Thinking about the family and Euphrasie talking to each other as Siffrin recovers from craft overuse. And the one thing I keep coming back to is wishcraft and how much everyone shows they know about it.

Like the family only knows as much as Loop told them while Euphrasie dug up her knowledge. Don't have the brain to work out the exact math but I'm imagining everyone in the room carefully gauging each other's answers and how much of their hand to show while Mirabelle stands there in the corner smiling at her superior like yeah! Glad to be home and everyone's safe and sound (:

As someone who messes up names so much, I could only remember Loop’s name from “Your ally Loop! Here to help you with the loops!” And I think it every time I say the word ‘loop’ ever in any context now. Curse you Loop. In comparison about halfway through the game (in my case like a solid 25 hours) I still couldn’t reliably remember Isabeau’s name. (Also, if images cause problems you don’t have to put so many in! I’m guessing most people seeing the liveblog have seen nearly all the game already?)

Technically speaking, we don't have to put any images in at all, but we prefer this format for allowing us to more easily "open dialogue" with the game and also the existence of this liveblog has fully convinced one of our friends to get this game as well so that they can play alongside us. We like the visual element! Also gives us something to look back and reference, later down the line - our usual favorite RPG has an extremely accessible transcript of all of the text in the game that we usually reference back to whenever we need to reference a line of dialogue, but In Stars And Time... doesn't have that, we don't think.

We'd like to be able to look back and see what we've already done, and have a reliable way of seeing what happened, because by gods if our memory fails on us we don't want it to gaslight us into thinking that. Fuck. Isabeau mentioned a line that Mirabelle has, and have that shift our area of characterization for them.

The way ISAT starts at the end of the story is so effective for the themes of loneliness and isolation. At the point in the story the party is at, they're as close to each other as they've ever been. It's the last two days they're going to spend as a team. But they're also all so closed off to each other. Mirabelle is quietly hating herself for not wanting to change as much as she thinks she's supposed to. Odile still hasn't found what she's looking for, and she's probably beginning to think she never will. Bonnie refuses to look at Siffrin's face long enough to think about what happened to his eye. Isabeau can't work up the courage to open up to Siffrin about how he feels. And Siffrin doesn't even know anything about his own past! They deflect with jokes even in their own thoughts!

Yes, they're already a family by the start of ISAT. But the only one who actually expresses all of their emotions is a child who's still trying to navigate what exactly they're feeling. The only one who constantly pays attention to how his friends are feeling is secretly too shy to express how much he cares to the one person who needs it the most. The real hero of the story doesn't think she's grown as a person at all. The smartest person there is also really bad at recognizing when something she's said offends one of the people she's come to care for. And then there's Siffrin, who doesn't actually believe that any of his friends will remember him, and maybe he's afraid he won't remember them either. They think Isabeau is just nice. Baseline behavior for anyone he talks to. They understand Odile better than anyone in the party, but they misunderstand her style of banter just feels like she's being brutally honest. He cares deeply about Mirabelle and can't express it as anything but teasingly making sure she's alright. And he thinks Bonnie hates him because losing an eye to save a kid was something he sees as completely worth it, and he doesn't see how much that terrifies them.

If there wasn't a time loop, they'd all go their separate ways at the end and they'd all feel like shit about it. Bonnie would never forgive themself for being the reason Siffrin lost an eye. Isabeau probably wouldn't go home to Jouvante because none of his fellow defenders were willing to risk their lives to defend Vaugarde. Mirabelle would go on a pilgrimage and fail to recognize how much she's changed once again. Odile would return to Ka Bue, still feeling like she doesn't fit in there. And Siffrin would be alone again, until one day, they wouldn't even remember the faces of the people they'd come to love.

