Despite my current level of Busy, I really wanted to meet @fuckyeahlabynight's Fang Fest challenge! Tarot is such a fun idea. 😁 Earlier this month, I ran a poll on what to draw, and "portraits of different canon characters" won by landslide. Here's the first half! As a further treat, I paired each character with a flower whose meaning brought out more elements of their character and card. All flower meanings are from A Victorian Flower Dictionary by Mandy Kirkby. Find it on Indiebound here.
If you'd like to squeak in entries for this challenge, check out the kick off post here! I babble more about my character & flower choices below the cut.
Day 1 - Ramona as the Fool - Daisies double down on the "Innocence" theme of The Fool. From the Clan Novels to her appearance in LA by Night, Ramona goes on a wild journey which attempts to break her. Against all odds, she survives and comes out stronger, choosing kindness, art, and whimsy in LA by Night instead of brooding over the shitstorm she was forced through. It's like, at first Ramona was innocent, then she chooses the innocent happiness of small joys. Yeah, she'll do what she needs to survive—but she doesn't let the experience overtake who she chooses to be.
Day 2 - Ambrosio Luis Moncado as The Magician - HEAR ME OUT. He's the Magician Upright and Reversed. Moncado has plans upon plans. They succeed much more often than not, but Moncado also gets in his own way sometimes. The flowers are geraniums. The pencil thin leaves convey ingenuity—yes, Embracing Lucita was a good, unexpected idea—but red geraniums indicate stupidity. Maybe if he drank more respect women juice, she would return his calls.
Day 3 - Ming Xiao as the High Priestess - In her mortal and immortal roles, Ming Xiao acts as an advisor and knowledge keeper for her communities. She also has a terrible habit of withdrawing and not sharing tidbits. Maidenhair fern seemed a perfect fit: it references the feminine and it conveys a sense of secrecy.
Day 4 - Emma Blake as the Empress - I think Emma Blake deserves nice things and barely got the chance to stand on her own. Her "flower" is actually wheat. Emma is essential to the The Victorian Trilogy, just like wheat is a building block of civilization. The narrative wants to grind her down and devour her, like the violence done to wheat to make bread. Wheat is a staple—but for the gluten intolerant it's a poison. There's also the association with Ceres, the mother who, in her rage and sorrow, created winter over her stolen child. I'm like, really happy with this pairing, can you tell
Day 5 - Baron Samedi as The Emperor - What a fun dude. Though he's not always a good father/sire, Baron Samedi takes care of his clan, even at the risk of his own life. The leaves in his pocket are sorrel, which stands for parental affection.
Day 6 - Hesha Ruhadze as The Hierophant - Hesha's story is all wrapped up with faith and spiritual institutions: either following their precepts or secretly defying them for a greater good. Why is he naked you ask? the monocle stays ON during sex Ignore that. Look at the passionflower. Look up a picture of a passionflower. It stands for faith and looks like an alien.
Day 7 - Ilias cel Frumos and Sascha Vykos as The Lovers - This choice was very obvious, haha. Without Ilias, Vykos' life is full of disharmony, arguments, and hatred. United, they blossom. The flowers above them are lilies of the valley for "return of happiness." The drawing is a redraw of this picrew
Day 8 - Karsh as The Chariot - Just like chamomile ("energy in adversity"), Karsh does not quit! Cut him down; he returns stronger! In v5 Modern Nights, I think Karsh would be conflicted over his position in the Camarilla, and the Chariot brings out that tension. B. Dave Walters performed a fantastic Karsh in LA by Night, and I used his outfit and picture from We're Alive: Frontier as an artistic reference.
Day 9 - Halim Bey as Strength - Halim is a gentleman, through and through. He gently persuades, deftly handles his British customers, practices compassion gracefully, and endures like one million billion microaggressions without snapping. That takes strength. The dahlias are for dignity, which he has in spades. The decolonization comment came from me wondering how he feels about the British monarchy these nights. Like how Hesha is wrapped up with faith, Halim is wrapped up in colonization.
Day 10 - Aristotle de Laurent as The Hermit - This one was easy. Since he finished The Book of Nod, Aristotle seems to be quite content puttering around his collection and directing Lucita, Anatole, and Beckett to dig sites. He was The Hermit Upright. With their associations in mythology, queerness, and loneliness, hyacinths seemed a good pick. The purple shades add in the message "please forgive me," which reference his and Beckett's falling out. When he betrayed Beckett, Aristotle's Hermit card Reversed.
