day 13: the hanged man

Major Arcana: Justice

This piece is back from late April 2019 and features one of the most explosive baritone arias from my favorite opera Rigoletto by Verdi. In this scene, "Cortigiani, vil razza," Rigoletto is certain his daughter is being held hostage by his employer the Duke and his courtiers who encourage the Duke's lecherous behavior, and he demands her release. The courtiers do not take Rigoletto's demands seriously and the aria changes from explosive fire, anger, and threats of physical violence to Rigoletto on his knees begging for even a scrap of empathy. It is one of the most heartbreaking scenes I have ever experienced, how in one moment this character is filled with righteous anger, and in the next is begging to be seen as a human being.

The most influential recording on me has been the one with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the role of Rigoletto, with Rennata Scotto as Gilda and Carlo Bergonzi as the Duke. At the moment of posting, that whole recording is available to listen to here.

I also really love Sherrill Milnes as Rigoletto; he always brings a majesty and heartbreaking quality to his work. Here he is singing the aria that this card depicts.

Day 9 of Inktober

The hermit is a symbol for self-discovery, solitude and introspection. He wields a staff and the star of Solomon, a six-pointed star and a symbol of wisdom, on top of a mountain, isolated from the rest of the world. But the light of the star doesn't reach far and illuminates only the next few steps, and not the entire journey ahead.

Um, of course I'm gonna put a lynx on my favorite card.

The Hermit is usually depicted on top of a snowy mountain. I had a sketch with a lynx on a mountain for this card, but the format I use (a bit smaller than A5) seemed too small and cramped, so I decided to go for a close-up instead.

I also ditched the lamp with the six-pointed star, and just put it on his forehead instead. Wisdom from within, peak introvercy, etc etc.

Bonus fun fact, I started this artwork in December. Oh well.

Major Arcana: The Empress

Another tarot piece from April 2019. The Empress and Emperor are in direct conversation with one another in my deck, as they depicted my masculine and feminine sides at the time. The femme here is depicted with no breasts, for that is the kind of feminine I envisioned in myself. It would be later that year when I would finally get top surgery and be able to live as this ideal version of myself.

The Emperor and Empress are both depicted with my favorite animals: the elephant and the tiger, respectively. My masculinity is always softer and my femininity has an edge to it. I gave The Empress a tiger for her ferocity, but also because The Empress is often depicted with new beginnings. The tigress has a cub: a new generation of ideas waiting to be nurtured and welcomed into the world.