INTO THE LAKE WITH YOU, MUD CHILD

My part of a retroactive art trade with @anxiousapplepie ! "Retroactive" because I was already drawing this before we agreed to make it part of a trade, heheh. December 2nd edit: BEHOLD!... THEIR HALF OF THE TRADE... Eleven whole pages of trade!! Go read it go read it go read it

I read this post about their Role!Swap AU, and, like, multiverse shenanigans? Check. Characters goofing off and having fun? Check. Several opportunities for slapstick humor? Check. Conclusion: I really wanted to draw it. Physical comedy is my specialty. :p

This thing is kinda all over the place composition wise (looking at you, relative sizes of speech bubbles) because there is Too Much going on in these panels and I Did Not plan ahead of time, lmao. This was supposed to be doodlier than it ended up being, so as a growing pain it's a funny jumble of consistency. One of these days I'll be able to doodle without getting carried away. 😂

More rambling and close-ups under the cut

This interaction in particular is what nudged me over the edge to draw this whole thing. I don't know what Fighter Mirabelle's malfunction is when it comes to the Siffrins, but it lets me make Sif the butt of a joke again, so yeehaw! His hat being catapulted out of frame made me laugh when I was thinking of what to do with the composition-complicating hat in question.

Also my personal take is Siffrin is 100% having the time of their life here. Making new(?) friends? Being involved in a fun group activity? Well worth inhaling some puddle water and having to go jump in The Lake to wash the mud off later.

Bonnie being so furious they changed art styles wasn't in my original plan, but I'm so glad I thought of it on a whim because it made me laugh Every Time I looked at their face. 😂

Time taken on this whole thing was 42 hours and 50 minutes. AND. I KNOW THAT SOUNDS BAD. IF YOU KNOW I'M TRYING TO SPEED UP MY ART PROCESS. But this project gets a special pass. This was the farthest out of my art comfort zone I've been in a while! 13 (mostly) full-body characters at various complicated angles, 2 backgrounds, learning to use CSP's perspective rulers, effects I'm not used to like water splashes, etc etc. I made progress on speeding up sketching & line art as well! Some of the lines you see are just extremely cleaned up sketch. I was able to let myself fudge things more too. For example, Mira's dress is a very "dude just trust me" simplification because I don't know how the clothes folds would work at that angle. ^^;;

So while there's still a handful of things I'm not happy with, it's worth it for the learning experience and perfectionism-busting progress! Also for the sake of drawing silliness, of course.

Oh, lastly; the KO sprite is the one from in-game, so it was made by insertdisc5 and not me.

More theatre stuff! I've started to put all the theatre doodles I do under a tag called "isat curtain call" because I wanted to be organized lol

MIRABELLE! Mirabelle is kind of a powerhouse at the theatre. She acts in a lot of the plays they put on (and gets really nervous before going on stage). She has lots of folks who are her neighbors or friends who attend shows and always overwhelm her with tons of flowers. She appreciates it but it can be a bit much! She's always around to help- She will show up for set construction, set decor, lighting design... anything- and all on top of acting! She's even the theatre's health and safety rep! (the little bit at the bottom is inspired by true events... yeah...)

Bonnie!! Bonnie started volunteering with the theatre recently after coming to see a pantomime for Peter Pan. They love to help out with the snack bar, and even wear nice clothing for the shows to look all professional. They also usher sometimes! All with adult supervision of course. They are allowed to come help with set decor (painting the set!) but NOT set construction. They sometimes convince their older sister to stop by the theatre when everyone else is working to drop off homemade goodies. They also like to hang out in the sound/light booth, the stage looks so different from up there! They're close with Odile, who shows them a ton of stuff. They hope that sometime they can also start doing the light cues during a show. They don't want to work near Siffrin backstage, even though that's something they could perhaps start doing now.

Sometimes... it feels like there's something in the theatre, hanging out in the catwalks, judging silently. Maybe... someone... But if you turn around to see them, they're gone! The theatre might be haunted, who knows. That seems the most plausible theory... Siffrin tends to spend a lot of time on the catwalks as well. Perhaps he'd know more about this mysterious spirit of the theatre?

The Spirit of the Theatre! (Loop!) They're always around. They're actually convinced that they're not able to leave the theatre. The hat? They stole it from the costume room! It makes hiding that glow ever so easy- Sometimes they steal coats or matching robes from there, just to make hiding easier. They're so knowledgeable in all things theatre, especially the theatre the group operates out of. Sometimes they spend their time alone at the theatre straightening up the props room or making sure all the actor's props and costumes are in their proper places. It really seems like they consider themselves an integral (and invisible) part of the team. They like to watch from afar, that's all. Meeting Siffrin was an accident, one that The Spirit of the Theatre couldn't avoid. Now they have to deal with Siffrin coming to talk to them often, even looking for advice. It's unclear how long they've been there, and when asked for a name, will only say they're the "Spirit of the Theatre."