Day 11 - Beckett as The Wheel of Fortune - This card fit the (un)lucky Cuthbert "Gehenna is a cycle" Beckett so well! Aristotle and Beckett's portraits mirror each other, because I wanted to tease out their potential for reconciliation. I've drawn Beckett before, but this one came out looking younger and softer to me, which calls back to Beckett's neonate days. The two chrysanthemums symbolize truth (i.e. his constant goal) in British culture. In China, chrysanthemums are, among other things, symbols of the queer male community. Cause, yanno, they kind of look like buttholes. 😅😂 I had to do it do 'em okay

#4 for the wip game!
Thank u for the ask! :D
you and whose (kid) army? is a really silly hualian fic, with a different meeting pre-third ascension :')
the main idea is that Hua Cheng is trying to ignore the increasing number of prayers he's receiving from kids. But he's a bit of a softie and ends up punishing people that actively abuses kids, or granting the kids requests (they tend to ask for small things, like a bit of food, or temporary shelter). Sometimes he sends Yin Yu to deal with them, though.
Ofc that doesn't make his following decrease!
He doesn't acknowledge them properly until one kid tries to offer him his blood to get his petition granted. Hua Cheng gets angry and forbids that kind of offering from now on, heals the boy using one of his butterflies, and stays for a bit against his best judgment. The conversation gets him to mention he's looking for a flower.
"What flower are you looking for?" "The most beautiful and rarest of them all"
He disappear again, already regretting everything. He has better things to do than entertain stupid brats!
The story gets around anyway, and the kids start offering Hua Cheng flowers because they took the story literally. They offer all kinds of flowers, even paper flowers and drawings.
The idea is that, since Xie Lian is fond of kids, the slowly increasing army of kids is eventually going to reach him, so Xie Lian gets to hear about this mysterious and powerful Ghost King, and maybe he thinks of Wu Ming and his flowers, but doesn't look more into this, because he gets trampled in the kingdom of Banyue :'c
And talking about Banyue! In this story, she's the one that prays to Hua Cheng, because she found Xie Lian General Hua badly wounded, so she mentions this to Hua Cheng: she needs urgent help for general Hua and he's the only one powerful enough she can think of in that moment. She offers some shanyue fern leaves, because there's no flowers there but at least a rare plant should count, right?
Who would've thought that she offered Hua Cheng the exact flower he had spent so many years looking for!
:D that's it, that's the idea for the fic ahaha

As promised, Dr. Two Brains helped get the four heroes situated, then he went to his car and drove back home to make dinner for his daughter. The henchmen acted friendly around the heroes rather than nervous. They asked if any of them wanted to play cards which Electric Blur, Hydro, and Fern Trap agreed to. Atomic Steele ignored them and stood near a window, away from the others. He looked through the window and observed what he could see of the city. He frowned as he thought back to Wordgirl and her views on villains. She was obviously too naive and trusting of the villains since she was just a child. She didn’t realize what those selfish parasites were capable of. It was obvious that Wordgirl needed to be taught how dangerous and manipulative villains really were. Lunar Red was an obvious example. That vile woman had a high body count and a long list of property destruction. Wordgirl would easily be defeated and likely pulverized if she ever encountered Lunar Red. In his mind, Atomic was making a side mission along with their current mission. He and the rest of the Newport Four would take over as Wordgirl’s mentors. She obviously needed positive hero figures to look up too. Atomic Steele gave a brief smile. He knew his father would be proud of him helping out a young and naive hero like Wordgirl, molding her into a better hero. “Becky, I swear your school needs to organize their field trips better.” Dr. Two Brains complained. It was the day of Becky’s field trip, but due to some last minute issues with the destination aka a pipe bursting in the hall of soap, the science museum trip became a bust. Luckily the history museum was open and available for Becky’s fifth grade class to visit. The mad scientist was annoyed that the principal and teachers decided to inform the chaperones about the change on the day of the field trip rather than some time before. “I know dad, things weren’t very organized due to the sudden cancellation. Luckily you aren’t banned from the history museum.” Becky remarked, trying to cheer her dad up. “We still get to spend time together.” Dr. Two Brains gave his daughter a small smile. He was glad about that. At dinner, he and Becky only talked about the new heroes and what Mrs. Botsford had planned to do about the grocery store mess. The District Attorney had decided that the mad scientist would do community service though at the park rather than the grocery store since he wasn’t trusted to work near all that cheese. Becky, as Wordgirl, said she would bring this up to the mad scientist and have him call the DA back. Dr. Two Brains agreed to the punishment and let Mrs. Botsford know. That was all they discussed. Neither felt comfortable bringing up the conversation they had when Becky was taking her dad back to the lair. Two Brains didn’t want to make his daughter feel anymore guilty and Becky didn’t want to make her dad anymore upset. Soon the bus arrived at the history museum and the students as well as adults filed outside the bus. They clustered around the entrance as Miss Davis, Becky’s teacher, gave instructions on how the kids should behave in the museum. She then instructed the chaperones to call her on her cell phone if there is an emergency and remain with the group of kids they are assigned with. Dr. Two Brains barely paid attention to the names of each group Miss Davis called out. He perked his ears up when the teacher called out his name. “Okay those who are going to be chaperoned by Dr. Two Brains are Becky Boxleitner, Violet Heaslip, Todd Scoops Ming, Rose Franklin, and Tobey McCallisert the Third.” Miss Davis exclaimed. Both Two Brains and Becky silently groaned with displeasure. ‘Great, I'm stuck with babysitting the boy genius.’ The mad scientist muttered to himself. He then gazed at Tobey who seemed equally happy about being watched by the mouse man. “I feel sorry for those innocent children. They shouldn’t have to be paired up with a those three villain influences.”
