stupid. I know that's mean, and I feel bad for it, but it's true.
I am plagued by thoughts of Toa Kaita and how their names and titles are determined.
Is every single one unique? That leaves the most room for creativity, and means the result of each fusion is dependent on the personalities of the individual Toa components, which seems like the most narratively satisfying option. But also, if every possible Kaita is unique, how do they avoid overlapping domains? Eventually Valour or Wisdom are going to be really fitting for some other combination of three Toa, or they'll just run out of fancy mental concepts to name themselves after.
Alternatively, do the names, or maybe just the titles, of any given Toa Kaita, depend on the elemental combination used to form them? Does every instance of Ta-Toa+Po-Toa+Onu-Toa result in Akamai? Does every instance of Ga-Toa+Ko-Toa+Le-Toa result in a Toa of Wisdom? I went and learned some math specifically to determine that there are 560 different possible 3-element combinations that can be formed from the 16 Toa elements, assuming all three have to be different, because that makes the most sense to me. 546 if Light and Shadow could not coexist within a single Kaita for some reason, and 455 if you don't count Shadow at all. Those are still really big numbers! But it seems a lot more feasible to come up with 500-ish attributes for each combination to represent than for each of the infinite combinations of individuals to result in something completely unique. But then again, it seems awfully limiting to simply assign a default attribute based on elemental alignment without taking into account the personalities of the constituent Toa at all. Would Vakama, Onewa, and Whenua really result in a Valour combination rather than something more tailored to them? Could Tuyet and Nidhiki really be part of a Wisdom combination?
Then perhaps there is a set number of possible Kaita and which of the limited (but likely still beyond extensive) list of possibilities the fusion forms is dependent on the three Toa's personalities? That feels like it's getting dangerously close to personality-based categorization though, and I've seen enough bad YA to know that's never a good idea.
Is any of this important at all? Oh no, not at all, we only ever see two Toa Kaita in the entire story and even they barely matter, this absolutely isn't the sort of thing that needs to be thought about deeply at all. But here I am, distracted by it anyway.
#bionicle#toa kaita#rua#tsd rants#i think you're right about the masks btw#especially since the toa mata had their golden kanohi by that point anyway#it's not specifically those mask powers that make wisdom or valour#it has more to do with the toa wearing them#(which is another reason the rua shouldn't look like a hau but i digress...)

ok no one asked but imagine how much BETTER the aera/lunafreya and ardyn/lunafreya parallels would have been if a) they’d spent more time on the ardyn and luna dynamic and b) aera had betrayed ardyn instead of being his fridged girlfriend
dotf touches on it briefly, but luna is essentially who ardyn used to be when he was human. a devout healer, self-sacrificial and compassionate to the point that them using their powers to try to protect others was slowly destroying them inside, and they could have had at least one scene where they interacted before the summoning of leviathan where it’s implied that ardyn has hatred for luna too, because she reminds him of when he had hope and thought the gods were just and correct. it would have made the scene at the altar of the tidemother more personal for them both
meanwhile, in episode ardyn, lunafreya and aera having the same face was. not really a super deep design choice beyond them both being oracles and MAYBE trying to draw a parallel between somnus killing aera accidentally, and ardyn killing luna to spite noctis, which. they didn’t HAVE to give them the same face to do that??? BUT imagine if aera had straight up betrayed ardyn. by the time the gods make their decision on who should be king, they’ve decided that ardyn has too much daemon crap inside him to become king, because at this point it’s inevitable that he’ll be corrupted. and it falls to aera to give the verdict, and she’s torn: on the one hand, she loves ardyn, thinks it cruel that his god-given healing powers are the thing condemning him, and knows in her heart that he will be a better and more compassionate king. on the other hand, it’s unthinkable to her that the gods could be wrong. ultimately, she chooses to follow the gods’ wishes over her own judgement and tells somnus, who lures ardyn back to the crystal, tries to kill him, and aera is there and alive to witness how this attempt on ardyn’s life + her betrayal only causes ardyn to be consumed by the starscourge and become an immortal eldritch being. ardyn is sealed up underground to stew in the bitterness of knowing aera and the gods turned against him, and aera has to live with that choice
then lunafreya shows up, with the same face and the same blind devotion to the gods she was raised to revere, and it makes ardyn’s blood boil. BUT THEN in dotf, lunafreya speaks to the spirit of aera who tells her that she made a mistake, and unquestioning devotion to the gods is not the way to live. and luna rolls up to ardyn in the throne room, and ardyn sees the girl with aera’s face asking him to help her do the one thing aera refused to do for him: defy the will of bahamut
idk i just think this would have been neat and tied really well into ffxv’s theme of The Gods Suck, Actually, Why Are We Listening To These Guys and breaking the cycle of history repeating itself

Rant: Vin, Mary, and Taejin's Backstory (on Readers' Reaction)
I won't deny that Lookism plot is unevenly paced (to put it euphemistically). But people's comments on the Webtoon app that Vin's, Mary's and Taejin's backstories are not important annoy me so much.
Yes, Taejin is a new antagonist and most likely was only created as Vin's and Mary's foil. But his backstory is connected to Vin's and Mary's. The hints about Vin's murderous past were given ages ago, the hints about Mary's abruptly ended dream as a judoka were shown a long time ago too. The hints about why music wasn't their actual passion were there since eons ago.
AND VIN AND MARY ARE A PART OF THE OG J-HIGH STUDENTS.
They'd been there since the early chapters of this webtoon. All those years ago. Say whatever you want. That Vin was an asshole and a bully. That Mary was originally only written to provide some repartees for him. Whatever. But they are OG CHARACTERS. They deserve their backstories.

This country has ended up being a freaking joke. Wrestlers who hoisted the tiranga in front of the whole world are being thrashed and arrested and people are forwarding pure bs in whatsapp saying that they are protesting because Haryana will lose their grip over the wrestling community because of some revised rules. These people are going to give up their OLYMPIC MEDALS FREAKING OLYMPIC MEDALS....THE HIGHEST PRESTIGE IN SPORTS. THE THING THEY HAVE SPENT THEIR LIFE WORKING FOR.
I have no words. Shame. Just shame.