And that's it from me today I promise I am normal lol I am having fun watching this all form in front of my eyes a little. It's mostly silly goofy stuff and as much as I'd love to stick to canon best I can, I may have to fiddle with it to get it to make sense... especially for Loop :) but if you have any ideas or stuff my inbox is so open I love talking about this- these drawings were stacked up from the last couple of days just me preparing to post... teehee!!

My first attempt at a lineup, before it was stopped in its tracks by Isabeau. It’s a little crazy that I was working on these guys for so long that my art improved so much between the takes…

And my favourite sketches! Ratdile’s really nice to draw

I’m going to be honest, this isn’t even a rat/mouse isat au, because half the characters (including Siffrin??) aren’t even rats or mice, and some of them may not even be rodents!! I couldn’t keep myself contained! I’ve been working on this on and off since the end of February, and I kept falling out of because a. certain fighter was making it difficult for me. Not naming names, though.

Notes, notes… (too many notes)…

- Siffrin, Mirabelle and Isabeau all have wrapped their tails around themselves to keep them out of the way in combat, and to mimic their belts for the character design.

- Siffrin and Loop aren’t mice, actually. Or rats. They’re small gliders, which are either possums (marsupials) or squirrels (rodents). I’ve been going back and forth.

- I modelled Siffrin off the feathertail glider, which has a body and head length of 6.5 to 8cm, and is an Australian possum. I don’t really think of the Island as being Australia?? I’m just really partial to our animals and think they’re cool.. I think someone could make the argument for Australian Sif the same way you could for so many different cultures, but that someone isn’t going to be me.

- What’s important! Is that feathertail gliders! Are small!! And nocturnal! And they can fly! In the sky!! And they sleep in trees all day. And they’re very cute. They’d also have flatter faces than the rodents, which could be uncanny to them?

- Siffrin would be capable of gliding if they unwrapped their tail and took off his cloak and hat, but I don’t think Loop would be anymore. Their tail is too unevenly weighted.

- Mirabelle also isn’t a mouse or rat. She’s modelled after the mouse-tailed dormouse, which is pretty similar to a mouse but they hibernate, are often nocturnal and have fluffy tails (except the mouse-tailed one). They have a body and head length of around 8 - 13cm (I think??). Mirabelle needed to have a scaly tail so it would look like her rope belt, but I liked the idea of her being a dormouse because of the dormont pun and I think she would get stressed trying to balance the expectation of Changing with the need to hibernate.

- Isabeau is a brown rat!! They’re one of the two main rats! They’re big (body and head length of 15 to 28cm!!) and round, and fat, and I love them. He should be (at min) like twice as tall as Siffrin, but I shrunk him down in the lineup a bit because making him bigger just made drawing him harder. And I was already having enough trouble drawing him.

- Isabeau has been a consistent hassle and a pain to rat-ify, and he has delayed this project single-handedly by months. The most important part of Isabeau’s silhouette (to me) is his arms and shoulders and his big sleeves, and the really fluid and strong poses he makes with them. Rats have no arm game at ALL. They’re like. The t-rexes of mammals. Is a comparison I will make. So trying to give Isarat arms and shoulders always looks off, because rats don’t have very visual arms or shoulders, but go too far in the other direction, and it doesn’t look like Isabeau! Very frustrating. Also, rats just aren’t built for pants. Isabeau wears pants. Annoying.

- Odile is a black rat, the other main sort of rat! They’re not as big as the brown rat (body and head length of 12.75 to 18.25cm, really specific numbers) and tend to be a lot slimmer and pointier. They have a global distribution, including across both Europe and Asia. They’re very good rats and my friends.

- Bonnie is a pocket mouse!! Pocket mice are very small (the species I modelled Bonnie after, the rock pocket mouse, tends to have a body and head length of around 7 to 7.5cm) but they have very long tails! (and tails of 8.4 to 11.2cm!!)

- Importantly, they have cheek pouches that they keep their snacks inside, like little seeds. This is Bonnie behaviour.