“Help Me! Somebody Save me!” Becky dropped the book she was reading with a thud as her face became a mix of extreme alarm and worry. Normally Becky would have a cool head whenever she heard a cry for help. She would simply transform into Wordgirl and Bob would transform into Captain Huggy Face. She would then take her sidekick and fly towards the person in danger. This was not like other times. She knew the voice of the person crying for help. It was her dad’s voice. The infamous Dr. Two Brains. Becky had her dad get frightened before, especially when cats were around. Her dad did not sound like he had an encounter with a cat. To the young girl, it sounded like her dad had an encounter with a much more frightening being. Bob spoke in his usual monkey chatter, asking the young girl what was wrong. Becky turned to her sidekick. “Dad’s in big trouble. He really needs our help Bob.” Becky exclaimed in an alarmed and urgent tone. Bob’s eyes widened in shock. He then gave the young girl a determined nod, telling her he was ready to help save her dad. Bob leaped onto her shoulder as Becky touched the center of her sweater, ready to transform. “Word Up!” She exclaimed as now Wordgirl and Captain Huggy Face headed off to where Dr. Two Brains was crying for help. Wordgirl landed at the grocery store and gasped at the sight before her. There was a lot more destruction around here than was normal for her dad when he was committing a crime. A mix of goop and cheese splatters decorated the walls and aisles of the grocery store. A few unfortunate citizens appeared to have been caught trapped by either the goop or cheese splatters. “Dr. Two Brains! Where are you?” Wordgirl called out, hoping her dad would answer. She soon heard two voices shouting near the back of the store. One, she recognized as her dad, the other was unfamiliar to her. “WOULD YOU QUIT SHOOTING AT ME! I’M A JESTER! NOT A CLOWN!” The unfamiliar voice shouted. “IT’S THE SAME THING AND NO!” Her dad shouted back. Wordgirl sped towards the shouting and saw a sight that confused her more than frightened her. On one side, Dr. Two Brains was hiding behind a row of shelves, clutching onto a cheese ray and a goop ray. He looked to be fighting for his life. On the other end was a man that neither Wordgirl nor Huggy had seen before. The figure was wearing a jester’s outfit that was similar to what a jester at a Renaissance festival would wear. The guy seemed to be as frightened as her dad was. He was also clearly trying to avoid getting shot at. ‘What the heck is going on here?’ Wordgirl thought to herself. She looked at her sidekick who simply gave a shrug. He was just confused as she was. Wordgirl cleared her throat to get their attention. “Excuse me. Can someone please explain to me what is going on here?” Wordgirl politely asked. Both men looked surprised and relieved to see Wordgirl had shown up, but for different reasons. “Oh thank goodness, a superhero. Please, you have to save me from this maniac!” The jester figure pleaded. “Excuse me! I am the one who needs help here!” Dr. Two Brains exclaimed in an angry and offended tone. He then turned to Wordgirl. “Wordgirl you got to get rid of this nightmarish clown. Take him to a jail far away from here.” The mad scientist pleaded. This time the jester figure looked offended. “I am a jester! Not a clown!” He shouted back.
"Same thing!" Two brains scoffed
"uhh... actually-" a passerby spoke up, it was the guy who usually couldn't find the police station. "there is a difference..."
"did he steal something....? Or ...?" The jester man shook his head. "No! I was simply standing here!" "Yeah standing there Menacingly!" Two brains says.
Wordgirl sighed. She understood his phobia of clowns the similar like. However she couldn't really do much since this was a public space. "Dr. Two brains..i can't just arrest a person for existing..."
"man...barely ten minutes here and I'm already being Obstrized!"
"are you trying say ostracized?" Wordgirl says. "Though that means to exclude (someone) from a society or group. Or in this case being in this store."
"ohhh...yes! Exactly that! I just want to shop! And this absolute fiend, is trying to cause a ruckus to get me kicked out!" He pointed accusingly at the mouse scientist.
