Tarot Tip 1# WHAT ARE TAROT?
Let's put the basis to tarot. Tarot is a deck of 78 cards: 22 which are called Major Arcanas and 75 which are called Minor Arcanas. The Minor arcanas are figures going from 1 to 10, with court figures like a King, a Queen, a Knight and a Knave.
The Minor Arcanas are divided in 4 families, related to the 4 elements:
Tumblr media
Wands with Fire: they are linked to the Zodiac Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). They represent Action.
Cups with Water: they are linked to Water signs like Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio and represent Emotions.
Pentacles with Earth: linked to the earth signs of Capricorn, Virgo and Taurus, they represent materiality, work, money, and professionnal career.
Swords with Air: they are linked to Air Signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. They represent thoughts, our mental state, lies and truths, immuable as well as the hard ones to swallow.
The Minor Arcanas represent human actions. It is what matter you can take in hand: stay or leave, speak or shut up, doing a good deed or harm someone, think or dismiss a thought. They also represent the Other's actions towards us, good and bad.
The Major Arcanas are quite mysterious and the significance of a card is rooted in occultism, sometimes on religion, and this is what the figures tell us. They are inherited from a 500 years old History of Tarot at least.
The oldest Tarots may date back from the Renaissance Era. The Major Arcanas represent in Tarot the things we cannot really control, the things we have to undergo from Universe (call it like you want: God, Destiny, Fate...). But it is not engraved in hard stone. It does not mean you cannot change your actions. The actions that happened in the Past are immutable, but you still can control your words and your actions.
Each Tarot card has a special message and is also attributed to a planet or zodiac Sign. Depending of the kind of deck you buy, imagery may differ. Some decks like the Tarot de Marseille are less illustrated whereas the Ryder-Waite Smith is an excellent tool for beginners!
Tumblr media
Arcana n°0 or 1 depending on the decks is the Fool: it represents a character walking down a path going to a cliff. He seems happy and is escorted by a dog.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°1 is the Magician: he has a wand, a sword, a pentacle and a cups and seems to do an experiment that allies all the elements for his purpose. One hand is pointing to the sky and the other the earth: as says Occultism, it is As above, so Below.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°2 is the High Priestess: she is generally represented with a moon crescent and seems stern.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°3 is the Empress: it is usually the representation of a woman with regalia and royal attributes. Sometimes, depending on the deck, she may be represented as a pregnant woman, adding to her powers, the major fertility trait.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°4 is the Emperor: like the Empress, he is represented with regalia and embodies power.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°5 is the Pope or The Hierophant: he is represented as an austere man with two people bowing to him.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°6 is the Lovers: usually, the lovers are represented by a man and a woman embrassing each other.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°7 is the Chariot: it is the representation of a warrior on a chariot pulled by two sphinxes.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°8 is Justice: it is the representation of Justice with weighing scales and usually, a woman who is blind.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°09 is the Hermit: it is the picture of a monk-like man with a lamp.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°10: is the representation of The Wheel of Fortune. It is usually represented as a kind of wheel that can turn and have results good or bad.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°11 is Strength and represents a character taming a Lion.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°12 is the Hanged Man. It is a strange hanging because only one foot is and he is hanging head down. Somehow HE chose to be in this disposition.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°13 is the Death arcana. You have NOTHING to fear, I promise. It is very rare that this card signifies Death. More of its significance implies transformation and a change in your life. Usually, a skeleton knight is riding a horse on it.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°14 is Temperance. It shows a character sharing water in two different cups.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°15 is the Devil and usually represents a Demon, sometimes a female demon like Lilith.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°16 is the Tower and represents a crumbling tower, inspired by the destruction of the Babel Tower in the Bible.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°17 is the Star: it shows a woman getting water from a pond, just like the Aquarius symbol.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°18 is the Moon: usually, there is a Moon and 3 special characters: 2 dogs who seem to fight and a lobster who may have provoked one of them, but he is so small nobody sees him...
Tumblr media
Arcana n°19 is the Sun: usually, there is the Sun and a man and a woman on it.
Tumblr media
Arcana n°20 is Judgement and could echo to Judgement day, because there is usually an angel with a trumpet on it.
Tumblr media
Finally, Arcana n°21 is The World. It usually represents a central character with a bay laurel decoration and surrounded by four characters: an ox, a lion, an eagle and an angel.
The Futur Tarot Tip will detail the signification of a card. Tell me bellow which card you want me to begin with, a minor arcana card or a major arcana card?
By the way, I am ok with reblogging but PLEASE NO PLAGIARISM.

Nine of Swords
Tarot card back from May 2020. Edgar Poe seemed like a good choice for a card about anxieties and nightmares. I feel very deeply for people throughout history who had untreated mental disorders.
This was one of the first pieces where most of the color was traditional rather than digital. I was starting to branch out in the types of colored inks I was purchasing (not that there's a lot of color on this page) and this would be the beginning of starting to explore color more thoroughly. I had always been self conscious of color, thinking I was no good at it; I had ruined many pencil drawings by coloring them, but I'm finally at a place now where I can apply color with abandon. Thank you, Nine of Swords, for being a part of that path forward.