- Euphrasie (The Head Mousemaiden…) was… maybe a dormouse? Given her fluffy tail? But she could’ve just Changed it to be like that. I never really settled on a species for her, which ended up kinda showing. She’s Changed so much she defies taxonomy.

- Like Siffrin and Loop, the King is also a glider. He’s only in my sketches, because like Isabeau, he’d just be too big and it would be too much effort for my poor hands to draw. I modelled him after the southern greater glider (also an Australian marsupial…). He would be on the bigger side of a body and head length of 35 to 46cm, which would certainly be big enough to grab one of the smaller kiddos in his hand if he needed.

- And like Loop, the King can’t glide anymore. He’s weighed himself down by tying the tails of other gliders to his fur, which resembles his hair. The armour also doesn’t help.

after sitting on this game in my steam wishlist for ages, I finally gave it a try when another one of my friends started it, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite rpgs (and games in general) of all time. the emotional rollercoaster this game put me through is unparalleled. so obviously i needed to turn all the main characters into ponies and funny animals.

Notes on my reasoning and thoughts below! (Including major game spoilers!)

As for the sonic character animals the reasons are a lot more simple also i didnt for au lore crazy with them. theyre just furries now: Siffrin- he literally goes nya. he makes cat mouths all the time. they also like silently hanging out with their loved ones, agile and sneaky, etc. Mirabelle- she is so fucking nervous all the time. a little guy seemed fitting. Also, unintentionally, her being a mouse with her rapier makes her look like the tale of despereaux guy Isabeau- a supportive, happy go lucky guy being made a dog seemed pretty obvious, but i wanted to be a little more creative and thoughtful than that, so i specifically went for a smarter dog breed: a collie :] kind of like herding he also brings and corrals the group together Odile- suggestion of a friend, a yellow-throated marten :] just looked really cool and very odile. simple as that Bonnie- wombat-- suggestion from a friend, too :] But in general the idea was a burrowing animal, because they're digging in the ground for tubers to me.

random 9pm bonding earring headcanons:

you take out one earring and leave it blank if you're widowed/not seeking a partner at all (someone tell mirabelle about this)

if you're bonded but you're open to more partners you just put a blank set of studs in another piercing to signal that you're not monogamous/exclusive and so that people don't feel like they're overstepping by flirting with you

people exchanging bonding earrings at the same is considered the vaugardian equivalent of an unrealistic hallmark trope - most partnerships are like "one person makes an earring and gives it to their partner(s) and THEN the other ones are made"

related to the last point, it's common to just go ahead and start wearing your one bonding earring and putting in a random earring set as the second exchanged set while the other partner(s) finish their earrings

it's considered gauche to wear revoked bonding earrings as a matching set BUT. it's not like the general public knows what someone's revoked earring looks like. which is why people do it at parties where they know their ex is going to be there. petty drama

if you're intending to bond with someone from outside of vaugarde who doesn't have their ears pierced, you are meant to wait until your partner voluntarily pierces their ears before you start making a bonding earring

if your partner does not have one or both of their ears, or cannot pierce them for a medical or personal reason, you can clip the earrings to the collar of your shirt or on a belt on your hip

A quick sting of pain shoots through your head. You can't be bothered to ask anymore.

You hold your breath as you watch it open, revealing the almost pure darkness inside, almost spilling out of the room like water that's been kept still by a dam for too long. Cold air and the unpleasant scent of metal and salt hits you, mixing with the unbearable smell of caramel to create a dreadful combination.

A light flickers inside, cutting sharply through the darkness. You almost don't hear the footsteps, a rhythm quiet and yet familiar. But before you realize why exactly you know that sound, the way it would only come from someone who's learned to be quiet, who's supposed to be fast and stealthy-

You see... another shade, in the darkness. One that hurts to look at, one that feels wrong, as if the world itself was not meant to contain it. You feel sick.

You avert your eyes as you hear them get closer.

✨️: ...Oh, Mirabelle...!

✨️: You're finally here to join us! How wonderful~

✨️: But... why did you bring them with you? Is this some sort of joke?

🪨: What... are you?

✨️: Oh you wouldn't know me.

✨️: But don't you worry, Fighter~ Soon enough, you won't have to think about anything anymore!

You grip your rapier tightly.

Loop freezes, looking at you.

The darkness behind them begins to move.

mirabelle says she can no longer remember what the person who worked there looked like. this is SUCH a conspicuous detail that nobody ever talks about.

like, she starts the sentence as if she has something to say - "They looked like..." and then there's that long pause and she forgets.

clearly, clearly, clearly this person was tragically erased.

i see two possibilities here:

one. the person who worked there was from the island, but was working in the House when it disappeared. the frantic writings, the desperate clawing at the globe, the research into colors, it was all them trying to figure out what happened to their home. eventually, they had enough and decided that the only path left was to go there themself. they promptly had all memory of yhem deleted just like their homeland.

i don't really like this one because we don't really know if going there would even be possible, let alone erase you from memory. maybe the universe would just lead you away if you try. maybe you'd just die when you get too close, like what happen to siffrin when he tries to say its name.

two: the person who worked there was WAS on the island when it vanished, and so they vanished along with it. all of the frantic, desperate research in that room is euphrasie, trying to figure out what happened to this person. perhaps they were her friend, or a family member, or a lover. someone important.

i like this one a lot because not only is it just a lot simpler, but it explains a big mystery as well: why does euphrasie know about wish craft? if her life was this intertwined with that of someone from the island, and then afterwards she spent a lot of time researching the island, it makes sense that she would know about wish craft, doesn't it?

For the "A Loop For The Ride" AU, I imagine that once Loop and their "friends' reach a proper point in starting a new adventure, depending on what area is chosen, the person who lives in that location will see through Loop's disguise, and realize it wasn't actually Siffrin, before the world loops back to right as soon as Loop kills Siffrin Also, a bit of writing in "Keep Reading" for this scene, since this would be the first spot that the party decides to go to (it's a forced event, on the second loop, however, Loop would get to pick different spots) (Gets a little heavy near the end, so be warned)

Requesting Odile advice !!

Growing up I loved spending time with my grandma's Odiles. They were so sweet and were great companions for the rest of my grandma's life. Now that I'm older and might have the money for the care supplies, I would like to look into getting an Odile. I'm coming here because I wanted an honest unbiased opinion on if i could care for an Odile. I work 6 days a week and am usually resting at home otherwise. I really enjoyed just sharing a space with my grandma's Odile too. I don't have a lot of space for a big enclosure either, and I don't have a yard. Would a screened outdoor patio/balcony be ok? I live on the ground floor. I was also considering letting her have free roaming in my main room/living room when I'm home to supervise. Would that be overly dangerous for an isatling? I want my Odile (when I'm able to meet and care for her) to feel welcome and loved, I'm just not quite sure how to go about it. Especially regarding enrichment- I'm not sure if isatling playdates would be productive/enough or if I should wait when I can commit to an Odile and a friend.

Overall, Odiles are a very self sufficient species. They’re able to entertain themselves for a good while, provided they have a well-furnished enclosure and environment with many things to observe or relax in.

Despite that, your main concern is likely to be keeping her entertained & balancing her social needs. Odiles do enjoy their privacy, but cannot be left completely alone for absurdly long periods of time. Unfortunately, many people seem to think Odiles are a completely hands-off kind of isatling that doesn’t require interaction with caretakers or other Isatlings, but that’s not the case at all!

Do try to get any size enclosure your space can accommodate for. Odile enclosures are typically wide instead of tall: fitting one into a windowsill would work, so long as the cage has a proper cover & won’t heat up in the sun.

I’d say that, when you are home, letting her free roam or be near you when you’re doing just about anything is a good idea, as long as you’ve ensured it’s safe for her. This applies for any free roam isatling. Don’t let her roam if you have animals that are not trained to be around Isatlings. Provide gentle ramps onto furniture for her to climb up (I suggest brands like SturdyBuildsetz, or if you want more “aesthetic” ones then try MobileLivingMolly. But you can also make them at home!)

A screened patio should be fine for being outside, so long as it’s craft proofed and she isn’t left unsupervised overnight.

I don’t think it’d be an awful idea for you to get an Odile, but with concerns to her socialization, I’d suggest getting her a buddy. A Siffrin would be your best bet, especially if plan for them to free roam your house, but there’s plenty of other options to choose from. I wouldn’t suggest a Bonnie simple due to the fact Bonlings do need a Petronille that they’re in regular or direct contact with.