This is the die line I created. It's definitely going to need adjustments. If I go with the die cut (this shape) cards instead of rectangle, then the manufacturers will adjust the card die line and the box.
Here’s the rough idea of the box. I still haven’t decided if the cards will be this shape or rectangular. It’s going to depend on the prices, but for now, enjoy this mockup I created to simulate the box for the die cut cards. I designed the die line and cut it out to make this sample box. Thanks for following my work! Please share, like, and comment. Email for commissions, no DMs please.

“…the symbolism in the Five of Wands suggests that there is form of conflict in one’s life. This may be an existing conflict or one that is brewing and may eventually blow up in one’s face. It may also depict a problem in communication, for example in a situation where no one really wants to listen to the other - meaning that no agreement or understanding takes place. The five men may signify problems in a group of people who are not patient enough to listen to what anyone else is saying. They only want to be heard, and since none of the others will listen, they all argue at once.”

5 of Pentacles
Tumblr media
Representations
conflict, loss of some kind, material trouble
Meanings
Interpretation 1: love of two people surviving in crippling conditions
The people, though bent and crippled, are surviving. This card may indicate love, especially that of two people holding together in a bad situation. This relationship acts as a trauma bond: hardship has become one of the major factors keeping them together. There are fears that relief from material troubles may strain their unity, enabling fear of change.
Interpretation 2: the people cannot see the church
The people do not see the sanctuary. Human beings can get used to anything, and when they do they will often not see opportunities for change; resisting an end to their problems. Foolish pride and fearful independence rooted in not accepting help
Interpretation 3: the doorless church
The church has no doors, and the people are shut out of the sanctuary.
Outside forces - social institutions, family, friends, etc. - cannot help us and we must struggle against the problems on our own.
The people are rejecting traditional societal doctrines are suffering the consequences.
Symbolisms
Church: sanctuary, rest and relief from the storm

Seven of Pentacles
This piece is all the way back from July 2020. This card depicts the Iroquois legend of The Lazy Boys Who Became the Pleiades, a constellation that bears great importance in many cultures around the world. In particular I am using the version passed down by Jesse Cornplanter of the Senecan people, the variation differing only in that the last boy who glances back down to Earth falls, becoming the first pine.
The Seven of Pentacles is a card about harvesting the long term projects and goals you've set into motion. I chose the Iroquois legend because it's a story I grew up with, and which stuck to me because of its haunting imagery. The boys spend all their time dancing instead of assisting the elders in the hunt, so when they come in for food, they are denied, as a means of teaching them a lesson. Rather than move them to change their ways, this merely motivates them to dance more. Eventually they become so light-headed with hunger that their feet begin to lift from the ground, their bodies becoming so light. To the rest of the tribe's horror, the seven boys drift off into the skies. One boy, upon hearing a woman of the village call after him, turns back and falls to the Earth, becoming the first pine.
What is the lesson to be learned, here? I like to think it's a lesson that everyone in the community has a different purpose, and that not everyone is made to hunt. Some are artists and engage in dance, yet they are just as valuable as those who physically place food upon the table, and should be allowed to eat. Otherwise you lose a very essential part of your society. Then again, being an artist, I am incredibly biased towards this way of thinking.
I chose sketches of Smoke Dancing, as it is a competitive dance meant to impress with flair. It is a modern dance, really only made popular in the 1990s, though its origin is hard to place. Likewise the events of this legend take place "a long time ago," and cannot be exactly placed either. Mixing in this modern dance is a way of making the tale timeless, as again I chose the dance for its joy of the dance itself and its performative competition, as I imagine the boys caught up in their dances that worldly needs such as hunger are easy to ignore.
Insofar as how this legend fits in the card's meaning, the harvest of the village in abandoning the boys is to lose them, and the harvest of the boys' dancing is to do so eternally in the skies.
I suppose in general I wish society placed a greater value on art, and that is why this tale has stuck with me. Art, in many ways, offers immortality and a guiding light.
This is one of my charity pieces in my shop where 100% of the proceeds goes to a specific charity. This one goes to AISES (American Indian Science and Engineering Society) which is a program my friend used to get into NASA. Being that this card is both Native and celestial, AISES seemed like an appropriate choice.
You can purchase a print here.

Continuing from my previous post: I am now recreating the skeleton puppet front view. I turned to my favorite anatomy book references and worked first on paper. I like to use colorful markers or highlighters, starting with yellow, building to darker colors. I add white to block out where I can the parts I'm not keeping. This sharpie is oil based and didn't work as well as a posca pen, but that's okay. It's just process work. I then go over that with tracing paper. After the tracing paper, I scan the line art. Then I put it in Photoshop. I straighten the image out and create a new layer for the next step. I used the vertical symmetry option via the butterfly icon in Photoshop CC to create a mirrored drawing. That's the last step in Photoshop. Next I need to recreate it in Adobe Illustrator. You can see how much my drawing's improved with photo reference and using the symmetry tool. Illustrator will give the puppet scalability for the final digital line artworks. The end stage of all 78 tarot cards will be pen and ink.
